His father Edward Clingan is buried in Rhea County, Tenn. I think T.J. had a brother Edward. I'll have to check the book.
Hello Ian,
Thank you very much for your message...very exciting! My sister has been doing a lot of work on a family tree so it would be thrilling to see the tree. Did any of your family attend a Clingan get together in Gloucestershire a long time ago now...mid/late 70's?..when a whole gang of Clingans met up in Stroud? I was only about 15 and remember going with my sisters. Auntie Josie sadly died a few years ago but Aunty Mary is still alive (her sister). I do remember Auntie Josie talking about you which was how i latched on to your post. Thank you very much for any details. It's very exciting!
Regards,
Trudy

Dear Joy,
I read your message today that you sent to Ian Clingan in 2006. I read with much interest as we have a common relative. My husband, Donald William Stockton's great grandfather, was William Clingan married to Ruth Langdon. William arrived when he was two years old on board the "Forest Monarch" from Glasgow Scotland in 1853 to Victoria, arriving in 1854. William Clingan and Elizabeth Cowden had seven children. AFter Elizabeth's death, William married Esther Dick and they had six children.
William and Elizabeth's son, William Clingan married Ruth Langdon on 20 July 1880 at the Botany Street Congregational Church Waterloo Sydney. I have their marriage certificate. I also have the death certificate of William, who died on 18 June 1907.
William and Ruth had seven children, 5 boys and two girls. The eldest daughter, Ethel Ruth, was my husband's grandmother. Alexander Stanley Clingan, was the youngest child. Alexander died at the age of 22 years, when he was killed on 19 July 1916 at the Battle of Fromelles, France. Six of our family members went to France this year and on 19 July this year, exactly 94 years to the day, of the Battle of Fromelles, a wonderful Commemorative Ceremony was held at the new Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery at Pheasant Wood, Fromelles. It was such a privilege to be there. Alexander was among the 96 soldiers whose DNA of his remains has been a perfect match with two of our family members. It was wonderful to be at his graveside and know that he was no longer lost, but now found. What a relief and blessing that would have been for his mother, Ruth, who was said to have gone down to the wharf at Sydney Harbour every time a war ship came in, hoping to see her son again.
Well, that's a very little of a tremendous amount of family history our family have gathered over the years.
In my husband, Don Stockton's line, is his mother,Thelma Ethel Ruth (McDonald) Stockton. She married Henry William Stockton. Thelma was the daughter of Ethel Mary (Clingan) McDonald and Hubert Arthur McDonald. Ethel was the daughter of William and Ruth Clingan, William being the son of William Clingan and Elizabeth Cowden.
I would be grateful if you could contact me after reading this and confirm our family tie.
How is Ian Clingan related to the family?
Thank you Joy. Gwenda Stockton.
Edward Clingan from Tennessee to Arkansas

I was hoping someone could shed some light on a mystery I have. In Clark County, Arkansas in 1850 there are 2 Edward Clingan's. What makes it confusing is they actually put "JR" and "SR" by their names on some census years. The 2 Edwards are very close in age although Edward "JR" changes his birth year on every census they are not more than 3 or 4 years apart in age. I know that I have see some people talk about Edward Clingan that was the son of George Washington Clingan and Jannet Kincade. There is the Edward Clingan that lists hiself as "SR" that has Jannet living with him in 1850 at the age of 72 but a few households over there is another Edward Clingan "JR" who has a wife Nancy and his children. This "JR" Edward Clingan is my ancestor. My question is does anyone know how the other Edward Clingan ties into the Clingan line. He seems to fly under the radar I have seen a lot of people on ancestry that have trees that have these 2 Edwards combined as 1 person. I have traced them back and "SR" is in Bradford County, TN in 1840 with Jannet, it has her as "Jane" living next door to him. Edward "JR" is living in Rhea County, Tennesee in 1840.

There is a tombstone in Clark County, Arkansas that has Edward Clingan 1808-1881 I have not found a tombstone for the other but there is a small obituary in the local paper in May of 1896 that says "Ed Clingan known as 'Big Ed' has died at the age of 90" I'm not even sure if anyone can say positively which one died when.

Anyone have any incite into the 2 Edward Clingan's? I have traced both of them after 1840 and know where their children went. I just have not found my Edward Clingan talked about anywhere. I know he has to be related to the other Edward I just don't know if they are cousins or what.

Well, my dear cousin, it has been several years since you confirmed my thinkin of children of David Clingan as being Morcane and Henry. I was only mildly interested at that time as I was only putting together a genealogical family outline. Since then, however I have become a member of "The Clingan Connection" which is our family web page. Now I have some family members actively seeking information on all these men. Would you be so kind as to send me all the information you have on these men as well as all the material you have on the entire Clingan family. If you haven't looked at our web page, you can find it on most search engines and it is free if you would care to joinus. I would encourage you to do so, because there is a good deal of good reliable material to be found there. If you will respond, my email address is: wlc32@woh.rr.com I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Wally Clingan

Hello, My name is Wally Clingan. I have been working on the history of the Clingan family for over 10 years now. We do not know a reat deal about our family before they came to the states, but I think we are gaining on it. The forst Clingan we know about whi came here from Ireland settled in The Lancaster- York Co PA area. In my Word studies I call them the Pennsylvania Clingan, even though they are scattered across the US now. Like you, I thought my family was the only one around, but I find they are thicker than fleas now. In fact I am presently working on 6 different line in the US. If you would be interested, I will send all of my Word studiess to you, all you need do is write and ask for them and send me your email address. MY address is wlc32@woh.rr.com I'll look forward to hearing from you, Wally

Hello, My name is Wally Clingan. My great uncle was Thomas Clingan son of Jesse, son of James, son of John. My Aunt Viols remembers Thomas as an old man whom her parents warned he to stay out of his way. He had wwhite hair and a big white mustache which he was constantly combing with a fine toothed comb. He lived with my great grandfather, William Warren Clingan during his waning years in Tipp City Ohio. He was married to one Nancy Johnson, who was the daughter of one of his great aunts. They had,I believe 7 or 8 children.

If you would be interested in having it, I have a Word study on my family that goes back to my ggggreat grandfather John Clingan which I will be glad to send to you.
Oscar Jerome was my grandfather. He was born in mississippi and buried in Alabama. I don't have any information on Andrew. I am researching my Native American roots. Many of the Clingans in Mississippi were Indian. I have some census roles. I have an Andrew J. listed in the Tishomingo co. census june, 1880, wife Mary, son George, daughter Willie. They appear on the same census role as my great-grandfather william J., so perhaps they are related. My grandfather was at least half Cherokee ( his mother), and I think his father William J. was either mixed or full-blood. I will try to check messages a little more often. Thanks for replying, Connie

They then moved further out to Prescot where she died Apr/Jun 1952.
Do not know area but from map there appears to be only Prescot parish church.
Isabella Clingan Linden

Recently found information on my grandmother's (Ruth Clingan Robertson 1896-1979) cousin, Isabella Clingan. She was from Belleisle, Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh, IRL, her mother was Elizabeth Ellis and I don't know her father's name. She was born 23 Jan 1897 in County Fermanagh and immigrated to Monticello, Indiana 28 Feb 1921 to take care of my Aunt Jennie (Jane) Clingan McQuaid. After Aunt Jennie died in 1924, Isabella went home and then returned to the US on 12 Sept 1925 and moved to San Diego, California. She is in the 1930 census. I found her in the Social Security database and she died 21 May 1983 in San Mateo, California with the married name of Linden. Anyone have any clues to the this Fermanagh group of Clingans? I would appreciate any help as I have run into endless dead ends in tracking my grandmother's family over the past 30 years.

Are you the allegra Shea daughter of Elizabeth Shea Hudspeth? If so, email me. I am an old friend from PA that your mom and grandma brought you and Dentin to see me the summer before she died. How are you?

Jody,
Just looked at your message board to get e-mail address and from it, appears you are from that superior country above usa.
If so you might be interested to know that the Clingans in Wembley area are from my line with some of them drifting down to nearer the border - Cowgary? Sorry about spelling.
Also aware of other Clingans in Canada long before my lot.
Also see from you listing you are interested in Haining surname. Take a look at Kirkcudbright message board with my name on it "Thomas Clingan/Agnes Haining.
Ian

Cheers Ian,

I would be interested! Among the many family stories, we were all told that my gr-grandmother had gone off , "back" to Scotland with a Scottish Soldier... and yet, the Dublin area information... some of the things don't quite add up... but still might!

Just in case you recognize any names, Thomas Clingan and Annie Jane Hewitt had the following children:

Albert James Clingan
Annie Constance Hewitt Clingan (my gr-grandmother)
Edith Clingan
Eileen Clingan
George Pierce Clingan (married unknown and had a daughter named May)

I'd love any of the bits and pieces!

I have been able to verify other family stories- including the relation to Thomas Carlyle... on the maternal side of my mother's tree...

Jody
Hi Jody,
The details you have of the Irish James Clingan is the one I was referring to. My Grandfather, James Clingan was a Scot
who married a Liverpool lass (Patricia) Martha Maud Boak.
Details on Boak message board.
If it is of any interest to youI can always send copies of rough
tree outlines from the Scots Clingans, who did drift south and over the border.
Regards
Ian Clingan
