Earl V. Collier, aged 10, called for jury duty, Mobile AL 1912

from the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper:

Wednesday morning, May 15, 1912:

• "A ten-year-old boy appeared in the law and equity court yesterday in answer to a summons to serve on the jury.

"The presence of Earl V. Collier, an employee of the local office of the Western Union Telegraph Company, was not discovered by court attaches until the boy stood up to be sworn in with the rest of the prospective bunch. ... Amid laughter in which everybody in court joined, Judge Saffold Berney excused Master Collier from the necessity of listening to legal proceedings."

NOt my line, just sharing.

My father's name is Billy Ray Collier. His brothers all have the same names as the ones mentioned in your message, including one named Quentin. His parents are Quentin Collier and Ann King. They're from Big Stone Gap. I know he has two sisters but I'm not sure what their names are. I think one might be named Dorothy or something.

I just found your message regarding the Collins and Colliers in Habersham County in 1860. My ancestor is John Collier. My sister and I discovered on the census for 1960 that the census takers' writing looks like John Collins or John Colliens. We know this is our John Collier because his wife is Elizabeth. Also, he had a son named Barnet that is listed as an idiot; he was also listed as an idiot in the 1850 with his father, John. They, however, listed Elizabeth as appearing to be his daughter. Elizabeth was quite a bit younger than John.
I have ancestor Michael Collins b. around 1730 who married Ann Davis in the Kinderhook, NY area (near Albany, NY. They moved to the Sharon, Schoharie County area. His son Cornelius married Margaretha Hans. I am just wondering if anyone has heard of Collier morphing into Collin or Collins over time. Could Michael Collier (1650-1733) who married Fitje Van Hoesen and resided in Kinderhook be the grandfather of my Michael Collins?

I have a decent bit of info on this line. Collier's Ferry was originally called Pine Bluff Ferry and run by Henry Millard. James Parsons Collier and his wife, Mary Ellen (Robinson) Collier took over the ferry and renamed it "Collier's Ferry". James Parsons died in either 1865 or 1867 (conflicting data) and Mary Ellen Collier continued to run the ferry with her son, Starling Collier (b. circa 1837). Another son was named John Collier (b. circa 1844). I assume this is the John Collier that was your grandfather?

My ggg grandfather was James Thomas Collier, Sr. (b. 1840, d. 1868) who was also a son of James Parsons and Mary. He had a son named John W. Collier who was born in Jan 1860.
I have been researching his family, Freeh/Dunford and have found a lot of information.

Pat's sister Margot told me that she thought Ruby Collier was adopted, but in my research, Ruby was very young when her mother Olive Wood Collier died and Aaron remarried. So Ruby was raised by another woman.
If you want to compare notes, my e-mail is freehbie@yahoo.com.

For years people FAKED DAR data - the DAR is nothing but a con game of fake data and not a part of real genealogy research.

If you helped some one into the DAR based on what you said- you have committed FRAUD and that is a crime!

Be careful - the DAR has some major wrong info. IF this is one of the claims based on the Mosely Bible - then it is all fake. Many years ago a woman wanted in the DAR so she faked a Bible.

William Lokey has been accepted by DAR as a patriot and it goes via his son Benjamin who married Martha W Collier. I did the research for a friend and sent all the material in to DAR.
Do you know what happened to Merrill Collier's first wife? Did she return to her Williamson family in GA to rear the children born to her and Merrill Collier? I am still trying to determine if she is a sister to my gggrandfather, William S. Williamson, and possibly find their birth parents. My road block is the numerous Williams born to Williamson men of that era, with many of them living in close proximity to one another.

Merrell and Malinda were first cousins. In Merrell Collier's will her last name was spelled Loky. Merrell's first wife, was Lokie Williamson - which is what confussed the name in the will where Merrell's second wife's last name was Lakey - but spelled as Lokie. So in searching, you have to really look close to the spellings

1880 Census show state of birth as GA, 1870 Census shows SC, 1850 Census shows her at home and born in GA. She is buried at a small but nice cemetery just north of I-40 at the Seminole exit.

I have read that Merrill Collier was first married to Lokey Williamson, and his 2nd wife was Malinda Caroline Lokey. What is Lokey Williamson's relationship to Malinda Caroline Lokey? Were Lokey Williamson and Malinda Lokey cousins? I think it is more than a coincidence that they both have Lokey as a part of their name. Does anyone know if the Lokeys, Williamsons and Colliers were all related in some way, even before the two women married Merrill Collier? My family tie is through the Williamson's who I am trying to track through the familes they married into.

Re: Ukn. NC Collier married to Ukn NC Ratliff

I have just started working this line but it appears John Collier married Sarah Ratliff and they are the parents of at least some of these children. Henry Collier, my great, great grandfather, married Emma Caroline Marion in 1850, in Leake County, MS. Henry was born in Ala., about 1824.
I have children of John and Sarah Ratliff Collier as: John S, Matilda (married T. R. Golden), Sarah Ann (married W. P. Morrow and she died young and is buried in Good Hope Cemetery, Leake Co., MS; tomb states she is d/o John Collier), Thomas, Henry (also buried at Good Hope), and Susan (married John Billingsly).
Evidence points to Sarah Ratliff Collier as the daughter of Zachariah Ratliff (born TN) and Sarah L. Adams. Zach's father was probably William Ratliff and I think he was in Anson Co, NC, before he went to TN.
As I said, I have recently begun working this line and I'm sorry that I can't verify all of this information. Maybe this will help and you can follow up with documentation.
A Madison County, MS book gives a brief statement about the Ratliffs. According to this book, the Ratliffs and the Denson family (I know from prior research the Densons were in Anson Co, NC) left NC about 1790 and went to TN, then later to ALA. and on to Rankin County, MS about Dec. 1827. The Ratliffs owned land in both Madison and Rankin Co, MS and owned a ferry and boarding house on the Pearl River at a place still known as Ratliff's Ferry. The Ratliffs were wealthy until the Civil War. Some of my other family members married into this same Ratliff family.
