I remember friends of theirs from the old country by the name of Beruzzi who lived in Readsboro. We visited several times back in the 60"s but I don't ever remember any Colo's in Readsboro. My COLO family settled in Windsor Locks, Ct. Drop me a line.

Hi Cousin! I have been looking for you! Yes, your g-g- grandmother was sisters with mine! Ellen Norton (Nell) married Thomas Norton, her daughter Jane was my grandmother. My mother was Helen. I stumbled upon the Colo message board and was stunned to find it! We have another cousin Barbara Johnson whom I had the great pleasure to meet just two weeks ago. She has done an extensive amount of research, most of it before the internet! Her father is Tom whose mother was Lucy whose mother was Mary Brown, sister to Anne and Ellen(Nell). I see that you had been on the board years ago. I really thought that we wouldn't find you after so long. I also heard from Anne who has also posted on the board! Barbara and I really think there is a connection between her family and Rose. Rose will not be quite the mystery after we connect. I have a picture and an artifact as well as her notes in the Bible. My email is Nixco2000@comcast.net. Let's exchange info!

All of the sisters are very happy that we have found each other. I believe they are in heaven thinking "what took you so long?" I look forward to hearing from you!

Jane(MacDonald) Nix

Hi Jane,

This is fantastic, we are related! I am finally gaining gound on the mystery of Rosa Colo. I have also seen her name as Rose A. Colo. My g-g-grandmother was Annie Brown daugher of Rosa Colo & William Brown. She did have a sister named Nell. I also have sisters listed as Bridget, Mary & Katherine (Kate) and a brother Thomas. I can't believe there is a family bible. Was it passed down in your family? Please email me, I would love to exchange info with you and learn more
Patty (O'Toole) Fisher
Anne,

I believe we are related through Rose Colo (Coloway) Brown who was married to William Brown and settled in Chicago in 1864. She had 6 children: Anna, Thomas, Catherine, Mary, Ellen and Rose. They came to America from Athelone, County Westmeath through NY, having lived for a time in Haverstraw, NY where the first 3 children are born from 1852 through 1857. Latter are born in Chicago. I know Rose had a brotherJerriamiah. The names are so similar I am guessing this is the same family. Mary is my ggrandmother.

Hello Family!
I find it amazing to have finally found a connection to this side of my family. Rosa Colo would be my g-g-grandmother! I was going through the William and Rose Brown family bible yesterday to get some names to try again with and FINALLY had this great fortune! My mother was Helen Ward MacDonald, her mother was Jane Norton Ward, her mother was Ellen Brown Norton and her mother was Rosa Colo Brown. I believe you have her name down as "Nell" and possibly that was her nickname.
I know many of the same basic facts as you do. I also have family pictures, none of William but one of Rosa as an older woman, one of Thomas (who I believed died at an early age) and one of a sister who had suffered from a physical handicap. I also know that William was a brickmaker. There is a book online which references him regarding YOUR g-grandmother's marriage to Luke O'Toole. (Isn't this the Luke written about in "Studs Lonnigan"?).
I'm looking forward to further communication about our family with all those who are interested!
Jane

Hello Mary,
I am finally getting back to the Colo's. MY GGrandmother
was the daughter of Thomas Colo and Mary Ryan. She was Baptized in Drumraney in 1835.She had a sister Catherine(1821), brother Jeremiah (aka Darby 1830), and Ellen 1824.
All but Catherine, we know died here. Jeremiah married
Susan Brady and had 4 children- Mary A, Catherine, Thomas
and John B. Bridget married Malachi Mullen my GGrandfather.
There were no children from Jeremiah's side, hence the Colo
name is gone here to our knowledge.
We do know that they were 1st cousins to John McCormack the
famous tenor. Could the connection be from Julia Cormick's
family?
It would be wonderful to find out more about the family.
Anne

Colo families in Vermont

I am looking for info on any Colo families in Vermont between 1890 and 1920. My great grandparents were Luigi and Margherita (maroni) Colo and lived in Readsboro VT about that time. I was looking for any possible siblings. I have been up there to look at records but I have no way of telling if anyone else is in fact a relative or just a non-related family with the same last name. They came from Pre di ledro Austria/Italy (that section went back and forth between the 2 countries). Any info would be appreciated.

She was born in 1835- at the very beginning of the Baptism book when records were kept. Her parents were Thomas Colo and Mary Ryan. Other names we have in the Colo family are Catherine, Ellen, Jeremiah, John,Mary, and Darby ( I believe a nickname for Jeremiah).
There is much we don't know. I don't know if this is any help to you but good hunting.
Anne Sullivan

My GGrandmother was Bridget Colo from Drumraney, Co. Westmeath, Ireland. She was born Sept. 1835 and died June 1921 in Cambridge, MA. Her parents were Thomas Colo and Mary Ryan from Drumraney. Thomas Colo died in Sept. 15, 1875 in Ballinlug, District of Ballynac-Mullingar, Westmeath.
She had a sisters Ellen and Catherine (who died in Nov 1903 in Cambridge)and a brother Jeremiah (known as Darby). Jeremiah was born May 1830 and died April 1892 in Boston.
I don't know if this has any connection to your family but would be interested if there is a connection
Anne

Patty,
Thank you for you message. My GGrandmother was born Sept. 1835 in Drumraney, Co. Westmeath and died June, 1921 in Cambridge, MA. Drumraney is not too far outside of Athlone heading east towards Mullingar. I did see her Baptism record in the Church there. Her parents were Thomas Colo and Mary Ryan. They both died in 1875 in Ballinlug, District of Ballynac-Mullingar, Westmeath. There was an Ellen, Catherine, Jeremiah (nicknamed Darby), and Bridget. According to the Griffith's Evaluation, there were other Colo or Coloe's in the surrounding areas.
I also noticed that you are researching the O'Toole name. We know very little but there was a relative named James Egan and ? O'Toole from Chicago. They were related to our Colo or Mullen side. When they came with the cattle to Boston, they would stay at my Grandparents house. We do know that O'Toole was involved in politics as a Ward Boss or something but very little is known.
It would be great if there was some more info that we could share.
Good hunting and hope to hear from you.
Anne

Anne,
This is incredible! My grandfather William R. O'Toole
is that ward boss. He was alderman of the 14th ward in
Chicago from abt. 1914-1932. His mother was Anne Brown
(nee Colo). Anne Brown's sister Bridget married an Egan
probably the James you mentioned. When I was little I do
remember a John Mullen, who was a cousin of my grandfather
coming to family dinners and get togethers. I would be
interested if you have any more info and how the Egan's
and Mullen's are related to the Colo family. You can
reach me directly through my e-mail: pef@qwest.net
Thank you,
Patty

Anne,
I read your message regarding your g-grandmother,
Bridget Colo. My g-g-grandmother was Rosa (or Rose)
Colo. I'm trying to trace her family and not having
too much luck. She married William Brown and he was
Co. Westmeath. I know they lived for a time in Haverstraw,
NY which is where my g-grandmother, Anne Brown was born in 1854.
I know Rosa would have been the same generation level as your
g-grandmother Bridget. Is it possible they are from the same
family, or perhaps cousins? I'm assuming she was from Co. Westmeath
too, since her husband was. At some point they came to and settled
in Chicago. William Brown died in Chicago in 1894 at age of 68, Rosa was
still alive at that time. I'm trying to locate her death record for
more info. William and Rosa's children were: Rose, Nell, BRIDGET,
MARY, THOMAS, Kate and of course my g-grandmother Anne. Do you have
any other info on the Colo family from Co. Westmeath?
Patty

Mark,
I have no record of anyone in France/Italy but
my GGrandmother was Bridget Colo (sometimes
spelled Coloe) and I saw her birth record at
the parish church in Drumraney, Co. Westmeath,
Ireland. She was born in 1835. I also saw a
Darby Colo in that area in the Tithe Applotments
There were several other Colo's in the area
in the Griffith's Evaluation. My GGrandmother's
father was Thomas.
I don't know if there is any connection.
If there is, I'd love to hear of it.
Anne Sullivan
