Randy,
Thank you for your response! I don't believe Levi was a brother to Enos as I have been told that his Fathers name was Samuel but they very well could have been related. The moves from PA and OHIO to Illinois in the same time frame seem to be more than coincidence. I found a message posted at www.genforum.com/clay/messages/1397.html listing a John Clay and Mary Hoy that had a Levi listed as one of at least 16 children. Could this be your GGGGrandfather? I have seen other messages at genforum indicating that the family had been in Stark County, Ohio. Hope this helps!

Frank,
Perhaps I can help. My GGGGreat Grandfather was Levi Clay born July 12, 1825 in Stark County in Ohio. Perhaps they were brothers? From what I can gather from our small family pocket bible my family went on to Illinois also (To LaSalle and Will counties)from NY,PA and Ohio. Don't know why we skipped Indiana, but my youngest brother may be making up for this error by living there now. The family bible was given by Levi Clay to his son Cassius M. Clay in 1868 and again to Cassius's son in 1907 and so on until I got it from my father who is still alive. My father has (or had) a cousin living in Florida and I've asked him for information on his cousin as well as for the family cemetary where Levi rests. I haven't been able to go beyond Levi's birth and don't know wether or not he had siblings. Don't know how much I can help but there are alot of names in this bible with exact dates and spouses. Hope to hear from you after you get this note.

I think you are correct in John B Clay, Elizabth Turner are siblings. Have you found anything about them possibly having Indian in them. My Grandmother was John's Great Grandaughter and her and her siblings looked like they may have had Indian in them. Also I cannot find out anything about John's parents. They possibly could have been born in Sullivan, now Hawkins Tn????

My grandmother was a Clay who spent her whole life in Cobb County, GA. I always heard that there was a female Cherokee ancestor in our family, but don't know if it was on her side or my grandfather's.

I recently found a story about Thomas Hightower, on my grandmothers' maternal line (Spratlin/Spradlin -> Hightower). His first wife was killed by the British in 1780, and he subsequently married a Cherokee woman. However, it was his two sons from his first marriage who moved to GA.

Also, on my grandfather's side, I found a rumor of Cherokee heritage in the Cobb line, but no evidence.

Since this area was Cherokee territory and it was fairly common for men at that time to take Cherokee wives, I've found that a lot of families have similar rumors floating around.

My DNA testing turned up zero American Indian heritage.
I know your post of your CLAY family was in 2000. Here in 2012 I am researching, continuing this since the 1970's,to find my husbands ancestors. His line comes from the Marsh family,to the Isham Hodges who married Elizabeth"Betsy" Clay
b 18 May 1763 in VA. Parents were:William Mitchell Clay b ABT 1709 in Chesterfield, VA. As for the mother of Elizabeth,it may of been Martha Runyan instead of Martha Ann Lewis. Do you have this information? Mine comes from family records. Looking forward to hearing from you and putting me straight on this family. Will be more than glad to share what the family record says with you.
Hoping you still check this forum out after 12 yrs.
Thanking you in advance,
Maxine kansaslassie@gmail.com

My mom,Emma Lee Clay, lived and died in Watson,AR. I was about six months of age at her death in 1962. Her mother name was Josephene'Joses'Jamison-Clay, and her dad was Julius Clay.Julius Clay lived in Bogey Arkansas,up around the MO border, and Louisana,if not more places. He was born in Georgia. From my research I believe that he and/or his parents was mulatto. I also believe that Joses Clay was the daughter of Martha'mattie'Daniels-Jamison, which appeared to be indian or biracial from the photo;however, I was notified by a descendant of hers that she died at age three, which is not supported nor do I believe.I found to many coincidences to support my findings.

I am a great grandson of Samuel Clay who was
killed in action near Moro, Arkansas about
October 1862.

He was (according to word of mouth) a nephew
of Henry Clay of Kentucky. I am looking for
either confirmation or verification otherwise.

I know nothing of his (Samuel's) background
other than he was killed about two months
before my Grandfather (William Augustus Clay)
was born on Jan. 23, 1863 at Moro in Lee
County, Arkansas.

Any assistance I can get will be deeply
appreciated.

All the above information is posted on
myfamily.com which you may access by going to
www.myfamily.com and entering under the user
name of "jjdoe" and entering the password
"guest" (without the quotation marks).
Hi, Robert,
My mom has been working on the Clay genealogy for about the last 20 years. She has about 3 folders full of Clay info (from Sir Clay in Ireland to John Henry Clay, Speaker of the House). The problem we have is that my great great grandfather-every document he wrote contains different info - one says he was born in Arkansas, the other says Texas. The birth dates differ as well. One story says he was born in 1860 in Arkansas, neighbors of the Peaveler(?) family. The 2 brothers went off with the Confederate army and were never heard from again. The other story is that they went from Arkansas in 1860 to Texas. Around 1865 the parents were supposedly killed by Indians and the Peavelers in Texas (?) adopted Johnny Clay. Note-Johnny Clay's parents were, we think, James Clay, who married _____ Tubbs.

I uploaded everything I had and will try to more or less document details of the present. I pretty much gave up on finding past information but will be pleasantly surprised if something turns up. May I contact your cousin for more information?

Are you Sena's brother? I was sorry to hear about your father. I have been in touch with Sena and JC. I am the granddaughter of Jefferson (James) Monroe Clay. I am also looking for their father. My cousin on my grandmother's side (she was the wife of Jefferson Monroe Clay) has helped me with some information. You can find William Parks Clay, Sr. and Jefferson Monroe Clay in his tree along with some information on Joseph Isham Clay. A DNA test would tell us if this is this is their father.

It never told me what part. But in the 1880 census they lived in Mobile, AL. That is William (1830), wife Maria (1851). There were three other children besides Sallie, Mary Clay (1874), Eva M. (1876), and Evangilus the son (1873). I found out that William was a cotton weigher.
