I see that the silver box was up for sale at Tenants Auction, Yorkshire, in July 2011. It was described as:
A Victorian Snuff Box, William Summers, London 1865, of rectangular form with incurved corners, engraved throughout with panels of leaves within strapwork, presentation inscribed .... to Bugle Major Caldwell By the Officers of the Leeds Rifles ... 10 Dec 1880, 7cm long, 3oz 15dwt.
The name is mis-spelt with an a instead of an o but that is a common mistake. Nicholas Coldwell was living in Leeds at the time and he was a Bugle Major so the box was definitly for him.
Re the photograph. It could be Nicholas Coldwell but I would like to know its provenance. Do you have any more details? I would appreciate a copy.

I think you are correct. He was a drum major in Leeds in 1861. He retired before 1871 so I guess the silver box is dated around that time. Can you tell the date from the silver mark?

FYI: Nathaniel H Coldwell is buried in the Routh Cemetery, Collin Co, TX. He died 7 May 1880 according to his tombstone. His wife, Nancy, died 2 May 1859 and is also buried at the Routh Cemetery. Nathaniel's daughter, Elizabeth, married John Routh and is also buried in the same cemetery as her parents.

There was another child for The Rev. William Coaldwell (
Immigrant) and Jane Jordan, one Jonathan Coldwell b. 1746 Fairfield, Connecticut - d. 1843 Gaspereau, Nova Scotia. Jonathan married Rosannah/Susanna Pyke. Jonathan & Rosannah had a daughter, Waittie\Waity Coldwell who married William O'Leary. Please advise if you require any more descendants. As for ancestors, I have only bare bones for Rev. William's mother, Mary Edwards, but his father, William Coldwell Jr. goes back into a very rich ancestry with over 10,005 names. The Rev. William supposedly is my 12th cousin 7 times removed.

Well, I had a few names already from Ken and was able to find some other researchers that listed Chares Coldwell, from England but I didn't know where in England. I finally found a Hockenberry researcher that looks very thorough as it has info that must be from death certs, etc. He listed Charles as born in Netherthong, Yorkshire, England. So I went on google and did search under Netherthong and Coldwell and your message with the 1841 and 1851 census showed up.
Would be interested in your pictures and other info and I just started this for my brother in law and don't have any documentation except from ancestry.com.
My brother in law was born in Altoona in 1946 and now lives in the Baltimore MD area.

I'm sure we have the same Charles Samuel Coldwell. Your William H is brother to my Laura Isabel 1873. I think I have a picture of your Charles 1897 and his brother Freeman as children. I have a pic of Charles 1844 and Emma, too.

Charles' obit says he was "born at Thong's Bridge, near Uderfield England, on Dec 14, 1844." That's a typo.. it's Huddersfield. Do you have the obit? His death cert says father Samuel Coldwell, mother Martha Wood. I went to England in 2004 and found Thongbridge, near Holmfirth. I got some English census/baptism booklets which you see posted in three messages here.

1841, Martha, 25 (prior to Charles' birth)
Sarah 50 and Joseph 56.

1851: Charles son age 12 (an age mistake I think)
Martha, daughter, age 36
Sarah Coldwell, head, widow age 60

1861: Charles son 20 unmarried
Martha daughter 45 unmarried
Sarah head 70 widow

Martha is unmarried again in 1871 and 1881. So what's up with that? Was she a Coldwell all along and never a Wood? There's no mention of Samuel anywhere. Her death cert says "daughter of Joseph Coldwell". Though I do find a Martha born to Joseph Wood in 1816 in the area. It's a mystery! I'm happy to share copies of what I have. My brother in law , Ken Coldwell born 1946 in Altoon PA, his father William born 1922, gparents Charles 1897-1978 and Olive Talbot b 1894, gggrandparents William H Coldwell 1870 and Mary C, gggrandparents Charles 1844 and Mary Emeline Hockenberry 1845.
I thought the Charles Coldwell born in 1844 was from England but found your info and think it matches. Do you know anything about this family?

Ebenezer married Sarah Price in 1769 at Bridgewater, Massachusetts. They had 6 children.

The Coldwell book states that they did have a son Ebenezer, born 1744 at or near Stoughton, Mass. He was a soldier of the Revolutionary army, and there is more info in the book on page 32. He remained in Mass. when his father went to Nova Scotia in 1758.

I'm related to the Coldwells through their son, Jonathan, too. But, while researching at the New England Genealogical Library in Boston, I found a listing of his marriage not to a Susannah, but to Rosannah Pyke in the town books. I'm related through their daughter Waittie. Would love any info you hv to share.

William and Jane had ten children as stated by someone else they are as follows:

I am a decendant of two of these lines John the I and Eliphalet.

yes they had a child named Ebenezer who ran away when they were moving to Nova Scotia. He stayed behind in the USA. more information can be found here.

As of my post I only know that Edward Caldwell 1820-1900 was Hettie (Sr.) husband and Hettie (jr.) father. 1880 Ga. census states that Edward was b. Ga. At Hettie's (jr) birth, 1875 they are in Chattahoochee Co. Georgia and Edward would be abt 45. I do not have the name of his father but it is stated that the father was from North Carolina and Edwards mother was from Georgia. Thanks jt

The variations in spelling of Coldwell (Colwell, Caldwell, Couldwell etc.) is common. It is particularly confusing because Colwell and Caldwell are surnames in their own right with different origins from Coldwell. See my web site www.coldwell-roots.co.uk

William N Carroll was my husbands great grand dad. We have the name COLWELL for Hettie in a family bible. However, we have seen it as coldwell, and caldwell. Father: Edward Caldwell and Mother Henrietta R H Caldwell. William and Hettie's children:

This is very interesting.
I was researching my family tree through my great,great grandfather Samuel Schofield and found that I am a decendant of William Coaldwell and Jane Jordan from Norfolk England.

Many of my relatives still live in Wolfville NS.

James was my Great-Grandmothers half brother ,he married my Great-Grandfathers sister Ada. James was son of Bowen and Annie Coldwell, born June 10,1884 --died May 19,1956. He is written here as..William James Coldwell.

I have the marriage of Frances M Coldwells to ALBERT Tegg registered Dec Qtr 1866 at Hackney London. Note name is Albert not George.

Stamford Hill is in the north of the London Borough of Hackney, near the border with Haringey and it is home to Europe's largest Hasidic Jewish community.

I cannot trace Albert Tegg in the 1841 and 1851 census returns however he is shown living with his brother George in 1861. Albert was aged 21 born Stamford Hill.

The census returns shows the parents of Frances as Joseph and Frances Coldwell (no "s" at the end of Coldwell except for 1861). I feel that the name Coldwells is a simple typing error for Coldwell which has been perpetuated. Joseph was a gardener and the family lived at Stanford lane, Hackney.

Hope that is of assistance.

Please let me have any Coldwell information (but not Tegg) you may have.

Trying to find any information about my ancestor, Nicholas Coldwell - born 1806 in Middlesex and died in 1882 in Leeds. He was a drum bugle major in the Coldstream Guards and was based in Windsor Castle. He married Elizabeth Hinkley. Cannot find any information on him before 1851 census.

I am looking for the family of Alfred Davis born 1813 TN. He moved with his family to Alabama and then around 1850 moved to Marion County Arkansas where he raised his family and died between 1861-69. John, the only info I have on John Campbell is what I posted. I am not connected to this family directly but it is a colateral line thur the Evans family from Caroline Co Va.
