Hello Deon,
Thank you for your email. We both come from a separate branch of the Clement family tree. In short, our Clement family travelled originally from Paris to Germany, settled there for 200 year plus. My closest ancestor then moved on to Scandinavia, and this Clement immigrated to Canada.
Be well!
John Clement

The Progenitor of my Clement line in Louisiana was from Marseille, France. He married in Opelousas in 1810, His wife was born in Louisiana. Her father was from the German Coast and her mother was one of the German Catholics who came into LA from Maryland. The family lived in Opelousas, Grand Coteau, Lafayette and ended up in Rayne where Clobule was born.

Clobule is my grand father, if this fit's your family let me know.
Deon

I don't have any info for you, but if you will email Bill Clement at wpclement60@yahoo.com, he can fill you in on some of the family history of Clyde Caldwell Clement. This is his family line. I just talked to him on the phone to see if this was his family before I answered your message.

Sorry but I cannot find a "Raymond" in my many lines of Clement(s) but I would love to connect with a "native American" I am told that my GGmother Rosella Freeman Clement (md to Riley Clement Aug 6, 1881 was INDIAN and spoke very little English. My sources have no idea of which tribe, but living in AR, OK & TX, I doubt they were Mohawk.
Sue

I know, I felt the same way when I came across that reference. Here's the origin of the information. Jeanne is said to be Jeanne "Batet" but it's clearly the same family:

Gerard Marc BRAUD, Les Acadiens en France, Nantes et Paimboeuf 1775 -1785, p. 260, Family # 439:

Jean VINCENT, b. abt 1742 Paroisse St-Joseph, Acadie (Acadia). Son of
Antoine VINCENT & Madeleine LANDRY, married 25 Jun 1765 St-Servan, Fra.,
Jeanne BATET, b. abt 1742 St-Sevan, daughter of Jean-Baptiste BATET & Jeanne OFFROY.

Children:
Antoine, bt. 7 Oct 1766 St-Servan, Fra.
Jeanne-Charlotte, bt. 4 Nov 1768, St. Servan,
Alexis-Louis, bt. 9 Sept 1770, St. Servan
Perrine-Jeanne, bt. 2 Apr 1772, St-Servan; married (?) LEFORT
Francoise-Bernadine, b. abt 1774
Jean-Marie, bt. 13 Jan 1776 Chantenay, St-Martin Parish, Godparents: Olivier Theriot & Madeleine GAUTROT, d./bur: 8 Jan 1780 Chantenay
Jean-Pierre, bt. 14 Nov 1778 Chantenay, St-Martin, Godparents: Jean LEFEVRE, Capitaine & Jeanne MIEN; d/bur: 8 April 1780 Chantenay
Jean-Pierre, bt. 3 Sept 1784, Chantenay, St-Martin; Godparents: Antoine Vincent, brother & Jeanne Vincent, sister, d/bur: 7 Oct 1785 Chantenay, St-Martin.

Sadly, this leaves the origin of our Jean Pierre Clement unknown -- and even the question of whether he WAS a Vincent dit Clement, or just a Clement, unsettled. Nothing certain is known of his origins until he shows up in Louisiana.

cheers,

Gordon

Thanks for the reply. You would be a first cousin to my husband, Larry Joe Wood. His mother, Jewell, was the youngest of the children of Leonard and Elsie Clement. Larry was an only child. We are interested in pictures of Elsie. Jewell had only one picture and it was a not for sure identification. Jewell was a baby when Elsie died. Please contact me by email... eva1960@aol.com and we can exchange what information we have. I would love to build my husbands genealogy and I'm sure he'd like to correspond with you. Thanks Larry and Eva Wood

Leonard Clement was my great-father. He is buried in the Bear Thicket Cemetery in Laclede County, MO along with his first two wives. He and Elsie as you mentioned had Chester, Pearl, Oral, Roy, and Jewell. Elsie died. He and second wife(can't recall her name) had Joann. This 2nd wife died while giving birth to the next child. Later on Leonard married Ruby the third wife who outlived him by many years.

Chester (my grandfather) married Letha O'Dell and they had one son only (my Dad). I have two brothers one of which is Pastor at the Bear Thicket Church (formerly Methodist, now Free Will Baptist)that Leonard Clement was active in.

Pearl had two sons. Oral had a son and a daughter, Roy had 1 daughter, Jewell had one son. Joann, I believe had 4 children.

I would like to know who more about Leonard Clement's siblings, parents, grandparents etc.

Re: John Clement & Freelove Head

From what I have researched, I believe John DeGroff Clement's parents were James Clement & Jane DeGroff. This is all based on circumstantial evidence, mainly census records from 1850 & 1860, and the name of John's first born daughter. The 1850 Census has a James & Jane Clement, both age 73, living in Duanesburg, Schenectady, New York. In this same census, John DeGroff Clement is living with Freelove Head and his family. Other evidence is revealed in the name of his first daughter, Jane Clement. This Jane Clement could possibly be named after his mother, Jane DeGroff. Second, John Clement's middle name is DeGroff, which is likely his mother's maiden name, but this is just a guess. The 1860 Census shows only Jane Clement living with her daughter, Phebe Gilbert Clement and her husband, John C. Gilbert---no James Clement is listed. Also listed is a George Clement, age 20; not sure of his relationship to Jane DeGroff Clement, but possibly could be a grandchild. My connection to this family is through John DeGroff's son, Edward Clement(1850-1914). Has anyone else come up with any theories or any factual information concerning the Clement-DeGroff connection?

My Clement ancestors are from Luxembourg, but I do know that Clement was variously, and incorrectly, spelled: Klement, Clemmons, Clemont, Klayman, Clayman, Kleyman, etc. It depended how the person hearing the name-thought it should be spelled, in the case of illiteracy, or accent.
Good luck.

Clement family of Central PA

I'm trying to track down details on my paternal great-grandparents, Joseph (alt. Jozsef?) and Mary (alt. Marie, Maria) Clement from Central PA (Clearfield County). I've been able to track down census records that indicate they were Slovak, born in Austria (Joseph: approx 1866, Mary approx 1872), and I have approximate immigration dates (1898 and 1901 respectively).

My biggest problem is trying to determine how name changes played out...for example, I *think* I found Joseph's Ellis Island record - the details match almost perfectly, except it's transcribed as "Klement" in one database and "Kloment" in another.

Has anyone had any success in tracing these name changes? Or an even bigger shot in the dark, and branches out there that can fill in some of the details?

Thank you for your help.

Re: Jean-Baptiste Clement Dit Lariviere

Hi, just learning how to navigate the boards; so if I'm duplicating answers, sorry. Most of my early ancestors used Clement dit Lariviere (also La Riviere) in their names. They seemed to have stopped this practice post 1850s. I also have other surnames using "dit" as well. Initially I assumed (in my case) dit Lariviere meant the St. Lawrence River... but now I'm wondering if it is a carry over from France. I think it was used as a means to identify and find families -- mostly living in rural areas on farms. Although, because it was used by practically everyone (in my case) named Clement (as farmers tended to live near water), it defeated the purpose and just made for extra long names. One of my "dits" is Latroisgrandmaison - I presumed the family lived at some point amid a cluster of three big houses. Again, sorry if I'm repeating. Good luck.
John Clement.
