Bonjour! Jo-Ann

Roger:

I was able to verify that Oscar was indeed the Okanse/Akanse that married Rosalie Robillard in Ste. Melanie. It appears that Oscar & Rosalie had a child, Joseph Ozias, born 26 April 1872 in Cohoes NY. Rosalie must have died in childbirth or shortly thereafter (haven't found that record yet) as Oscar married Marie Arnault on 19 April 1873. I believe that Oscar was looking for someone to take care of his infant son. Witnesses to the marriage were Louis Arnaud and Pocome Robillard (more evidence that this is the same Oscar).

Thanks for the lead to Cohoes, NY. Cohoes was a mill town and attracted French Canadians to work. Oscar was one of those that moved back and forth between the U.S. and Canada. I would never have thought to look in NY.

Finding him mostly in Quebec (through the Droin Collection) led me to believe that his son Louis was the first of the family to leave Quebec to work. Which now I know was not the case.
Thanks again
Jan

It is not a primary source of information. It should be used as a clue. That's why checks should be made in Cohoes for civil records as well church records. I don't know what records are available there.

Salut !

Roger

Obit : Georges Cloutier - Winnipeg MB

GEORGES CLOUTIER
Winnipeg Free Press
(published on April 16, 2011)

GEORGES CLOUTIER It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Georges Cloutier on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Georges leaves his wife Irène (née Massicotte) and many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Gabriel Cloutier and Lumina Ritchot and son Lucien and several brothers and sisters. Georges and Irène were married for 63 years. Georges was born in St. Norbert on January 12, 1927. He was one of 16 children, Joe (Louisa), Gérard (Angèle), Alphonse (Alice), Maurice (Marie), Clotilde (Maurice Bellerive), Eugène, Thérèse, Georges, Thérèse, Denise (Denis Sabourin), Dolores (Jean Sareault), Rita, Cécile (Bill Buck), Yvette, Marie (Peter Pennie), Jean (Gail). Georges married Irène on November 6, 1948. Georges and Irène were a team together. This was evident in everything they did. They had eight children; Mariette (Arnold Ternowski), Gilbert (Lorraine), Claude (Valentina), Lucien (décédé), Réal (Karen Palmer), Léo (Carmen), Robert (Elena), George (Heather Stagg). Dad also leaves 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Georges loved his family and worked very hard his entire life. He started working at a young age on the family farm. It was an expectation in the Cloutier family that everyone would contribute to the household and this has been a tradition passed on from one generation to another. After Georges married Irène, he began farming near Parc Labarrière in St. Norbert, close to the family farm. In Mom and Dad's effort to support their ever growing family, Dad began learning a trade to bring in a more regular source of income and took up sheet metal work including the installation of furnaces. He made a reputation for himself as a fun spirit who loved a joke and made many lasting friendships in the industry. Georges was an incredible father and together with Irèn, they raised a large family. Dad was a man of honour and had an incredible ethic. He was a mentor to his children. He worked long hours and contributed to the family in every way, including activities in the home. Mom and Dad were partners to the very end. Dad lived a healthy and independent life. He valued God, faith, hope, charity, hard work, individual responsibility, education, honesty and respect. One of his favourite expressions was make yourself useful, he also had a great sense of humour. Dad was not one to believe that good things happened to you because of luck. That was foolish to him. Effort equalled success to Dad and he would never blame others for any bad situation to befall him. Dad enjoyed his retirement and kept busy. He had a talent for construction and problem solving. He would walk into a room and could tell if something was not level. When something needed repair, he would strategize on how to fix it and get it done without delay. Dad will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends. He leaves a legacy of faith and joie de vivre. Nous vous aimerons toujours Papa, Pépère et Grand Pépère. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m on Monday, April 18, 2011 at Mary Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive.

Hi, thanks for your help on this. I got a lot of info from Drouin records, as well as a website devoted to Wilfrid Cloutier and Anita Benoit on http://myspace.keonnected.com/wilfrid/fr/wilfrid_anita.html - this is where they indicate that Wilfrid and Anita were married on 19 July 1909 in the church in St. Paul, Alberta. On that website, there is very little known about Anita's early years because she was an orphan, but I have a lot of that since she was my grandfather Ovila Benoit's sister. I've been wanting to get in touch with someone doing that website, but have so far not been able to find the contact. My information is on http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/6172160/person/-1185852607 and I've some of their photos and information anyway, hoping that someone would get in touch with me, but it has not yet been the case. Thanks again for your help on this - very much appreciated. Jo-Ann

Bonjour Jan,

Oscar Cloutier and Marie Arnault married at St. Joseph church in Cohoes, New York state on 19th of April 1873. Unfortunately, the church records do not show the name of the parents of the spouses. Maybe there are civil records in that town that would provide the name of the parents. I have not checked that possibility.

Oscar is a very rare name in that period in Quebec. I think that this "Oscar" is in fact Okanse Cloutier who married Rose Robillard in Ste-Mélanie (Joliette co) on 25 th April 1853, the son of Prisque Cloutier and Marie Racette. But that needs to be proven.

Salut !

Roger

I am searching for Oscar Cloutier, who married Marie Arnault possibly in Joliette County, Quebec. Their children were Joseph, b. abt 1875, Louis 1883, Marie-Petronille, and Albertine. I can find a death record at St. Charles-Borromee, Joliette County for Oscar, but no marriage record in that parish.

I have searched dilligently through the Drouin Collection looking for him, with no luck.

His son Louis moved to RI in 1904 and died in Woonsocket, RI. I believe that Louis is the only child that moved to the U.S.

Any help getting to the next generation will be extremely helpful.

Thanks in advance for the help
Jan Isosaari
