Dear George,
If he was a Coachman slave, chances are he was from the West Indies or Barbados. They originated from England to that area prior to the states. They mainly grew sugarcane in Barbados, then indigo and rice in Georgetown,SC.I have also read that some slaves were brought to West Indies from West Africa. They were also notoriousfor "willing" slaves to their heirs, thus I believe your ancestors would remain in the same family. Hope this can narrow your search.
Good Luck Jamie

Does anyone know why Joseph Coachman used the title "Captain"? He was too young to have served in the Revolution and too old for the War of 1812. So where did the title come from?

I know his father, James Coachman, was a Captain in Marion's Brigade.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Dear Patricia,
Perhaps I can help a little. I know that Bonnell Ponteaux Coachman was born 21 Feb. 1922, in Donalsonville, GA, son of Bonnell Villaponteaux Coachman and Ruth Butler. He had five sisters - he was the only boy. He attended the Citadel 9 Sept 1940 and dropped out 18 Sept. 1941. Bonnell married Peggy Askew in June 1946 and as you know was killed in Dec 1947.
He had one son Bonnell Ponteaux Coachman born the 10th of April 1948. Peggy married William Graham Love in 1950. I thought that he adopted Bonnell and changed his name to Love. Bonnell (Love?), married Nancy Bishop in 1968 and had a child Margaret.
Is this the same Bonnell who is the father of your son?
Bette

I don't have much, I'm afraid. In the diary of James Joseph Coachman he says, "On the 1st of November he left Georgetown, SC with his family consisting of wife, four children his nephew Hugh, Miss Church and fifty-five negros and arrived in Fowlstown on the sixth of December 1841." Fowlstown was then Decatur County. I'm sorry that he did not list the names of the negros and I don't think the original Bible exist - or if it does it is possibly in Brazil as the eldest son of James Joseph relocated there after the Civil War. Wish I could be of more help. If you can think of anything let me know I will keep an eye out for Rambo.

Re: Tilney Coachman's Wife Alice Yeamans

Mostly Coachman. I descend from John James Simons and Mary Lynch Coachman's son Henry James. I believe you and I corresponded some years ago. My previous married name was Erskine.

I really haven't done much research on Tilney and Alice but the other night I was reading various web sites and it just seemed obvious that there had to be a connection between her and Sir John. They were both part of the early settlers in Barbados. Sir John moved to South Carolina in 1671, Tilney and Alice followed in the late 1690s or early 1700s. Then I found a reference (RootsWeb WorldConnect - Jehan Dupot Descendents) that Gov. James Moore (who we know married one of Sir John's daughters) referred to Tilney as his brother-in-law in some document. I assume the reference is in his will but I haven't been able to find a copy of it.

Anyway, it certainly seems that there should be a connection. I'm not sure that their relative ages support that Alice was his daughter but, perhaps, she was his granddaughter. Of course, this is all mere speculation, just food for thought and research.

From what I've read, it would seem that Alice Yeamans who married Tilney Coachman 1 July 1689 in Barbados, West Indies is somehow related to Sir John Yeamans, also of Barbados and Governor of South Carolina. It seems that she should be his daughter or, perhaps, granddaughter. Does anyone have any proof of the connection?

Thank you in advance for ahy input.

Dear George,
I'm checking to see how you are progressing in your search.
