Re: F. Charles Clouse, Webster Co., IA

I am a decendent of F. Charles Clouse from his daughter Catherine. I found out that Frantz Charles Clauss was born 10 March 1804 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France. His first name is in Latin on his birth certificate as Franiscus Carolus Clauss.

His parents are Mathias Clauss and Marie Anna Wagner. Marie Anna Wagner born 4 Jan. 1768 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France and died 26 Nov 1833 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France.

Elizabeth Fischer was born 19 Jun 1810 in Aschbach, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France. Her father was Bernard Fischer.

F. Charles and Elizabeth were married 12 Jan 1832 in Aschbach, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France. Marriage banns were posted on 25 Dec 1831 for Charles Clauss and Elizabeth Fischer in Aschbach, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France.

F. Charles and Elizabeth had several more children than what we have had listed before.
1. Leo Clouse
2. Charles Clouse born 5 Dec. 1832 Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France
3. Mathias Clauss born 17 Jun 1834 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France. He died 25 Nov 1835 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France. This Mathias was the first of 3 Mathias's.
4. Bernard Clauss born 17 Aug 1835 and died 5 Nov 1842 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France. This Bernard was the first of two.
5. Mathias Clauss born 9 Jan 1839 and died 14 Feb 1840 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France.
6. Joseph Clauss born 21 Nov 1840 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France.
7.Mathias Clauss born 11 Sep 1842 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France. He is the one that made it to America.
8. George Clauss born 24 Jan 1845 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France.
9. Bernard Clauss born 1 Apr 1847 Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France.
10.Catherine Clouse born 24 Nov 1848 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France.
11. Francois Louis Clauss born 23 Mar 1850 in Stundwiller, Wissembourg District, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) Region, France.
12.Elizabeth Clouse born about 1851
13. John Clouse born Jan 1857 New York.
14. Joseph Clouse born 1858 New York.

The village of Stundwiller and Aschbach are only a mile apart. There are still Clausses and Fischer being buried there, but they are current burials, you can't go find old graves because they bury people in the same spots. If it is like Germany then you lease your plot for around 25 years and unless a family member keeps paying the lease you are dug up and someone else gets buried there.

I tried looking for papers for when they came to America but the emmigration papers are hit and miss.

If you want to go through some of the records they can be found http://www.bas-rhin.fr/etat-civi. That was the site as of 27 June 2011

I am looking for information on James K Clouse. He was born in Shellmound Tennessee about 1834 and died in Chattanooga in 1914. He was the son of George Washington Clouse, who was the son of Aaron "Leatherman" Clouse. James was also a Confederate Veteran and was a Prisoner of War during the Civil War. I know his wife's name was Minerva but I do not have her maiden name. I would appreciate any information anyone might have. Thanks, Shirley

I'm looking for my family info, my mom's mother was a Clemmer and I traced the Clemmer's back to a James Clemmer and his wife Sarah Anne, her last name was unknown, but a marriage record from their location saids her last name was Clouse.
The record states that Sarah Anne Clouse wife of James Clemmer was born 1811 in Pennsylvania, that her father's name was Jacob Clouse and her mother was Elizabeth, but no last name, some research would suggest she may have been Elizabeth Dague, but I can't find proof of that.
I would appreciate any help!

Hi, Lori. I have Sarah Woodhouse, daughter of Henry Woodhouse and Sarah Keeling, with three husbands also. Are these the three you have and dated approximately the same also?

1st Cason Moore, m. abt. 1678
2nd John Sanford/Sandeford/Sandiford, m. btwn. 1678-1688
3rd William Cloues/Clous/Cloyse/Clouse, m. abt 1694

Do you know if Susannah and Margaret were offspring of one of these other two, and if so, which? I have not seen the estate papers myself, so don't know if they were listed by first name only or what.

Maybe some of the "Pennsylvania" Clouses will recognize one of these other surnames as neighbors or have other family intermarriages. That would at least provide a link for them to Phettiplace, even if it doesn't help the "Tennessee" Clouses get there (yet)!

Not to disagree, but the Book of Remembrance of the Clouse Clan, copyright 1995 by Della P. "Pat" Franklin, actually begins with "Chapter 1, A brief outline of the life of George Clouse I, our common ancestor." The very first sentence is, "The name of the parents and the birthplace and birthdate of George Clouse I is unknown."

Ms. Franklin does have a chapter in the book (Chapter 10), entitled "Christopher Clouse, Sr. of Pennsylvania." On the Table of Contents page, Ms. Franklin also notes for this chapter that he is believed to be a brother of George Clouse I. However, there is nothing contained within the chapter that explains why she thinks so, other than the similarity of the names of his children and those of George Clouse I.

On page 562 of the book, Ms. Franklin gives some information about Phettiplace Clouse and his son, William Cloys (relationship documented in a land transaction). Ms. Franklin points out that this son, William, died in Princess Anne County, Virginia, in 1699 and left a large estate. She says that no sons were listed in the estate papers, although two daughters were (Susannah and Margaret). Ms. Franklin offers no other discussion on descendants of Phettiplace or his son, William.

I think that we Clouses must be very careful in passing on information without sources. While it is very possible that Thomas 1710-1743 descended from William and Phettiplace, there does not appear to be any information documenting this lineage. Nor does there appear to be any documentation available that shows that Christopher Clouse of PA and George Clouse of VA/TN were brothers, though it is also very possible and even likely.

Ms. Franklin generally did an excellent job researching the various descendants of George Clouse I. However, she did make errors on two of the sons, George II and Aaron. It is certainly possible that other errors were made as well, particularly since the bulk of her book concerns her own line from George I through his son John. For obvious reasons, this was her focus, not the other descendants.

Information was also not as readily available 15 years ago. I believe that Ms. Franklin traveled extensively and penned many letters to obtain the information she provides us. We should be very appreciative of her work but read no more into it than what is there, and even check it when sources are not listed. As informative as her book is, it is not a primary source. But it does give us excellent places to start our own research.

I will point out again that the first sentence in the book tells us what Ms. Franklin thought herself of the origins of George Clouse I: the names of the parents and birthplace and birthdate of George Clouse I are unknown.

Don't mean to be so preachy. I'd love to find out differently from anyone who knows otherwise - so if someone out there knows, please share!

And how did they get to Ohio, Indiann, Pennslyvania, etc. I am related to the Clouse through Maraget Little who married a Clouse. My mother's first husband married Benjamin Martin Clouse. He was my two sisters and 1 brother's father.
Frances K

Hi cathy, I am probably your cousin here in Tx. I have just begun the family tree thing and found all the info, book, articles, etc. I am obsessing over this all like a puzzle. Do you think phettiplace is related? I found someone had posted a land record identying his son william cloys. One tree had one William msrried to sarah moore and she traces back to 1300. I wish it were all true. I would love to research with you.

Lori in Galveston

Thanks for your post! The M.L.L. and Mary L names do indeed come from census records. I have Pat Franklin's book -- but as you pointed out -- there aren't any sources to help clarify this situation.

But I am wondering if Mary and Elzadie are the same person and how she came to that conclusion.

I guess we just keep looking.
Hi. My name is Lynn Gleason. I have been researching and adding info to my daughter, Karey & Matt Mortimer's Family Tree.
Oliver Clouse was my GGG grandfather. Oliver's son, Epheram Clouse was my GG grandfather. Epheram's daughter, Anna May Clouse was my great grandmother. Anna was married to my great grandfather David Conrad Ackeret. Anna & David's son, Harry Gerald Ackeret was my grandfather. Harry Gerald Ackeret married Myrtle Russell. Their daughter, Janet Marie Ackeret is my mother.
Would love to hear from you and share info. If you wish you may contact my daughter here on the ancestry site or you may e-mail me at my e-mail address: SweeteaLMG@aol.com.
~Lynn Gleason~

I tried the link, too, but with no success.

It appears to be a link to copy(ies) of pages of Pat Franklin's Clouse book. In my copy, Pat lists M.L.L. as a daughter in the 1860 census, and Mary L. in the 1870 census. At the end of her section on Benjamin and Susan(nah) Suttles Clouse, Pat lists the child Elzadie with a very close birthdate to what Mary L. would have. Elzadie was possibly a nickname for Mary L.

Pat lists no sources, and I only did a quick look-through but saw nothing that indicated why she thought Mary L. and Elzadie were the same person. Much of the information in her book came from later descendants, so it's possible that she received information on Elzadie from a daughter/son who actually knew her and her name. Nothing documented that I saw on my quick look, though.

Looking at my info on Benjamin Clouse (b. 1821) who married Susan Ann Suttle (b. 1829)... I am concerned that there is an error on their children.

I have a Zadie Clouse listed as their daughter she was born 1867 and died in 1891 and is buried in Board Valley Cem. She is said to have married Charles Stanton Bradley.

Does anyone else have this info? If so -- what are your sources for this? There is not an Zadie or Elzadie that appears on census records with Benjamin Clouse's family in 1870 or 1880. Only a Mary L. L.

Could anyone help me on this?

Benj Clouse and Susan Suttles dilemma -- need help!

The book I am looking for is "The remembrances of the Clouse Family" I think.
I would like to get a copy. My mother was married to Benjamin Martin Clouse his father was Lafayette Jackson Clouse. I am trying to find out information about John Little and Frances Little who happen to be ggrandparents on both sides of the family the Coleman's and the Colouse's.
Two sisters married, one a Clouse (Margaret Little) one a Coleman ( Stephen Avery Coleman) than my mother married her 3rd cousin on her mothers side of the family. So John and Frances Little are Benjaming Martin Clouse's grandparents on his mothers side of the family the Little's. Also my mothers side of the family the Colemans's because Nancy Jane Little married Stephen Avery Coleman. Confusing isn't it. I just kepp hitting a road block becasue I am trying to fine out where exactly Nancy Jane Little/Coleman and Stephen Avery Coleman were buried. And the name of John Little's wife France's maiden name.
My mother passed away in 1990 I am helping my older sister. Mother wrote down a lot of information for me and my sister remembers a lot but it only toes so far.
Thanks for any help
Frances K I am Frances the fourth in my family.
