Diane, I feel rather silly. I spent a lot of time scouring the registers for this "Cliff" family only to discover that the surname is definitely "Oliff" (or Olive in modern terms). In almost every instance what I took as a C was a fully closed loop (or "O"), often with a strike through. In any event, since these might be of interest to you I recorded what I found. FYI, I searched baptisms from 1559 to 1640 and marriages from 1571 to 1618. Note that many of the register entries were in latin (which I do not know) and the writing was often very difficult, so take this with a grain of salt. The following entries may be related to this family:

21 Jan 1578 Willm Ollife married Jone Luckyn
2 Jan 1581/2 Agnes dtr of Wm ?Lambat baptized
27 Jan 1587/8 Wm son of Wm Lambert baptized
24 Nov 1589 Ellen Oliffe baptized
10 Aug 1596 ?Rednes Olyffe als Lambard son of Wm baptized
12 Aug 1605 Thomas Seman and Agness Oliff als Lambert married
11 Jul 1611 Tomas Oliff als Lambard and Johanna Barker married
23 Aug 1613 Wm Olyff als Lambard son of Wm and Johan baptized
26 Jan 1614 Robert Kettell and Helen Oliff als Lambart married
Sep 1615 Christian Lambert als Olyff dtr of Thomas and Johan baptized
31 May 1620 ____ of Thomas Olyff als Lambert, sailor and Jone baptized
30 Nov 1617 William Oliff als Lambard and Priscilla ?Shennyng married
Aug 1620 Wm Olyffe son of Wm Olyff als ?Lambard saylor and Priscilla baptized
Aug 1621 James Olyff als Lambert(?d) son of Thomas Olyff, mariner and Joane baptized
Aug 1625 Grace Olliff als Lambart dtr of Tho ?Olyfft als Lambert, mariner and Joane baptized
7 Sep 1628 Grace Olliff als Lambert dtr of Thomas Olliff als Lambert, mariner and Joane baptized
7 Sep 1632 Anne Ollyff als Lambert dtr of Wm Ollyff als Lambert, mariner and Anne baptized
29 Jan 1636/7 Johanes of William Oliff als Lambert and Judith baptized

Hope this is of interest to you.
Thank you for those early marriages in Harwich. I was not aware that there was a Cliff family there. I took a look at the register and am pretty sure that names are rendered as Cliff als. Lambard (ie. cliff alias Lambard). I believe that it was not uncommon at the time to record an additional surname. It would often happen if someone inherited or was vested in property through another family name -often the maternal side. In as much as the father also carried the alias the tie is at least one generation up from these marriages.

Please let me know if you come across any other early Cliff's.

Regards, Bill

Cliff Family marriages in Harwich, Essex

Thomas Cliff of Lambard, single, and Johanna Barker, single were married in St. Nicholas church, Harwich, Essex on July 8, 1611. Thomas had a brother named William of Lambard, who married Nov 1617, Harwich and a sister Helen of Lambard, married 1615/16. They were the children of William Cliff.

I could not find a town or village by the name of Lambard anywhere in England! Perhaps the name was chaged to something else or was such a small community it disappeared?
Barker is the line I am tracing, but curious about Lambard!

I am a Cliff from the John Cliff line. John was a Sgt in the 'Kings American Dragoons' A cavalry unit in the American revolution. He was born about 1752 and the munster rolls(enlistments) from the war say he was a native of England. John had a brother named William Cliff, who I have found no information about. William was also a Sgt of a different unit of the Dragoons who were disbanded in 1783, as was John's unit.
I am seeking info on John and William

My ggmother was a Henrietta Allen nee Cliff. I found her in the 1881 and earlier censuses. She married a George Allen and lived in Kingston, Surrey. She had a brother, Richard Cliff, dob 1848, that lived with her and her family. She was born in Lancaster, Manchester in the 1830's. Perhaps this could be of some help to you. I think I have her parents' names somewhere. I think her mother was also a Henrietta.
Please let me know if this fits in with your research.
Thanks, Gail

My Cliff's came to the US in 1846 and supposedly went to Michigan first. Then Thomas Cliff and Sarah Audlin ended up in Oswego, NY in 1847. I have always wondered why did they go to Michigan first. Their oldest son stayed in that area or was there originally. Thomas Audlin Cliff was there oldest son. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you

Kevin Roy
Oneida, NY

I am looking for relatives of John Stewart Cliff. He was a sailor during WWII and listed his hometown as Wichita. He was aboard the sub, the USS GRUNION when she went missing in July 1942 while on its maiden voyage in the Aluetians. The families were not notified for about 2 months.

They were declared dead Aug 2, 1943. 70 Men died on this submarine and until recently nothing was known concerning their fate.

Now a search in underway, being conducted by the son's of Commander Mannert. I joined this search to find relatives of the dead sailors so we could share this exciting news. Any tips of leads will be greatly appreciated......

Sharon,

I have Cliff's in my family tree and they lived in the "Thumb" area of Michigan (Cass City) - about an hour away. My grandmother was Irma Cliff and she had four other sisters. My Great Grandfather was Richard Cliff. I have not spent any time on the Cliff genealogy tree, but I do have an obituary for him. I can get information off of that to you. But, I do believe that, along with some pictures my grandmother left me, is all of the Cliff information I have. But, could be a start for you, especially with the Michigan connection you are looking for.

Rob
