I am searching for any information on the family of Isabella Folger Claxton, married 1842, in Athens, Ohio, to Almond Hervey Burrell. She died in New Lexington, OH, in 1895, and reportedly was born in Baltimore, MD, in 1813. Her father, or perhaps a prior spouse, may have been Thomas W. Claxton of Maryland.

Would appreciate any assistance or info regarding the origins and ancestry of this woman.
Claxton Surname Project

Hi Cousins,

The DNA testing company that our family project is using is once again offering 6 holiday gift certificates for each surname project. This is a great time to join and be tested or to give testing as a holiday gift.

I can't talk about price on this list, but there are two certificates for a yline (paternal) 25 marker test, two for a 37 marker test and two for mtdna (maternal) testing.

These are not fully paid tests, but will reduce the cost of the test by 10-15%.

Terms of the certificates are:
1) that they be used only for new members (new kits), not upgrades,
2) that they are not valid in conjunction with any other promotion, and
3) that the kit must be ordered *and paid for* by 31 Dec 2007.
Any certificates not used by December 31st will expire, although if the kits are ordered and paid for by the, they don't expire.

You can use the certificate and purchase the kit, even if you haven't decided yet who will use it. The kits have a virtually indefinite shelf-life (until the samples are actually taken), so you could purchase a kit now and use it later.

If you are interested, please contact me offlist and I will send you the link and instructions.

Roberta Estes

While attempting to sort out my TAMAN family I have uncovered the marriage of ? Claxton to ? Taman in 1897 in Ontario Canada. The reason that I have used ? for the first names is that each time I have found this couple in later census (etc)..mainly Michigan, USA the spelling changes for the first names!
So I am posting 'as is'. in the hopes that others may have connections to these surnames...and we can go from there!

Tonight, I found their son's death in California in 1980 in California...(William C...born Michigan, 1902)
Hope someone else out there is looking for this line...!
Best from,
Judy in Canada.

Edward Claxton m. Susannah

Seeking Edward Claxton's birth family, and more ?? of his children?.

This is Edward b. circa 1828, and his household in 1881.

Edward CLAXTON M Male 53 Norwich, Norfolk, England Bricklayer
Susanah CLAXTON M Female 51 Norfolk, England None
Betsey CLAXTON U Female 15 Croydon, Surrey, England Upholsteress
Fredck. CLAXTON U Male 13 Croydon, Surrey, England Scholar
Thomas CLAXTON U Male 9 Sutton, Surrey, England Scholar
George HEWETT U Male 31 Norwich, Norfolk, England Bricklayers Lab

Edward and Susannah were married in 1845..yes, a teenage marriage.

Susannah's father and grandfather, and their father's before them were brick, block and stone masons.

Edward's family would most likely have been connected to building/construction trades or tailors/cordwainers/upholsters.

Edward's father-in-law would have apprenticed the lad if he didn't already have a trade. Via this census record, it looks like Edward is apprenticing his nephew by marriage.

George is Susannah's sister, Sophia's son. Edward and Susannah were witnesses to Sophia's marriage in Dec 1844.

Edward and Susannah's oldest child via 1881 is born 1866. As they were married in 1845, it is highly likely they have several more children, some possibly in their late 20's, early 30's by 1881.

Noting the birth places of the children listed in 1881, the family moved a lot. The *missing* children could be born between Norfolk and the London/Surrey area.

Susannah's birth family moved from Norwich in the 1840's to help rebuild the Houses of Parliament after the great fire in the 1830's.

Susannah and Edward probably tagged along as he would have been apprenticing to become a bricklayer.

If anyone connects or thinks they may connect to the above family, I'd be delighted to hear from you, and share Susannah's ancestry and family.

Regards
Roz
r_griston@dccnet.com

D. N. Clarkson in Hawkins Co., Tn. in 1856

I found where a D.N. Clarkson witnessed the affidavid of Amy Walker, the widow of Joshua Walker, a Rev. War vet., in 1856. I cannot find a DN Clarkson in eithe rhte 1850 or 1860 census. I did find a Nelson Clarkson, a lawyer, born in 1817, but from other ancestry entrys, it appears that he was William Nelson. His brother David, appears to have been born too late (1836) to witness something in 1856. William Nelson's parents were James Clarkson b 1787 in Va and Mary H. Campbell b abt 1794 in Va. Teh 1840 census shows him in Grainger Co., Ancestry lists his parents as David Claxton and Sarah Campbell from Augusta Co., Va.

August, 1773 (A). Samuel Woods vs. David Claxton and Sarah, his wife, formerly Sarah Campbell.--Debt. Writ dated 25th May, 1773. Account vs. Sarah dated 1770, August 16.

Does anyone know any more about this family? Where did David come from and who were his parents?

Roberta Estes

Samuel Clark/Clarkston of Clay, Harlan and Perry Co, Ky.

This was found in Bluegrass Roots, Summer 1998, page 61. This is not my line, but I hope this helps someone. There is more info that I am transcribing, but I am giving enough to identify the family. Gloria Kay Inman, who follows this list, is the submitter, so contact her for further info.

In the article, she says that she believes this family was a Clark but changed the name to Clarkson/Clarkston. The parents of the two brothers are not known due to the confusion, but it is known that the father was born in Tn and the mother in Va.

Samuel Clark/Clarkston/Clarkson b 1811-12 in Va died 1881-82 in Leslie Co., Ky married abt 1831 to Nancy Jane Reynolds who was born in 1815 in NC. They resided in Clay, Harlan and Perry Counties in Ky, and Leslie which was formed from Perry in 1878 where they both died.

John Clark/Clarkston/Clarkson b 1808 in Va married Sally "Sarah" McKinney about 1828-29 and the first 5 children were born in Va. The rest were born in Harlan Co., Ky where the parents resided the rest of their lives.

She stated that a manuscript was in preparation of their descendants.

Frankey Claxton in Illinois

I recently visited the Washington Co., Va. genealogy society. They have a wonderful indexing system. I extracted all things Claxton that they had. Here is one of the entries.

This is a query.

Searching for any relatives of John? Barnabas "Barney" Waggoner d Feb 1808 St. Clair Co., Ill, lived in SW Va, NW NC, Sullivan and Hawkins Co., but moved to St. Clair Co., Ill by April 1 1807. He lived in the Holston area 1781-1807, first on the headwaters of Beach creek and the waters of the Holston River and second on the waters of Reedy Creek, both sides, a north branch of the Holston river. Married Dorothea "Dolley" unknown. Children are listed buy the one of interest to us is Daniel b circa 1798 who married Frankey Claxton in Illinois.

Does anyone know where this Claxton family came from? Did they also come from the Holston area? Who were her parents?

This is not my line (that I know of), and I don't have any more info.

The submitter was Margaret C.
Johnson Claxton

Johnson Claxton married Emma Jane Shipley on 12 December 1841 in Boone Co, Missouri. It is possible that this was his second marriage. There was an earlier marriage of a Johnson Claxton to an Ann Garney (or Gurney) about 1829 in England. I'm not sure when Johnson left England or where Ann died. I'm also findiing it difficult to find Johnson in the census records although he may have only been in the US between cesus: arriving after the 1840 and moving on before the 1850 one.

There was at least one child born to Johnson and Ann: Frederick Moses born about 1833. Frederick Moses died in Victoria Australia in 1888 aged 55. Moses married Elizabeth Dalton in 1854 in Victoria, Australia and they had 2 children (at least): Frederick Johnson b. 1856, d. 1856 aged 10 months; and Frederick William b. 1860.

Has anyone any information about Johnson and any children he produced?

Lorraine

Claxton, Clarkson, Clarkston of Colonial Virginia

As the DNA project surname administrator, I am trying to find references to earlier Clarkson/Clarkston/Claxton families in the records. It seems to be that we are all stuck in the 1800s, early or late, and if we can find some folks working on these earlier lines, and perhaps DNA project participants, we will be able to connect ourselves together.

Therefore over the next few days/weeks, I am going to be posting things I find. I would ask anyone else who has early records in the Tennessee/Kentucky feeder states to please post them too.

John – 1647 – York Co. Va
John – 1680 – Barbados
David – 1699, 1702, 1704, 1717 – New Kent Co., Va. – associated with Butts family
His son John b 1710
His dau Frances d 1710
Peter’s wife Johanna died Feb 1711/12 – New Kent
David Jr’s dau christened – 1715 –New Kent
David marries Elizabeth Jackson 1715 – New Kent
William – 1716 – Lancaster Co.
Robert – 1719 – New Kent
Elizabeth died 1719 – New Kent
David died 1720- New Kent
Elizabeth died 1710 – 2 days after David – New Kent
Dick born to Susannah 1726 – New Kent
John – 1726 – New Kent
James – 1728 – New Kent

Note – Julius Clarkson seems to be related to this Butts family as the name Butts resurrects in the Julius Clarkson descendants.

Julius if found in Louisa and Albemarle Co. Va and then migrated to Bourbon Co Ky. We find he and other Clarksons, including another David, in Bourbon Co. before 1800.

This information was extracted from a much larger and more robust article at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~greenwolf/clarkson/....

Bobbi Estes

I have been researching the Claxtons of Ely and the surrounding area for some time and I have just been sent around 150 photos which were discovered in Canada in a box
marked Claxton Photos. Amongst these are two studio pictures taken around the turn of the century of what I believe may be George Henry CLAXTON Christened: 13 Jul 1873 Bridlington Quay, Yorkshire, England and what I assume to be his wife. The pictures are done by Boak and Sons, Bridlington Quay, Driffield and Molton. These pictures would have all been sent from Ely to relations in Canada.
I would be interested to hear from anyone researching this part of the Claxton clan. There are several other portrait type pictures in the collection from Liverpool, Spalding,
Deighton Yorkshire,Leamington and Preston although I can't be sure they are all Claxtons.

In 1800 Joshia witnessed a marriage in Grainger County between an Anne Claxton & a David Evans.

I'm wondering if this Anne was a sister to my Mary, and, if so, who their parents were?

My uncle was Alvie Jacob Claxton b. 1 Oct 1901 Hinsdale, DuPage Co, IL, d. 8 Aug 1975 Pinehurst, Moore Co, NC. He named one of his sons', Richard Allen Claxton b. 12 Aug 1931.
Since Uncle Alvie married my father's sister (Earlene Carrie Nees), I have not tried to look for his ancestors. I believe there is a cousin on his side who has worked on ancestors, but do not know who.

I have been searching for my Claxton line.

I had heard from someone a few years ago about them being from around the Colorado City, TX area. and being originally from Polanski, TN.

From what my dad has told me there is a Will Claxton who possibly lived in OValia, TX, and had a sister named Lilly or Lillian. She was my GGrandmother. (She married a Seals.)

There was a Charles and a Pew Claxton. There is an Ollie Claxton married to Jerome Tate and lived in Buffalo Gap, TX.

There is another W C Claxton b. 1851. with a son, James Huey Claxton. Others in Claxton line: Dulcy, Lonnie, Odell, Lerline, and LaVerne.

I would love to learn about my Claxton lineage.
Hope to hear back from someone soon.
Post info on Claxton Family Reunions! (Message from Board Administrator)

With the advent of pretty spring weather or pretty autumn weather, depending on which hemisphere you're located, lots of family reunions are bound to be taking place in the upcoming months. I'd encourage you to post info about
such functions related to the Claxton surname. One thing to remember, however, is that you may not refer to any costs or price of attending. Let us know where, when, and any activities that may be planned, and then give us an
e-mail address for more information, or if there is a website set up for the reunion, include the URL so we can find out more, plan to attend and meet up with long-lost cousins and share information!

Claxton Family of Claiborne Co, Tennessee

I am searching for the parents of James Claxton (Clarkson, Clarkston) of Claiborne County Tennessee, born about 1775, died in 1815 in Alabama during the war of 1812. He married Sarah Cook, daughter of Joel Cook in 1799 in Russell Co Va.

Who were his parents? Where did he come from? The Claiborne families swear the spelling was Claxton, but I've seen it also as Clarkson and Clarkston, but mostly as Claxton.

At one time, James was believed to be the son of George Middleton Clarkson, but that is now believed to be incorrect.

I know nothing more of Sarah than what is above.

James and Sarah's children were:
Fairwick who married Agnes Muncy
Mahala who married Andrew Hurst
Elizabeth who married John Plank
Susannah who married Levi Parks
Rebecca who married John Collingsworth
Martha who married Jacob J. Parks
Mary Polly who was born in 1795 and we know nothing about

Any help on this family is greatly appreciated.

Roberta Estes - bobbi48114@yahoo.com

I was in Dowell's Chapel Cemetery, Jackson Co., outside of Tuckerman, Arkansas this afternoon looking for my Bowden ancestors. Buried right behind them is a row of Claxton's with other Claxton's scattered around. I am a decendant of James & Temperence Claxton but this group doesn't ring a bell. These are the tombstones I found:
Claxton, F.M. d. 7 Oct 1918
Claxton, Ruth A. b.4 Feb. 1847 d. 13 Mar 1912
Claxton, Helen b. 23 June 1911 d. 20 Oct 1911
Claxton, J.T. b. 10 Sept 1872 d. 1 June 1956
Claxton, Jessie b. 26 Feb 1881 d. 18 Aug 1956
Claxton, Mark 8 b.Oct 1907 d. 4 Jan 1950
Claxton, Pearl b. 18 April 1909 d. 23 Nov. 1909
Claxton, Thomas Homer b. 19 Dec 1900 d. 29 Jul 1905
Who are they and are the related to the James and Temperance Claxton of Wright Co., MO line of Claxton's or another line?

Hubert Claxton originally from Anguila, lived in St. Kitts (Carribean)

Im interested in finding people with who have the same last name as mine-Claxton. I have only bumped into one Claxton in my life time and we found out that we were related through great grandparents. The claxton family has lived in all parts of the Carribean. My familly is from St. Kitts but my grandfather is originally from Anguila. His name was Hubert Claxton. He married Rose, my grandmother. She had 7 children, 3boys 4 girls. After my grandfather died in 1977 in Puerto Rico my branch of the Claxton family moved to the U.S. My brother and I, both Claxtons were born in Massachusetts and this is where most of my family lives now. One of my uncles moved back to St. Kitts. My cousin's family (the cousin I bumped into)lives in New York. In my family my brother and I are the last of the Claxton grandchildren because my most of grandmother's grandchildren are from her daughters and they now have different last names and their children have their father's names. If you are a relative of the Claxton or have the Claxton last name and have imformation please reply.

Elizabeth Claxton (KY) m. Fielding Lewis

Marilyn Shirley if you see this message please e-mail me.

If you haven't already found the information you desire, I think I can help you. I have been tracing a Elizabeth Claxton married to a Fielding Lewis who came from KY to IN. If I have the right one, I know where the cemetery and grave is. At the present time, I don't have my information at my fingertips, But if you e-mail me and desire what I have, I will share with you. I have traced some on this and visited the cemetery
here in Indiana. However, I do not know if I am related yet, but I do know a person who is living in Canada. I may put you in touch with him.

My greatgrandfather is Elias Benjamin Claxton born in Roanoke Co. VA. His father is Albert Claxton married Eliza E. Tinsley in Botetourt Co. VA, 5 Jan 1837. Albert born about 1817. I am looking for who his parents are? His wife's father was William Tinsley.

Albert and Eliza had four children: Elias Benjamin (my greatgrandfather) born 18 Dec 1837 in Roanoke Co. VA, Martha A. born about 1841 in VA, Mary Elizabeth born about 1843 VA. I have seen census these two girls could have been born in OH, but I have reason to believe that is in error. There is another daughter Eliza E. born 1849 in Miami Co., IN.

Would appreciate help from any one who has any more information and would share more of my information to anyone who is interested? Please e-mail me at
vclaxton@maplenet.net.

He also shows up on the pers prop tax rolls each year from 1795-1807 and again 1809, then disappears (sold out in the last court order). I don't know where he came FROM, or where he WENT. There is a William and Barbara about the same age range, that show up in Shelby Co, KY in 1810, but can not find any logical link between these two William and Barbaras. The later, migrated to Jennings Co, IN.

Does anyone have a list of children for this couple? I have it as being either June 26, 1880 or 1886 and that she is buried at Nails Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Bartow, GA.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks,
Polly

Mary Magdalene Claxton, b 1847 in Carthage, Tn. Married J.H. Claxton perhaps. Family records are vague but word-of-mouth tales have her married to a 2nd Claxton after her first husband died. She came to Gibson County Tn. with 9 children. d 1908. Who was she? Who were her parents? I'd like to know. An e-mail would be nice.
