Colls from Cuba

My family name is Coll, an Irish name, but I was born in Cuba and emigrated to the US in 1997. My father and his father were also born in Cuba. Were there any possible immigrations of a Coll from Ireland to Cuba? I'm hoping to get some more names from my grandfather that I can research but if anyone has any information or knows of Irish-born Cuban immigrants (possible relatives?), that would be great.

I've just posted a reply to one of the descendants of Mad Dog Coll who posted a message some time ago.

I am almost certainly related to the dreadful Gweedore-born Irish gangster Vincent 'Mad Dog' Coll.

I belive my GGG Grandfather, Toal Coll, was either Vincent's grandfather or his great grandfather. This would mean that Vincent is either my first cousin "thrice removed" or my second cousin "twice removed".

A number of years ago, the following information about my ancestors was supplied to a member of my family by a well-respected Gweedore historian and genealogist, K. McBride.

THOMAS COLL: was my GGGG Grandfather, I believe he was born in the late 1700s and he lived in Derrybeg, Gweedore, County Donegal. He had seven sons as follows:

(1) TOAL COLL (Toal was my Great Great Great Grandfather);
(2) Thomas Coll (We understand he may have married Kate, but her maiden name is unknown);
(3) Maurice Coll;
(4) Daniel Coll;
(5) Denis Coll;
(6)&(7)there were 2 other sons (names unknown).

TOAL COLL (my GGG Grandfather):
Toal Coll married Bridget Boyle-Gallagher and he built their home at Bunbeg. Their children, who were born in the 1840s and/or 1850s were:

(1) Charles Coll (died in USA);
(2) Edward Coll (died in Australia);
(3) Toal Coll (died in the USA and known as Toal Og Coll) - was he Vincent Mad Dog's father or his grandfather?
(4) Daniel Coll (known as Doney);
(5) BRIDGET COLL (my great great grandmother, she married Charles McBride, who was the son of Charles McBride and Annabella 'Nappy' Duffy);
(7) Kate Coll (bapised possibly Catherine or Kathleen);
(8) Sheila Coll (her daughter was Annabella Coll Friel, her granddaughter was Sarah Boyle and her great grandson was the famous Scottish footballer Pat Crerand);
(9)Anne Coll (died in USA);
(10)Mary Coll;

I have no record of an Una in the above family. Another subscriber mentions that the above siblings (1)-(2) and (4)-(10) plus Una are the brothers and sisters of Vincent's GRANDFATHER, Toal.

My most important question is: are the above brothers/sisters of Vincent's grandfather or of his father? My guess is that they are the siblings of Vincent's father.

I've been carrying out some research on the Mad Dog...
I have obtained a parish record of Vincent's father's birth/baptism. Toole Coll (a probable spelling error) was born on 12 Feb 1868 in Bunbeg. Toole's father was also named Toole Coll and his mother named as Bridget Gallagher. My research shows that Toole and Tole are variants of Toal. Also Toaly and Tully seem to be nicknames.

Vincent was born in 1908 and his siblings were:
Charles b May 1 1903
Robert b Jun 25 1904
Peter b Mar 8 1907
Florence born circa 1893
Thomas born circa 1898
(All born in Gweedore, Co. Donegal, Ireland except Florence who, interestingly, was born in the USA)

Any further information would be greatly appreciated. I shall be pleased to provide all Gweedore Coll descendants with further information too. I intend to buy or borrow a copy of the book 'Mad Dog Coll: an Irish Gangster' by B. Delap. I have contacted the publisher and unfortunately the book is out of print. However, they have copies at certain UK lending libraries and at many Irish libraries.

Kind regards
Michael McBride
United Kingdom

PS I'm an Englishman of Irish descent but I actually lived with my Irish wife not far from Gweedore in the 1980s. It seems that my irish cousins may have been very keeping quiet about our link to the infamous mobster and hitman! My mother's parents came from Dore, near Bunbeg in Gweedore. Thet coastal area is beautiful and the people lovely. Honest!

Thank you again! The town name info is especially helpful. We had gotten some information from obituaries about towns where people were from, but, without knowing too much about the little towns in that part of Ireland, it was always a struggle to determine if a record might be meaningful or not. We had used the Donegal Genealogy website before, but without knowing what town belonged to what parish or district, it was a bit overwhelming. Add to the fact that everyone was named the same thing, and it's been interesting!

I really do appreciate your help. I had been working on our genealogy for awhile, but when my sister got engaged, I decided I wanted to make a family tree scrapbook for her as part of her wedding present. It's been great to connect with so many people who can help provide the details about where we came from so I can make it a meaningful and interesting gift.

You are very welcome. I have family in this area, so was familiar such local records as exist. However, not all local records are online and they are limited pre 1900, so it can be a struggle to unearth relevant items.
Also and in case you are doing any further research, I should have clarified some of the names of the locations noted. The area is generally known as the Fanad peninsula or simply Fanad. Fanad is pretty much the same area as is covered by the Parish of Clondavaddog, so any relevant church records (baptisms etc) are listed under Clondavaddog.
The nearest town in which civil records are filed was Milford (also spelt Millford). There is an overlap between Millford and Clondavaddog records as they both record the same events.
You will also find several variations in spellings of the actual townlands, so be prepared to try several variant spellings while researching.
Some of the records I mentioned are online on the Donegal Genealogy Resources website. Others are on a range of other websites which list some Irish family records.
The Donegal Genealogy Resources website also has a list of pupils 1870-1914 for Ballymichael School which was the local primary school at the time. It appears to have some records which are relevant to your search.

Oh my goodness! This is amazing! I had been searching for info on them but felt like I had reached a dead end. I really appreciate this information. I'm going to continue on searching to see if I can connect Mary, Nellie, and Grace. Dorah Coll's info came from another Ancestry tree that matched with mine, but I've never been able to tell where she got that info. This helps me put all the pieces together and gives me hope that I'll keep finding new info. It's just a piece by piece process, I guess. This is really great info. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

There are baptism records for Clondavaddog Parish listing children born to Charles Martin and Dorothy Coll as Patrick (1869) Bridget (1875), Catherine(1877) and Michael(1889). Charles and Dorothy are noted as living in the townlands of Ballynacrick on 2 of these records and in Ballynalossit in another.
I'm fairly certain that Dorothy is your Dorah as both Dorothy and Dora are very uncommon names in Donegal. There is also a separate birth (as opposed to baptism) record for Bridget being born in 1875 to Charles Martin and Dora Coll, so I suspect that that confirms Dorothy / Dora /Dorah as one and the same person.
Ballinacrick and Ballynalosit are townlands which are side-by-side about 5 miles north of Portsalon, near Fanad Head. Ballynalossit is now known as Ballinaloist.
There is also a record for the marriage of a Dora Coll and Charles Martin on 6 February 1868 in Millford Registration District (which included Clondavaddog Parish). The record gives Dora's father as Michael Coll and Charles' as Patrick Martin.
I cannot find any record for births/baptisms of Nellie, Mary and Grace but I don't necessarily have access to all relevant records.
The only partial census type record pre 1901 for Ireland is Griffiths Primary Valuation which lists heads of Families on a townland by townland basis. It was compiled about 1858 in Clondavaddog and list one Coll family (headed by a Charles Coll) in Ballinacrick and 7 Martin families in Ballinaloist at that time - though none headed by a Patrick Martin.
On balance, I'd be fairly confident that Charles and Dora/Dorah/Dorothy were from the Ballinaloist/Ballinacrick area. There are still Martin families living in Ballinaloist at present. Coll is also still a fairly common surname in the area.
I hope this helps.

Hello -

I'm looking to see if anyone has any information on Dorah Coll who married Charles Martin in County Donegal Ireland around 1870. Dorah died before 1899, when Charles immigrated to the US, specifically to Philadelphia. They had three daughters that I know of: Nellie, Mary, and Grace. Mary is my great-great-grandmother, and to the best of my knowledge was born in Portsalon, Fanad, County Donegal, so I would expect to find Dorah and Charles there around 1871.

Thanks!

Hi my grandfather John Francis Coll born 1839 was transported as a convict to Australia in about 1857-60. He worked his time out on the inland telegraph & then worked in the goldfields in Victoria. Then came to NZ to the West Coast SI & settled & raised 11 Children. My father said he had a brother named Owen who was a sponser at the baptism of John`s eldest girl Mary born in 1877. Could this be the ones you are looking for??
Regards
Mike Coll

Hi I am looking for info about my grandfather John Francis Coll born 29/05/1839 in Cork Donegal. He was transported to Australia as a convict about 1857-9 & worked on the telegraph line in central Australia for 2 yrs then as a free man went to Victoria & worked in the gold fields. He then came over to NZ in the 1860`s to work in the goldfields on the West Coast SI where he married & raised 10 children who are scattered through out NZ. There is a large family living in Greymouth with about 100 decendants??
A distant cousin Hugh Coll came to the same area about the same time but little is known about him maybe he is the one you mention.
I would be grateful for any info you may have.
Regards
Michael Coll

Hi Joy, my Hotmail account was compromised, so if you see an email saying "Help, i've been robbed in Wales with my fam" that is not me. Im here in the Bronx still (but Wales sounds nicer). It is a good thing I thought of contacted you through Rootsweb. I have your email address but I am going to wait to see if I can get back my Hotmail account. I have alot of emails I kept on there (some with photos) which I did not download to my computer (Im an idiot not thinking I can be hacked, still cant figure out how it happened). So for now I will contact you by this message board. I will let you know when the mircofilm comes in (from the NYC library), my last email to you was in regards to Joe Boyle in McAdoo whose father was a Michael Boyle who was born in 1874. That is bizzare, that his father was that much older than his mother. Well, the email (which I cant access now, but luckily I sent it to you) was dated in 2005, but I dont know if he is still around. He said he didnt know his grandparents names on that side, but he never got back to me. He left his phone# on there. I didnt know if you wanted to ask him anything. Ps I went to St Patricks cemetery & St Gabriels with my mother on Sunday. I just wanted to find them , but I will eventualy go to the church itself to see if I can read the records. What is amazing is that while driving through St Gabriels I saw Dorothy Kelly Walters grave. She is buried with her husband and his family. I was looking for Hugh & Catherine Boyle's, but I guess they were not near them. If you get to talk to you older relatives if you could ask if they know where they are buried (Hugh & Catherine) it would narrow it down. Remember, if you respond to this message it will go to my hotmail acccount (which was hacked), So you can send a private message to my AOL account, it is policiaboy@aol.com. I did not use it much, but I guess I will have to use it now until I get the other one straigtened out.

Jason

Yes, Hannah Monica Kelly was my grandmother. She married James Francis Coll. Aunt Dora married Jack Walters, as you noted, and she had several brothers and sisters. I would be happy to share info and photos with you. Please contact me via email at jacoll1118@aol.com (that's J A Coll eleven eighteen) and let me know your email address and we can exchange info. I would enjoy hearing your connection. You are welcome to look at my family tree (Coll and Morrissey) and copy what you'd like to have, also. All the best... Joy Coll

Hello, the Hannah Kelly I have had a sisters named Dora & Mary, and brothers William & Hugh. I think there was another sister named Catherine. The mother of these children was Catherin (unknown last name) and father was Charles F Kelly to my knowledge. I know he died before 1920, and Dora married a Walters and lived on Broad st in Hazleton (my grandmother showed it to me 3 years ago before she passed away at the age of 91). Her name was Kathryn Breslin Bahrt, her father was Hugh Breslin, son of Neil Breslin & Jane Boyle, and her mother was Mary Mooney, daughter of John Mooney and Anne Boyle (not related to the other grandmother).
I know we are related to your family, but dont know from what side. My grandmother mentioned the Coll family, Beishline, Gaffney, and Kelly from McAdoo. She said Dora Kelly was a cousin, but from Dora's mother or father? I was wondering if you know who Hannah & Dora's mother's maiden name was, or of their grandparents names. I am leaning more toward the Boyle side since Catherine was born in PA, and Jane Boyle was born in Pa as well. John Mooney, Neil Breslin and Anne Boyle were born in Ireland. I would like to connect the family trees . Hope to hear from you.

Jason Bahrt

Hello, I was searching the message boards in regards to the Kelly (Kelley) family from McAdoo and you listed a Hannah Kelly Coll.
My grandmother used to talk about being related to the Colls, and she said that her father or mother had a cousin in McAdoo named Dora (Dorothy) Kelly who married a John Walters who lived in Hazleton (1930 Census). I find Dorothy with her sister Hannah in the 1890 census in Mcadoo living with brother William, sister Mary and parents Catherine & John F. Kelly. This is the only Hannah Kelly I can find in Mcadoo. Are you related to this family? I have many questions.
