Thomas Cobbs BD 2/20/1738 - Wife Mary LNU

I would like to connect with direct descendants only of Thomas Cobbs, Sr. born 2/20/1738 in Goochland Va & Mary LNU born 4/17/1738, Virginia. I am continuing my research on their children:
1. Louis Cobbs BD 8/17/1760
2. Charles Cobbs BD 5/29/1762
3. Susanna Lodusky Cobbs 1/17/1765
4. John Cobbs 1/17/1765
5. Thomas Cobbs 12/25/1767
6.James Cobbs 10/8/1770
7.David Cobbs Bd 4/15/1773
8.Moses Cobbs BD 9/17/1775
9. Jesse Cobbs Bd 8/12/1779
11. William Tellis Cobbs BD 4/7/1783

I will exchange some documentation that I have from Family Bibles, and other research with direct desendants of this family.

After much research I do not take the position that this Thomas Cobbs who married Mary LNU is the "Old Tom" Cobbs (Thomas Addison) who married Mary Susannah Moon. The family Bible on (Our Thomas) says that his wife Mary was born 4/17/1738 & she died 11/19/1807. MARY SUSANNAH MOON the best I can tell, was born about 1738 also but she died 3/12/1772 in Buckingham Virginia. The Thomas that I am researching left a will that was probated 2/13/1826. ( I have a copy and it names his children). "Old Tom" also had a will and he did not die in 1826. I am only including this info so that can concentrate on the children I named above and their descendants not the line of Old Tom and Mary Susannah Moon.

If you are serious about these families contact me at fayecobbs@bellsouth.net.

Thanks,

faye
Re: looking for cobbs from VA from the 1700 1800

With each new day of research I find more information - though not the actual record/proof I need to link my John Cobb, born 1814 in Henry County, KY to his parents. John said his father was born in VA and we have no further information about his Cobb family.

That said, what I have is:

1.Two Cobb men, Thomas and Will/William are found in the IND 1820 Census living on the Bear family farm in Milton township along the Indian-Kentucky Creek east of Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. Neither Cobb man/family is shown in IND in the 1830 Census. From this 1820 census, we have concluded that the most logical 'father' of our Cobb children is William with 1 male under 10 and 3 females under 10 – John would be the male under 10, the females would be Mary and Hester with an unnamed sister. They had a brother named George who was probably born AFTER this census was enumerated. Two Cobb men are also found in the 1810 Census for Scott County KY; they could possibly the same two Cobbs?
Thomas Cobbs (the same one or a brother?) is shown in the 1840 Census again living on the Bear Family farm in Milton, Jefferson County, Illinois.

2. I was contacted in Feb 2011 about Hester (Bear/Barr/Bare/etc.) who the Bear family claims is my Cobb mama - she married a Cobb in KY and in 1815 the family moved to Milton, Jefferson County, IND. The Bear family has Hester a widow in 1825 and married to William Perry - he is gone from the family - died? by 1830s. Then we find Hester (Bear-etc spellings) (Cobb) (Perrie) Perry was living in Muscatine County Iowa in the census with a household consisting of George Cobb who is shown as 'other principal person.' At this same time, other Cobb siblings were living in Muscatine County IA – John, Mary and Hester and an unnamed sister. George is possibly the brother who John Cobb refers to when he 'went to IND to get his mother, two sisters and brother to take them to Muscatine County IA. Who is the other sister? We have not found her yet. Hester Bear/Cobb/Perry is now presumed to be the mother of our Cobb children though we have no records showing her name with any of our Cobb children except George and that in ONE INSTANCE.
3.John Cobb's sister, Hester Cobb married John Marble in Muscatine County, IA; she named her first child, Oliver Perry Marble. This naming of a Marble first child with the name of Perry has had Kathy and Margie scratching our heads and puzzling over 'Perry' as her child's middle name for many years as it appeared to us to have 'come out of the blue.' Now that we know about Hester Bear/Cobb/Perry, this is falling into place. Another question arises – why would Hester's mother leave Muscatine County IA at a crutial point in her life – she was very pregnant with her (possibly) second child – her first child may have died. We now know that Hester, the mother of our Cobb children, was 'called back to IND' to sign the Indenture papers that Jean (Bear descendant) found in Jefferson County IND Deed Book U, pp. 445-446 – Grantees. See Appendix (?).

I am hoping this added information will ring a bell with one of you for YOUR Cobb/Cobbs names in these elusive migrating families from PA/VA/WVA down the Ohio River to KY>IND>beyond.

Thanks.
I joined DAR through our Patriot, Robert Cobbs, and his daugher Elizabeth Ann (Cobbs) Mottley. I grew up in Lynchburg and remained there until I graduated from college. I now live out of the state, and I regret that I have not visited "Plain Dealing", but a first cousin from Oregon did so about ten years ago. He told me that the two graves of Robert and Ann G. Cobbs lie unmarked (what a shame!), and that they are the only ones buried at "Plain Dealing". I believe that Breckenridge Cox may have decided to use another of his given names, because I also could not find him. However, I found 57-yr-old Powhatan Cox, and his 16-yr-old son by the same name, living in Brookville, Campbell Co., VA on the 1920 Census.

Semer's line is not connected to the Joseph of Isle of Wight group. His descendants do match the Madison Co, AL group and it appears that they are descended from Nicolas of Isle of Wight Co, VA... who has been ASSUMED by some to be related to Joseph but DNA evidence shows otherwise.

Highly frustrating to know to which genetic line one belongs but not be able to find the connection.
Thanks.

Neither Thomas nor William Cobb/Cobbs owned land on either side of the Ohio River that we have found. There are some tax records but no land ownership records.

They were both living in IND on the Bär/Bear farm (John Bär/Bear)father of Hester purchased the land in 1812 - Hesterm married - probably - William Cobb but no marriage records have been found) in the 1820 census.

They were both gone from IND after 1822 and a Thomas Cobbs was back on the Bear farm in the 1840 census - and then gone again.

The biography of my John Cobb (1881 Napa/Lake County CA) says that his father went to ARK where he died.

One of my Cobb cousins donated his DNA for the Cobb DNA Project - we descend from Ambrose Cobb/Cobbs. Isn't Semer Cobb from the Isle of Wight Cobb's? That is what I was told.

Believe me, we have been checking ALL the Cobbs who migrated through this area.

Most of Ambrose's descendants migrated south and then west. Mike Cobb who is has been coordinating this DNA group has my Cobb family as the 'orphan' of the family as none of the families seem to have been missing two men named Cobb who were in KY or IND in 1820. Mike suggested I look at the Cobb families who were in VA and might have 'sailed' down the Ohio directly from what was to become WVA. That is what I have been focusing on lately.

I do appreciate your writing - every bit of info helps.

Margie
Perhaps it might help to find the land owned by the father on both sides of the Ohio.....

Also study all the Cobb families that went through IN and also had connections to AR... for instance the family of Semer Cobb. IF you have any living males with the Cobb surname from this line then the DNA project at Ancestry would be very helpful in figuring this out.
Sorry about that.

I just realized that my name and email didn't get added to that post.

My Thomas Cobbs who married Hester Bear (plus other spellings) were married in the early 1800s probably in Henry County, KY.

I have been trying to trace my Cobbs from VA to KY - our DNA shows we are descended from Ambrose Cobb/Cobbs, and we are trying to make the great leap from the 1600s to the 1800s when so many of these people were traveling around the country and not leaving records.

Again, I apologize - while hoping someone out there recognizes these names for us.

Margie Hinton
Mike, we just received a typewritten copy of information from William Tellis's father's bible which is on file at the Morgan County Archives in Decatur, Alabama this morning. We just learned today where the bible was on record and one of their researchers sent this to us today. This will confirm that his father, Thomas Cobbs was born 2/20/1738 and died 1/30/1826. This means the will we have that was proved in 1826 was his. We can also see that his wife's name was Mary LNU and her birthdate is 4/17/1738 and her death date is 11/19/1807.

Unfortunately we do not have places of birth and death for sure based on the Bible Record although the census show the family being born in Virginia.

Hope this helps. faye
THOMAS COBBS, SR BIBLE

BIRTHS

Thomas Cobbs, Sr. born Feb 20th 1738
Mary his wife born April 17th 1738
Mary Key, the daughter of William & Sarah Key, was born Oct 28th 1785

DEATHS

Mary Cobbs my wife died Nov 19th 1807
Thomas Cobbs died Jan 30th 1826
Wm.
Mike the e-mail address you gave me will not accept my e-mail to you so i am posting on Ancestry to you. In an effort to clear this up once and for all for people that are in this same family. We are 100% sure of his ancestors up through William Tellis Cobbs and Mary Key, his wife. We have believed up to now that William Tellis's father was a Thomas Cobbs, Born in Virginia in 1737 and died in Virginia 1826. We have a copy of that will and he is naming the same children that we show as siblings of William Tellis. We think he died in Virginia because the will was proved there. All we have for his wife is Mary - LNU. Those who maintain that he went to Georgia say that his wife was Mary Benning.

We show William Tellis's grandfather as Thomas Cobbs, Born 1720 in Virginia and died 1761 in Virginia with Sarah LNU as his wife. Those taking the Georgia position say that this was Col. Old Tom Cobbs who went to Georgia and was married to Susannah Moon. Would love to uncover some real facts. I have just run out of places to look. Thanks for any help you can give.

Also if you have another e-mail address that i might use, I would appreciate it.

thanks again.

Va..
Notes for William Tellis Cobbs:
We have done quite a bit of research to make some corrections on my Great, Great, Grandfather's records. On many trees that has been posted to the internet, he is shown as William Tandy Cobbs. This is incorrect. His middle name is Tellis. Records from the land office where he was granted land shows his middle name as "Tellis".	His will, signed by his own hand and filed in Prentiss Co. Miss. in 1870 reveal his middle name to be "Tellis".
There has been a lot of confusion about the date of his marriage to Mrs. Mary Key and speculation that he might have had a prior marriage. We hired an independent research in Richmond, Virginia to go to the State Archives Library in Richmond in Novermber of 2010 to check on this record. She sent us a copy and we will be including it in this book.
We believe the true date of marriage to be 12/22/1810.	Here are our findings:
1. You will note that the actual marriage records had some blanks that were not filled in and that the questionable
year of marriage was added in over the December 19 date. If you look carefully you will realize that the "tail on
the letter 'b" in December goes up to the "1810" "0" making some think that the marriage year was 1819. We
will carefully give you our other findings after examining this record.
2. Please note that the family of Mary Key is making a marriage Bond to Gov. John Tyler, the governor of the State
of Virginia. John Tyler Sr. was governor of Virginia from 1808 to 1811. (The 1810 marriage would fit in this time
frame. His son, John Tyler Jr. was governor from 1825 to 1827. ) If the marriage date of 1819 was the correct
one, the bond would have been to James Patton Preston, governor from 12/1/18816 to 12/1/ 1819 or if not him
to Thomas Mann Randolph Jr. who was governor from 12/1/1819 to 12/1/1822.
3. Mary Key would have been 34 years of age if the 1819 date was correct. Note that you have a consent to marry
form signed by her father, William Key and Witnessed by Charles Cobbs, John B. Cobbs and Robert Key. As in
most states during that time period the requirement for consent was 25 and under. Why would a 34 yr old
woman need this. Mary Key would have just turned 25 prior to the 1810 marriage. Notice the form states that
marriage is intended to take place shortly. It looks like they were making preparations and since some dates
are blank it is hard to know when consent was given.
HERE IS AN E-MAIL WE RECEIVED YESTERDAY FROM THE RESEARCHER AFTER SHE TOOK A SECOND LOOK AT IT IN THE RICHMOND, LIBRARY.
"Faye,
I looked at this record today at the Library of Virginia on a reader-printer which can greatly enlarge it. I also had another certified genealogist take a look at this for a second opinion. We decided that it does appear to be a zero and that would make it consistent with the name of the governor as to when he served. However, there is no way to explain away the date on the front of the bond except that it must have been written on it many years later- at least nine. I guess that it is possible that it was put
Page 7 of 12	Saturday, February 5, 2011 9:21:24 AM
+8.	iv.
William Thomas Cobbs was born 18 Dec 1818 in Campbell Co. Cobbs:
On the 1870 census in Prentiss Mississippi, William Tellis Cobb is 86 years old. His daughters Mary Cobbs, Susan A. Jackson and her two daughters. (Tellis's granddaughters) are living in the house with him. Mary Cobb apparently never married but remained in the home to care for her elderly father. After Susannah's husband passed she and her two daughters apparently lived in the father's home to help care for him. Sometime in August of 1870 William Tellis will pass away and the Will is filed. You will see where he leaves the home house and some land to Mary Emaline, Susannah and the two granddaughters.
x.
Thank you for your reply. I have searched the Cobbs Tree that I am working on for my husband and I do not have any of these names. I also recently purchased a book on the Cobbs/Cobb from a lady in Alabama. She actually is a distant relative to my husband and had included many "other Cobb/Cobbs) families that also came out of Virginia just like ours did. She did not have any of the names you have listed either. It amazes me how you will hit brick walls in every family.
I will keep your note and if i find anything I will contact you. Good luck.

faye

My Cobb/Cobbs family originated in VA - and I can only PROVE the family from John Cobb B 1814 in KY. The most probable names in the census at that time were Thomas and William who seemed to move together.

I need parents names for these Cobb/Cobbs 'children' - John (1814), Mary (abt 1815 in IND) and Hester (1816-1818 IND). John's biography says his father was a farmer who had farms on both sides of the Ohio River between 1814 and 1830 when he 'went to Arkansas where he died.'

Margie Hinton
My Great-great grandfather is Charles Lewis Cobbs b 1800 va. His son was Samuel Scott Cobbs how moved to Valparasio Indiana with family. Does anyone have any hard factual info on where Charles Lewis Cobbs & his wife Ann are buried? We are assuming he was with Ann Marie Scott when she died in 1855 around Indianapolis IN, but it goes cold for both of them after that. We just found where John Poindexter is buried if anyone interested.
Thanks,
Laurie Cobbs Miller

Hi Sheilah,

I came across your post while searching for information on my ggrandfather James Anderson Cobb or Cobbs. He was from the Lynchburg VA area and was born in 1844 to Pleasant Augustus Cobbs and Mary A. Wade Cobbs. They appear on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. We have been unable identify James' father, but I believe that it may be Augustus Cobbs. I would not be surprised if John Anderson Cobbs was Pleasant's brother. Since your 2003 posting, have you discovered anything more?

Liz Venuti

It is interesting that you mention Cobbs in Kanawha County, WV. The Cobbs family has connections to the RICE family back in Prince Edward and Amelia Counties, VA. In 1757 or thereabouts, Samuel Cobb / Cobbs of Amelia County gave a lifetime heir to his plantation in Prince Edward County, Virginia to Francis RICE and his wife (Sarah Womack Rice). We feel there is a definite kinship between Francis and the Cobb families, probably going back to the Warwick / York County area where both families lived.
Several descendants of Francis and Sarah Womack Rice settled in Kanawha County, WV from Charlotte County VA in the 1920's or early 30's: Alexander "Sandy" Rice and his family.

Hi Angie:

I was wondering - do you have a time frame for these Cobb people?

I am looking for parents of John, Hester and Mary Cobb (siblings born between 1810 and 1819/20). Research and published biographies (1880) do not give their parents names.

Census records state their unnamed Cobb family 'came from' Virginia (West Virginia might fall into this category at this time) and they migrated to Henry County, Kentucky where John was born in 1814, in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana where Mary was born about 1815 and Hester in 1819.

Thanks,

Margie Hinton (marhinton at earthlink dot net)
