Coles site @ myfamily

I started a new Coles site at myfamily.com 2 days ago, and am already getting responses. If you are a Coles and would like to share news, add pictures or makes comments, JUST to other Coles members, who may or may not be from your line of Coles, then let me know, and I can send you an invitation. There is no other way you can get to the site without being invited. There is no queries, but good fun, by putting in your family pictures and then comparing them with other family pictures to see if any of us look alike. There is also family trees, polls and stuff like that. Right now, it is my direct line there, so let me know if you would like an invite!!

Nancy COLE in 1850 Lincoln Co., TN age 54

I'm confused, and I'm hoping somebody can point me in the direction of resources/documentation that can straighten this out.

In 1850 Lincoln Co., TN, there is a Nancy COLES age 54 with children Joseph, John, Emaline, Anderson and Nancy in the household. Karen Walker has included a will by John COLE on her WorldConnect tree as follows:

Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee Will Records Book 1A, page 235
John Cole Last Will & Testament
I John Cole being in a low state of health but being in sound mind do make this my last will and testament.
1st I bequeath my soul to God who gave it
2nd I wish and desire that my debts be paid as soon a possible after my death out of any mony that may first come into my Administrators hands.
3rd I leave to my son William the colt that he now claims as his. Fourth I give to my son Joseph the colt that he claims.
5th I give to my daughter Emaline one heifer which she claims as hers.
6th I give to my daughter Nancy one heifer which she also calls hers.
7th I give to my beloved wife Nancy the entire use and control of my plantation to enable her to maintain herself and children during her natural life. I also give to her all my corn, bacon, --, horses, cattle and sheep, hogs and working tools, household and kitchen furniture. My intention is that she have the use & benefit of all my property except what has been heretofore mentioned provided for my request is that after the death of my wife my Administrators then shall proceed to sell all my real estate and the appurtenances thereon on such terms as the law directions and also such other property of mine as may be in her hands at her death. And the shall as soon as possible divide the proceeds equaly among any lawful heirs.
In Testamant whereof I do to this will set my hand and seal this 3 day of June 1844.

Test. John Coal SEAL
Josiah Norwood
Pinkny Pilant

So it's pretty clear the 1850 census is the household of John COLE'S survivors/heirs. My question comes in for the 1860 census for Lincoln Co., TN for Nancy:

1860 Dist. 13, Lincoln Co., TN Census [enum. 18 Jul 1860] page 104
Line 38, 771/741
Nancy Reeves 66 F 3000 600 Virginia (Column 13 marked = can't read or write)
Nancy Cole 30 F 700 400 Tenn
Henry Cole 7 M 150 400 Do (Tenn) (Column 12 marked = attended school within the year)

So my question is this... does anyone know if the 1860 census is Nancy (SWANNER) REEVES, daughter, Nancy (REEVES) COLE, wife of John COLE, and grandson Henry COLE? I haven't seen any of the COLE information accounting for this particular Henry COLE, though he's born the same time frame as the one put in
1860 Census Independence County, Arkansas, Household 352
Cole, John W. 30 Tennessee Farmer
Elizabeth 23 Tennessee
William H. 7 Tennessee
John W. 4 Tennessee
Jacob A. 3 Tennessee
George A. 10/12 Tennessee
Howard, George W. 18 Kentucky laborer
Susan E. 17 Tennessee

with the William H. being William Henry COLE.

I have John COLE m. Nancy REEVES 12 Jan 1852 in Lincoln Co., TN, and then nothing. I thought I'd found her in 1860, but now I'm utterly confused.

I would greatly appreciate any help sorting this out.

Coles - Penny - Evercreech
George Coles and his brother James emigrated from Somersetshire, England sometime early in the 19th century. George first settled at Greens Shore, now called St. Eleanor's, but soon moved to Milton. A few years later his brother James moved to Charlottetown. James was married to Sarah Tally and had a large family, among them the Hon. George Coles who was the first premier of the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
George received a conveyance of land in St. Eleanor's on 24 November 1812 but from the records he had a son born there in January of the same year. In 1814 this child was baptized in Milton.
It is assumed that George and James and their wives emigrated together but this is not certain. If so then they came between the summer of 1809 and 1810 for James was married in Evercreech, Somerset, England in May 1809 and his eldest child was born in Charlottetown in September of 1810. George and Margaret are said to have left behind them in England two children.
On his gravestone in St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Milton the spelling of his surname is COALS and for this reason several generations of his descendants did not recognize him as their forefather.

The story before Prince Edward Island
It had been suspected that George Coles and James Coles were the sons of George Coles and Catherine Penny. This suspicion came about purely by the fact that James Coles and his wife Sarah Tally called their second born son John Daniel Penny Coles and their first born son was George Coles, so the Penny name stuck out there and was worthy of researching in that direction.
A baptism for James Coles was finally found in Pylle, Somerset at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, he was baptized 29 Feb 1784 to George Coles and Catherine Penny. A baptism for George has not yet been found. George Coles and Catherine Penny were married at Saint Peter’s Church in Evercreech, Somerset on 8 Jun 1768. At the time of there marriage George was listed as being from the parish of Doulting, Somerset, and Catherine from the parish of Evercreech, Somerset. From this marriage the following children have been found baptized, 1. John, on 28 May 1774, at St. Peter and Paul Church, Shepton Mallet, Somerset 2. Stephen, on 14 June 1778, at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, Pylle, Somerset 3. William, on 7 May 1780, at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, Pylle, Somerset 4. and James as above 5. Issacher, on 20 Nov 1785, at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, Pylle, Somerset, he was buried 16 Dec 1786 in Evercreech, Somerset 6. Issacher, on 21 Mar 1788, at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, Pylle, Somerset, he was buried 15 Nov 1789 in Evercreech, Somerset.
George Coles, gravestone reads George Coals died November 12, 1846 aged 76 years Native of Summersetshire, England, this would have George born about 1770.
In conclusion, George Coles, where was he baptized, the records in the parishes of Evercreech, Pylle, Doulting, Shepton Mallet, Brewham, Nunney, East Pennard, Ditcheat have been searched, have the transcribers missed him, were the records illegible for that period in any of these records, is he hiding under a spelling issue? Parishes that are worthy of researching next could be Milton, Bruton, Pilton, Cranmore, Clevedon, Batcombe.
Are there any other persons researching this family? Are there any living descendants of any of these people who may be still in England? Who were Catherine Penny's parents?
My 3 times great grandfather was Joseph Coles, born In Frome in Somerset around 1796. One of his sons was Robert Coles born in Devon in 1840. One of his sons was my great grandfather, Levi George Coles the father of my grandfather George Henry Coles 1890 - 1973. My grandfather had 3 siblings. Lillian Sarah Coles, 1887 - ?, Robin Stanforth Coles 1892 - ?, & Gladys Coles 1898 - ? I am desperate to find any info about these people. I cannot find any info on them apart from their birthdates! They could have course have died in childbirth, or World War 1. I remember my father telling me before he died in 2003 that he thinks one of them could have emigrated to Canada in the early part of the 20th Century. Any info on these or any other members of this side of the Coles family would be gratefully received
Many, many thanks!

I am searching, unsuccessfully, for a christening of a Sarah COLES c.1780 in or around the Manningford areas in Wiltshire. I am assuming COLES was her maiden name, as neither of her two children baptised in Manningford Bruce in 1805 and 1807 had any father mentioned.

Unless she married before 1841 I cannot trace her in the census, so I assume she had died before this census.

If anyone has any ideas as to what family she may belong to please do let me know.

Regards

Unknown Coles discovered but what happened to her?

I recently discovered that my grandfather Thomas Christopher Coles(b. Aston,UK. 1898) had a sister Nelly Amy Coles (b. Aston,UK 1897) that no one in the family knew about. I first discovered her in the UK 1901 census as Amy N. Coles aged 4 and then I found her birth certificate stating her name as Nelly Amy Coles. But beyond that I know nothing about her and have not been able to identify a death certificate, if she died young, or a likely marriage certificate. The odd thing is none of my grandfathers 5 children know anything about her so I tend to favour the idea she died but I don't know. Anyone have any ideas?

Coles family from Portsea Hampshire area 1800's

Hello everyone, I am looking for information on the family of Charlotte Harriett Coles born 24 sept. 1807 and christened St. John parish Portsea, Hampshire. There seems to be some confusion over the date of her christening. Her parents were John Coles and Harriet Smith married Alverstoke april 28 1806. There appears to be a slim chance that she was born in Exeter but perhaps she was'nt too sure herself. I know she had a brother Thomas and sister Harriet. She married Joseph Hilliard Dec. 8 1823 in Stoke Cannon, Devon and at some point afterwards they moved to Gayton Northampton where they lived until they died. I am interested in possible naval connections to this story as they did not have their first child until over 6 years later in Gayton. Charlotte became a member of something known as the Scottish Military Nursing Service.
Regards, Tom Stevenson.

His father in the household is William.

Abigail is the daughter of Martha Jane Gaddy Smith Mattox and James Redden Mattox. He was taken in by Henry SHEPSTONE and Elizabeth COLE(S) SHEPSTONE in October 1885.

I am also seeking additional information (i.e., of their lives in ENGLAND)on Henry SHEPSTONE who was born 19 February 1840 in (Bristol?), England. He was the son of George SHEPSTONE and Charlotte /?/

Henry SHEPSTONE married Elizabeth Mary COLE(S) on 24 February 1861 in England. They allegedly had ten children. Henry SHEPSTONE died 22 February 1927 in Brighton, Kenosha County, Wisconsin.

Elizabeth COLE(S) SHEPSTONE, daughter of John COLE(S), was born 4 March 1836 in (Cheddar), Somersetshire, England and died 19 February 1913 in Brighton, Kenosha County, Wisconsin.

I would be deeply appreciative if anyone has any information that they would be willing to share.

Sincerely, Lisa lisadcentral-genealogy@yahoo.com

He had sisters Mary, Jane, Elizabeth Ann and brothers John and Walter. His mother was called Elizabeth (I don't know her maiden name) - she was born in Ilminster in 1807. I don't know Samuel's father's name. Has anyone any connections with this area?
Cheers
Lesley

Any Pearly Kings & Queens out there?

I am trying to trace my grandfather's relations and my great grandfather's parents. My grandfather was John Albert COLES (d.o.b. 16 April 1902, Hackney - d.o.d 24 July 1981, Hackney) who married Rose WALL (d.o.b. 1904 - d.o.d. 1999, Sussex) on the 30 Oct 1926 at St Michaels Church, London Fields, Hackney, London. Both William WALL and Emily COLES were present. (I'm assuming that William is my grandmother's brother and Emily my grandfather's sister). At the time of marriage my grandfather was living at 25 Pevey Terrace, Hackney Wick whilst my grandmother was residing at 26 Fortescue Avenue. Both of them were working : my grandfather as a Carman and my grandmother as a Cigar Maker. Later on, my grandfather worked as a Sawdust/Haulage contractor in Hackney. Frank COLES my great-grandfather was a boot worker. I don't have a lot of info on my great-grandmother except that her maiden name may have been HILL! My grandfather's brother/sisters are Frank, Charles, Emily, George, Alfred, Edith, Frederick and Alice and his children are Daphne TAYLOR nee COLES and John COLES. Daphne TAYLOR is my mother.

If you think you are connected to me in some way (you lucky thing!!) then please get in touch.

Justine
WW2 Veteran Walter R Coles

I am searching for a veteran of WW2 who served in the 561st Field Artillery Battalion of the US Army. He would have been born between 1903 and 1928.

The 561st FA Bn served in Europe starting with their landing on Utah Beach on June 30, 1944, and most of the unit left Europe from Le Harve, France in July, 1945. They barely avoided capture at the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944.

I have the following on Walter R Coles:
serial number 16040557
county/state at time of enlistment Edwards/IL
place of enlistment E St Louis, IL
date of enlistment 10/9/40
native state MT
birth year 1919

There were about 500 men in the battalion, and I started with a roster of the battalion that had been developed some years ago by living veterans at the time. I have first names, middles initials, and last names on most of the men. There are some with no middle initial and a few where all I've got is a last name.

I have the county/state of origin at the time of enlistment in the Army only if it is shown above. I do have all the data I can gather from the Social Security Death Index, the 1930 Census, the NARA AAD database, and the Registry page of the National World War 2 Memorial web site. In all of these sites, I usually get multiple listings for any name I enter, so that by itself doesn't always narrow my search to an individual.

I have many letters out to people based on the little information I do have for a growing number of the names on my roster. Addresses for those people were taken from Internet "White Pages."

My real interest is where are these men today? And in cases where the veteran is deceased, where are any descendants or family members?
Found laminated obituary for Martha Frost Coles, Glen Cove, Long Island

I found a laminated copy of the obituary for Martha Frost Coles of Glen Cove, Long Island, New York who died on Jan. 9, 1956 at the age of 92. It was published in the NY Herald-Tribune. According to the obituary, she was a direct descendant of the three Cole brothers, Nathanial, Robert and Daniel, who settled in Glen Cove in 1668 and were partners in developing the Musketa Cover Plantation. It also mentions that she was a life-time member of the Mktinecock (Quaker) Meeting of Glen Cove.

I'd be happy to forward this to a family member. Let me know if you are interested.

Vera Delia Coles obituary - Iowa

I found this obituary. I am not a relation.

"Vera Delia Coles, youngest daughter of James C. and Sarah Reliance Coles, was born at Riceville, Iowa, August 7, 1887, and died at midnight December 30, 1908, being 21 years, 4 months and 23 days of age.

Miss Coles attended school at Riceville, and graduated from the high school in 1906. She immediately began teaching in the schools in Mitchell county, and continued in this work until about six weeks ago, when she finished her term at Bailey and came home to be with her mother for a time.

About four weeks ago the disease which had been hanging about her for some time, brought her to her bed, and after some days the doctor pronounced it typhoid fever. She suffered four long weeks.

Miss Vera was baptized while an infant; the vows having been faithfully kept by godly parents, in 1897, at the age of ten, she confessed her Savior and united with the Methodist Episcopal church.

Vera leaves to mourn her death, a mother and one sister, Ava. The funeral services were held from the M.E. church Sunday afternoon."
