James Claydon born ca 1806 in England, came to Saratoga County, New York about 1848 with first wife, Mary.
Claydon - British Home Children

My grandfather, Daniel Claydon, was transported in 1913 along with his brother James and a group of Catholic boys. They sailed aboard the Corsican from Liverpool, England to Quebec, Canada. Daniel and James had been in St. Edward's Home for Boys (Father Hudson's Homes) in Coleshill, England. Once in Canada, my grandfather was sent to a farm in Tecumseh, Essex, Ontario to work. James was sent to a farm in another town before joining up with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and serving in WWI.

My grandfather was born in 1903 in Derby, England. Once he got to Canada, he was reportedly mistreated by the farmer he was sent to, as so many other British Home Children were. He ran away and snuck into the United States using a forged birth certificate. He changed the spelling of the name to Clayton at that point.

I'm looking for any information about Daniel and James' family back in England. They may have been sent to the orphanage by their father after their mother died and he could not care for them himself. There may have been a third brother, possibly named Edward.

If anyone has any information that could tie these boys to a family back in England, please contact me. :)

Alternate spellings I've seen: Claydon, Clayden, Claydin, Clayton

Hi there,
Yes, since originally posting my Claydon entry on Ancestry.com (back in 2000) I have managed to get the Claydon/Calayton family lineage back to Shudy Camps & the 1500's ... However I'm afraid that at present I do not have access to my family tree files, as the FTM software I used to compile my data, causes major problems when installed on my latest pc & the pc kept crashing. So I've had to remove the FTM software from my pc. Though by the sound of things, we probably have the same information anyway. Thanks for going to the trouble of contacting me though, it's much appreciated. Regards, Helen Wilson

I am looking for Rosendale family members and when I found the 1901 census on a Rosendale I saw that the family were living in the Lock House in Burnt Mill, Netteswell. The head of family was George Clayden bn 1848 in Clavering and he was a widow, He had (daughter) Ellen Clayden bn1884 and (son) William Clayden bn1887 both in Bishop Stortford. Along with these were (step-daughters)Ada Rosendale bn1873 ,Ada Rosendale bn1898 both in Cheshunt herts, Elsie Rosendale bn1901 Netteswell, (grandsons) George Rosendale bn 1897 and James Rosendale bn 1894 both in Cheshunt and finally (son in law)William Rosendale bn 1871 in Cheshunt. Has anyone else got any information that could help me expand on my family please??
Regards Jo. c/o john.

Claydon, Clayden, Clayton
My grandfather, Daniel Clayton (1903-1949) and his brother James Claydon (1898-?) were transported aboard the SS Corsican in 1913 from Liverpool to Quebec, Canada as part of the child emigration scheme of the time. From Quebec, they were taken to Ottawa, Ontario, and Daniel was ultimately sent to a farm in Tecumseh, Essex, Ontario. They were sponsored for the voyage from England by the Catholic Emigration Society. I believe that they had been in the Father Hudson Home in Coleshill, Birmingham, England before being sent to Canada. In Canada, James signed up to serve during WWI in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force, and on his attestation paper, he listed his place of birth as Derby, England, and his full name as James Anthony Claydon. My grandfather was Daniel George Clayton. He seems to have used the Claydon spelling until about the time he married my grandmother, then started using Clayton, which is how my family spells it today. The story that has come down to me is that Daniel was not well-treated by the man whose farm he worked on in Tecumseh, and that he ran away at age 15 (which would have been about 1918) and made his way into the U.S. He married my grandmother in 1926 in Detroit and lived there until his death in 1949. Any information would be welcome regarding either Daniel or James. I haven't been able to track James down after his service in WWI.

Sorry about the late reply, I have only just found this website again and realised that i posted!

I have found lots of information about the Wycombe Claydons (as well as the Risborough Claydons).

We have Joseph b. 1914 High Wycombe son of James and Violet Keating.

James Claydon b. 1886, Baker Street, high Wycombe. He married Violet but some years later re-married but we are unsure as to whom as my grandfather did not have contact after this. But from gossip and tittle tattle around the village etc i beleive he died in Cryers Hill, High Wycombe where he had property.

Joseph Claydon, b. 1839, Askett, Monks Risborough. He married Eliza Grimsdell. They moved to Phillip Row, Oxford Rd High Wycombe Sometime after 1871 where he was a postman.

Abraham Claydon, married Martha Lamborne and resided in Monks Risborough beleived to have been born in 1788 and lived at 'White Cliff' in Askett (often referred to as Ascot for some reason) in Monks Risborogh.

I also have some research from my dead-end searches on the Claydons from Princes Risborougha and the line of John and mary Claydon of monks Risborough (i have yet to confirm that John is the Brother of my Abraham)

Anyhow, i hope this helps and if you have any information on my side whether it be on your line or no i would lolve to hear from you.

Many thanks and apologies for the year gap in reply!

kr

Amy

I am researching Claydon in Risborough also. I am unsure at this stage whether we have John and Mary on our side as i cannot find a tie to Abraham Claydon (m. Martha who has Joseph b. 1839, Ann b. 1828 and Elizabeth).

However, i do have some records that I have chanced upon while in the family research facility in Aylesbury:

Please note that I believe that there are two couples called John and Mary due to the time gap! All are in the Parish records reel number 47 at Aylesbury which pertains to Monks Risborough.

April 18th 1784 - Joseph also born to John and Mary Claydon of Monks Risborough

Aug 30 1784 - Elizabeth, dau of John and Mary Claydon born in Monks Risborough (possibly another couple or still birth???)

22nd October 1786 - William born to above

July 31st 1796 - Mary born to above

April 1st 1791 - Rebecca, dau of John and Mary Claydon, born in m.Risboro'

Also in 1787 a servant girl by the name of Grimsdell was noted as having a baby girl while residing at 'White Cliffs' where the above lived. (Only noted this as my Abrahams son Joseph married a Grimsdell......!)
------------------------------------------------------------------

22nd January 1815 - born to a John and Mary Claydon

14th June 1818 - Elizabeth dau. of above born

I dont know whether this info will help but one persons dead end is anothers doorway.

kr
Amy

Hi ,

I was browsing the message board and I saw your message in reply to mine .......... ( tho I had forgotten that I had put a message up ! ) so hence the VERY late reply ! I believe your Aunts father was a relative of my husband. Charles Henry Clayden born in 1889in Bishop Stortford , was the second eldest son of James Clayden and his wife Fanny. He was one of 7 children as at the 1901 English census. His youngest brother Ernest was killed during WW1 14th November 1916 aged 21 ( ironically MY son was born on that date in 1984 !) . Charles' father, James, was one of 11 children , born to William ( 1812 -1882 )and Susanna 1812-1896(?)
Charles uncle, Peter, is my husbands maternal great grandfather.

I Hope this is of use to you , I have the DOB of the other children but apart from Ernest no death dates I would love to have any more info you may have too.

Regards ,
Janis Pinder

I dont know if you have found any Claydons from the Wycombe Area yet, however i am related to one family.
James Claydon is my great Grandfather. He married Violet Keating who we know died of Spanish Flu (around 1918) leaving three Children Frances, James and Joseph.
However, there it lies as James Re-married.
We know little of this marriage as my grandfather never spoke to him after this until his death in around 1957

If this is of any use or you may have any further information on this side of my family please let me know.

There are more stories about the two other siblings - it is all quite tragic.

Many thanks

Amy Collard

SKS ALERT...Claydon of Niagara - Cayuga

Great grand-parents...

Need some SKS help here. I cannot link past, via the IGI or any other source, a Charlotte Claydon, d/o Henry and Mariah Claydon, of unknown English beginnings.

Was she alone at first, or were her parents here in Southern Ontario as well? And if so, where?

She and her husband, both new immigrants to Ontario, Canada, met and married. They lived in South Cayuga Twp, Lincoln Cnty, Dist. of Niagara, Province of Ontario, Canada.

Marriage record:
"Zimmerman, John, [age] 30, [of] S. Cayuga [Ont. Canada], [born] Germany, s/o Jacob and Elizabeth,
married 2 Dec. 1862,
Charlotte Clyden, [age] 20, [of] Wainfleet [Ont. Canada], [born] England, d/o Henry and Mariah [of England]"

Her husband, a German immigrant, was here alone.

Her marriage annoucement has her surname as "Clyden" but a person with a North American "ear" listening to an English accent, would have written that down if she were a Claydon, or a Clayton. Those of you with an English "ear" might be able to locate her beginnings by your own experiences with knowing where certain pronunciations of this surname may have eminated from. Her tombstone, gives her surname as CLAYDON ...therefore there is no discussion here as to her "proper surname," other than it may have "digressed" in pronunciation to the point of acceptability and thus "Clyden" was changed to "Claydon" for the purposes of keeping in line with what "people" always knew her as. She may have been originally Clyden and not Claydon. I just don't know ;)

She had children, on of which was John Claydon Thompson.
