James Cleveland 1763-1828

In several public trees I find James Cleveland (born 1763, England, died 1832, Blandford, Nova Scotia, Canada) listed as the child of Lord Cleveland and Sara Ann MacIntosh. It makes interesting reading to see the descent from King Charles II and his mistress Barbara Villers, who became the 1st Duchess of Cleveland. Does anyone have any documentation for this? - or for alternate parentage?

I am looking for an ancestor named Lora Cleveland, born around 1870 to 1880. She had 4 children, Edna, Charles, James, and Ike. She died before the 1910 Census. Her husband and children were in Oregon at that time, but I can find no records of them before that. The census lists the mother's birthplace as Indiana, the first two children born in Arkansas, and the second two in Texas. Any help would be greatly appreciated, my family has been looking for this couple for decades.
Charles name is Linzi, but may have been changed from Lindsey???

We have heard Alsace-Lorraine, but not sure of the actual town/city/village.

Also, have you heard there were 3 brothers who came to the US? Somewhere along the line I have heard there were 3 who came, one went to Alabama, one to Indiana (our line) and the 3rd to Canada.

Any information you have would be appreciated!
Thank you for the information. I was stuck going any further back than Charles George Schneher.
I am descended from Charles George Schneher.

His daughter Corine was my grandmother.
Spouse: John Joseph Smith, Sr.
Her son (2nd child), my father, was Charles Vincent Smith, Sr.

My father was raised in the Cleveland-Smith house at 551 Charles St. Mobile. (National Historical Register) He was named after Corine's father.

Charles George Schenher is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, just over a block away from the house. His grave is located, but not marked and my father is buried at his beloved grandfather's head.

My father was present when Charles George passed away (at the C-S House). He died of blood poisoning from a poorly performed tooth extraction. My dad said his last request was "Corine, I'm so cold. Could you put another blanket on my feet."

He was fluent in French and he took my father everywhere with him, particulary to the French market. His nickname was Mammy, because he used to tell Corine's children that "they didn't need a Mammy. He was their Mammy."

I have more stories if you like.

If you would like any information on my branch, I will be happy to provide it.

I see that my great grandfather was a pallbearer for Jos Schenher which leads me to believe that his wife/my greatgrandmother
Rose Cassagne was somehow related to the Schenher family. Possibly maybe just one of the French orpghans. Are you related to a Johnny Ostini? My maiden name is Inkel and I remember a Johnny Ostini being a friend of the Inkel family.

I am a direct descendent of Joseph Schenher and Mary Louise George through their daughter Louise Harriet. Below is some of the information I have from family and official sources, including the Cleveland family connection with the Schenhers.

JOSEPH SCHENHER was born in Alsace Lorraine, France in Jan 1830; he came to Mobile in 1853 and married Marie Louise George on April 23, 1850. They resided in Mobile County Alabama at the Loop for the rest of their lives. They owned a large tract of land west of Fulton Road at the Loop, and engaged in farming and dairy. Their 10 children were born and raised at the Loop. On his death certificate, his father’s name is given as Jos. Schenher and his father’s place of birth as France.

MARIE LOUISE GEORGE was born in France on Aug 13, 1843, and is said to have been one of a group of orphans who came to Alabama from France, and were cared for by Catholic nuns.

From an unreferenced newspaper
SCHENHER—Died Friday, March 15, 1912, at 1:25 o’clock a. m., JOSEPH SCHENHER, in his eighty-first year.
The friends of the family are invited to attend his funeral from his late residence, on Fulton road, three-mile post, TO-MORROW(Saturday) MORNING at half-past 9 o’clock, and from St. Peter’s Church at 10 o’clock. The funeral was largely attended, and many handsome floral tributes marked the newly-made grave, testifying the esteem of his many friends. The following served as pallbearers: Messrs. William H. Holcombe, Dominic Gimon, John Cieutat, Peter Antoine, John Condon, Thomas McDonald, Mr. Keagan and John Tachior.

From The Item, Mobile, AL
JOSEPH SCHENHER IS DEAD
ONE OF THE OLDEST FRENCH SETTLERS AND WELL KNOWN LEAVES LARGE FAMILY.
Joseph Schenher, aged eighty-one years, a native of Alsace-Lorraine, France, died here Friday morning at 1:25 o’clock at his home on Fulton road, three miles from the city, after an illness of a lingering nature. He came to Mobile in 1853, and was married, in 1859, to Mary Louise George, and had resided here continually since that time, engaging in the farming and dairy business and widely known all over the county. His wife died several years ago. Surviving him are eight children, twenty-four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and other relatives.
Hi, I live in Cape Town South Africa. Interested in finding out the origin of our unusual name 'Dyamond' (with a Y, as I always have to tell everyone). I'm part of the youngest, and probably one of the last, generations of Dyamonds. Anyone know more about how the surname came about? Was John Dyamond, m. Harriet Cleveland a convict in Aus? Any other interesting oral histories?
Amy

Re: Cleveland, Susan - Ky/Ind -married Curtis

As many times as I have searched these threads I am just now finding yours. I have yet to find either of them but lee Andrew Curtis and vardeman as well as 3 others are in new hope cemetery in mccracken county ky. Vardeman was my great grandfather, his daughter Carrie married John Calvin Powers and my grandfather being one of their children. His daughter Lillie married a Hayes, Lizzie and Pearl I am not sure of.
Dudley had several children. Those I know of are Henry Curtis, Sarah Elizabeth Curtis Young, Lyle Curtis Harte, Henry A Curtis, Delia Curtis, Vardeman Curtis, and Lee Andrew Curtis.
Based on the 7 year gap between birth dates I presume Henry and Sarah are by Amelia and everyone following them by Susan.
Dudley was a prisoner at camp chase during the civil war. I'm hoping contacting the historians responsible for archives can lead me to the next clue so I may figure out what happened to him from there. William Moore, father of Annie Moore - Vardeman's wife was also a prisoner there. I will post the links below
This one lists the Curtis that are at new hope church cemetery
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSiman...+
And this to the list of prisoners which Dudley was held with
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ky/state/counties/pendleton/mili...
Traciepowersgonzales@gmail.com
William Arthur Cleveland's parents were William J. Cleveland and Euphemia Dundas Young who married about 1834 in Smith Co., Tennessee.

The Cleveland family was on the 1850 census in Callaway Co., Missouri:

Census Year: 1850 State: Missouri County: Callaway Page No: 203A Reel no: M432-393 Division: 12th District
116/116
Wm J Cleveland 39 Schoolteacher 200 TN
Euphemia 38 TN
Henry A 14 TN school
Polly H 13 TN
Don Alonzo 11 TN school
Patsy C 9 TN
Susan J 8 MO
Wm A 6 MO
Theodore M 4 MO
[infant boy] 9/12 MO

I haven't found the family on the 1860 census, but starting in 1860 several siblings from this family, including William, married in Randolph Co., Arkansas.

William Cleveland, his brother Henry, sister Susan Cleveland Mahan and what looks like the widow of another brother were on the 1880 census in Kilgore, Clay Co., Arkansas.

I have a lot of information about the Young line if you are interested.

Janice
The CD is for sale on line, but I don't have the URL just now. Or if you have a library card and can get Heritage Quest, you can downloan them or just look up what you want.

Grace S.
Re: Siblings of Grover Cleveland

My grandmother, Lela (Brenton) Miller's mother's maiden name was Cleveland. My grandmother's twin sister's name was Lena Brenton.

My cousin, Keith Beatty claims that Grandma and Aunt Lena claimed to be relatives of Grover Cleveland. In fact, Aunt Lena moved from mid-Missouri to Cleveland Ohio where she taught elementary school, I believe, 2nd grade.

While trying to research Grover Cleveland, I discovered your post and was surprised to see that your grandmother's mane was Lena Cleveland. Has any of your research revealed that any of your Cleveland relatives married a Brenton?

Stuart Miller

Unfortunately I do not know anything about the Cassagne family. I have heard that 3 Schenher men from France came to the US in mid 1800's - one settled in Noble Co Indiana (our branch) - one in Alabama and one in Canada. We just returned from France trying to find connections. Found one side of the family, but no Schenhers ; - ( ... keep digging as I am sure you will find out from someone....good luck!

I live in Baldwin Co. Ala. Joseph Schenher and his wife listed my great-grandmother Rose/Rosa Cassagne as a niece on the 1880 census. Joseph was married to Louisa George.
I know he lived at least thru 1910 census with his daughter Alice Schenher. I am looking for any info on my great granmother and who were her parents. Francois Cassagne was married to Louisa George Schenher's sister, Mary Madeline George in Mobile on 11/5/1866. Unfortunately, my great grandmother was supposedly born 2/28/1861. Anybody know anything about Rosa Cassagne ?????
