Hi John & Carol,
Just read your post of Dec 2006.
My wife is also a Clissold and Ambrose is her great-great-grandfather. I have a shipping record of Ambrose arriving in Sydney on the vessel Bussorah Merchant 3rd Sept 1839 but can not find any record of Eliza (Elizabeth Smart) coming with him. In the shipping record Clissold is transcribed as Clessoll but I'm sure it's Ambrose Clissold. I have further information on the Clissolds in Australia (Sydney) if you need

Hi, I am helping a friend with her family history and just seen your post reference William Maller 1850 blacksmith of Avening who is her greatgrandfather. Have tacked down his parents as James and Mary, thats as far as we've got at the moment, but we would be very interested to know how you are related to him.
Thanks
Pat & Clare

The Clissold line I have goes back to Samuel C marrying Elizabeth Hogg in Stroud 1787. Seems as though all Clissolds came from the Cotswolds area of Gloucestershire. Sorry but I do not have your Ann Clissold. On my mother in law's side I have a Sheila Clissold marrying a Palmer (my surname but no relation), and by a great coincidence at my wife's beach cafe someone asked me if I had come across her maiden name before and it was an Ann Clissold who was Sheila's sister. It was this Ann whose tree I looked into that got me back to Samuel bn abt 1765 ~ Steve

I have an Ann Clissold( b. 1791 in Bisley,Gloucester) m. to Samuel Neale(b. in Stroud,Gloucester)-in the 1841 Census they had a John Clissold living with them who listed his age as 70 (b. 1771)-I'm assuming this was her father-do you have any info re: this line?

Hi John, thanks for the reply. I have John Walter Clissold b. 1852 Chatham one of 8 children, his father John Clissold b. Stroud 1810. This John's parents were Samuel Clissold and Elizabeth Hogg who m. 1787 in Stroud. All Clissolds appear to come from the Cotswolds area of Gloucestershire. Have you heard of Clissold Park in n. London? A very romantic story attached to it! The tale is available on the internet. Best wishes - Steve, on a wet Isle of Wight

Steve,
My wife's Mother was a Clissold, a descendant of a Ambrose Clissold, b abt 1815 Minchinhampton area. Ambrose was one of six children of John clissold b abt 1786 and Hannah Holdman b abt 1790. One of Ambrose's brothers was John b abt 1811. The children all appear to have been baptised at Minchinhampton.
Ambrose and wife Eliza emigrated to Australia in 1839.
Perhaps your John Walter is the brother of our Ambrose. They appear to have lived in the Slad area and worked in the wool mill but our information is sketchy and we would be delighted to share any information to fill the gaps
Regards John & Carol Clifford
