Just thought I would clarify. Shirley is my older sister. James or Jimmy is my older brother then there is me and fulton is J.R leaving Johnny as the youngest. Yes, Shirley called Mattie yesterday after I called her with my new found information. I have 2 children Richard Cody Seaman and Cleo Madison Seaman Ricky is 21 and Cleo is 19. Are you active on facebook? I actually forgot Emma until you clarified that she was the one in Lewisburg. My memory is clear about the visits to her apt. I am not sure why Carrie's name is embedded in my memory. I have a very faint memory of a picnic in Auto.

I have basically no info. I do have a small picture of Grandma Manley. It was taken outdoors. She was sitting and there are lots of people or family members standing to each side and behind her. The only other pictures I have are of my grandfather. I have one of him in his uniform it is in a large oval frame. I would appreciate any pictures or info that you can share. I just visited this site the other night so I must learn to navigate it. I have 2 email accounts. I am going to give you the one that is used the least. My fuelco account is overwhelming with junk at times.

shadesbyjane@yahoo.com

Thank you so much for the information. I saw several sites for people who are trying to trace their native american r ooots have you tried any of those? Would you please share with me what steps you have taken to trace the cherokee heritage? Do you need any information from me? I will be more than happy to forward any info I find to you. I will be visiting the Cherokee reservation in Sept. I don't know if that will help me or not. Do you know why people believed grandmother Manley was cherokee? I would greatly appreciate the link to your family tree. This would assist tremendously in giving me a major jump start to my search. Perhaps a few of us can attend the next family reunion. I am very excited and so happy that I have made contact with you. Thank You so very much for taking the time to respond.

Sincerely,
Jane Seaman (Nannie)

John Cyrus Coff (son of Patrick Coff) married Manley Fair Darnell, daughter of Henderson Darnell. Carrie Belle, Mary Ann, Emma, Clyde, Andy, Mattie, Emma, Delbert and Murrell were their children. Emma was the one who lived in Lewisburg. Carrie (my grandmother) lived on a farm in Auto where her brothers and sisters visited. Mattie still lives at Auto and keeps in touch with Shirley and Lena Francis.

We have a Coff reunion each year, second Saturday in July, at a little park in Renick. Last year some of Uncle Murrell's family from New Jersey attended. Connie and Francis attended several of these reunions in the past. Harold and Margie have also attended.

I have pictures of great grandparents if you're interested. Grandma Manley certainly looked as if she could be part Cherokee but I have no documentation.

Lois McCutcheon

Mattie was at my house for dinner this evening and said she had talked to Shirley. Actually, I'm the one who does family history, not Berniece. Do you have a copy of our family history? Johnny Coff, Murrell's grandson, has a family tree online. If you can't access it I will try to send you a link to connect wit mine. Lena Francis and J.R. lived out the street from us a few years ago before J.R. got married and I met your other brother I think, but I don't remember his name being James. Only met him a time or two though. Oh wait, I just read your message again, I think it was John I met.

You probably remember Carrie because she lived on the farm and all her siblings tended to gather there. Aunt Emma lived in Keyser until her later years.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Do you have a picture of John Cyrus and Manley Fair Darnell Coff? If not, I'll need your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.

Thank you for responding. Lena Francis was my mother and Connie was my uncle. I could have Carrie and Emma confused I was very young. But Carrie stands out in my memory for some reason. No, I do not have anything to prove that Manly Coff was Cherokee. At least, not yet. My sister talked to Mattie and she said that Berniece does the family history and would have more information. I am going to try to talk to her to find out what I can. I was at work last night and I just googled "the Coff Family of Auto W.Va) and found these posts. I immediately recognized the name Carrie Gabbert and knew there had to be a connection. Ray, Harold, Connie, Lena, Margie, Mae and Dorothy are the names of Andy's children. There were others who did not live past childhood or died at birth. All of his children have passed except for Lena. My sister is Shirley and my brother's name is James Andy. My name is Nannie Jane. I also have two younger brothers Fulton and John. Thank you again for responding. I am so excited now to learn more. I have always wondered about my family history and the cherokee connection.

Hello Linda. My name is Jane Seaman. I live in Florida. My grandfather Andy Pete Coff had a sister Carrie Gabbert and a brother named Clyde. They were from Auto W.Va. There are still a lot of coff's livng there. I know very little to nothing about them. My granfather died in 1968 in the VA hospital in Beckley W.Va. My understanding is that his mother was Cherokee, full blooded Cherokee. I know it was a large family and these are the only three names I remember. My grandfather married Cleo Nannie Morrison and they had 14 children. But I can remember as a small child of approximately 8 years of age visiting Carrie Gabbert in Lewisburg. She lived in an apt above the Pharmacy. There is a church in Auto and all of the Coff's are buried there. The church is very small and very old. My grandparents and several of their children are buried there. Services for my grandmother was held there in 91. I remember that members of the Coff family sang. I don't remember a lot about those family members. I think there may be a connection and I can only hope you are still actively using this site. The Carrie Gabbert that I visited has a daughter that is currently living in W.Va and her name is Maddie or Mattie. I am just getting started so I have very little info. I am trying to find out the name of my great grandmother who would be cherokee and the mother of my grandfather, Clyde, and Carrie.I also know that the name Darnell is intertwined with the coff name as well.

Hello everyone1 Isn't the internet wonderful? Long lost relatives found through the internet is a wonderful thing. I hope I am just as luck here.

Going through some old notes that my mother had gotten before she died in 2000 there seems to be a relative in the Coff family Emma (b. 1840 I think) who married a Nelson Butler. This marriage resulted with at least one female child named Viola or Violia Butler who married Jessie T. Milligan. .

Now I have the family coming forward from Viola but looking for past relatives from Emma and back. Need more info on Emma herself if possible.

Now according to some notes here.. if I am understanding them.. the Male Coff (father of Emma, had gone to England to kidnap his wife.

If this rings any bells with anyone please contact me at gypsi323@aol.com.
Hi Linda. This is Lois, a distant cousin in WV. My grandmother, Carrie, was a sister to Murrell. I don't remember him but I do remember Aunt Mable when she used to visit my grandmother. You mentioned Murrell's children as being Harry, Martha, John, Florence and Mabel. Wasn't there also a daughter named Helen? It seems I remember Helen's daughter visiting my grandmother, also. I don't remember ever hearing Martha's name though, could Martha and Helen be the same person? I have hit a brick with with Patrick, Murrell's grandfather. Can't seem to go back to Ireland.

To Brian Robert COFF

Brian - great to hear from you. Our Walter thomas COFF came to Australia circa 1851 when gold was first discovered in Ballarat in the state of victoria. Prior to that he had been a coal miner in ? Liverpool where he was born circa late 1829 - early 1830. Still haven't found his baptism listing yet - just a matter of time and digging. Our Walter had 4 sons - Walter Robert, Thomas, Wiliam and John COFF. William died a baby but the other 3 boys were left fatherless when Walter thomas COFF was killed in a mining acident in 1862 - his wife died 2 years later, leaving the 3 boys orphans. John was also killed in a near-identical mining acident to that of his father in 1898, but the sons Walter Robert and Thomas COFF lived to a ripe old age. I'm keen to trace the COFF connection to the USA because we know there was one. I don't know who our Walter Thomas COFF's brothers, etc were, but since he named his first-born son Walter, its a fair bet that Walter was the family name, with Walter being the first-born son in each line. He possibly had brothers or uncles named thomas, william and John - that's the way they named their children in those days. During WW2 one of Walter COFF's nephews visited the family of Thomas COFF in Fremantle, Western Australia, indicating that the family had somehow re-newed the family acquaintances when the orphaned boys grew up. If we can trace WW2 COFF veterans we may begin to trace the USA - Australia connection at least. We know that one of Walter's brother's went to north America after first coming to Australia circa 1851 - but it's possible that he went there for 2 reasons - the California gold, and because the boys already had relatives there. Detective work will find the connection, so please keep in touch. I can be contacted smaiden@amitar.com.au Regards, Sandra

COFF family tree

To David M. COFF - David, have you tried getting birth, death or marriage records to trace your grandfather back - there are some good sites on the internet for USA families, including census and Social Security records. I have found a good many COFF names and addresses on the net through a White pages directory - so if you're interested in tracking down your relatives in the USA there are quite a few COFF persons to contact that may give you a lead. Would you like to contact me ? smaiden@amitar.com.au I'd like to help you in your search as I have done a fairly comprehensive COFF tree for our lot in Australia. Regards, Sandra

I am trying to locate COFF persons in the USA and Canada, also Liverpool region of UK for desc's of Walter COFF born Liverpool UK circa 1800 - his son Walter came to Australia and another went to the USA - would like to track him. Name may have been COFFIELD originally - several generations traced in Liverpol pre-1800 so not Irish it seems. ALL COFF enquiries welcome - one USA family stayed in touch with a West Australian family - son visited Fremantle, W.Australia during WW2 but families lost track afterwards.
