Re: Lenard or Leonard Jackson Clothier

Leonard Jackson Clothier was born 27 June 1904 in Blackfoot, Idaho. He married July1925, Eva Gloria Gourley, born 4 July 1904 in Thatcher, Arizona. She died 28 December 1940 in Los Angles, California. Leonard then married Jessie E. Richardson on 11 October 1941. Leonard died 16 January 1958 in Los Angles, California, and Jessie died on the 12 January 1979 at the same place.
I show no record or documentation that Leonard was ever married a third time. Since he was 21 when first married and then married second within a year of the first wife’s death, and that he died 17 years later still married to Jessie, it is logical that he was never married to a third woman of any name.
I ASSume that someone picked up the death of Elizabeth Saltsman Clothier from the California Death Index and due to the fact that she died in Los Angeles put her together with Leonard. I see no evidence of this marriage in any of the records.
Since Elizabeth lived in Pennsylvania with her parents Milton and Stella Saltzman, it is likely that she married into the Strawbridge/Clothier line and not the Ira Clother line.
Hope this helps,
Tony Clemente
Lenard or Leonard Jackson Clothier

Ok.....there exists some dispute regarding this individual and who he was married to. Two separate parties claim that he was married to Gloria Eva Gourley and Elizabeth Gloria Saltsman. Gloria Eva was allegedly born in AZ and Elizabeth was born in OH. According to the 1930 Los Angeles Co., CA Census, Lenard/Leonard's wife was E. Gloria and was born in AZ, which tends to support the contention that he was NOT married to Elizabeth Saltsman (at least in 1930). Curiously, Gloria died in 1940. Elizabeth lived until 1996. It seems the logical question is: Was Lenard/Leonard married to both women? Gloria Gourley 1st and Elizabeth Saltsman second?

Can someone shed some light on this controvery?

Clothiers of Koylton Township, Tuscola County, Michigan

Hello! I have done alot of research regarding the Clothier Family that lived in the Koylton Township, Tuscola County, Michigan area. Although I do not have any real family connection. Besides as a teenager I lived on Clothier Road and I have also done extensive research on Siple Cemetery where most of these Clothiers are buried.

Recently from a good friend I have a very old photo album with tin type photos of the Clothiers and other family or friends.

I am currently I am researching and writing a book on Pioneers of certain Townships in Sanilac, Lapeer and Tuscola Counties. I am containing the James Clothier Sr. Family from Koylton Township, Tuscola County, Michigan in my book. The following paragraph regarding this family is going my book:

JAMES CLOTHIER Sr. was born on October 1, 1824 in England and died on November 29, 1908 in Koylton Township, Tuscola County, Michigan. In the 1850s, he came to Tuscola County and settled on 160 acres of land in Section 26 of Koylton Township. He married Eliza Symonds in England. Eliza Symonds was born in 1826 in England and died on January 4, 1887 in Koylton Township, Tuscola County, Michigan. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Clothier. They were James Jr. (married Mary C. Wooliever), William (married Emily Jane Symonds), George, John (married Mary Jane Wellwood), Albert (died as a child), Mary J. (married Francis Siple), Eliza A., Manzo (married Minnie Cargill), Francis (married Mary D’Arcy), Elizabeth (died in infancy) and Otis (died in infancy). Mr. and Mrs. Clothier are both buried in Siple Cemetery, Koylton Township, Tuscola County, Michigan.

If anyone believes they have a family connection to this family please email directly at genniegeek@yahoo.com.

Thank You in Advance,

Amy E. My wife also descends through Samuel. Not sure off hand why I posted looking for Jacob's parents. Haven't looked at Clothier info in a while. I did run across someone a while back that made a very compelling case that there was no Hannah Rihl and that the info that name came from was mistaken. He argued Samuel's wife was Ann Baker. It seemed to make sense. I'll try to find it. Why don't you send me an email and I'll respond directly.

Thanks,

Greg

Re: John III

You are absolutely correct in your information regarding which John died during the Revolutionary War. This mistake has been perpetuated for well over 100 years and mistakenly documented by the misinformation given to and used by the D.A.R. I have spent in excess of 40 years researching this family and have copies all of the documents pertaining to the four John’s listed below, including Rev. War Records. This problem started because both father and son were in the war and their files at the National Archives were mixed together in the 1800’s. Some of them have now been separated so that two files exist, but the problem still exists because of printed references and family history which has been accepted as gospel for well in excess of a century. Here’s the short of it.

John the first (son of Jeremiah), married to Sarah, was born 1678 and died after 2 May 1748 and before 13 March 1748/49 (proved by land records and property inventories)
John the second (John1), married to Hannah, was born 3 January 1707 and died 15 January 1796 (proved by property deeds and division of property by will)
John the third (John1, John 2), married to Eunice, was born 1734 and died after 18 April 1801 and before 3 November 1803 (proven by 1800 census as well as land records, court records with property inventories, division of real and personal property. [my GGG Grandfather was executor or the estate])
John the fourth (John1, John 2, John 3), never married, was born 1758 and was killed 14 November 1777 (Rev. War Records; pg 7 of Connecticut Muster Roll shows death date – Last appears on Pay Roster for 1 Oct. thru 1 Nov. 1777 – pg 3 of Conn. Muster Roll shows death date and pay due of 8 shillings, 4 pence for period of 1 Nov. to 14 Nov. - Say His Head Was Blown Off By A Cannonball, No Record Of This Fact Has Been Found. The Cannonball Story Is Supposedly Documented In "Record In Connecticut Men Of The Revolution, War Of 1812, And Mexican War." Other Records Show That He Was Killed In November 1777 At The Battle Of Ft. Mifflin On Mud Island In The Delaware River. Ft. Mifflin Was Abandoned After A Brave Attempt To Hold Philadelphia.

I hope that this info will help all of those trying to sort out the John problem for any of those who are looking to sort it out.
Tony

hi pam

i would be very pleased to show you the tree - the problem is that i am new to this "community" feature on ancestry and i do not know how to share with people who are not in the tree (now if it was genes reunited, it would be simple)
i could send you a gedcom if you will give me your e mail address or do you have any suggestions?

I knew about Gus who died in the first world war - he spent some time convalescing in the east end with siblings of my granddad, Charles - we have a letter from the NZ family to my great aunt Alice.

The original John was one of 6 children born to his Dad Charles, but i can find no mention (yet) of his mother. Like all his sons (bar Edwin) he came to london after his wife(henrietta nee Budgett)died. The poor man died of Cholera in the 1840,s - i have the certificate - Henry, his son was present at the death.

I could go on all day!! but must dash now to the shops

john

hello sylvia - hope you are still researching given that this thread is a couple of years old. I am the G G G grandson of John Clothier born 1771 in Stratton on the Fosse. Thomas joseph was his son and Thomas John his grandson - this is my line. I know quite a lot about the NZ connection through the help of Sandra Matcham - all down to the 2 brothers of Thomas John who emigrated - the 2 sisters did not fair so well.

could we have a look at each others trees perhaps?

John Clothier

My great grandfather was Charles Chester, 1848-; he was the 8th child of Samuel and Rachel Crawford and he and his wife Charity Jane went into Oklahoma on the 1890 run. Samuel married a second Rachel--Carter, the mother-in-law of his son, Asa, after Rachel Crawford died. Samuel lived with Charles and his sons in Oklahoma for a short period.

I do not have any pictures of Samuel, Rachel or their other children. I would love to see yours. You are the first Clothier cousin I have found.
My family tree is the Clothier Wolfe Family Tree and is public on ancestry.com---Search "Samuel Clothier" on family trees to access.

I know that you are looking for information on Eli, but I would like some information on Mary Jennings. She was married to my Great-great Grandfather Erasmus Lewis. I have little info on him, but just recently discovered that union. I would be glad to furnish our infomation. I know that there were several children at home upon the death of his second wife and I wonder if you Great Great Aunt Cora Jennings Bright was among them? So we might be distantly related.

Helen Peterson

Could we get together on some of your findings? I'm in Knox Co. Ohio. I'm trying to find more info on Mary Jane Hall Clothier. Let's talk. I've been doing family research off and on for 5 yrs. Not all on the Clothiers of course. My son's grandmother is still living in California, the only daughter of Elbie. There are two children still living.
