Evelyn Clemence

In the 1911 census for Uxbridge, Ontario, 12-year old Evelyn Clemence,(born in England in May 1899), is listed as the adopted daughter of 61-year-old Benjamin Clemence and his 56-year-old wife, Elizabeth Julia (Lawlor) Clemence. Benjamin was born in Canada but his parents, John Wesley Clemence/Clements and Mary Slade, were married in Pelynt, Cornwall. We cannot find any other records for Evelyn and would appreciate suggestions. Thank you.

to Laura Truax - Henry Arnold Clemence was my grand father, He died in Laclede, Idaho in 1924, when bricks from a sawmill building fell on him. He lived many years after that, but was never able to work again. I was born in 1921 in Laclede, and heard the story more than once. So, it was not a train crash that killed him.
His father, Henry A.Clemence, married to Laura Bennett, was killed in an explosion on a barge on the Erie canal. I have the newspaper clipping reporting the accident. I think you and I have now met by e mail, so it is good to find your inquiry on the Web page.

My family is also related to Henry A and Laura. The grandfather, Thomas Clemence, from Truro, Cornwall County, England was part of the Nathanial, Henry, Edward, Frank, Maria, Sophia family. Jane Tempest, Aunt left a legacy and money to the children of Thomas Clemence. Thomas was the youngest of three brothers. The eldest was Sir Frank Clemence, Earl of England -
The first Clemence in this family came to America in 1790. Thomas and Catherine lived in Albany, N.Y. Their son, Henry A. was an Engineer working for George Pullman when the houses were being raised on the Erie Canal.
If you have any other information, please contact me at plseitz@mtaonline.net. thanks

Question for you - Fred and Beatrice Clemence are buried in Eastview Union Cemetery in Delmont, Pennsylvania. On their headstone, however, Fred is listed as "Frederick G." Do you have anything in writing which shows what his given name really is - Frederick or Fredrick? There is a family tree on Ancestry.com that includes Sydney marrying Mary Helman which shows his name as "Fredrick." Would love to share information with you!
Kathleen Clemence

I am the ggranddaughter of Francis E. Truax and Laura Bennett Clemens (not spelled Clemence in the family Bible). They lived in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and are buried there in the cemetary next to their farm. Were they married in New York? If so where? I can't find record of their marriage. I would like information anyone may have. I do know that Laura Bennett Clemens had only one son from her first marriage, Henry. We had believed he died in a train crash "out west" in the late 1870's or 80's.

Dear Joe,
How exciting to hear from you. Please e-mail me at mcdenhardt@yahoo.com. I guess your mother is Betty Jean? My grandmother, Ida, was a sister to your grandfather. My father is her son, Carl Burow. In fact after Sydney and Mary died, your grandparents took care in the young sisters. I know that Sydney's parents names were James and Charlotte from their marriage certificate. Mary's parents were Peter and Sarah Helman. Most of what I have come across has been from St. Aloysius church records. They have record of Peter and Sarah's marriage, Mary's baptism, Sydney and Mary's marriage, and the baptism of four of their children, James Jesse, Sara, Fredrick Gurvius, and ?(they couldn't read the first name) Joseph.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Your second cousin,
Carla Denhardt

Sydney Arthur Clemence

Dear Carla,
My grandfather was Fredrick Gurvius Clemence. Sydney's son.
Sydney deserted from the British Navy to stay in America. He paid a railroad worker to get him some "civilian clothes" and stayed behind when the ship left.
He took a correspondence course in engineering while working in the Pennsylvania coal mines and eventually became a mining engineer. Fred,(my grandfather)worked with his father in the mines when he was about twelve or thirteen operating a safety door. At that time (the early 1900's) child labor was a common thing in mines. I couldn't tell you exactly how man children they had because some died at birth or shortly there after but there were at least seven counting Pap!(that's what we called Fred). Both Sydney and Mary died at a fairly early age (in their forties) of tuberculosis. There's more I can tell you but it'll have to be when I can fit it in through e-mail!
Joe Izzo

P.S. do the names Carl and Ida mean anything to you?
