I am the great granddaughter of Conrad Colonel who settled with most of his family in New York City. Our family always pronounced the name as in the military designation "Colonel."

Rita,

Yes, Clara is Christobel's mom. In my research I am having a hard time getting any info on Clara's husband, Andrew Krausman. All I have is that he is Christobel's father. Also having problems getting info on her first husband Richard McNally. The problem is that I have heard all these stories but can't prove them, and I would love to be able to tell my mom whether or not those stories are true. For instance, the Krausman's had a "rich" life in NY...something to do with government work, and that they came from Germany. As for Richard McNally, heard he had syphallus and went "crazy" and was put in a mental home in MA. I do see he died there in MA, but that is it.

Just so you have the history: Christobel (great-grandmother) and Richard McNally had a daughter Clare. Clare McNally(my grandmother) and Ralph E Cushing had a daughter Christina (mom) who had me!

So yes....sounds like we are related! Whoohooo! How cool is that!

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!!

Krista

Dear Krista,

I am the granddaughter of the Cecilia Lambrecht Colonel who was the sister of Clara Lambrecht. I believe that Clara was the mother of your Christobel. If so, we have lots of connections we can make.

Rita

My great grandfather was Conrad Colonel and my grandfather was his son Peter. I have information on his line and his mother Barbara Arnold.

Why didn't John settle in NY? Unlike the rest of the family who were involved in making furniture, he is listed in a census as a brewer.

No on the Cornell as a possible spelling. The spelling problem occurs from the way we pronounce it incorrectly which is directly from the French/German influences. If you think about how the military spells Colonel gives a hint of how this came about. I finally went far enough back to find the second name change in the Colonel. I am not sure how much further I can get without some major visits to the LDS Library in Cincinnati. Jason, I received a note from either here or from ancestry from you. We are in the same line. I need the complete names for your grandfather and grandmother. In me search I am at the point where I need the book of documentation for the 1769s & then again for the pre 1680s. These of course are in microfilm at the LDS in Salt Lake City. Also I have a more current need. That is getting all of the relatives from Boniface Down. In other words placing you in my file. By the way I do keep my records straight in the Family Tree program. You can email me at dsdonell1 @ atlantic.net.

There are "Colonels" in New Richmond, Ohio who prnounce their name "Cornell". I wonder if the pronunciation of the last name caused two different spellings as the family dispursed throughout the country.

Boniface Colonel - 1800's to present

I am new to genealogy research so any suggestions would be helpful. Boniface and his young bride from Alsaece Lorraine ran away to America and arrived in New York City in the mid 1850's with the new name of Boniface Colonel. Colonel was his military rank. By 1860 he was in Cincinnati, Ohio with his wife and 2 daughters. After her death he married a Magdalene Keller in Cincinnati, Ohio. He worked in a brewery in a section of Cincinnati called the "Over the Rhine Area". He and his second wife Magdalene Keller moved to New Richmond, Ohio. All of the Colonels from New Richmond, Ohio are decended from them. I am most interested in looking for his real name. He took his rank as his name so that his children could find out his true name. I assume therefore that Boniface was his original surname or giiven name. His first wife was supposed to be a Jewish princess which is why they had to run away. His son Joe Colonel owned Colonel's Place in New Richmond, Ohio. Thank You All for any information you can give me.

Hello Everyone!!
I have "Cornell" lineage within my ancestry, and recently came upon an interesting finding which listed my ggg-grandfather as "Benjamin Colonel" and was really puzzled about it. I know from census information here in Kansas, that they lived here as "Cornell", and I'm sure thats the surname, but was wondering why if anybody could tell me, that someone would have had his last name as such? Thanks for any help.
Rowena Marten

How great! I'm a great-great-granddaughter of John Boniface Colonel. He immigrated to America in 1850 and married Magdalene Keller (who had immigrated from Baden Baden Germany in 1865).
Their kids were:
1. J. Francis Colonel
2. Joseph Colonel (10/13/1873-5/15/1942)--This was the one who founded Joe's Place in New Richmond, OH
3. Mary Anna Colonel
4. William H. Colonel
5. John Colonel
6. Helen Colonel
I have other info on the spouses and kids/grandkids, etc. if you're interested.
I didn't know about the name Colonel coming from his military rank. If you find out any more about that, please let me know.
How are you related to the oroginal Joseph (the one born in 1783)? We'll have to figure out how we're related.
Another of your postings was about May Boots. She married Joseph Colonel (b. 1898) who was the son of the Joe Colonel who started Joe's Place.
Hope this isn't too confusing.
Please write back!
