Hello,

Thanks for your post. I'm related to the Clopper family through the Chambers family. My 3rd great grandmother, Rebecca McKibbin Pierce, was named for Rebecca Chambers.

The book by Edward Clopper is filled with references to my family, including both the Pierce and McKibbin families.

I'd like to share information. The photos in the Clopper book are great, and I suspect that the Clopper collection must have photos of my Pierce and McKibbin families. Would I need to check with the Cincinnati Historical Society ... also would it be possible to check with Helen Gregory to see if she knows of any Pierce or McKibbin photos?

Many thanks,

David Pierce

If you think it's OK, let me know her phone number or e-mail address. I'm always interested in old pictures, etc. and depending on where she currently resides, maybe I could meet her some day.
Hello Marianne,

It is great to hear from a fellow descendant. Beechwood is no longer standing as well as the Woodlands in Clopper, MD. It is very sad. Many of the letters and family mementos were given to the Cincinnati Historical Society. They have boxes of the Clopper stuff. Also, a lady named Helen Caulfield Madine Gregory is also a Clopper descendant and she grew up an lived at the Woodlands. She has lots of pictures and paintings as well as the Clopper furniture from the early 1800s! I recently met her this past month even though I have been talking with her for years. Hope some of this helps.

Hello Laura: I am a direct descendant of John Clopper (B. 1760) brother of Nicholas, etc. I just finished reading "An American Family" and could not believe that all the letters and documents survived! Can you shed any light on what happened to "Beechwood"? Is it still there? My husband is an antiques dealer and I came upon some information that family items were sold at auction through Cowans in Cincinnati in 2001 (several tin types and books) and a miniature portrait of Joseph Clopper (1802-1861) in 2009. It's sad that these items are no longer in the family. Do you know if all of the documents are still with family members, or are they also gone? Feel free to e-mail me at: rwandmw@yahoo.com Perhaps we can share information. I live in Western Pa. near Pittsburgh. Are you in the Cincinnati area and are you acquainted with Bill Bogardus who wrote "Dear Cousin"? I don't have any information beyond the Cloppers arriving in New York somewhere around 1650. Have you read Witcraft's book? That gives the most information I have seen. It would be great to hear from you. I have only known about the Clopper branch of the family for the past eight months - someone had spelled the name "Clapper" and consequently we had either no information or incorrect information. Some days I feel like a detective! Thanks, Marianne Wagner, Sewickley, PA

Hello Kevin: I am a direct descendent of John Clopper (b. 1760), brother of Nicholas Clopper (b. 1766) John was married to Sarah Noble and I have no information on either one of them, especially Sarah. If you have anything tucked away in your archives that could shed some light on these two, I would be most grateful. John and Sarah's son, John Crawford Clopper (b. 1793) apparently was a Physician in Philadelphia. He married Anna Marie Kauck (b. 1796 in Philadelphia) and they moved to Murfreesboro, Tenn. in 1816. I keep wondering where John Crawford Clopper studied medicine??? Lots of questions! Thanks, Marianne

Cornelius Jansen Clopper is my 8G Grandfather.

You indicate that he arrived in New Amsterdam in 1650. John B. Witcraft in "Cornelius Jansen Clopper and his Descendants" suggests he was here "as early as 1652." What is your source for the earlier date, and do you happen to have his father's and/or mother's name?

To Mclopper36, My Notes for David Clopper follow. His father is Jacob Clopper and he has a brother John (my line). Jacob's family was the earliset Clopper family into Blair's Valley, probably just after 1850. Jacob was born near Leitersburg to Henry Clopper & Barbara Ritter Clopper (1776-1858).

Notes from my PAF:

EACT:This family seems to have lived in the same area, north of Clearspring at the junction of Polecat Road and Blairs Valley Rd. In 1989 the was still a Counrty store there. Across the road is a small park and picnic area sign posted " Clopper Grov, Blair's Valley Ch of God" and now belonging to the nearby church where most all of these folks are buried.

OBIT: David Clopper was a native of Blair's Valley, Maryland. He was born on February 7, 1841. He was the son of Jacob and Catharine Snavely Clopper. He was a prosperous farmer and a well-known resident of the western section of Washington County. In Scharf's "History of Western Maryland" p. 976b, he is listed as School District Trustee for the year ending May, 1882. This was Election District 4- School District School No. 7. He was a staunch Democrat and was active in political affairs in that section. He was a member of the Church of God in Blair's Valley and was esteemed by all who knew him. For years he conducted a general merchandise store.

David Clopper was married to Sarah Bartles. The children of David and Sarah Clopper were:
John Henry (1863, Joseph Franklin (1865), Rebecca (1868), Sarah (1870), David M.
My Great Grandfather was David Clopper who lived in Blairs valley. His wife was Lottie, he had a son Joe (Frank) Clopper. However David's Dad I thought was John Clopper and not Jacob. I would like to find out some info on this such as, civil war service? Where we originated from and for what reason did we come over? Those kinds of things. I don't know very much about my blood line.

Hello Laura,

Thank you for posting this on the web. It is good to hear from a fellow Clopper! I have actually had some correspondance with your mother Ellen a few years ago by mail. I have moved numerous times since then, and we kind of lost touch. I am a direct descendant of Andrew Clopper (b.1771) who was the brother of your ancestor Nicholas Clopper (b. 1766). Our ancestors grew up together at the Woodlands in Clopper, MD. Would you please contact me via e-mail, that would be great. I look forward to continuing this conversation!

Sincerely,
Kevin Clopper
kevinclopper@hotmail.com

Hello,

I am a direct descendant of Edward Nicholas Clopper, the man who wrote "An American Family." His daughter, Rhoda Clopper, was my grandmother.

I would be very interested in this family Bible. Moser was my great-grandmother, Grace's, maiden name. E.N. and Grace owned "Beechwood," the family home on Spring Grove Avenue in Cincinnati. They, as well as other members of my family, are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery.

I would like to connect with other members of the Clopper family throughout the U.S. and other parts of the world. I invite any correspondence, both from my family or those who knew them. I would also be interested in knowing what happened to those who stayed in Holland after Cornelius Jansen Clopper emigrated to the U.S. in 1650.

Thank you for posting this!

Laura Masterson (nee Mitchell), daughter of Ellen H. Mitchell (nee Hubbard), daughter of Rhoda C. Hubbard (nee Clopper).

Edward Nicholas Clopper 1773-1857 / Hetty Young Clopper 1795-1876 GREENSBURG, PA

I am looking for living descendants of Edward N. Clopper and his wife Hetty Barclay Young Clopper (dates above) of Greensburg, PA.

Reason is rather important! Has to do more with his wife than him. Hetty Barclay Young was the daughter of Judge John Young of Greensburg and his wife Maria Barclay. John Young was one of the first converts to the Swedenborgian faith in America - a Christian religion that values charity and usefulness in life - and he is said to be the one who converted John Chapman to the faith in Greensburg between 1795-1800. Before he became known as America's folk hero, Johnny Appleseed.

Reason for my interest is that I have located the owner of portraits of John Young and his wife painted by Gilbert Stuart in Philadelphia in 1794, and am trying to convince the owner to donate them to a museum in PA. If I am successful, I want to invite as many descendants of the Youngs as possible - and right now, apart from the family that owns the portraits (who inherited them from Frank Young Clopper, who never married), Edward and Hetty are my best hope! Would have to be a descendant from one of their daughters, Elizabeth Forrester Clopper, Margaret Jane Clopper, or Mary Young Clopper.

Get in touch soon if you have John Youngs DNA! I want to invite you to a PARTY!

Come forth please!

Arthur - Miami

Re: Cloppers of York County

Andrew and Edward N. Clopper were two of the eight children of Cornelius Jansen Clopper III and Rachel Low, who were both born in NY, NY in 1735 and 1740, respectively. They married March 7, 1757 in New York. They had 8 children: Elizabeth, b Dec 16, 1758; John, b Oct 26, 1760; Peter, Nov 20, 1764; Nicholas, Nov 3, 1766; Rachel, b Jul 11, 1769, d Jul 27, 1772; Andrew, b Sep 18, 1771; Edward N. b Nov 18, 1773; and Abraham D. b Feb 10, 1776. The mother, Rachel, died in 1780. Cornelius married in 1783 Christiana Cassatt, a widow. They had two more children: Cornelius and Francis Cassatt. There is a small book entitled 'Cornelius Jansen Clopper and His Descendants', which sets forth most of this. It is not complete. I know nothing else about the Cloppers, as I am researching Ann Torrance and her parents, Charles and Elizabeth (Galbraith) Torrance.

Deborah,

I am trying to obtain more information about Edward N. Clopper b. Nov. 17, 1773 Baltimore, MD d. May 17, 1857 in Greensburg, PA (just east of Pittsburgh) and was thrilled to find your posting on the Clopper family message board.

I am pretty certain this is the same Clopper family, although I had Edward N. Clopper's wife listed at Hetty Barclay Young (Clopper) b. 1795 d. 1876. Could easily be my mistake, or he could have married twice. I am a descendant of the Barclay family, and am researching the Young family (Judge John Young of Greensburg, PA). Young's only descendants it would appear were Cloppers. I found information on Edward N. Clopper in the History of Westmoreland Cty., PA (1889 or so).

Notations I have show that Edward N. Clopper had 6 children (Mary Young Clopper married R.W. Burgess of Washington, DC), Elizabeth Forrester Clopper (married William M. Stewart of Philadelphia), Edward D. Clopper (desceased), Margaret Jane Clopper, Col. John Young Clopper, and Frank Young Clopper. Edward N. Clopper was a storekeeper I believe.

Would you be interested in selling that family bible? If so, please let me know as I am very very interested in it. If not, I would love to pay you for photocopies of any family genealogical notations in it.

I grew up in Greensburg, PA and there is a Clopper Ave. there. I can provide you with some more interesting information about Youngs and Barclays.

Kind regards,

Arthur Humphrey
Coral Gables, FL
email: afh143@aol.com

Deborah,

In re-reading your entry of Sept. 13, 2003, I note that your Edward N. Clopper and his wife Mary C. (mrried 1865) were much younger than mine (b. 1773). All the same, I wonder whether he might have been the son of Edward N. Clopper of Greensburg (this Edward N. had a son who was listed as Edward D. - desceased by 1882 at time History of Westmoreland Cty. was written).

But Pittsburgh is only an hour west of Greensburg, and it wouldn't surprise me if he did have a son who moved west to Pittsburgh.

I am still intererested that Bible if you want to sell it.

Rgds,

Arthur Humphrey
Edward N. Clopper

Jack,

It would seem that we are probably talking about two different Edward N. Cloppers (although it seems hard to fathom, given that names are almost identical, dates very similar, and that they were both residents of Pa. at one time).

My Edward N. Clopper was born Nov. 17, 1773 in Baltimore, MD. He died May 17, 1857(I believe ) in Greensburg, PA, aged 84. He married Hetty Barclay Young b. 1795 d. 1876 and had at least 6 children. He was a shop-keeper. Information obtained from the History of Westmoreland County, PA 1882.

Given that he was 22 years older than this wife, and History of Westmoreland County indicates that he "intermarried" with Hetty Barclay Young, I wonder if she might have been a second wife?

I have ordered a copy of the book you refer to, and will try to see if I can make any sense out of this!

Arthur Humphrey
afh143@aol.com

He was married to Hetty Barclay Young b. 1795 d. 1876, and is buried in the Old St. Clair Cemetery in Greensburg, PA.

Undertand he had 6 children (Mary Young Clopper, Elizabeth Forrester Clopper, Edward D. Clopper, Margaret Jane Clopper, and Col. John Young Clopper (Colorado?). Was originally from Baltimore and moved west to Greensburg, Was a store keeper.

Clopper's wife Hetty Barclay Young was the daughter of Judge John Young (a Scotsman, and Greensburg's first judge). He also inherited the title Laird of Forrester, and that is on his grave. He and his first wife, Maria Barclay Young, were the ones who converted John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed) to the Swedenborgian faith.

There is a Clopper Ave. in Greensburg, PA, and I have some notations about the family I can provide. I am a descendant of the Barclay family of Greensburg, and therefore indirectly related to Cloppers.

I understand one Clopper descendent inherited portraits of John Young and / or his wife Maria Barclay that were painted in Philadelphia by Gilbert Stuart. If anyone knows of their whereabouts, please get in touch with me!

Cloppers of York County

I've been doing a lot of research on my family, but have come to a seemingly dead end. My ancestors are from York County, PA and then go back to Maryland. My great grandfather Charles Torrance Clopper was born in York 26Sep1883. For a while I believed his father to be a Hamilton Clopper, but newspaper articles I have found had him as a Junior. I'm pretty sure Charles' grandfather was a Charles Torrance Clopper born in MD in 1801(or 1808?), and that his father was an Andrew Clopper b. 1771 of Baltimore who married an Ann Torrance (due to the Torrance middle name). Andrew's brother is Edward N. Clopper that I had noticed you writing about. Do you have any information on this line or can you confirm any of this? In the 1870 census they had their name as Clapper. Anyway, any info would be of great help. One thing I did find on Edward N. Clopper was that he had a first wife named Grace.

That appears to be exactly the same data as I have from Ms Joanne Hoover in October 1996. I have nothing additional on that side.

Vis-a-vis Clopper: I have John Clopper's parents and grandparents and some speculative further Clopper's in the form of some IGI material about a group around Johan Cordt /Kloeppers/ from Evangelical Lutheran-Petershagen, Minden, Westfalen, Preussen; ch. 25 Jul 1700.

If you want the Clopper material pls cantact me at jackclopper@aol.com and advise FH program name.

I am engaged to a descendant of John Clopper and Nancy Lecron. I have John born in Antrim Township, Franklin Co. PA in 1796 and dying in Leitersburg, Washington County, MD on March 24, 1878.

I have Nancy Lecron's parents as Simon Lecron and Elizabeth Lyday. Elizabeth was born on May 25, 1771 and died on February 17, 1801 in Leitersburg, MD. Simon was born on October 20, 1765 in Lancaster, PA. He died on June 15, 1814 in Waynesboro, PA. I have Simon's second wife as Sarah Lyday, who he married on July 31, 1802.

Simon's parents were Jacob Lecron/Legron (spelling may have changed) and Dorothea Blanck. I have Dorothea born about 1720 in Schwagern Germany and marrying Jacob Legron on June 19, 1753. Jacob was born in Schonau Germany around 1720 and died sometime before 1776 in Washington County, MD.

Beyond that, I'm stuck. Hope that helps.

Please see my message posted in regards to Mary Caroline McClintock Clopper. I have a family bible that my dad bought at a flea market or yard sell. He was all over the country so no telling what city or state he obtained this bible. My dad passed away in 1992. On the front of this leather bound bible is the name Mary C. Clopper. It was given to her on her first anniversary from her husband Edward N. Clopper and contains several births, marriages and deaths.
