My family Collingwood

I am the Grand-daughter of George Henry Collingwood who came to Australia on the "Windsor Castle" in 1881. I am interested to find out about his brother William and sisters Emily, Elizabeth, Jane, and Sarah he left behind in Warwickshire. Apparently his father parted from his wife Emma, according to the Census, and had another child or two with another partner. He did not keep in touch with his family and I believe it was because of his fathers infidelity. Anyone know anything about the rest of the family.

My G Uncle, his wife and some of their children moved to Canada in the 1910's. He was George Collingwood from Leeds, Yorkshire who was living in Shropshire prior to leaving England, his wife was Catherine Ann nee Evans. It seems that they settled in Ottawa. Any info would be appreciated.

Tony Henderson

Grace Hall Collingwood

I've noticed some confusion between two Grace Hall Collingwoods and other Grace Collingwoods who were born at a similar time.

Grace Hall Collingwood was born 9 January 1862 in Newcastle, her parents were Matthew Collingwood (1812 Whittingham Northumberland) and Mary Hall Collingwood (nee Purvis). On the 9 June 1859 Matthew and Mary had their first daughter and they called her Grace Hall Collingwood and she died on the 8 December 1860 of the Croup. When their second daughter was born in 1862 they also called her Grace Hall Collingwood, and in 1864 another daughter called Elizabeth Ann was born. Grace Hall Collingwood married John Murphy in 1878 and became my great grandmother. John Murphy became a soldier in 1874 and served with the Royal Field Artillery for over 43 years. He and Grace had 12 children. Grace Hall Murphy (nee Collingwood) died on 23 April 1951.
Mary Hall Purvis was Matthew Collingwood's second wife, his first being Margaret Lyal whom he married in 1837. They had two children Margaret born in 1840 and Joseph born in 1842, both these children were born in Gateshead.

I visited the victory and there is a painting of a few crewmen surrounding a dying Nelson, one of them is listed as a collingwood, and must have been sailor on the ship during the battle. Is he in anyones family tree? Did he have brothers or sisters?

I also heard a rumour that a Collingwood may hav fired the shot that Killed the sniper that shot Nelson, although someone else reportedly claimed that fame.

IVe found this in the crew roll :

Collingwood
Edward Francis
21
Welsh
Supply

http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/oxford/hi/people_and_places/hist...

Unbelieveable!!! You have just made the connections that I was not able to
Louisa Helen born April 17, 1881....another source said 1882

Back in those days, young women and girls who got pregnant most often lost a lot of those babies through still born. or miscarriage, or they died shortly after birth.
So it is possible that
Louisa, Rachel, Mae (May) may have been the only ones to survive to adulthood.
I am printing off all of this info so that I can sit down with my cousin and we can try to put together what she knows and what I know and then I will follow the trail that you have provided.

Typing as I go through the pages, but there is much moreinformation than I will type up:

The widow section of the pension records takes up many of the pages. This is to prove Mary is his legal widow and that they have children under the age of 16. In 1901, when he died, the following daughters were listed. The dates are when they would turn 16:

Lula M (May) Feb 19, 1903
Martha (Mattie) Sept 14, 1906
Susanna Jan. 24, 1909

Alfred had brother Robert Collingwood who lived in Elk Point Dakota Territory.

One paper has:

Louisa born April 17, 1881
Luely [Lula] May, Feb 20, 1887
Mattie Sept 15, 1890
Susan Feb 2, 1893 [given as 1892 in other records, given as January 28th 1893 by a doctor in a later record and also as Jan 25th 1893...]

Alfred died June (might say Jan 14, 1901. One child was born between Louisa and Lully who died at 8 months of age.

Most of the info is on the youngest children because Mary would recieve a pension for them.

Pat,

I'll take an hour or so to look through the pension records for you.

I've just started reading the pension record, and the first couple of pages will be interesting to you.

These first couple of pages establish where Alfred Collingwood lived from the time of his Civil War experience to the time of the widow pension application. Here are some locations:

July 1, 1863 Pittsburg, PA. 1864, Vanango County, PA, 1865 Decatur County, Indiana. He has a brother named John Collingwood of Decatur, IN. 1868 Ionia County, Michigan. 1871 Elk Point, South Dakota. 1877 Washington County, Virginia. Alfred stated he lived in Kansas and California from 1857 to 1862 (wagon train), PA 2-3 years, Indiana 2 years, Michigan 4 years, Iowa 1 year, Indiana again for a year, Dakota 2 years, Virginia until 1881, then Sullivan County Tennessee. Whew!

He stated he was married to Lucinda Flannagan (spelling?), she died while he was in the navy.

A neighbor to the Collingwood family in South Dakota was present at the birth of some of the children and gives the following info:

Laura, born and died in South Dakota, might have been named Laura Ann

Lula May, called May, born around February 1887

The following were born before the family arrived in Dakota Territory:

Rachel oldest, about 5 years old in the mid-1880s
Sarah Jane
Ellen
-----------------

The records tell of his injury working on a boat during the war. At only 5 foot 3, he worked as a ship carpenter and was almost blinded while working with metal.

I'll continue looking for info on the children.

The Civil War naval pension records will probably answer your questions with complete certainty. The source where I found the information has over 290 records in Alfred Collingwood's file.

This file includes correspondence between Alfred, and after his death Mary, with the government to prove how much pension they should receive. I saw several pages with names, dates and birth places of children listed, as well as a copy of Alfred and Mary's marriage certificate. Because of the number of pages included in the file, it will take some time to search through it all.

A subscription to that other site will probably answer many of your questions and solve this question of parentage.

Beth

I will take your advice.
I have a cousin who is adamant that the line of Alfred is correct, but she does not have all of the info that I have and she is pretty much guessing.

I am learning that there are many mistakes made by the census takers, because of grammer and mispellings.
It is almost like someone is trying to make that square peg fit into a round hole.
RP, thank you so much for this info.
I am just wondering if it is possible that the name Henry could be Alfred Henry or even Henry Alfred Collingwood.
Elizabeth Roberts very well could be Mary Elizabeth Roberts.
I will have to see if I can take this info further and make a matchup with the 4 daughters that Henry and Elizabeth had.
I did not think about checking with FamilySearch for Alfred.
I only checked for Henry.
I do know that my grandmother lived at one point in time in Glade Spring Va so maybe I can now make a connection.

Please if you run across anymore info please let me know.
Again, I thank you very much.
Do you have any more information you can add? How did you identify the names of the head of the family, Henry and Elizabeth?

The closes I can find in the 1900 census, when at least one of the daughters was probably living at home, was the following:

Tennessee, Sullivan Country, Bristol

(a little difficult to read):

COLLINGWOOD, Alferd, head, born 1824, born NY
--- Mary A., wife, born 1872, born VA
daughters:
--- Nacy A. (Nancy?), 1883, TN
--- May L., 1887, TN
--- Mattie M., 1890, MO
--- Susa H., 1892, VA
--- Louisa A., April 1882, VA

Is this the correct family?

Have you found the family in online records you can post here?

Beth
not related

Hi Linda, It looks like we are related, as we have the same link back to Javis Collingwood. My link is; Javis down to Benjamin, to Javis and Elizabeth Collingwood, then to george and Eliza Collingwood nee Drury and my other link is John and Elizabeth Collingwood nee Backhouse
William Collingwood born 1844 married Jane Collingwood. They are my great great grandparents. They came to New Zealand and landed at New Plymouth in 1875. Their daugther Eliza Collingwood is my great grandmother and she married Joseph Neno Parker in 1889 at New Plymouth. Their youngest child Harold Parker is my grandfather, he married Jane Goodwin in 1930. Their daugther Noeline M. Parker is my mother.
William Collingwood married his first cousin Jane Collingwood. She is the daugther of John and Elizabeth Collingwood nee Backhouse.
There are many, many Collingwoods related to Jarvis. He had at least 10 children and it seems as thought each of them decided to do the same. Unusually many children survived and had large families of their own.
I am descended from Jarvis's son, Benjamin (bap 1733), then Benjamin's son Thomas (b1789), then his son, George (b1812), then George's son, Thomas (b1847), then Thomas's son, George Henry (b 1889)who was my grandfather. It doesn't look like a long tree when put like that! All except Thomas - 1847 were born in Lincs, he was born just over the border in Misterton Notts. They were mostly farmers, presumably tenant farmers as they moved farms in the area quite a bit.
I can't get further back than Jarvis, yet - hope to have more time to find him when I retire
Hope this helps
Linda

Hi

As I have stated before, Admiral Bra(i)thwaite did indeed marry Milcah Dobson's sister. In other words Admiral Brathwaite was Lord Collingwoods uncle.

There seems to be a lot of confusion among sources as to where Admiral Robert Roddam fits into the picture.

Some sources have him as the maternal grandfather of Lord Colls wife, Sarah Blackett. Sarah Blackett's parents were John Erasmus Blackett and Sarah Roddam. Her paternal grandfather was John Blackett and maternal grandfather - Admiral Roddam. Admiral Robert Roddam died in 1808.(Book - Life of Lord Collingwood et al)

Other sources have Sarah Blackett's maternal grandparents as Robert Roddam ans Sarah Reed. However both died of smallpox, Robert in 1744 and Sarah in 1745. Sarah Roddam (Sarah Blackett's mother) was brought up by her great uncle, Alexander Collingwood. They have Admiral Roddam as being married three times with no children.(National Dictionary of Biography, Lord Collingwood Family Tree et al).

Hope this helps

Fred

I am interested in the precise nature of Lord Collingwood's relationship with his naval sponsors, Richard Braithwaite and Roddam.
I believe Braithwaite (or Brathwaite) must have been married to a sister of Milcah Dobson.
I have little knowledge of Admiral Roddam.
Can you help?

Hi

You may be able to find Admiral Braithwaite's Family Tree in "Brett's Landed Gentry." This book was published on a regular basis by the same publishers of "Brett's Peerage." Most main libraries hold copies.

Fred

Hi Megan

I think you have been spun a cock and bull story like many of us have about our connection to Lord Coll.

I can find no Ravenhill's or Sophia in Lord Colls family tree.

Sarah was indeed the name of Lord Coll's elder daughter as well as his wife's name. Sarah married George Newnham and the surname became Newnham-Collingwood. This line died out with the death of Sarah and George's two daughters.

Fred

Hi Edd

I have done extensive research on Lord Colls family tree over the years and am interested where you fit in. As you will no doubt be aware there are no living direct descendants bearing the name Collingwood. Any direct descendants come from the Denny line of Lord Coll's younger daughter, Mary Patience.

Fred

Hi Saergytha

You are correct in that Milcah Dobson's sister married Admiral Bra(i)thwaite. In other words Admiral Brathwaite was Lord Colls uncle.

Secondly there seems to be confusion as to Lord Colls birth date. He was born on 26/9/1748 not 1750.

Lord Coll served under Admiral Brathwaite on a number of vessels: Lord Coll entered the navy in 1761 and served under Commander Brathwaite on the "Shannon."

In 1766 Lord Coll was a Midshipman on "Gibraltar" under Commander Brathwaite.

From 1767-1772 Lord Coll was a Master's Mate on "Liverpool" under Commander Brathwaite.

There more usual spelling I have seen from the surname is Brathwaite without the 'i'.

I hope this helps.

Fred
