Re: Photo of Donald Anderson Collins

I found him on ancestry.com with both WWI and WWII Draft Registrations. He was born 2 Dec 1894 in Coopers Mills, Whitefield, Lincoln Co Maine and on his WWI DR he was working at the Univ of Cal in their Dairy in Berkley, CA.

In his WWII DR he is married to Alma Harriett Manning and working at Auerfarm, on Simsbury Road, Bloomfield, CT.

He signed both DRs as D.A. Collins. His Maine BC states his parents are Peter S. & Caroline Anderson Collins.

On the 1930 US Census they are living in Hartford CT with NO children and they married in 1921/22 at ages 28 and 23 and they were 35 & 30 in the 1930 Census. He was working as a Farm Manager on a General Farm.

I can't find them on findagave.com nor the SSDI.

They don't seem to have had any children. I found their family tree without any children listed. There is no date of death listed for either Donald or Alma Collins.

Peter S. Collins was a minister and Caroline died before 1907 as Peter was remarried to Laura W. with son Stewart B. Collins b.1907 in CT - can't find anything on him either.

Hope this helps.

I picked up this photo at an antiques store in Quechee, Vt in hopes of returning it to a family member who would appreciate having it. The information written on the back in pencil is "Donald Anderson Collins Age 8 mos.", the photo was taken by W.H. Howe, Pittsfield, Maine. Donald is sitting up in a lace covered chair, wearing only a diaper. I'm judging the picture to be taken around the time of 1880s-1910s. I did a search of family trees and documents and couldn't find him. I can provide a scanned image if someone needs to visually confirm (which may be difficult, since he is only 8 months old). I hope this helps someone!

Hello, Clarence Collins fammily was in KY and move to Induana. He had two sister's. John Franklin Collins is buried in Indiana. I was told that Floyd Collins was a cousin to Clarence. I have not researched lately on that line. I have more information on the Collins family, most are still up north. I don;t know who Clarence came to Texas with, he died when my Dad was 4 years old. His brother travel to Indiana and met the sisters who also are deceased.
My file is in my desk top. I would need more information, names an dates. Clarence died in 1927. I am connected to some distant cousins in Indiana.
pfcr@aol.com

I realize this is a very old thread, but since I see some people have continued to reply to it, I thought I would jump in.

I am not related to Floyd Collins, however, I am related to William Burke (Skeets) Miller, who attempted to rescue Mr. Collins when he was trapped in Sand Cave. He was my maternal grandmothers' cousin.
My interest in Mr. Collins is because I have a close friend with the maiden name of Collins, and I am wondering if she may be related to Floyd. She is from Indianapolis, Indiana, now lives in Texas. Is there any information about the Collins' who lived in Indiana, and if so, how were they related to Floyd and how many of them were there?
Names of siblings/children, if possible, if it turns out she was not related to Clarence.

It would be fascinating to learn if our two families had somehow reconnected decades later by chance. I have not had to rescue my friend from a cave yet, and hope I never have to, although we have gone caving together in Kentucky, Tennessee (and soon North Carolina.) We have endured many (sometimes amusing) mishaps together on various other adventures.

Re: Luther H. Collins

We are at the same place I think. I do have some newspaper abstracts of articles pertaining to the death of L.H. Collins that I found online. One describes how it happened in the Portsmouth Navy Yard. If you do not have those, I'll send you the cite for them.

Lilian Bostick married Ernest Leroy Bostick. My mother was Francis Elizabeth, her brother was George Frederick, and her Sister, Lois. All are deceased. About twenty years ago i compiled some civil war records on my ancestors, but I knew nothing about L.H.C.'s ancestors, so I have no military records about his family either. My first true genealogy search began a few days ago. Thanks for the offer about Theodore. I don't think they'd be much help to me now.

One of the above abstracts mentions that L.H.C. was a native of Georgia. So after I complete some more directed research, I'll try try a census search for L.H.C. in Georgia, or North Carolina, or wherever. I am wandering now if he was born in S.C, and then moved to Georgia, perhaps near to a relative-- my grandparents, or a child or a sister. Just to complicate things some more: Grandmother said frequently that he was Irish. Maybe his grandfather was.

Let me know about the abstracts. If I stumble on something while I'm building my tree, I'll let you know.

Woody

Family of Timothy Collins b abt 1831 Ireland d 1903 Cornwall

I wonder if there is anyone else researching this family ...

Timothy COLLINS and his family lived in Quarry Street, St. Germans, Cornwall. According to census returns he was born about 1831 in Bandon, Co. Cork. By the 1871 census he is married to Julia born about 1845 in Tallow or Lismore, Co. Waterford and living in Cornwall. His occupation is Licensed Hawker.

Next door is Catherine COTTER, widow of Richard COTTER, age 60, born Lismore, Co. Waterford about 1811. By the 1881 census, Catherine is living with Timothy and Julia and is enumerated as his mother-in-law.

So Julia's maiden name was COTTER. There is a COTTER/COLLINS marriage 14 Nov 1865 at St John the Baptist, Camborne the details of which match all the above information.

Timothy and Julia had:
Julia 1868
Margaret 1868
Bridget 1870
Richard 20 Jul 1872 - served in the Royal Navy
John 1875
Thomas Henry 1876
Catherine 1880
Mary Louisa 1882

Julia states in the 1911 census that she was married for 46 years (checks with the 1865 marriage) and had 9 children, 7 living.

My 2 x great grandfather was John COTTER who lived in Saltash, not far from St. Germans, and this family was always said to be connections but I can't make it work.

I'm just hoping other people are looking at this too!!

Thanks
Isabel
Thank you for getting back with me. Luther would be my ggrandfather on my mother's side. I have been in contact with the family of Theodore Roosevelt Collins, who would be Lillian's brother. Do you have this information? I do not have any info other than the fact that Lillian married a Bostik and had a son named George. If you have any information that you would like to share it would be great. I'll be happy to send you what info I have on the Collins family. I enter that family through Luther's daughter Gertrude who married Louis Williams.
again if you would like to contact me through email please feel free to do so
beaudo2@aol.com
I look forward to hearing from you.
Pat

I am the grandson of Lillian Collins ( Bostick), Luther Hamilton Collins' daughter. She told me that her Aunt Gabrielle (sic?) was one of Luther's sisters. My grandmother said that as a girl she would visit Gabrielle who was married and living in Swainsboro, Georgia. She did not use her married name. She also mentioned an Aunt Daisey. I only have two other hints that I have not pursued at any length. Grandmother claimed that her father and sisters came from Texas to South Carolina. Also, when I drove through Batesburg-- many years ago-- I saw a very worn informational sign on a nearby road that was for the town of "Collins." I have been stumped getting beyond L.H.C and A.M.B. in my own search.

W. Bowden

Perry Collins/Blackford County, Indiana

I am looking for information about Perry Collins born in 1824 in Delaware and residing in Blackford County, Indiana by 1850. Both parents were born in Delaware. He married Sophia Jane Ward in 1849 in Champaign County, Ohio. They had a son Johnson or John in 1856. Sophia married Abraham Guseman in 1859 so my assumption is that Perry must have died sometime between 1856 and 1859, but I can't find anything about his death. Jane Collins, age 68, is listed in the household in the 1850 census. That seems old to be his mother, so it could be a mother or grandmother. I can't find anything about her death either.

Hi Samantha,

I am the great granddaughter of Bob Collins so I guess that makes us cousins. My Grandmother, Jessie used to talk about Uncle Grady and I think I may have met him before in their kitchen in Wichita Falls. I am also working on the Collins side of my geneology so let me know if you get anywhere.

Joseph Reynolds, Amanda Gatrell & Simpson Families Wayne, KY, to Polk, MO, 1840s

I'm trying to identify the parents and birth date/location of Joseph Reynolds, born about 1819 in Kentucky.

Here is what I know. Joseph was married to Amanda Gatrell in Russell County, KY, by (pastor?) Wm. A. Cooper, on 21 April 1842. Amanda was born about 1822. Her parents were Dennis Gatrell (b abt 1875) and Agnes Payne (b abt 1789 to Philemon Payne and Rachel Wilson). Joseph and Amanda had nine children:
(1) James Tipton b abt 1842 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. He m Loduska Leathers in AR in 1872. Then m Mary Elizabeth Heaton in 1878 in AR.
(2) Sabra Ann b abt 1845 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. She m William Calvin Curnutt abt 1868 in Arkansas
(3) Sarah Ann b abt 1846 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. She m Samuel Jackson Cowan abt 1871 in Arkansas
(4) Martin Taylor b abt 1848 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. He m Rebecca Collins abt 1878 in Texas
(5) Artimecy Elizabeth b abt 1850 in Polk Co, MO. She m Samuel Jackson Cowan abt 1880 in Missouri. By that time Samuel was the widower of her sister, Sarah Ann.
(6) Lucinda A b abt 1853 in Polk Co, MO.
(7) Mary A b abt 1855 in Polk Co, MO.
(8) Joseph O b abt 1859 in Carroll Co, AR.
(9) Franklin Davenport b 1862 in Harrison, Carroll Co, AR. He m Margaret Elizabeth Collins (sister of Rebecca Collins, above) in 1882 in Denton Co, TX.

The family moved from Russell or Wayne County, KY, to Polk County, MO, about 1847-8. They moved about the same time as a few other close families from Wayne County, KY: McKinneys, Higginbothams, Dowells and Simpsons. Each of these families were related to Amanda through her mother, Agnes Payne. More specifically, males from each of these families married sisters of Agnes in the 1820s in Wayne Co, KY.

Joseph, Amanda, and several children are listed in the 1850 census in Polk Co. Some land patents list a Joseph Reynolds as a patentee in Polk Co. The family later moved to NW Arkansas and are listed in Carroll Co in the 1860 census. It appears that Joseph fought for the 15th Arkansas Northwest Confederate Regiment. Contrary to death info provided for Joseph on many ancestry.com trees, the Civil war records I've found don't indicate that he died, or even served in the battle of Vicksburg. Some civil war records indicate that a Joseph Reynolds from the 15th Arkansas NW Regiment lived until the end of the war.

Amanda remarried Henry Holt in Boone Co, AR, in 1870. She died in 1904 and is buried in Perryman Cemetery in Montague Co, TX, along with her sons James Tipton Reynolds and Martin Taylor Reynolds.

I'd be glad to be in touch with any other researcher looking at this family and any associated families. Of particular interest is any information on Joseph's origins, including birth location and/or parents. I'm glad to share the additional info that I have so please don't hesitate to reach me.

Thanks in advance!
Tommy Reynolds

This is very strange:

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

It's a death certificate from Floyd County for Charity Ridles, a married housewife. Parents Jackson Collins and Nancy Jarrell (Farrell?). Informant William Ridle.

All of that fits with the census data BUT then it has that she was 4 years old (which can't be correct since it also has that she gave birth to a child.)

The birth and death dates are only about 2 months apart, too -- not four years.

I think this is your Charity, but the dates were confused.

How did you find that 1910 Census?!?! I've looked about 20 times for it and couldn't find it because of the stupid misspelling 'Layfayett' - grrrr! Thank you for pointing me to this!

You should see all the crap I've uncovered about him between 1856 and 1861! My GGGfather Lafayette was an actual outlaw (not a very good one, apparently), and from the stories, he shares my bizzare sense of humor! When he was led off to prison, he was playing, 'O, Susanna [Don't You Cry For Me]' on an accordian! I love it!!!!

Thank you, again!

Sincerely,
Dan

Thanks for the information, but the Johanna I am checking on was the wife of Dennis Haley. They came to the US in 1833 from County Cork. They were the parents of Mary Haley as well as my great grandfather William Haley. Johanna Haley's maiden name was Oleary from what I have been able to determine, but I have not been able to locate the town they were from in Ireland.

Bill Haley

Bill Haley
