HAROLD B. COHEN, age 84, died on August 25, 1999, at his home in Beachwood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He was born on September 27, 1914, in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, the son of Morris Cohen and EVA DOROTHY BRENNER. Both parents were natives of Russia. Survived by his wife, Esther Yohai Cohen. Burial on August 25, 1999, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bedford Heights, Cuyahoga County, OH. Informant - Mrs. Cohen.

I have found a lot out about this family over the years. Thought I would share.

William "Will" Edward Cohen was born 3/27/1884 in Spartanburg County, SC to Zadoc Coan (his name was also spelled Zadok Coan, Zadoe Coan, Zadop Coan, Zade Coan, Zadoc Cowan, Zade Cowan, Zaddie Coan in census records) and Susan Ann Quinn (aka Susannah Quinn). Zadoc Coan was born about 1845 in SC ro ? Sherbert and John Coan (he married Mary Brooks after his first wife died).

Zade Coan died 12/15/1884 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, SC when a barn fell on him.

The History of a Brigade of South Carolinians
In response to a call from President Davis, about the 1st of July, 1861, a large number of infantry companies, from all quarters of South Carolina, rendevoused at Columbia, South Carolina. Here they were placed in a camp of instruction, at Lightwoodknot Springs, about five miles from Columbia, and allowed to arrange themselves in regiments of ten companies and elect field-officers. The second regiment so formed was numbered as the Thirteenth South Carolina volunteers, and elected the following officers;

After a period of about three months' instruction at Lightwoodknot Springs, it was ordered to the southern coast of South Carolina, it was ordered to the southern coast of South Carolina, near Pocotaligo, where it was brigaded with the Twelfth and Fourteenth regiments, as before stated.

"Zadoc Coan, a good, quiet citizen was working in an old stable on Mr. John Archer's farm near town Monday, when the house tumbled down and crushed him to death. He was buried Tuesday."

Right now I think that John Cowan was married to Zadok Sherbert's daughter and when she died (probably in childbirth because the baby is only 3 months old) he left the children with her father and sister-in-law and her children while he worked nearby. William Cowan is John's father.

At first I couldn't find a death certificate for Susan Ann Quinn Coan Fowler. But I found out she married for a 3rd time. According to her brother, Rev. James Wofford Quinn's (DOB 12/25/1854 in Fairfield County, SC; DOD 10/10/1936 in Cherokee Springs, Spartanburg County, SC) obituary, she was "Mrs. Susan Littlejohn". She was married to M. Littlejohn when she died.

Rev. James W. Quinn (this James W. Quinn was the brother of Susan Ann Quinn Coan Fowler Littlejohn) there is a grave site at Cannon's Camp Ground United Methodist Church. for Rev. James W. Quinn, born December 25, 1855 and dec'd Oct. 10, 1936. His obituary states that he lived in Cherokee Springs. He was not a member of Cannon's Camp Ground United Methodist Church and I cannot read the name of the church he belonged to. He was survived by his wife, Jane McAbee Quinn and children:

Will built their little house in Union, SC at 505A Hart Street.

They attended Unity United Methodist Church, 206 Hart St., Union, SC which was close to their house. Will worked at the mill that was just about across the street from their house. They celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary before Kate died. They had a big party and were in the newspaper. Will smoked unfiltered Camel cigarettes and was proud of it!

Will and Kate had 13 children:

1) Paul William Cohen, Sr. (DOB 2/14/1902 in Union County, SC; DOD 8/27/1981 in Newberry, Newberry County, SC ) married Ada Black (DOB About 1901 in ? ; DOD 1938 in Newberry, Newberry County, SC). Ada died soon after her last child of Tuberculosis. They had 4 children: Harry Lincoln Cohen married Jackie; Ethel Cohen married Stanley Jolly; Paul William Cohen, Jr. married Barbara Fowler; and Louise Cohen. He then married Lola Wilkins and had 3 more children. (names ?)

2) James Elbert Cohen (aka Ike Cohen, Ikie Cohen) (DOB 12/30/1903 in Union County, SC; DOD 5/5/1952 in Union County, SC) married Ethel Baldwin (DOB 7/29/1907 in Fairfield County, SC; DOD 1/23/2004 in Union County, SC). They had: Floyd Eugene Cohen, Azlee Cohen (she may be Hazel Cohen as I didn't find Azlee in later records), Herbert Ralph Cohen and Hazel Cohen. They are buried at Rosemont Cemetery, Union, Union County, SC.

3) John Gilbert Cohen (aka Jamison Gilbert Cohen, J.G. Cohen) (DOB 12/13/1906 in Union County, SC; DOD 6/15/1990 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC ) married Bertie India Hughes (DOB 5/23/1907 in SC; DOD 3/1/1992 in Davidson County, NC). They had Norma Carell Cohen Kinney.

4) Ela Ruth Cohen (died in infancy, DOB 1907 and DOD 1907. She is buried between her maternal grandparents, A. Silas Kelly and Leila Fowler Kelly in Rosemont Cemetery, Union, SC)

5) Earl Andrew Cohen (DOB 10/12/1909 in Union County, SC; DOD 11/1981 in Union County, SC) married Ruth Gregory (DOB 11/3/1919 in SC; DOD 11/17/2008 in Union, Union County, SC). They had one daughter that I know of: Cathey Cohen (Tally Corteville). He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran. They are buried at Rosemont Cemetery, Union, Union County, SC.

6) Mabel Louise Cohen (DOB 2/12/1912 in Union County, SC; DOD 6/14/1981 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, SC) married Clyde Harris (DOB 5/4/1909 in Union County, SC; DOD 10/11/1956 in Spartanburg County, SC) on 7/30/1930 in Union, Union County, SC. They had 4 children: William "Billy" Clyde Harris, Norma Dean Harris Hyatt, Margaret Lemond Harris Cantrell Rowe, and Carl Edward Harris, Sr. They are buried at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Union County, SC.

I am just finding the information you have posted and find it very interesting as I am currently copying some pictures from my husband's family. One of the pictures I have is of Sarah Janette Burdette (daughter of Lady Mary Wyndham Burdette and Andrew Pickens). I also have the book she wrote onboard a ship. To make this as short as possible, Sarah and husband gave birth to a Mary Ellen who married a gentleman whose last name was Walters. One of Mary Ellen's children was Rebecca who married William Thomas Haywood Humphreys. Rebecca and William are my husband's great grandparents. I have two pieces of furniture of hers that was part of her dowry when she left Virginia at the age of 16 to marry and move to Mississippi. I had a grandfather named Julius Hamilton. He was a jockey and of Hungarian descent. He was married (or so I believe) to Carolyn Lucas and they had two children, Barbara (my mother) and Gary. I am told he was abusive and an alcoholic. Carolyn left him at some point when their kids were in their late teens. In the late 1960's he reconnected with Carolyn and his adult children. At the time he lived in Miami where I met him on a few occasions. The reconnection was short lived and once again the family lost contact with him. I recall my mother talking about a career ending spill he took at Pimlico race track. But I know nothing else about him.

The ages and dates you site seem inline with when he may have left your family and started another with Carolyn. She was from Saratoga Springs, a horse racing town, which is likely how they met.

• "After lived well beyond the four-score mark, Julius Cohen, a retired merchant well known in this city, died Wednesday afternoon at 12:50 o'clock at the home of his son-in-law, Charley Hess, at 359 St. Francis street. Mr. Cohen's death followed a very brief illness. Funeral services will be held Friday morning ... and the burial will be in the Jewish cemetery.

"Julius Cohen was born in Alberweiler, Germany, October 9, 1828. In the sixth decade of the last century he came to America, landing at New Orleans, from which city he came to Mobile and proceeded to Quitman, Miss. ... In 1859 Mr. Cohen removed to Mobile ... and operated a dry goods store in Dauphin Street, near Jackson."

He "became a member of the Jewish congregation and of the Fidelia association, which later became the Fidelia club." In the War Between the States, he served in the home guard, particularly guarding the cotton warehouses.

I have a Samuel Cohen in my tree:

Born in Poland, probably Grodzisk in the 1880-1900 range or thereabouts.

His father was Yehoshua Menachem Mendel KATCHKE/KACSKO/COHEN. His mother was named Simma and she was his father's second wife.
He had a brother named Morris and a sister named Rose and half siblings named Louis, Benjamin, Abraham, Fannie and David.

I would dearly love information on this Cohen family if anyone happens to have any. I have some, but it's spotty and everyone seems to be researching different Cohen families, but I thought I'd put this out here, just in case.

Hi Elizabeth, there are about 4 descendants of Joel John Cohen corresponding with each other. Edward Daniel Cohen is often recorded just as Daniel Cohen. He sold clocks, wataches and mirrors in george st Sydney, and had an interesting role in the gold rush. His sister Rebecca Cohen was married to Joel John Cohen jeweller, and his brother Mosely Moss Cohen was also a jeweller- both in George st Sydney. Daniel arrived as a convict on teh Burrell in 1830. There is lots of info about him thru the nla trove website (searches old newspapers), and the Australian jewish Historical Society. I have items I would share with you but don't have your email.
