Larry....My gg grandfather William Collett lived in the same area as your John R. Collett off Porter Pike. Back then the area at Porter Pike and what is now called Grimes rd. was known as "Collett". Their is a nearly gone cemetery there known as Collett graveyard and once a school known as Collett School. About 20 years ago I visited Eliza Embry Collett and sister Mary Woodford Collett who lived on Grimes rd. The old William Collett home still stands. Just wondering how your John R. connects to my William. Hope to hear from you, .....Mark Smith, born in Bowling Green

Nancy Read (note spelling) (25 Aug 1842-12 May 1922) was the daughter of John James Read and Mary Pullen (Pulliam) of Allen County, KY. She married William Collett, the father of William Collett, the son, who married Mary Read. Mary (Mollie) Read was the sister of Nancy Read. The two William's have caused confusion among researchers. I descend from Rachel Read, sister of Nancy Read and Mary Read.

If her maiden name was Collett, she would not be a blood relative of any Harrison's. Every Harrison researcher has been told the same tall tale about being related to the 2 President Harrrison's [grandfather and grandson] but you should ignore rumors and start with what you know and can verify and work your way back using many resources such as census, birth, marriage, death records, etc.

I did not write the original post. So far we have not been able to trace our lineage farther than James Collett born between 1735 and 17445 in Maryland. ther is some speculation that his ancestors might have been French Hugonauts that fled to England and then to the american colonies. There is no proof or this yet.
Dianna Collette Davis

I have a death cert for a Grace E Underwood. 1898-1951 Her mother is listed as Eva Collett(maiden name) 1870-1953 Grace's father was David Hyder. Grace is buried at Lucy Run Cem. in Clermont county. Eva's death cert list her as Eva Hyder her father Casper Miller, no mother name. Eva is also buried at Lucy Run Cem. Could Eva had taken her mothers name then later took her fathers? Or is this just a typo? I have always been told Eva's name was Miller. Anyone untangle this??? I can't find a birth cert on Eva.Thank you. spiceysprks1@aol.com

Looking for Clive (possibly known as Richard and maybe deceased), Ian, Terry and Pamela Collett. They were all born in Petersfield/Gosport/Portsmouth area in late 1950s, early 1960. Their mother was Pauline Frances Burningham and Bernard Reginal R Collett.

Pauline died in 2004 I believe and her children were reunited with their Grandmother Lily's nieces at Pauline's funeral. Lily's maiden name was Thorn. Have since lost contact but recently found Pauline's brother Terry who is still alive. He lost contact with Pauline many years ago and I know that he would be delighted to be reunited with his sister's children. He has recently found family in England that he didn't know he had plus a brother in Austraila (again neither knew of each other's existence). This would be Pauline's brother too.

If anyone out their can help me find this family I would be really grateful so I can put them in touch with each other.

Hello not sure if you had any luck but I did a bit of research for you and found the following:

John Collett was born in Berkshire in 1842

He Married a Mahailla (that is how it was spelled) born 1848 in London
Are you sure her name was Wheeler? Could it be Goodwin? or perhaps she was married before?

Alice was born in 1867 in Middlesex.
Rose was born in 1869 in Middlesex.
The above was recorded in the 1871 census.

John Collett may have died and by the time of the 1881 census, Mahailla’s name now written as Mahala,

Mahala married a George Duffin (10 years her senior) and lived at 2 Curnock Cotts Western Rd, Norwood, Middlesex.
As of 1881 there were 2 children born to George Duffin and Mahala, George born 1878 and Mary born in 1980.
Rachael Collett who was born in 1873 and was living here also.

Also in the 1881 Census, Emma Collett b 1877 and John Collett b 1872 were living with a James and Mahala Goodwin at 3, Crown Field Western Road, Norwood and were listed as grand daughter and grand son, that makes me wonder if the Wheeler you mention as Mahala's surname was Goodwin.
Hope this helps

Barb,
I have William S. Collett in my file. He was married to Katie Lucilee Glisson who was a daughter of James Joseph "Joe" Glisson and Callie Stonebraker, my father-in-law's sister. I also have that William's father and mother were John and Mattie B. Then, I also have a Collett line that goes way back but have never made a connection to your Colletts. You might try contacting Barry Collett, who has contributed quite a bit to this Collett site.
Nancy Stonebraker

Hi, Barry

I am a freelance researcher in Topeka, Kansas. I had a photocopy of an obituary from a Smith County newspaper on microfilm that I had procured for a client, and on that page were printed several death notices. I typically post any additional death information that I have on message boards in case another researcher finds it helpful, as it apparently has in this case. If you click on my name and check my postings, you'll see that I post many, many obituaries.

I freelance through the Kansas State Historical Society. If you are interested in hiring me to follow this thread on Mr. Collett, check out my experience and fees by following this link to the list of private researchers on the KSHS web page, or contact me directly at rbaker13@ sbcglobal.net:

http://www.kshs.org/contact/privateresearcherlist.php

Kim Baker
Topeka, KS
