Here's the full article from the Roscommon Herald:

You are > Home > Film on Ballygar people's murders to feature on TG4

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Film on Ballygar people's murders to feature on TG4

THE MURDERS of five Ballygar people in Malahide, Co Dublin, at the beginning of the last century is to feature in a half-hour TV series entitled Ceart Coir.

The murders involved four members of the McDonnell family who owned and operated a large general store and shop in the town up to 1918 when the family retired and moved to Malahide in north County Dublin.

The McDonnell family consisted of two brothers Joseph and Peter along with their two sisters Alice and Annie, all of whom were elderly and all of whom were unmarried. On leaving Ballygar the McDonnells took with them Jim Clarke a local young man from Killeroran who worked with them at their small farm which was attached to there extensive Malahide mansion, known as La Mancha.

Both Jim Clarke and Mary McGowan, a young Dublin girl who was employed as a housekeeper were also murdered.

The trial and subsequent conviction of Henry McCabe is still regarded as on of the great murder trials in Irish legal history. Henry McCabe protested his innocence right to the end but was hanged on December 29th, 1928 for the murder of six people at Malahide which is still recalled as The Malahide Murders. There is still a plaque in St Mary’s Church, Ballygar to the memory of The McDonnell household.

The film, which goes out on TG4 on Thursday, January 25th at 10.30 p.m., will feature a reconstruction of the murder as well as footage taken in Ballygar and Malahide.

Ms. Murphy,

Matthew Clarke my great grandfather and a cousin of the Murphys of Scranton PA, left Ballygar around 1850 and founded the Clarke Store in Scranton which became Clarke Brothers (circa 1855-1927). The first, largest and last store on Lackawanna Ave. burned to ashes in Jan. 1927, being owned at that time by my Grandfather and namesake, George W. Clarke and his older brother Edward who both died within a day of each other in June, 1930. I visited the Clarke Store in Ballygar in 1993 owned by Mary Wall and no doubt James Clarke is probably related. I do have a large book written by father Ed Jenkins, my father's first cousin (his mother was my great aunt Mary Jane Clarke) which may have some info on your great Uncle. Are we related?

You can contact me at gwcusa@gmail.com. Are you American or Irish. I am not familiar with the murders of which you speak. Sorry I could not add more.

George W. Clarke (1950- )son of Philip Clarke of Scranton, PA and Martha Cary Clarke of Cortland New York

Robert Clarke was born in Canada West. He listed his ethnic background as German/Dutch. Also he and his wife sponsored the first born son of Charles Edward Clarke whose family moved to New York State in the mid 1800s. Robert and Charles were close in age and I've often wondered if they were related.
Although his wife Mary Ann Duffy's family emigrated from Ireland, I've never found any mention of the county.

Hello,

I know it has been awhile but I have some new information that may be of some help to both of us.

I found that my great grandmother Anna Maria Gaved-Horrell had a brother named John Horrell.

John Horrell married Mary Anne Riddle and they moved to New South Wales. I have just found a tie between their first child Anna Maria Horell and she says there was a William Gaved Horrell that she feels may be another brother.

Since there is an Australian tie, maybe we can find more.

Hi Shelley

I wish I could reply with lots of information I have managed to collect, but sadly I know so little about him, it's very frustrating!
I believe Michael came to England from Ireland between 1861 and 1865. I cannot find him on the 1861 UK census, but he marries in Wales in 1865, to Elizabeth Hughes. It took me ages to find Elizabeth as she gave her father's name as Thomas Hughes, but her mother was never married to him so Elizabeth was on the census as Elizabeth Cheney.
The family moved to Lancashire, but I have never been able to find any of Michael's siblings if he had any at all. All I have is his father's name from the wedding certificate.
Not a lot to go on at all, he only gives Galway as his place of birth, I don't know whether that is County Galway, or the city itself.
What a pity so few Irish records survived that fire, we may never know any more than we do know!
best wishes
Lynn
Hi Lynn,

I would love any information you could send me. Perhaps there is a connection. I know Clarke is a common name, but I'm not sure how large of a town/city Galway is, so perhaps there is a chance they are related, even brother and sister based on the birth years. Do you have any information on any of Michael's siblings?

Shelley Haley

Does anyone here have Adam Clarke (b. circa 1760, Ireland) in their family tree? He was a distinguished theologian, scholar, linguist and Wesleyan Methodist preacher, born in Londonderry "of humble parents" about 1760, settled in London in 1795, so often referred to as "English" although he was Irish by birth.
An ancestor of mine was said to have been "distantly connected" to Adam Clarke, and I would love to find out if this is so, and in what way.
Love to hear from anyone who knows anything about his relatives, ancestors, or descendants.

His brother was Patrick and his sisters were Bridget, Judith (Judy), Catherine and Mary.

Extensive family tree available for the family that remained in the Dundalk area - back 8 generations from the present-day youngest.

Please let me know if you can shine a light on John's life or descendants (believed to be in the USA).

Thank you.

Paul

Hello Rachel,
Nice to hear from you, it is so strange you are looking for a Thomas Clarke, whose father was William. I was a Clarke my father was an Arthur Wiliam, and his father was an Arthur Beaumont but my gg grandfather Thomas was born in 1851 not 1840 According to census's 1881/91/2001/2011 my Thomas was born in the area of Harrow/Pinner in Middlesex so were his children, they all appeared to be coachman/taxi drivers.
The william listed on Thmas and Harriot clarkes marriage cert; which l have was an agriculter worker (as was many of thousands of country people in those days).
What interests me is the link with the Beaumonts, l have founda few just a few living in the same area as my gg grandfather.
How did you find out Williams wifes name? as l cannot find my Thomas,s birth cert;(Willam was on his marriage cert;), as there was so any Clarkes in that area. According to my fathers info he gave me prior to his death, Thomas his grandfather was a Studman or horse man for some lord and lady in Eaton/Harrow. Thomas also had a son with the middle name of Roland which was also a surname in those days!!.
My email address is yentl@xtra.co.nz l live in NZ please contact me soon l am sure we have a link, l have not heard of the clarkes coming from futher north but many families traveled slowly towards London and l hav no idea where William came from.
Regds
Veronica

Thanks for responding - I was looking at one of the threads where someone was looking to find descendants of William Clark born 1805 in Scotland. He married Mary Anne Mavor on 13 January 1927 in Fordyce. I am looking for connections back to Scotland for Francis Mavor who emigrated from Scotland to Canada on the Castaglia in the 1800's.
Sandy

George Clarke was born 15 April 1833 in County Cavan, Ireland. (His parents were Elizabeth Lawrence and William Clarke) In 1843, with his parents and some number of siblings, emigrated to Canada, to the Cavan/Millbrook area. He was inspired by a travelling Methodist minister to study for the ministry himself, and in May 1852, aged 19, went to New York. In 1860 he became a US citizen, graduated from Wesleyan University (there is a handsome photo of him in the class album which I can email you if you like!), was ordained a Methodist Episcopal Minister, and married Miss Lydia A. Barber, a school-teacher from upstate New York.

They had nine children (three died in infancy); let me know if you want their details.

The family resided in various places as George was assigned to different ministries around the state. Rev. Clarke was especially active in the temperance movement, pursued higher studies, and travelled abroad as well. By the late 1890s they settled in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Lydia died March 25, 1908 and is buried in Mt. Kisco cemetery. George married again, Dr. Margaret Curry (the town physician). They divided their time between New Jersey and Florida until his death in January 1921.

Annie Clarke nee Norton.

Hello,
I'm looking for any information on my Great Grandaunt Annie Clarke, nee Norton. She was born in Turpane, Co. Roscommon, Ireland c 1875. Her sister Norah, who remained in Roscommon is my Great Grandmother.

Annie immigrated to NYC some time before 1898, possibly 1895.
In 1898 her sister Katie immigrated and according to the Ellis Island record stayed with 'Mrs Clarke' at 52E 32nd ? NY. I assume this is Annie and she is already married.

I don't have any name for her husband, or an area where they settled. My mother thinks she remembers hearing about family in New Jersey, but she isn't sure.

In the 1960's my mother was penpals with a Brain Clarke who was a grand son or Grt grandson of Annie's. He had a sister named Karen who married Pete McGovern on August 9th 1965.

We have a very battered picture of Annie with young boy. Written on the back it says that she was with Mary Louise's boy, and there is also a mention of Irene. We don't know two these people are.

Annie had a several sisters and a brother who also went to NYC. They were
Katie who married a Dunne
Ellen who returned to Roscommon c1914
John and Mary F who I have no information on.

She also had two sisters, Norah and Bridget, and a brother Thomas who remained in Ireland.

Any information on Annie Clarke and her family would be very gratefully received.

Emma

Rachel Anna Geraldine Clarke-Melancthon, Ontario

Thursday, August 13, 1931-Orangeville Banner

A coroner's inquest into the death of five-year-old Rachel Anna Geraldine Clarke, who was killed August 1st on Highway 10 in front of her parents' home in Melancthon has resulted in a verdict of accidental death. The jury found that the little girl came to her death by running out suddenly in front of a motor car driven by John B.Kerr of Toronto."We think that the driver might have slowed up more than he did when he saw children on both sides of the road. We also think that the guardians of the children should have taken more precaution, considering the heavy holiday traffic on the highway."
I am trying to trace a Thomas George Clarke who was a munitions worker at the Woolwich Arsenal in London at least during 1916-1918. He married Annie Rosina Hewett, date unknown. I was hoping to trace their marriage lines but have been unable to do so.
However, it seems that Thomas was already married to some one else, identity unknown.

Thomas and Annie had 2 daughters Annie Rosina May born May 5th 1917 and Ellen Elizabeth Julia born 1st June 1918. Both girls were born in the Camberwell area of London.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

I'm trying to find some info leading to my g-grandmother's parents. Her name was originally Ila Louise Clarke born in Pennsylvania in June 1910. Sometime in 1910 or 1911 in New York state her father, Kenneth Clarke, killed her mother, Pansy (maiden name unknown), and then killed himself. My g-grandmother also had a biological brother; however, I didn't hear what ever happened to him. She ended up being adopted by a family by the last name of Likely. I know that these Likelys ended up in Detroit, Michigan.

Also, my g-grandmother ended up marrying into a Ferguson lot, so her name changed to Ila Louise Ferguson. Both her and her adopted Likely parents ended up being buried in a cemetery around the Detroit area.

If this rings any bells and you have any info that will help me out, please don't hesitate to email me at riley@frozenonthespot.com

Stradone Balieborough and Shercock are all within a ten mile radius of each other, but I do not have much detail on my Clark Family to say who might be related. After marrying my Clerkin Anacestor, Ellen probably lived at a township called Darkley or more likely Shinan just outside the town of Shercock: both off the Balieborough Road

I wonder if Ellen Clarke, born 1902, that you mention might be my grandfather's sister? His parents were Francis and Roseanne from Lisastartim, Stradone, Cavan, Ireland.
Regards,
Kathy
