I was happy to come across the discussion on Sara and Ben Clevenger of New Market, Alabama, as I am beginning to pull together my father's family history. Sara and Ben were my father's (Lambert Clevenger) grandparents. I'm still a little fuzzy on details and don't have much to offer myself, but my father might be able provide answers to specific questions. Would love to hear from other Clevengers. Does anyone know which country the Clevengers originated from, and when this particular branch came to the United States? Thanks!

I am working on my family tree and am looking for information about Bart Basil Clevenger son of Hamilton and Sarah. I know that he was born on December 9, 1892 and that he died in December 1978. His wife was Rosa May Elswick who was born in June 1892. Hamilton is a brother to my great great grandfather William Harrison Clevenger who married Mary "Polly" Stiltner. I have some information on Hamilton and Sarah's family but am looking for more information to fill in blanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I was looking through the family tree and I found where it says David B. was born in Ohio. Now I dont know if that will alert anyone to him or not. His parents were from Ohio. If I could locate some kind of census I would know. His parents were David H. Clevenger b. OH 1829 and his wife Mary Davis or Sayger b. OH 1832/6. I am still trying to track down David B.'s wife Eliza or Lide or Elizabeth. I believe she was born in 1876 I believe in Indiana.

John, Samuel and Aaron Clevenger - Ray County, Missouri

John Clevenger (b. 02 Jul 1798 to RICHARD CLEVENGER and SARAH WOOD) and,

Samuel Clevenger (b. abt 1819 to ELIAS CLEVENGER and NANCY WOOD) and

Aaron Clevenger (b. abt 1824 to ELIAS CLEVENGER and NANCY WOOD)

are, I believe, my 3rd great-granduncles. I also believe that it is these individuals who are referenced in the on-line book titled, "Martyrdom in Missouri", by William M. Leftwich, published by the Southwestern book & pub. co., circa 1870. Applicable text extracts for these individuals are shown below:

page 225
"John Cleavinger [sp] and John Welton entered as bondsmen for my appearance at the next Circuit Court, the first Monday in March following, where I again appeared [1866] in Ray County, Missouri]."

pages 325-326

"Simon E. Odell was summoned before the following grand jury [1866] and gave information, viz.: George W. Sargeant, foreman, George W. Foster, John Bogart, H. E. Owens, James T. Lamar, David Conner, Charles B. Bacon, Holland Vanderpool, Jeremiah Campbell, Wm. Vanbebber, James Hughes, Joseph Gossage, Daniel Cramer, Edwin Odell, Sam'l Clevinger, John Query, Daniel Parker and Isaiah Mansur."

page 326

"About the first of February, 1866, Aaron Cleavinger
gave information to Elisha Riggs, Esq., that Elder Isaac
Odell had preached without first having taken the oath
of loyalty. About the same time Aaron Cleavinger
gave information to Elisha Riggs, Esq., that Allan Sisk
had also violated the law by' performing the functions'
of a minister in like manner. Wherefore, the said
Elisha Riggs, Justice of the Peace, did authorize and
require one Charles Perkins to arrest the said Isaac
Odell and Allan Sisk, and bring them before him, the
said Elisha Riggs, J. P., which he did about the 11th or
12th of February; and because they refused to give bail
in the case, did actually send them to Richmond and put
them in the county jail."

Jim Houston
Fort Worth, Texas
I am looking for any information about my grandmother. She married Jesse Laney and was born Sept. 21, 1898. They resided in Indiana, PA. However that is all I know. My father told us as children that she was either American Indian or part. My mother tells me she would refuse to discuss her heritage with anyone. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I have an original postcard photograph of “Gladys (mother), Jack and Isabel Clevenger”, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in about 1915, and was mailed from Humphreys (Sullivan Co.) Missouri. Gladys looks about age 25, Jack about age 2 or 3, and Isabel as an infant. The card was addressed to and mailed to Mrs. Clara Wills Sims of Lucerne, MO, and bears a 1 cent postage stamp.

I found the family in the 102- census for Rocky Ford, Otero Co., CA. Father was James A., age 24, born MO; mother Gladys A., age 28, born MO. Son John C., age 6, born Kansas, and Martha I., age 5, born MO.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to this Clevenger family.

I found a photo of my father and two friends (I'm guessing by the pose of the picture) while in the Army in Germany. I'd love to connect with the friend's families. The names in the photo are (my best guess because my father's writting was difficult to decipher) Joe Hacker, Centralia Illinois and Marvin Clevenger, Muncie Indiana.

The photo was taken at Casa Carioca, "the most unique night club in the command", Garmisch Recreation area. The back of the photo holder says, "Photo-studio, Meinen; Concessionaire; Garmisch Recreation Area."

If anyone knows of the families of these men, I'd love to send them a copy of the photo.

Michelle
itsmylife (at) taconic (dot) net

ISO Mary Cherry Clevenger or Clevinger

Does anyone know the first name of Mr. Clevinger/Clevenger who married Mary Cherry. Mary was born about 1812 in Middle Tenn. I think she married Mr. Clevinger in Illinois. She later married a Mr. Tosh. I am told the Cherry family is of Girard, Ills. I was directed to a 1850 census entry showing William Tosh, Mary Tosh with some Clevenger and Tosh children. My ancestor Joshua is not listed with them but he is supposed to be Mary Cherry Clevinger Tosh's son.

Alicia

John Clevenger from PA

We are looking for any info on John P Clevenger from Fulton Co. PA. His parents (we think) were Peter and Mary (Polly) Divel Clevenger. He served in the Civil War, first from PA and then in MD with cousins Harrison and Franklin. The cousins went back to PA after the war but John did not. This would have been in 1865. It was thought that John had died in the war but he apparently stayed in MD. In 1888 he married Sarah Katherine Mansfield and had six children - Queen Anne's County MD. Where was he all those years in between?? Did he marry and was widowed, have other kids or just work somewhere in MD for all of that time. Pls advise if you have any info on John P Clevenger born Fulton Co )Bedford) around 1845-46. Thanks

John Clevenger of NJ - Civil War POW

According to my family, my great-grandmother on my father's side, Margaret Clevenger, had a brother, John, who was wounded, captured, and held by the Confederates in a prison of war camp. He then escaped and my great-grandmother went to visit him in a hospital in Philadelphia.

If anyone has any further information on John Clevenger, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. John and Margaret Clevenger were from central New Jersey, and their parents were John R. and Sarah (Sargis) Clevenger. John R.'s parents were William and Peggy (The Witch of the Pine Barrens) Clevenger.

Alfred G. Clevenger WWII Army Airborne

Hi. I am looking for him or his family. (He would have been born probably between 1905 and 1926) I see there is an Alfred G. in Texas, if he is in your line please contact me. tpaynter@centurytel.net

He was in the Army Airborne during WW2. He was in the 17th Airborne Division/139th Engineer Battalion at one time in his military career and possibly transferred to the 101st or the 82nd Airborne when the 17th was disbanded in 1945. He would have been in the Engineer Battalion, HQ & S or medical.

I am in the process of writing a book about the Battalion and would like to have him contact me. If he is no longer with us, I'd like the family to touch base with me to give me a summary of his life since the service. This also will be in the book.

I have also succeeded in getting these WW2 Heros to touch base again with their comrades after not seeing each other for almost 60 years. Their reunions have been wonderful.

This project is so important because 17 million personnel files were destroyed in the 1973 file in St. Louis MO. I want to make sure that these men will never be forgotten and will be put in the history books for generations to come!

Thank you for all leads to help me on this tribute to our WW2 Heros.

Sincerely,
Tammy Paynter
