My line is through James Cloyd, who was supposedly "a Scotsman" who was "born in Londonderry, Ireland." He also supposedly arrived to Pennsylvania in the early to mid 1700s. This is all from the A.D. Cloyd book. As you can tell, it's a little vague.

I am curious as to peoples opinions regarding where the Cloyd surname came from. I have evidence that there is a split, and those who migrated from Ireland via the highlands of Scotland, primarily to Canada, in the 1900's are the Cloyd's from Scotland, while the Cloyd's who migrated from Ireland in the 1800's are from England... possibly Wales.

I am of the belief that my line, that of Ninian, came from England.

I am working on getting more proof of this, but am curious how things might be divided across the board.

I do not believe this is the same Newitt Cloyd. From other postings, there was apparently one from Alabama and one who moved to Iowa. I would be glad to send you the Iowa Newitt Cloyd story, but am currently wintering in Texas. If you still want it, let me know, and I will send it to you when I return in April.

Re: James Cloyd

I hope that you all receive this but in the Will of James Cloyd, a Solomon Laurence was listed as a witness. While searching through Ancestry, I discovered that James Cloyd was listed in a Will for James Lawrence (d: between Aug 1801 and 1802) also in Kentucky. James Lawrence mentioned that James Cloyd was his son-in-law and there was also a Solomon Lawrence listed as James Lawrence's son. From this, I discovered that James William Cloyd married Janette Lawrence (daughter of James Lawrence) on 20 Nov 1764. Janette was born in 1744 in Augusta, VA and died prior to 1800. I was able to track a James Cloyd and the Lawrence family back to Botetourt County, VA.
On 9 Apr 1800, James Cloyd remarried to a Faithful (Hall) Graham (listed as Grimes) in Garrard County, KY. Faithful was the widow of Benjamin Graham. This is how James is connected to my line.
Benjamin Graham's nephew (Thomas, who is my 5th great grandfather) married a Jane (aka Jenny) Cloyd. From my research, all that is known about Jane is that she was possible born in Pennsylvania and that she died around 1837 or 1839 (I can't remember the exact date) in Indiana. The date and location of Thomas Graham and Jane Cloyd's marriage is currently unknown.
Because Benjamin's widow and his nephew both married Cloyds, it is a strong possibility that Jane and James Cloyd are somehow related. Currently, I have no proof of any such relation but I am eagerly searching.
There are several mentions of James Cloyd, a Thomas Cloyd, a John Graham (Benjamin's brother is Lt. John Graham), and several Lawrences are mentioned in some court cases from Botetourt County, VA against some Mann family members and Arbuckles (James Lawrence's daughter Elizabeth married a Thomas Arbuckle). I have not found any transcriptions of the court cases...yet but this seems to be a good lead. However, as far as I can tell, my Graham line comes from Rowan County, NC (it's pretty well documented that Lt. John Graham was born in North Carolina and lived in Rowan County for a number of years before moving near Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky around 1780 and remained there until his death) so I'm not sure if the Grahams mentioned in the Botetourt County, VA records really relate to my Grahams.
Any info that you might have that may help me untangle this info would be greatly appreciated! :D

Lee, 103, who departed this life Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at her residence.

Mrs. Lee was born Aug. 3, 1908, in Charlotte, N.C., a daughter of William James Cloyd and Mattie Lively Cloyd. Her parents moved to Youngstown, Ohio when Vivian was a small child.

After the untimely death of her first husband, Mack Curry, in Detroit, Vivian returned to Youngstown, where she married on Aug. 19, 1939, to the late Nathaniel C. Over the years, she taught hundreds of students throughout the Youngstown area to play and appreciate music, before retiring from the vocation 40 years ago. She also accompanied the notable Dunbar Choral Club, of which her late husband, Nathaniel, was the founder and director.

Vivian’s Youngstown church affiliation began with the Elizabeth Baptist Church until 1943, when she, with her husband, moved to Prospect Street and joined the Third Baptist Church. Until her death, she was their oldest member. She faithfully served as a choir member and choir director until the age of 95, as well as part-time organist, the Angie Johnson Missionary Circle and the Women’s Work Committee.

She leaves her son, Nathaniel and daughter-in-law, Barbara Lee of Ontario, Canada; four granddaughters, Mary Lynn (Paul) Byrd of Texas, Vivianne Potter of New Jersey, her caregiver, Cynthia Lee of Youngstown, and Sylvia (Jerry) Cramer of Louisiana; four step grandchildren, Brent (Karen) Key, Linda (Bryan) Scott and Susan Key, all of Ontario, and Malcolm Key of British Columbia; eight great-grandchildren, Natalie, Camille, Anthony, Ryan, Cate, Hailey, Patricia and Heather; nephews, John (Loretta) Lee, George Freeman of Ohio, Oscar Crawford of Illinois, and Sylvester Crawford of Georgia; nieces, Rhoda Lee, Helen Jackson, Sylvia Harris of Ohio, Eula Oates of Ohio, Beatrice Huff and Genevieve Seymor, both of Kentucky, and Darlene Johnson of Georgia; as well as a large extended family.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home Inc. and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church
http://www.vindy.com/news/tributes/2012/feb/02/vivian-c-le/

I am looking for the parents of my 5th great grandmother. Her name is Jane Cloyd. She died in Monroe (or Morgan County)Indiana in 1837. She was married to a Thomas Graham and they had settled in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky (the actual marriage date and settlement date is unknown). Thomas and Jane (Cloyd) Graham had 7 children total. 6 boys: Samuel L, Robertson, Enoch, John Jefferson, James, and Thomas Madison; and 1 girl: Mary who married Joseph Campbell in Indiana in 1821. The birth dates of Thomas and Jane (Cloyd) Graham's children range from 1795-1811 (that we know so far, there are a couple whom we have not been able to find their birth dates). Since all of the children were born in Crab Orchard, we know that Thomas and Jane (Cloyd) Graham were in Lincoln County, Kentucky as early as 1795. From their son Thomas Madison Graham's obit, we know that his father and mother moved to Indiana around 1814. From a biography of their son Robertson Graham, Thomas Graham Sr was born in North Carolina and his wife Jane Cloyd was born in Pennsylvania.
Any help locating Jane's family would be very much appreciated. I know that in Crab Orchard there was another Graham family (we haven't been able to connect both lines quite yet but a lot of evidence supports their relationship). This family was Benjamin and Faithful Graham. When Benjamin died, Faithful Graham married another Cloyd so I was curious if this Cloyd may also be a relation to my 5th great grandmother Jane.

(Margaret Campbell b.1707, Antrim; killed by Indians, 1764). Her mother was Grissel Hay (b. 1678, Antrim) and father John Campbell (b 11/16/1674 in Londonderry). John Campbell's parents were Duncan Campbell (b.1645, Argylshire) and Mary McCoy (b. 1648, Argylshire, Scotland). Duncan Campbell' father was Andrew Campbell(b. 1609). His father was Hugh Campbell (b.1560). His father was Patrick Campbell (b. about 1530). His father was Duncan Campbell (b. about 1500, Inverary, Argylshire). Don't know much at all about Margaret Campbell's maternal side. Cynthia

I'm trying very hard to get some of my male Cloyd relations to test their Y-DNA, but so far, no luck. We have only one who has. His grandfather was adopted, but his real surname was Cloyd. He has no clue from which Cloyd he descends.

I also believe that their were two separate unconnected lines of Cloyds in Kentucky.

The best I can do is the autosomal DNA Family Finder test on my mother. Her paternal great grandmother was Mary Ellen Cloyd Smith, born in Cumberland County, KY. I'm ordering that test tonight. It will connect my with 5th cousins who have also taken the test.

I am a female and we have no living males left anymore so I am not able to suggest this to anyone on my side. I am from the CLOYD's that were in PA., VA., TN. and MO.
I would like to see a Cloyd DNA project also. As many Cloyd males that are around, I'm shocked that none of them have taken advantage of this. And a few are getting their lines messed up. There was another Cloyd around the time that Ninian Cloyd arrived.

I descend from the Cloyds in Cumberland County. The cost of DNA testing is very affordable.

Do you have copies of the stated references? I have looked in all the census for 1880 and 1900 and I can not find reference to Willie Turk. I believe that if you have those pages it may very well solve my dilemma!

If you have copies of those pages and you don't mind sending them to me, please email them to mark@markcloyd.com.

I was able to find James Clinton Cloyd, but nothing more recent for children that would show Willie Turk.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

You'll find Jas. C. and Eliza J. on the 1880 Burkesville, Cumberland, KY census with Leola - age two. Louisa J. birthplace says Monroe county, KY. All were b. KY although there appears to be some Cloyd histories out of TN so you may want to check prior history there. Children: J. Keene - 1889; Horace A. - 1891; Mable Laurial - 1893; Leah Ola - 1895; Hanse Goff (says b. 1887); Willie Turk - 1889 (appears dates may be off due to the date of 1889 for J. Keene). James Clinton's father from additional site: James; mother: Ridley Ward Philpott.

The mother of my Grandfather was Ula Gertrude Daffron.

I have tried different archives, states he lived, calling Kentucky, even cold calling Cloyd's in Cumberland County, KY. all to no avail.

Information seems pretty sparse.
My great grandparent's James Knox Polk CLOYDE and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Bayless moved to Polk Co., Missouri from Washington Co., TN. in 1857. When they moved they added the "E" at the end of CLOYD. I was told about 25 years ago it was someone in the family believed in owning slaves but James CLOYDE didn't so he took his family and left. If not you need to go back and take some.
Look for any families graves and take pics. Also, you said Newett's grave is supposed to be there but it must be unmarked. On my Dad's side, his great grandad has a head stone but there is nothing that says his wife is buried there. I found the lady who has the cemetery book (it list all the names and where their located) she said Dad's great grandmother was buried there next to her husband. There is no marker with her name on it but it does have large stones at the head and foot of the grave. You might be able to find who has the book and see if it has anything in it. Also you might check at the library to see if they have a copy or tell you who is keeping track of the burials now. All cemeteries have them.
You can contact me direct at:
gntcrane@sbcglobal.net
Waiting to hear from you,
Tina M.
A distant cousin has given me all the info I have about Newitt and Mason. Her last name was spelled Cloyed, but I think the original spelling was without the 'e'. I grew up in Ottumwa, IA which is about 15 minutes from Blakesburg so I have seen Masons tombstone and some of the others. There is a belief that Newitt's grave is there also, but is not marked. I don't know if this is true or not. There is also an oral history I have that was said to have been passed down from Newitt to his granddaughter Laura Christy Knapp, daughter of Hannah. In it Newitt states that 'the Cloyds were of old English stock', that his parents died when he was but a small baby and that he was raised by a Black woman who was a slave of a planter of the community. He also says that as a young child a girl several years older came to visit him and said she was his sister and her name was Emily, but that he never saw or heard from her again. I have not come across an Emily in any of my searches. There are more details of his life he told and I can also pass those on too if anyone would like. I would really like to be able to find out who Newitt's parents were, but I just keep hitting dead ends.

Has this Newett's parents ever been located? My Newitt Cloyd was born in Alabama in 1821, brother Hiram. This would be before the other Newett and Mason Binford were married. There is no record that we can find of the father's name who married Elizabeth Doddridge, daughter of Noah Doddridge. Noah was from Virginia also.

All we know is that Noah was in Hancock and Baldwin Counties in the late 1700's and the early 1800's. He had a land deal with a Joshua Cloud in Georgia. Our Newitt had a son named Joshua, his first, we think, that died apparently because except for one census, he is not heard of again.

The strange thing is that a group of my Texas relatives moved to Iowa and we cannot figure out why unless they had other Cloyd relatives there.

My Newitt married Elizabeth Macon, daughter of Gideon Macon and ? Pugh before he came to Texas. He had two daughters by her Mary and Ophelia. She died and he married my gg grandmother Rebecca Bell in 1850.

Betty
bettystrails@yahoo.com

They had several children and I descended from William who was Perry's father. Other children of Newitt and Mason were Hannah, Caleb, Joseph, Joshua, Benjamin, Sarah, and Gulia.
Re: James Cloyd b. 1680, Ireland?

I'm glad to see some people replied regarding this as it is a question that is always in the back of my mind.

The information you (Neva) posted above is directly paraphrased from the A.D. Cloyd genealogy book. What I would like to find is some other source suggesting the existence of the James Cloyd b. 1680 in Ireland.

Yes, he would be in my direct line (if he exists) :). My descendancy goes James(?)-David-Michael-David-James (moved from VA to OH)-Gordon-Sampson-Chester-then my grandmother, Marion. David, son of the mysterious James, is the oldest person in my line who I am sure about.

I will look for information on the other Cloyds you mentioned...I know I was working on it awhile ago, and I'm not sure if I sent you anything.

-Mary

Rev. Ezekiel Cloyd, son of John Cloyd and Margaret Scott, was born 19 Feb 1768 in Augusta County, Virginia. Married Rebecca Williamson on 17 Sep 1785. Moved to Wilson County, TN between 1789 and 1792 with Rebeccas and two small children. Ezekiel was the founding pastor of what is now Cloyd's Cumberland Presbyterian Church outside of Mt. Juliet, TN. It is believed that Rev. Cloyd died in August 1851.

I am looking for the cemetery in which Rev. Ezekiel Cloyd is buried. Any information would be appreciated.

Mary, I was in touch with a Marte Hoagland Dyess in 2001 who is a descendant of David Cloyd. Quote: I am descended of James Cloyd of Ireland, whose birthdate was 1680. He came to New Castle Co, PA in 1730. He died in 12769 in Chester Co, PA. This Scotchman said to have been at the Siege of Londerry when he was 9 yr. old. It is said he would often lecture the young folks, his grandchildren, on wastefulness & tell them of the privations endured by the besieged in 1689. came to America with him ashis 2 sons, James, Jr. (1707-1803) & David Cloyd (1710-1764). David Cloyd (my lineg=age) & Margaret Campbell's children were James, David, Jrl., Michael, John, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary, Joseph. Margaret was killed by Indians. David died in Botetourt Co, VA.

I can give you Mrs.Dyess's e-mail from 2001, if this fits into your lineage.

My James Cloyd left a will in Lincoln Co, Ky, in 1804 naming his sisters & their children. One was a Margaret & one Polly (Mary?) I have not been able to connect him to any other Cloyds. Could he be David's brother, or the son of David & Margaret? His sister Margaret married my ancestor John Nash. They moved from Ky into TN.
Neva
Neva

Mary,
I don't know about your James CLOYD,b 1680, Ireland but my side comes from: William CLOYD, b. 1751 in Ballymony Antrim, Duchy Ulster, Ireland, he landed in Philadelphia about 1774/1775. He married Jeanette BARR daughter of James BARR and Mary CALDWELL.
William CLOYD was in the Revolutionary War, while in residence of Chester Co., PA. he enlisted and served with the PA. troops 1776-1777. While a resident of Mifflin County, PA. he enlisted and served in the fall 1777-1779.
He allowed his pension 10 Sept. 1832 at which he was 80 yrs. old and living in Washington Co., TN. He died 6 April 1837.
There is a James CLOYD, b. 1-9-1782 probably in VA., youngest son of James & Jean CLOYD,from VA. they moved to Indiana, then to Kentucky, later to Pike Co., MO. then to Decater, IL.
Since my William landed in PA. & ended up in TN. & the above James went from VA. & ended up in IL. I think these CLOYD's could have been anywhere.
I have some info on my William CLOYD (I don't know who sent it to me yrs. ago)that was copied and it has a contents sheet, it starts with "Section 1 - Descendants of James CLOYD,(1680-1769) of Chester Co., PA.... Section 2 - Descendants of David CLOYD (1700-1792)of Augusta Co., VA...Section 3-Descendants of John CLOYD (died 1759)in Augusta Co., VA...... Section 4 - Descendants of William CLOYD, 1751-1837) of Washington Co., TN....from there it goes on to a total of 8,. #5 Daniel CLYDE,CLOYD, in New Hamp., #6 Edmond BASYE, in Fauquier Co., VA... #7 Elizabeth TAPP in Spottaylvania Co., VA..... #8 and brief sketches of Ingels, Jones, Marshall and Smith families.
You may contact me direct at ...gntcrane@sbcglobal.net
I hope this helps you,
Tina CRANE
