Hi Richard,
Somehow, I've lost my copy of your Aunt Anna's notes. If possible, could you email a copy to me? My email address: betsymetzger07@gmail.com.
Also, I discovered several other "trees" that have distant family ties. Margaret Collins married Nicholas Trainor of Ireland. He had a sister, Julia, who married William Flanagan and eventually then ended up in Marcus, Iowa. Kevin Flanagan has a family history on line and had all sorts of interesting information on my family! I even scored a picture of Julia. Hope you are well. Betsy

I am a Coates but I am not sure where my name comes from. The originator of this name is Willie Mae Coates but, she was born Willie Mae or May Robbs. She had a brother named Clover Robbs and one sister (i believe) named Rosie Lee Robbs. The only name that could be traced was Robbs. She was born in Dalton, georgia and her brother died in Chattanooga Tn. If you can shed some light, it would be appreciated.

Hi there,
I realize this is an old thread but hoping someone will see this. I am researching my fathers ancestry to help my daughter with a school project. We are trying to figure out when the Coates's first came to America. My father's great grandfather was Justus A. Coates who was born in 1830 and married a Margaret J. (Bailey). They are both buried in Oak Hill Cemetary in Merrimac WI. I believe his father's name was Harvey? This is as far as I got. Would love some more info! Please email or reply to this thread. chadandcarla@frontier.com

I think Margaret Collins married Michael Nicholas Trainor and lived in Strongsville, OH. He was a night watchman in Berea. They had several children, one of which was Mary Alice Trainor who married Carl William Sheekley of Cleveland. They had three sons, Carl W. (Jr.), John R. and Gilbert. Gil died young. Carl W. Jr. married Alice M. Ryan and had four girls, Mary A., (deceased 2009), Ann M. (deceased 2001), Elizabeth J. and Christine E. I am Elizabeth - or better known as Betsy.
There is a Thomas William Coats the father of Joseph Coats who had many sons two of which are John Willoughby Coates and Benjamin C Coates. thomas came from Tennessee and setled in Saline County MO where Joseph was born. The family later moved to LaFayette county. I believe Thomas and Joseph are burried in LaFayette County, MO. From there the family dispursed to different places. I am Benjamins great granddaughter from his daughter Mary then my father Marion.
Benjamin is my ggrandfather and is burried in Greenwood cemetery in Spokane, WA along with Ida Belle. His daughter Mary Louella was my grandmother. She is buried in Grandview Cemetery in Grandview, WA along with her second husband Winfield Elmer Greely. They had two children Paul Winfield and Marion Edward who was my father. Father passed away at hte age of 47 in 1979 and is buried in the Pines Cemetery in Spokane WA. Benjamin and Belle had three daughter from there marriage. Zelma R who married Alfred Shining, Hazel Clara who first married Elias Eliasen, they divorced an she later married Fay Alexander Bishop, and Mildred Genevieve who married Reinhold Renner. It is important to mention that Benjamin was married before Belle and Mary was from that marriage. I believe I have found the marriage record also in LaFayette County MO June of 1888. I need to find a divorce record to confirm. If you see this and want to e-mail me my e-mail is mary@melville.net

Born Nov. 4, 1926, in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Grant L. Coates Sr. and Helen (Voelker) Coates. A retired machinist at U.S. Steel's Research Center in Monroeville and a World War II veteran of the Navy, Grant was a member of the White Oak American Legion, a Versailles Borough fireman, a member of the River Rescue team, and a lifetime member of the NRA.
I need to make sure that I am responding to the same Robert L. Coates. He had a son Allen and was burried in Oakland in 1918. If this is the same on I am interested in what you might have on him. This Robert's headstone states that he was born in 1854. It could be the same one but I am not sure.
Regards

Coates of Walton-in-Gordano/Bristol

I've been researching the Coates family of Devon, who briefly settled in The Walton-in-Gordano/Walton Park area in the late 19th Century. William Coates appears in the 1881 census as a builder employing a number of men, together with his wife and children. Various family members also appear in Kelly's directories. I'm particularly intersted in any information regarding the property they lived in (The Grange, Walton Park), as I can find nothing. Any information about Walton-in-Gordano/Walton Park, 1880-1900 (the names seem to be used interchangeably) would also be of great interest. Also of course anyone with links to Coates in Somerset.

Just finally found my GG grandfather's parents. Thomas Ainsley COATES was my GG grandfather and was a son of William COATES and Sarah WOOD. I have been searching this for a long time and would love any info you are willing to share on his/my ancestors. The Coates family has long been one of my brick walls ... I will gladly share my line of descendents.

I have most of their descendants here in Canada but have no idea of his ancestry in England. His ggson,Peter Coates is travelling to England soon so maybe he can make the connection to John's ancestry.

Yes. I have the emmigrant to Canada as the starting point for my tree. John Coates (b 1819) in Yorkshire m Elizabeth Mortson (b 1825) in 1853 in Creemore Simcoe County Ontario Canada. They had 8 children that I know of, the first in 1859. I'm still working on some of those children.
Are we looking at the same Coates family? Len

Maud Ann Catharine Ollett had a child with someone with the last name Coates (or Cotes) in December 1915. Apparently the father died in WWI shortly after, but we don't know his first name. They were not married. The child's birth certificate says Peter Stuart Ollett, but many travel documents from when he was a kid say Peter Stuart Coates, or Peter Stuart Cotes. Does Maud Ann Catharine Ollett ring a bell for anyone on the Coates side? The child is my late grandfather, and we would like to know our Coates relatives!

Hello,

I am completely stuck. I am looking for the marriage of a Henry Harold Coates, born around 1930 I think in Louisiana and died around 1976 in the same state. He married Billye Lorraine Hopkins, I also believe of Louisiana (1930-1991/2). I can't seemed to find any record of this and I know for a fact that they were married. The only other info I have is that she is the daughter of Thomas L. and Geneva Bonner Hopkins and they (Billye and her parents) are buried at Chickasaw Cemetery, Summerville, La Salle Parish, Louisiana, USA. Billye was also married a second time to an Hebert (I'm not sure of his first name).

If you have any info concerning this line, I would greatly appreciate it. My email is lh1311@txstate.edu
