Colburn Coburn Cockburn Confusion

I have searched high and low for a connection between Colburn and Cockburn. When looking up Cockburn, Coburn is listed as one of the spellings (because of the pronunciation) yet when looking up Colburn I also get Coburn as an alternative spelling. However neither Colburn NOR Cockburn list the other as an alternative spelling.

I understand that there is a Colburn township near Catterick in Yorkshire AND that the Cockburns originated from the boarderlands of southern Scotland. I also understand that there are both Colburns AND Cockburns from Ireland (or immigrated thereto).

Looking the names up in several of those "House of Names" type of sites I find three different coat of arms.

Therefore, does anyone know if there is any real connection between Colburn and Cockburn and how/where it all happened? Where would I find the evidence?

I have no family to go to nor did any leave me information on my heritage and the origins of my name.

Thanks and cheers in advanced!

I recently purchased a photo of one Irene Amanda Colburn (Age 3 years, 6 months)that was taken by a professional photographer in Somersworth, New Hampshire. I found it in an antique shop in Maine. I have a hobby of trying to reunite family with photos that are at least 100 years old. In doing some research, I think she was the daughter of Albert and Ada (Kemmera?)Colburn, born in Sept. 1897. If she happens to be in your family tree, I would only want the cost of the photo, plus shipping to get her home. She was too cute to leave behind!

Descendants of Jedediah & Charlotte (Nash) Colburn - da. Harriet Johnson

I am descended from Jedediah through his daughter Harriet who married Benajah Johnson and moved to Michigan - this is found in the history of Edward Colburn. I had been searching for Benajah for 15 years and did not have Harriet's last name. Came across an entry in Libson, NY of a Jedediah Coluburn and a Benajah Johnson becoming guardians of two Johnson boys. Right now I can only remember the name Rueben. After searching for Jedediah and not finding anything I met a descendant of Harriet's son Levi Henry. Her family had Joluburn - but this led no where. I finally decided to try other spellings and finally tried Colburn which led the book on Edward and his descendants and found Jedediah. Still don't know what happened to Benajah, because Harriet and her children (above, and Edward Cooper [brother or son?], Martin [Sylvester?], Harriet Electa Herrick/Weldon, Fannie A. Gates, Marie A., and Charles Leroy) show up in an 1850 Census in Michigan without him, but I have a whole new lines to investigate! Would love to hear from any descendants of Jedediah. I am descended through Harriet and Benajah's daughter Cora Ingalls, my great great grandmother.

I am interested in learning about the Colburn's who settled in Jewell County, Kansas to see if they might be related to my line of Colburn's who settled in Rooks County, Kansas. They were descendants of John Revel Colburn who was a Methodist preacher in Andrew County, Missouri after 1840.

Thank you Linda and yes I could use what ever info you have on the Colburns. I dug up a picture of Rhoda (my gt gt grandmother),that belonged to my grandmother Florence Everitt with no date. My gram was born in 1905 and Rhoda looks like she is up there in age, so I am guessing the picture was taken about 1906-07, since my gram only looks to be about a yr or so old. It was taken I do know on their farm in Trumbull Co., Ohio. Would like as much info that I can get on this side of the family. Thank you again for replying and if you would like information on the Everitt side please let me know. Take care.. Char

Rhoda Colburn, from our family records was born 1 August 1836, born Ohio. Husband Edson Everett. Richard wrote to his sister Rhoda during service for the Union in the Civil War, according to the transcription of his civil war diary. Their parents, Francis Noble and Caroline, had a farm in Iowa next to Richard's.Francis N. and Caroline Colburn died in Iowa. Francis N. was the son of Paul Colburn of French Creek, Chautauqua Co., NY and Mary Grace Sina Colburn. Paul and Mary Grace are buried in Tefft Cemetery in Chautauqua County, New York. Let me know what else you would like to know. I do have birth and death dates for Francis, wife Caroline, his father Paul and wife Mary Grace as well as children's birthdates and Francis and Paul's marriage dates.
Linda Youngquist
