Hi

I am descended through Christopher's son John Mills who remained in UK after his father and siblings left the country for a better life in Canada. I do have quite a bit of information on them but would like to know more of course. If you would like to share information on the Mills family, please contact me via ruth.leckie@ntlworld.com.

How are you connected to the Mills family?

Regards.

Ruth

Hi Mike,

I have a huge "Churchyard" family tree from Suffolk England which has been updated from 2003.

Benjamin Churchyard was my ancestor, his 2 sons John & Isaac emigrated to Australia ( and others)..

Benjamin was the son of Charles Churchyard & Mary Turner a rather well documented family. If your Churchyard family are from Suffolk then you can bet they connect.

Which line does your wife fit into and I will check my files to see if they are in there.
You can email me direct at
jbjackson@optusnet.com.au

I can email you what I have and has been well and truly updated since the old post on ancestry..

Regards

Debbie.

Hi Pat

Yes we have checked the LDS site ... our Mills family emigrated to Canada in about 1833 and we have recently been in touch with descendants of siblings of our John (who was left behind in England). It was a total surprise to find that we have relatives in Canada! We've actually been to Suffolk and visited some of the places our ancestors lived - beautiful part of the country ... well worth a visit.

Regards.

Ruth

I did not ask either where you are located, however, did see that this family is posted on rootsweb.com by a Greg Harcharik.

Is he a relation to you? His database is dated 2000.

Other surnames are FISH, ELONGEWAY, LINCOLN and BRIGHT. And the last 2 seem to be in the U.S.

Maybe you already know all this, just just in case.

Pat
cw
Best in your research.

I did not think fast enough.
Have you checked the LDS Site, www.familysearch.org and do a search on their census records.

They also seem to have the 1881 Canada Census. If Christopher and family went to Canada around those dates.

Maybe you already did, But just thought I would ask.

Pat
cw
Note: I do not work for the DNA site. I just had my brother's checked last year. Only because I was just curious to see where we fell on the tree. It was not the tree or branches that I thought we were. Big SURPRISE.

Hi Rosemary

Sorry but we are not fortunate enough to be descended from John Mills the actor ... sure enough our Mills line is Suffolk-based but is mainly concentrated in Worlingworth and the surrounding villages - we don't have, to the best of our knowledge, anyone from Lavenham. Our direct line goes through a John Mills b. abt 1816 who was the eldest son of a chap called Christopher Mills who emigrated with his second wife and all of the children from his first marriage to Canada - with the exception of John who was left behind and made a life for himself as a shoemaker and publican in Rishangles and Debenham.

With kind regards.

Ruth
Is this family MILLS related in any way to John MILLS, the actor, whose biography said that he came from Lavenham, Suffolk, England?

Also of interest is the John MILLS family who came early with the Mayflower Group to America, and moved on to Braintree, Massachusetts.

MILLS family of this line are looking for contact with England family MILLS. Especially for DNA tests. Some have been done, and are found listed on the web site, www.familytreedna.com, under MILLS.
Search: Mills
click MILLS
click link
go to bottom of page
click: DNA results
see various MILLS DNA kits tested. Are any of these MILLS possibly linked to your MILLS of which you are in search?
thank you so much.

pat
cw

I am seeking information on Susan Churchyard b. 1787. Susan married Christopher Mills (b. 1791 in Worlingworth, Suffolk) and the couple had at least 3 children: John b. 1816, Mary b. 1818 and Caroline b. 1821. Christopher, according to son John's marriage certificate, was a gardener. It is thought that Christopher and Susan emigrated to Canada taking their two daughters with them but leaving John behind. It is also believed that Susan died in September 1830 and that her husband Christopher died in 1854 in Etobicoke Township, York County, Ontario.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who may have any information on Susan and her descendants.

Great thanks,
Have Ben m Charlotte = two children
Henry m Elizabeth ?
Charles m Eliza = three children
Isaac m Maria = six children Australia ( possibly married to Margaret Jones before being transported)
Edward married twice = six children
John Married three times = 6 children Australia
Thats all i have on the marriages and children, I have plenty of old and interesting letters from Edward Churchyard to his brother John. It seems they were left an estate from a Mrs Green and dividends were sent to them here. Edward had a son Edward from his first marriage to Mary Newton and he was writing to his brother John to try to find him it is said in the letters that he went missing.
There are a few other Churchyard families that Migrated here and some documents state they are related I cannot seem to place them. I am happy to exchange any information.
There are descendants of your Benjamin Churchyard in Australia he was Archibald b 1889 son of Frederick Thomas, Archibald married Sarah Jane Sneath = eleven children Australia.

Debbie

Hi Thanks for that, I did have most of it. I do not have many of the marriages and descendants. I have descendants of Benjamin beart, Edward, Isaac and John. Do you know of any of the others?
I do know Les Churchyard, I met him while I was on holidays in Queensland he is a very lovely man and his wife Norma they do not have any children.
Yes Susan Mawker was Edward's second wife he was married firstly to Mary Newton and had one son Edward who at some stage went missing in Australia. I have about fifty old letters he had written to his brother. He had two daughters Susan and Louisa and two sons Alfred and Ernest.
Isaac was transported to Australia aboard convict ship "Pyrenees" he was transported for larceny and married Maria Cousins twenty six years his junior, had six children only two of them surviving. John Churchyard married three times first wife unknown secondly to Mary Frances Dabbs had one daughter Mary Ann (My Line). Married thirdly to Elizabeth Newton (sister to Edwards Mary) and had four more children one which died at birth. Have loads of info on all the above and are happy to exchange any info. Where do you fit in.? and where are you from ?

hello again, thanks for the info on Archibald, I had been in contact with a Les Churchyard who was related to him but haven't heard from in a while.I had found him in the 1901 census.
as to all the rest here is what i have found so far.
WICKHAM MARKET parish records 1787 1814
birth 16 jun 1794 Ben Beart [base]
birth 18 mar 1797 Henry Beart [base]
bapt 9 may 1799 Jonathan
bapt 7 jun 1806 Edward
bapt 5 jul 1808 Isaac
bapt 17 jun 1811 Charles
bapt 24 oct 1813 mary
bapt25 apr 1814 john
this list seems to make a mistake with Mary who I also have as 1803
and Lydia in 1813 28 apr died15 nov 1824
and Elizabeth 14 may 1801
and James 1816
and my other main source is the 1881 census where you can find Charles 70 and Mary 66 in Ipswich
Henry 84 lodging with a sister in law? Eliza in Wickham market.
Edward 74 and Susan 50 with Louisa 20 daughter in Wickham market.with the age gap between Edward and Sarah i presume this is 2nd marriage and that he moved back here from Islington where Louisa was born.
so there are a few differences to be worked out.
hope this helps
