Hi Cara
I believe you are right about Wyatt C. being Benj. father. I am researching Benjamin's brother Joseph. I would like to find more on Wyatt. I have found that he married 2/15/1828 to Martha C. Clemons in Virginia. I also found that Martha filed for a pension in 1858. This is all I have found sofar. Hope it will help. Good luck and God bless.

I think your grandmother Elizabeth Wells is my aunt Daisy's mother. Daisy married my uncle, James E. O'Brien. They lived and died in Portsmouth, NH. Daisy had a brother Harold, as I recall. I see that your post on ancestry.com is 12 years old, but hopefully you are still available. I have some dates, etc.

I can't get a birth year on this George yet. Unless its the one in Montgomery Co, KY for 1810. He was single at that time age 26-44.

Re: Mattie Clemons

We now believe that Mattie Clemons was not born near modern-day Birmingham, as formerly believed. Rather, she must have been born near Lauderdale County, Alabama. We believe she is related to the fairly prominent Clemons/Clemmons family which is still in the area. For whatever reason, she has become hard to locate in any family trees, but I have some Clemmons descendants working with me on this.

I am inclined to think she got "written out of the family" thanks to two very ill-advised marriages in her life. I believe that she died, perhaps sad and lonely, somewhere in south-central Oklahoma, ca 1905.

We had always thought that she was part Native American. But I am now inclined to believe that she was full European, probably of Irish descent, and that her second husband, R H Winter, was a Cherokee.

Finally - I have a hunch that her daughter Ida Odom Buster knew more about our family than anybody - and that today Aunt Ida's descendants have this information. Will be eager to receive any help that anyone can provide - and if the original poster of this thread, the exceedingly mysterious Fay Fulton, would step forward, it would be great!!

I have a new lead, base on newly available records, that a Henry Clements was in Loudoun County, Virginia from 1786 - 1794. This is just north of Orange County, Virginia on the Maryland boarder.

I am too beginning to suspect a Quaker, Scot-Irish, or German religious background/origin.

My future posts will be under the Clements board.

Thanks Dan, that actually helps to know that there are multiple unrelated families in that area with the same name. I assumed, incorrectly, that because of the common switching between the same two spelling variations, and being in the same area, there must be a relation between these families.

Some assumptions I've made have panned out, but others have not. Thanks again for clearing that up.

Sincerely,
Jeo Agnello

Hi Joe:

I don't see a connection to our line of Clements, Clemmons, Clemons line. Our Henry Clements was born sometime after 1737 in Virginia. His son Thomas Clemmons, Sr, was born after 1786. Thomas moved to Harrison County, Kentucky along with his father Henry. We descend through his son William.

I don't see a conection but congratulate you on getting back five generations. One of the problems we have is the number of unrelated Clements living in Virginia at that time. Ron Clements is the most senior person to talk to about our line. Hopefully, you sent him an email as well.

With warm wishes,

Dan Clemons

I just recently got kind of deep into researching my Clemons/Clements family. The furthest back I can go though is to a GGGGG-Grandfather named Bernard (sometimes went by Barnett) Clemons, later changed to Clements. He was born around 1750/55, presumably in Virginia.

He served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolution (I have his complete pension file which aided quite a bit in my research), was married to Sally Goare in 1785 in Charlotte County, Virginia, and later moved to Franklin County, Kentucky for most of his life, but died shortly after moving to Indianapolis, Indiana in the mid 1830's.

He had seven children: Allen (married Mary/Polly Triplett) whom I descend from, Jane, Catherine/Kitty, William, Sarah/Sally (married Presley Arnold), Austin (may have been married to Nancy J. ?), Nancy (married to George P. Thornton).

I have to assume there is a connection with my Clemons and the ones you listed. I have a decent amount of evidence on this family, very solid evidence at that. Let me know if you think there's a connection.

Sincerely,
Joe Agnello
agnellolaw@yahoo.com

I too am very interested in knowing the names of Henry's parents and grandparents. I believe the family, Clements/Clemmons/Clemons were Quakers who fled England. Religious freedom most likely brought Henry's grandparents to America in the mid to late 1600’s. Based on their location in Orange, County Virginia, they likely walked the streets of Williamsburg with the signers of the Declaration of Independence. I know it is all speculation on my part but a long and rich heritage I never expected to find. I am more than willing to submit my DNA to see where that takes me.

Daniel J. Clemons, Clinton W. Clemons, Charles C. Clemons, John M. Clemons, William Clemons, Thomas Clemmons, Henry Clements
Hortense H. Clemons

Hortense H. Clemons passed away January 5, 2010.

She was born to the late Edward and Marie (Peoples) Fatio on October 28, 1920 in Brunswick, GA.

The Fatio family relocated to Toledo, Ohio in the mid 1920’s to seek better opportunities. Edward Fatio a Mason, worked as a bricklayer, carpenter, plasterer, mechanic, and eventually was the owner of a small grocery store, Baby Supermarket on Lawrence Avenue.

The family was an active part of Warren African Methodist, Episcopal (AME) Church in Toledo, Ohio, the oldest predominately black congregation in Northwest Ohio dedicated in 1871. Growing up in Warren AME Church helped Hortense become a continuous learner with a curious mind and her love of the Church was constant throughout the years.

She attended Gunckel Elementary, Robinson Junior High School and graduated from Scott High School in 1938. Always one to better herself, Hortense attended the University of Toledo where she majored in engineering.
Her formal education helped Hortense to develop the ability and imagination to create things; she took classes at the Toledo Museum of Art that gave her the skills to create sculptures. She developed a passion to design ladies hats, which eventually resulted in Hortense being one of the first black women featured in the Jet Magazine for designing and making ladies hats.
On August 28, 1943 she married Frank Charles Clemons, a star athlete at the University of Toledo who later became an officer in the army and awarded a bronze star for combat operations in the Philippine Islands during World War II. Hortense and Frank raised three children (Frank, Fatino, and Edward). During World War II she was employed by the Ford Motor Company as a welder, Rossford Ordnance Depot as a logistics supervisor, and a systems analyst for the Tank Automotive Material Readiness Command in Rock Island, Illinois and Warren Michigan.
Her diligent work effort demonstrated her commitment to her work and her family commuting 160 miles a day for a number of years. Hortense retired after 35 years of Federal Service.
Love of church, family, and community served as a source of strength for Hortense throughout the years.
She was a member of Warren AME Church for over 70 years where she served as a member of the Trustee Board, Minute Ladies, Lay Organization, Endowment Committee, Church School and member of the Funeral Food Staff.
In addition her community activities included volunteering for the Toledo Museum of Art where she ushered and served on the committee of culture diversity, Toledo Day Nursery, Toledo Symphony League, Toledo Opera Guild, the Northwest Ohio West Point Parent Club, and Top Ladies of Distinction. She always without fanfare remembered those who were passed over or less fortunate, by offering a helpful hand or encouraging word.
Hortense had a fond appreciation for fitness and nutrition, she loved to walk, exercise, dance, and travel especially to Europe and South America. This helped her to live a long and full life which was enjoyed by everyone she touched.
Hortense was preceded in death by husband Frank C. Clemons of 64 years, grandson, Marc A. Clemons, granddaughter Dominique Clemons, and great granddaughter Shante Fields.
She is survived by sons Frank C. Clemons III (Shirley), Edward F. Clemons (Denise); daughter Fatino M. Kincaide (Clyde) grandchildren, Frank Clemons IV (Angie) Charles Clemons (Edith) Tammy Fields (Melvin), Tianna Clemons Clyde Kincaide III, Nicole Clemons, Marcus Clemons, great grandchildren, Latrice Galloway, Alante Fields, Alyiah Clemons, Kayla Clemons, Frank C. Clemons V, great great grandchildren, Heaven Galloway, Jada Clemons, cousin Clarisse McCree, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
Visitation will be Friday, January 15th 2010 from 4-6p.m., wake service 6-8p.m. with Top Ladies of Distinction rites at 6:30p.m. Family hour will be Saturday, January 16th at 10a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11a.m. Rev. Otis J. Gordon Jr. Officiant.

All services will be conducted at Warren AME Church, 915 Collingwood Blvd. Toledo, Ohio.
The Entombment will follow the funeral service and will be conducted at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.

Memorial donations can be made to the Frank C. and Hortense Clemons Scholarship Fund, c/o University of Toledo Foundation. Make checks payable to the University of Toledo Foundation or go online to www.utfoundation.com all cards, flowers and memorials should be sent to Dale-Riggs Funeral Home 572 Nebraska Avenue, Toledo, OH 43604. www.dalefh.com

Hello:

All that seems to be known about my 5th-great-grandmother is that she was "Miss or Mrs. Clemons" and m. Benjamin HATHAWAY (1699 – 1752) ca 1719. It may have been in the Taunton, Massachusetts area or the Morristown, New Jersey area. Most (if not all) of their children were born in Morristown and she died (there?) sometime after the Nov 1743 birth of their last child and before Benjamin remarried Elizabeth (Mehurin/Mahurin) Crossman in Mar 1944.

ANY information on the CLEMONS family about that time in New England would be very much appreciated.
