Hi - My grandmother's sister Laura Warren married David Cliffe, both were born in England and settled in Canada. He was born 1880 and she was born 1879. They had a daughter Alice born June 1907 in Ontario. I have further information if you think we have a connection here.

Hi,

I don't know if there is a relationship, I was just looking up my dad's family, and Cliffe isn't a very common name. His name is Francis Howard Cliffe. His dad's name was Francis Cameron Cliffe. I just thought maybe there was some correlation there with the Francis and Frances. Do any of those names sound familiar. They were from Wisconsin.

My grand father's brother was George Cliffe b 1864,
he married Selina Harding b 1866 of Mow Cop Staffordshire. their children were George b 1891. Lily b 1893. Martha b 1895.

I have an Ellen born in Mold,Flint, Wales. Her name is on a list with no birth date for her, but the male who appears to be the older brother was born in 1812.

I have just started to do a family tree on my husbands side, what we know is that my husband is Called Lee Van Cliff, his father was called Derek Cliff, his father was a Benjamin Cliff who's wife was called Fan -Fransis Cliff we think alot of these were in Blackburn. May be Yorkshire also if anyone has any Cliffs that I may be interested in I would be truly grateful

I was checking out my 'Power' family and came across an entry about Anthony John Cliffe, who bought 'Bellgrave House' in Wexford. He married Lady Francis Power, in 1904 (widow of Sir John Power)
Anthony died Dec. 21, 1921 and his widow left for London.
Francis Emma Power's maiden name was 'Segrave' (daughter of Capt. Henry Segrave of Kiltymon, Co. Wicklow. She married John Power in 1876. He was the son of Sir James Talbot Power of the Power distillery of Dublin and the mother was of the Talbot's of Malhide Castle (John Hyacinth Talbot)
Would this be one and the same 'Anthony and Francis' you speak of here?

Thank you very much for the GREAT information. I really appreciate it - I feel that this may Anthony's grandfather - as his father had the same name ie Anthony Loftus. The name Loftus seems maybe to have been carried through the generations. Will do some more "investigating".

Glad that I could be of assistance. If you do find anything more of Captain Loftus Cliffe's career in the British Army or elsewhere please let me know. I suspect that he was one of many British officers that left England to serve in the regiments of the East India Company. The British Army underwent a very severe downsizing after the end of the American Revolution and many officers were forced to seek employment elsewhere. Happily for many of them this coincided with a demand for European officers in the East India Company.
