Morris Webster Collar was my great-great grandfather. I have quite a bit of information on them. Lucius and Susan owned a hotel in Hortonville, WI. Lucius is a prominent name in the family so you will no doubt run across at least 3 different family members with the name.

Brian,

I haven't done any Collar research in a while so I may not be up to date on the latest. I would gladly start the research again if I had a new clue! To date I am still thinking that Alanson belongs as a grandson of Norris Collar who served in the Rev. War and resided in Dutchess Co, NY. I did extensive research on the side lines, etc. and in many instances I was led back to that theory.

Please know I'm always interested and would love to help if I can.

Terry

Their parents were George Collar and Mary Ann Clark. If anyone is interested, I have them listed in Family trees here on rootsweb, so you can search and find more on them.

Hi Doug!

I do not have anything on Joshua Collar Born in 1792 RI but I am interested and do you have a place in RI?

Alanson Collar's (wife Sophia) daughter Electa married 2nd Elisha Field and his father Charles was born in RI. A Collar tie to a RI line sure seems possible but I never researched the Collar line in RI.

I haven's done any Collar research in a long time but I'm interested!

Terry

I am searching for the parents of Chas. D., along with some relatives who have searched for these people for 10 years. They are all from the Sugar Creek, Pa. area, which is not far from Genessee, NY.

I am looking for any relatives of the Collars. Joseph and Sarah had four children - Laura, John, Alice (m. Gilbert Collins) and Myron (m. Grace Inez Lowry). I am hoping that relatives may have pictures of the family...and of Sarah's parents who would be John Benham Hobbs and Emily (Hasty) Hobbs. Sarah was the eldest daughter and took care of her mother until Emily's death in 1905. Sarah's father also passed away in 1905. The family lived mostly in Iowa...but were also in Kansas...and Sarah lived with Alice in Nebraska for a time too. Any relatives out there please speak up!! I would love to find pictures...THANK YOU

Stephen, John & John, Jr. Coller (aka Collar, Collier, Colyer, Collyer) of Connecticut

After a lot of digging, I've pieced together the following Coller/Colyer/Collyer/Collier family:

STEPHEN COLLER/COLYER 1
b. 1710-1730
d. late Oct/early Nov 1804, New Hartford, Ct
m. before 1759 to Sarah _____
children:
Hannah, b 15 Nov 1759, New Hartford, Ct (no further info)
John, b. 15 Feb 1763, New Hartford, Ct

Stephen bought land in New Hartford in 1760 from William Lurvey. In 1773, he sold land to William Walling. In 1780, he bought land on which he is already living from Sarah Cowles, not for cash, but for 12 bushels of corn & 1 peck of wheat. He sold land to Stephen Fox in 1785. Stephen appeared only on the 1800 census in New Hartford.

Stephen lived in close proximity to Oliver Collar & Oliver Jr., and their known in-laws (Walling & Fox families)and had land transactions with those in-laws. Oliver Sr & Jr moved to Fairfield, Vt by 1810. Oliver Sr. was married in New Hartford & was a contemporary of Stephen. Do not know origins of either Stephen or Oliver or if they were actual relatives.

Other Collar/Coller/Colyers appear in New Hartford, Burlington and Bristol & could be related:

Roxanna Coller, b. 1782, New Hartford, m ~1806 to Richard Stevens, as his 2nd wife (per Stevens Genealogy). They lived in New Marlborough, Mass. Roxanna apparently died 1823-1827, sometime after the birth of her fourth child and her husband's 3rd marriage.

William Coller bought land in New Hartford in 1787 from Levi Fox, and in 1788 from Joel Parks. In 1789, some of William's land was confiscated to pay a judgement to John Camp, "late of Stephentown, NY." William sold land in 1796 to Amasa & Lerah Hinman.

The 1790 census broke out only a few towns in Litchfield County. The rest were combined under the heading "Litchfield." Therefore, the following could all be within New Hartford; they are also listed in close proximity on the original document (listing: Oliver Coller, John Coller, Isaac Coller.

Sally Coller m. 1792, New Hartford to William Calloway of Sandisfield, Mass.

Nathan Coller bought land from Levi Fox in 1794. He sold this land in 1795 to Oliver Collar.

"Roslin" Collar lived in Bristol per 1800 census. Probably the same person as Reuben, below:

Reuben Collar lived in Burlington per 1810 census (note Burlington spun off of Bristol in 1806).

JOHN COLYER 2 (Stephen1)
b. 1763, New Hartford, Ct
d. 15 Oct 1828, Burlington, Ct
m. 27 Aug 1787, New Hartford, Ct to Sophia Hills
no further info found on Sophia Hills
John served in Revolution & was pensioned
John bought land in New Hartford in 1781 from Stephen Pitkin. He sold land in 1785 to Levi Fox.

children:
John Colyer, Jr.,
b. 1790-1795; d. prob. before 1830

Caroline M. Colyer
b. ~1805; d. ?
m. 16 Nov 1825 George Pattison, Burlington, Ct
purchased land in Burlington, 17 Mar 1828, from John Colyer (could be her father or brother)

Catherine Maria Colyer
b. ~1807; d. 21 May 1827, Burlington; unmarried.

Sophia Colyer
b. ~1811
d. between 1860-1879, Pottawattomie, Iowa
m. Edmund Andrus or Andrews
Lived in Conn until 1840; lived in Illinois until 1853; bought land in Iowa in 1855. Ten children.

Elizabeth Colyer (possible dau)
b. ~1789; d. betwen 1850-1860, Mercer Co., Penn
m. 21 Dec 1813, Burlington, Ct to Orrin Belden
Lived in Burlington per 1830 census; by 1840, in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. By 1850, Mercer Co., Penn. Three children.

Eliza Colyer "of Burlington"(possible dau)
b. ~1800-1808; d. ?
m. 25 Sept 1826, Torrington, Ct to Nathan Cobb
no further info.

Benjamin Colyer (possible son)
b. ~1794; d. ?
m. ~1815-1820 to ?
Lived in Burlington per 1820 census; no further info

JOHN COLLYER, JR. 3(John2, Stephen1)
b. 1790-1795; d. prob. before 1830
m. March or April 1815, at Canton, to Miss Mehitable Butler of New Hartford. Mehitable prob dau of Ezra Butler and his wife, also named Mehitable.
Bought land in Dec 1820 in Burlington from Theodore Pettibone, Jr. and Jacob Foote. In Burlington per 1820 census and 1822 tax record. Bought more land in Burlington in 1822 from Elias Wooding. The 1830 census shows wife Mehitable Colyer as head of household in Derby, Ct with her 3 children plus another adult female and 2 boys (likely Mehitable's widowed sister[Harriet Ford] & her sons).

children:
Emily, b. ~1816; d. after 1880
m. 25 Jan 1835 in Derby to Jeremiah Lord of E. Windsor
Lived in Wallingford per 1840 census; by 1850 in Xenia, Greene Co., Ohio, then 1860-1880 in Vermilion Co., Illinois.
Six children.

Ezra B. Colyer
b. Nov 1818, Bristol, Ct (place per death record)
d. 30 Oct 1896, New Haven, Ct
m. 30 April 1854,Glastonbury, Ct to Mary E. Johnson
In Dec 1837, he was issued Seaman's Protection Certificate, stating he was b. Burlington, Ct, age 21. Note that Burlington was spun off of parent town of Bristol in 1806.
Lived in New Haven remainder of life. Listed in city directories and census records there. Was a locksmith. Four children.

EDWIN W. COLYER 4 (John3, John2, Stephen1)
b. ~1821/22, possibly in Wallingford (per death record)
d. 14 May 1897, New Haven, Ct
m. 3 Oct 1842, Wallingford, Ct to Maria French. Both "of Wallingford," per original record.
Lived in Westville section of New Haven, 1849-1851, per kid's birth records and 1850 census. Bought land in Woodbridge (adjacent to Westville section of New Haven) in 1852. However, by 1861-1863, he was boarding with Ezra in New Haven, proper. Appears in New Haven City Directory by 1866 and remains in New Haven for life. Eight children.

Can anyone shed any light on Stephen Coller/Collar/Colyer and his origins - or those of Oliver, his possible relative - or relationship to any other Collyers listed? Many thanks!

Could you send me your family information so that I can update my records? I love to have complete sets of data as you never know where it will lead. Like you finding me 3 years after a posting.

Did you also know their daughter Michelle? She has accomplished a lot. My husband and I helped her start college at the age of 35. She completed her degree and is now a school teacher in Wheatland, MO. She loves living in a rural town and Darrell, her husband, is great to her. They have two children: Lindsey who graduated from high school last year and Heather who is 6 years younger.

Re: Collar Family Genealogy

Hi Brian!

First let me tell you that there are several COLLAR genealogist who have been searching for years for the parents of Alanson Collar born circa 1802 in Dutchess Co., NY and married Sophia ____. To my knowledge no one knows the answer. I have volumes of data of the Collar, Coller, Collier, Etc. families and the MA, CT, NY, etc. data is massive. They moved so much and had similar first names, etc.

We think that Alanson may be the grandson of Norris Coller who lived for a while in Ct and then Pawling, Dutchess, NY and eventually he moved to Butternuts, Otsego, NY where he died. He is the person who served in the Revolutionary War and I have those records. He had many children and much can be found about him in the Settlers of Beekman Patent series under Collar families. I have volumes of data for Norris and many of his children and their families.

Thank you for sending your line. It is sketchy so let me tell you how I intepret what you send against my records and please correct me if I have any wrong data that you can add to or correct.

1. Alanson Collar born abt 1802 and death date is unknown. He was not found on the 1860 census for Howard, Steuben, NY where he resided for many years. He married Sophia _____born 30 Sep 1791 in MA.(This would be your gt gt grandfather.) Their children:
a. Warren Collar (1821-1900) married Betsy____ and Helen A Pratt.
b. Lucius Collar (your direct line) (1824-1875) Lucius was born in Solon, Cortland, NY and died 4 Nov 1848 in Hortonia, Outagamie, WI. He married Susan Mantor about 1848/1849. (This is your gt grandfather.)
c. Electa Collar (my direct line) born 12 Jan 1826 in Cortland Co., NY and died 27 Jul 1887 in Allegan Co., MI. She married _____Hooper and had twin boys, Alanson and Rensslaer Hooper. She married Elisha Field and I have much more on this line. Electa (Collar) Field was my gt gt grandmother thru her daughter Adelle (Field) Newcombe.
d.Rachel Collar (1828-1875) born Chenango Co., NY. She married Henry Dennis Gurnsey about 1850. I have more on this family.
e. Lucena Collar (1830-1832) buried in same cemetery as her mother Sophia in Fremont, Steuben, NY. I have a little more on that family.
f. Lucinda Collar (abt 1831-1850) Married Nelson Miller and lived in Lima, Livingston, NY
(note: There may have been other children of Alanson and Sophia not yet discoverec)

Your line, Lucius Collar and Susan Mantor I have the following children:
a. Dyton Alanson (1851-1932) born in Howard, Steuben, NY and died in Hortonville, Outagamie, WI. Married Anna Smith in 1872
b. Morris Webb Collar (abt 1852-after 1900) Born in WI. Married Mary Matilde Nordman in 1892 in Hortonville. WI.
c. Lucius Adelbert Collar (abt. 1854- aft 1932. Born in WI and married in Hortonville. Married Mary ____circa 1884/1886
d. Charles W Collar (abt 1856-bef 1910) Born WI and probably died in Outtagamie Co., WI. Married Martha____.
e. Susan Adelle Collar (abt 1856-aft 1932) Born WI and later of Appleton, Outagamie, WI. Married ____Greulich.
f. Stephen A Douglas Collar (abt 1859- )Born WI.
g. Barnum T Collar (abt 1860-aft 1932) Born WI and died - Of Hortonville, WI.
h. Jennie P Collar - no other data.

As you can see at this point, I have no record of a child Harold for Lucius and Susan. Harold is your grandfather. Can you give me anymore data about him? I would apprciate anything you might be willing to share.

I have all my data that is about Alanson and his descendants entered in my PAF Computer software program. I can print it for you and will need your snail mail address. I am age 70+ and grateful for the little bit I can do on the computer. I don't know how to sent the mateial by computer.

My address is:
Terry L Donovan (Mrs. Wm G.)
3535 Linda Vista Dr. Spc. 159
San Marcos, CA 92078

You asked where to find my info on the Ancestry site. My trees are the Carroll Alden Lundgren and the Ruth Eileen Chambers lines. There is so my more data I have that I can't possibly enter in the Ancestry.com site.

I look forward to hearing from you and wish you would contact me directly by using my email address. Thanks and happy hunting.

Terry

Email me, and I will send directions to the Cemetery, if it would be helpful.

Lugina
daughter of
Hanson & Sophia
Collar
Died Mar. 5, 1832
Aged 1 year, 9 mos

You probably already have found this out, but am adding it for anyone else who has the same question. Sally's daughter, Mary "Polly" married Roswell Davis in 1834. In 1850, Sally was living with her daughter & son-in-law in Gouverneur, Saint Lawrence, New York. Sally died 14 Jul 1858. Polly & husband moved to Wisconsin, where they spent their remaining days.

There's an article about Fanny in the Ford Times, Vol. 5, no. 1 (Oct. 1911). A Google search allowed me to see only a snippet view, but I was able to see the following. It ties into the rumor mentioned in Chapter XXX & Fanny never getting her land.

"With this false rumor in view, Ebenezer Collar and his wife made their way through the dense forest, where, scarcely any shelter from the inclemency of the weather, on the cold night of November 11th, his daughter Fanny was born."

EBENEZER & MARY (POLLY?) COLLAR

I'm trying to find the family of my g.g.grandmother, Mary (Stiner?) Collar. Ebenezer Collar married a "Polly" Stiner on January 27, 1846, in LaGrange County, IN. 10 months later my g.grandfather, George Henry Collar was born. It appears that Ebenezer married at least 4 times and fathered 14 children. Ebenezer is listed in the 1850 census in LaGrange County, IN with his wife as Mary b. abt 1813 in KY. I know this is my family because my g.grandfather George H. is 3 years old. I've assumed that "Polly" was a nickname or middle name of Mary. But I might be wrong. In the 1860 census in Porter Co, IN Ebenezer is married to Emeline b. 1830 They have a son, Alonzo, & 2 daughters, Pauline & Mary. It appears that my g.g.grandfather had one full brother, James, and many half siblings. This is all so confusing to me! Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone?

I wish I could be of some help to you, but unfortunately all I know is that Mildred Poynter married a Mr. Collar, first name unknown. The marriage likely occurred in Michigan, but I have no documentation to prove or disprove that fact. However, I do know that by 1900, Mildred was divorced and living with her mother Harriet Sibley Poynter in West Pagosa Springs, Archuletta county, Colorado.
In searching www.ancestry.com, I find a 30 year old George Collar, born NY, living in Lenawee county, Mi.
there is also another George W.Collar, age 4, born Mi., in Kent County, Mi. living with his parents; Sylvester and Mary. Both parents were born NY, so it's possible there is a connection between the Sylvester Collar and the 30 year old George Collar.
This is all the information I currently have, but would be interested to see what your research yields.
I am helping a student do research in my high school class on the Collar's-as they live on property we think was once owned by them in Wheatfield Township, Ingham County, Michigan. There is a barn which has a faded painted name of Geo Collar on it nearby. As far as we can tell, George was born in about Febuary of 1885 in Michigan. Had two siblings of which, Nora (1881) is known. Also born in Michigan. Parents were Hamblin and Attie, both born in NY around 1850's.
There were also two nearby Collar families in Alaideon Twp from the 1880's-1900.
Looking for any help.
