Mrs. Otis Colson, Rockland, Maine (1876)

I have no connection to this family, but found this while doing other research. This appeared in the Jan. 18, 1876 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier Gazette in the Men and Women column:

“The wife of Mr. Otis Colson, residing on Gay street, fell down stairs last Friday morning, and sustained severe injuries, breaking several ribs. Dr. Banks was summoned. Mrs. Colson is an elderly lady, and her escape from death was wonderful.”

Amy, it is so wonderful to hear from you!

Sadly, I have no memories of my great-grandfather, James Polk Colson. I did know his wife, Lucille Mae and spent every summer of my childhood visiting her and my grandfather James Leo in California and then Montana. I believe it was after James Polk died that my grandfather built a small home on his land for his mother Lucille to live on. I know that she and James Polk had many children and were also foster parents to many kids as well.

I do not know much about the lives of James Polk, James Burrel, James Russel, or Aaron Colson but it is my goal to track the Colson line back to their US immigration.

I assume your father was the youngest of James and Mattie's children? My research shows their children as Mabel R(1909), Lola A(1914), Beaulah(1916), James(1918) and Herman(1919). Please share any details that you have and I will do my best to answer any of your questions as well.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi, Emily. I am the daughter of Russell Smith Colson, who is the brother of your great-grandfather James Polk Colson. My father is 90 years old and lives in San Diego. I perhaps knew your great-grandfather when I was a child, and I did see him one more time about 30 years ago at a Colson reunion. I'm sad I don't know many of the Colsons, as my parents were divorced when I was 4. My father is the last surviving child of James Burrell and Mattie Smith Colson. I do not have any information past Elizabeth and Aaron. I hope to keep in contact with you!

AARON COLSON born 1831

My name is Emily Colson. Daughter of Jeffrey Colson, son of James Leo Colson, son of James Polk Colson (born 1918), son of James Burrel Colson (born 1877), son of James Russel Colson (born 1852), son of Aaron Colson (born 1831). Aaron Colson was married to Elizabeth Teasley in Franklin Georgia in 1851. I am finding no information after this wedding date. I am interested in finding out places and dates of death for Elizabeth and Aaron, as well as any information on their parents. I show both of them possibly being born in Hartville Georgia so I am also interested in any other Colson connections/stories from that area. Thanks!!!

MD Colsons (William, Sarah Elizabeth, Margaret)

Hi, I'm looking for information on some Carroll County, MD Colsons. I've found William H. (b. abt. 1820) who had Josephine (b. abt. 1849), Martin (b. abt. 1851), Margaret (b. abt. 1854), Laura (b. abt. 1855), Sarah Elizabeth (b. 11 Jul 1856), and George (b. abt. 1859). He married a second wife, Margaret A. Picket in Oct 1860 in Frederick, MD and had more children: Catherine (b. 1861), Cinderella (b. 1865), Frank (b. 1868), Bertie (b. 1871), John (b. 1875) and May (b. 1873).

Sarah Elizabeth Colson married Beverly Waugh Widerman (b 1858 d 1940) and had Wilbur Waugh Widerman (b & d 1887), Maude Beatrice Widerman [later Sauter] (b 1889 d 1965), and Claude Leroy Widerman (b 1893) and died in 1936. She and BW are in Mountain View Cemetery in Howard County.

I'm especially interested in the names of William's parents and his first wife (who was Sarah Elizabeth's mother). I've seen Coulson and Calsum as variant spellings/mistranscriptions of the last name on the censuses (I've found them for 1860 [Freedom, Carroll, MD], 1870 [Freedom, Carroll, MD--this census seems to be missing children], 1880 [Elysville, Howard, MD], and 1900 [Freedom, Carroll, MD]). I'm happy to share/trade information, just email me!

I did find a Fred born in Missouri and in the 1900 Census listed him, siblings and parents as all living in Mountain Grove Township (Excluding Mountain Grove City) Wright County, Missouri
list of family;
Peter Colson born Jun 1846 in Sweden
Christine born Aug 1846 Sweden
Frank born Dec 1881
Emma born Feb 1883
Dora born Nov 1884
Freddie born Sep 1886
Alice born Apr 1891
Lyle born jul 1894
So now I have my Great-Grand-Father and his family. This is all I have been able to find so far but will keep looking. As more records become online we all will be able to find many more records. I have been trying for over 30 years to find my mother's grand-father with nothing as results until now. So happy hunting, not sure this will be of any help as there are so many Colson's and may have the same names.
Paul
Barbara Baker. I, too, have tried to find Charles through the years. His dad designed a Piggly Wiggly here in Texarkana many years ago. Charles and I went to Junior High together, and his grandfather and my dad were railroad men. He and his mom, Fay, used to live pretty close to us, and then he was sent away to military school, and from there, he joined the navy in the middle 60's. Last I heard, he had married a girl from California by the name of Carol Jean Belentti. Through the years with everyone growing up, getting married and moving on with their lives, old friendes lose touch. In the past couple of years I have talked to one of his best friends here in Texarkana, and Tim was asking all kinds of questions because he had lost touch with him too. I know he has a birthday coming up in June, and he is 2 or 3 years older than I am, and I am now 60. I do think he was the 3rd, not 2nd and his eyes were dark brown when we were teens. Hope this helps you in your search. His biological dad, Charles and his stepmother, Aloha, did live in Shreveport, Louisiana, but I feel like his dad is probably gone by now. Good luck.

I was so impressed with the time spent and how well the researchers did in posting their info to the ayers site, I
wouldn't mind volunteering some time to post on a site like that. After I get my recent info entered...I'm going ahead full steam, I think 'll look into assisting in some data input. Now more than ever I want to get my full family tree listed on Ancestry, hopefully by the end of this month I'll do that, now I have close to 3,000 people in my tree and I'm sure a lot of people could use that info. I don't have any photos posted or documents such as marriage certs, but I did enter the number of each cert and where obtained. Whin I swithc to FTM 2010 I'll put up some photos....I have lots of Barr pics from late 1800's here in Illinois.

Again, THANKS so very much for all of your help ! I'll let you know as soon as I get the file up on Ancestry....

That Cook County database is great....that is where I've gotten into the most trouble (lol) I ordered my dad's brothers divorce papers, he was married to one gal and then got her younger sister pregnant....NO one in the family ever knew about that, then he married the younger sister. It turned out for the best, they stayed together the longest
until he died. Then I ordered my husband's aunt's divorce papers, she and her ex hubby are still living together and
pretend they're still married, only I found out they no longer are. You can get some great stuff from Cook County.
I've gotten several hard to find birth certs and I like that you can just print them at home.

The Joliet probate records are in a damp, dingy old basement and you need to make an appointment to see them. As for the coroner-police records, hubby is looking into where the 1888-1900 ones would be held. Will county is lucky they can even find the new records, let alone the old ones. It's a MESS at the Joliet county building. I almost start hyperventilating every time I think about having to go down there, if it wasn't for Sue I'd probably never go.

That website for ayrshireroots.com is so helpful. In just a couple of hours today I was able to go back and piece the Richmond and Barr families to the mid 1700's and I'm sure after I get that all entered and a decent printout, I'll be
able to go back further, it picks up the gaps where Ancestry leaves off. I think the scottish gov site will help a lot too. Kind of sad though that I'm finding so much about Agnes Barr's roots but can't find a darn thing here in the US about her. That ayrshire site makes for some interesting reading, the transcribers have quite the witt !!
One of the occupations I came across for one of the Barr's on a census was "Spirit Merchants Operative"....quite fancy I think for bartender !! Most of the Barr's were bonnett dresser or bonnett knitter and Agnes, my great grandmother, was a seamstress, or stitcher. Also one of the men was a gas pipe layer, interesting because my mother's father was a gasfitter. He went to bed X-Mas eve when my mother was 7 and never woke up, he had been poisoned by all of those years of working in the gas company around the fumes. Can you imagine getting up Christmas morning at age 7 and being told your father was dead, how sad.

Anyway, that ayrshire site makes for some interesting reading, I try to get research done and then get sidetracked with the little quips.

I'll keep you posted on how I'm doing. Have a great nite !

I have found so much info this past 24 hours my head is spinning!! I's going to take me forever to add all of this new info to the tree, but I'm so thankful and sort of feel at peace now that I finally know more about the family. Now if I can only find out what/where my great grandmother Agnes Barr Charlson is buried, it has to be near here. I'm going full steam thru the Joliet Library next week when it warms up a tad, hopefully I'll find her. She is definately nowhere in Ancestry, not even on a census. I wish the 1890 census had survived, she may have been on that one, but she's nowhere in any Joliet City directory after she married in 1887, before that she was listed.

I looked at all of the Scotish census.....thanks for sending me the info, it is greatly appreciated. Ancestry cannot print the actual document because the Scottish gov
won't give them permission. I did find the website
scotlandspeople.gov.uk and it is a pay as you go site, looks like there is a lot of info there. I'll probably pay for copies of some of the documents there. That site you referred me to....www.ayrshireroots.com is WONDERFUL !!
I found so much and am still finding even more, I spent 2 hours this morning on it....even found a James Richmond wed Agnes Calderwood in 1770....so most likely James Calderwood may be from Ayrshire. I'll work on him after I get this Barr-Richmond (I had Richman on Isabelle Barr Carney's death cert and also Richman on Agnes Barr Charlson's marriage cert but I'm SURE it's Richmond).

When I was on ancestry pulling up Agnes Richmond, I found a person with her family tree BARR/Pennington/Chidley/Walker
listed and BINGO....all of the entire Barr family I'm looking for !! It not only has the Barr's back to the 1700's but also to 2010, so I've found several relatives
alive now. This person is LindaBarr15 and I've sent her an inquiry just to know I'm out here but have received no reply as of yet, but she last posted 2 days ago so I know she's active in her research. She had everything on all of the Barr's in Europe but dead-ended when the 3 sisters left for the U.S. She never found anything on them after the last Scotland census they were on. She DID have all of the census and info on the boys....Hugh Boag Barr had moved to Birkenhead Cheshire County in England (1881 census age 27 ) and was living with 29 year old Margaret Barr (from Ireland) whom I believe is his wife. His brother, Robert Barr is in Lancashire, wed to Janet Wallace in 1884 and he died 2 Feb 1941 in the war. William Barr, husband of Agnes Richmond....his parents were Robert Barr born 1791 Ayrshire
and his mother Isabella Craig born 1796 Ayrshire. The parents of his wife, Agnes Barr were Hugh Richmond born 20 Dec 1802 in Ayrshire and her mother was Elizabeth Boag born 1795 Kilmarnock, Scotland. Thus Hugh Boag Richmond was named after them. The line leans completely to the UK, so I believe that Linda Barr (only info is "living") most likely is in the UK, her tree is entirely UK and Scotland. She had no info on any Barr's in the us and had the death dates of both parents, William Barr 1879 and Agnes 11 Nov 1883 in Scotland. That means the three Barr daughters came alone to the U.S. and 1883 was listed as the year, they must have left right after their mother died. Many of the Barr's in the UK are now in Middlesex, whivh is where many of my father's Thompson family is from....Surrey and Walton-on-Thames. That Ayrshire website that you sent me is a goldmine, now that I have many, many more names I'll be able to go back even further !! THANK YOU !!!

I'll let you know what else I find, I'm going on to that scotlandspeople.gov website. I had originally thought I could access Scotland info on the findmypast.co.uk that I subscribe to, but it doesn't have Scotland, only England & Wales. I DO have full access to the 1911 England census, so if you need anything pulled from there I'll be glad to do it for you....you have to pay for that subscription and I have full access to it. Again, thanx !! I'll let you know what I find. Agnes Barr, if she died in Joliet or Will county, and I strongly believe she did, would have died in testate so I'm going to check the probate packet & records and also see if there was a police investigation on the suicide, my hubby is a retired Joliet detective and is helping me find out where I can access those records if they exist. Take Care !!
Agnes came

Hi Kate !!

I know, the lawyer Barr is ALL over the place & had some very interesting travels to Europe with his family. Somehow I missed that he was Irish, but I did immediately know he wasn't the Barr family I was searching for because of his wife's name, but I was nosy and checked him out anyway.

I have wonderful news !! I actually woke up this morning and was still almost in shock! When you sent me the link for familysearch.org, even though I had been to that site a gazillion times before, for some reason I never ran thru the Barr names in the manner I tried last nite. BINGO !!! I actually found the family. Under the individual IGI records first I found Agnes Barr born 28 May, 1866, parents William Barr and Agnes Richmond (I had Richman, but close enough).
The birth year I had had for Agnes was 1869, but that too was close enough. Then I found Elizabeth Barr in the IGI born 16 Dec 1852. I had Dec 1859 from the census and again, close enough. The ringer was when I found Isabelle Barr in the IGI as born 26 May 1864. I had 26 May 1872 from her death cert as given by her daughter, Agnes Carney. All three women had William Barr and Agnes Richmond as parents. The chance of those two people having 3 daughters named Agnes, Elizabeth and Isabelle seems like they are the right family. THEN I found the Family Group Record. It shows Agnes Richmond born 1824 in Dalry, Ayr. Scotland and wed William Barr on 30 Jan, 1847 in Kilwinning, Ayr. Scotland.
Elizabeth, Agnes and Isabelle were all born in Kilwinning.
Another surprise was that there were 8 children total, a son born 1850 in Dalry, 1852 Elizabeth Boug Barr in Kilwinning, a son Hugh Richmond Barr born 16 Mar 1855 in Kilwinning, a female born & died 6 April 1857 in Dalry,
a son Davod Barr born 1859 in Kilwinning, a son Robert born 1860 in Kilwinning,Isabella born 26 May 1864 and finally Agnes born 28 May 1866 in Kilwinning .... I couldn't believe it !! It also lists the mother of Agnes Richmond as Elizabeth & her husband as only Mr. Richmond. There is another James Barr who wed a Richmond woman a week after Agnes and William were wed, from the same town & same parents, most likely their brother & sister. There were even some Christening dates. I'm STILL in shock, I've virtually spent years looking for these people and thanks to your lead I found them !! I cannot thank you enough !!
Now I have concrete names and dates to go by. I have not yet looked up the other siblings, it was late and I wanted to spend more time on it. Now maybe I will be able to find them in the U.S.....George & Jennie Barr are most likely the children of one of those brothers of Isabella, Elizabeth & Agnes. I STILL want to find out what happened to Agnes here in the U.S. but at least I'll be able to research her siblings who may have come here. Andrew Carney who married Isabella was from Scranton, PA. and I have found no marriage cert here nor birth certs for their 2 dauhters, Agnes ans May Carney, so maybe they were born in PA. Maybe Isabella was in P.A. first with her family ??

I'm going to write the LDS cor copies of the certs they have on film. I've ordered microfiche films here at the LDS Church in Joliet, but they do not have a copy machine and you have to hand copy everything. This makes it a whole new ball game because the British website I subscribe to has British Isles, including Scotland census and marriage and christening certs posted where I can get access.....I'm soooooo excited !! This was a goldmine for me, it's about time something broke !! The Charlson, Colson, ect. may fall more into place too now that I'll be able to trace the Barr's more closely...wish me luck !! Boy, Elizabeth Barr was 6 years off on her birth year....what a fibber !! Two or three I cam see, but 6 is intentional unless it was just a guess by her daughter. I can hardly wait to get on the UK site !! It helped me trace my father's grandfather's family back to the 1500's and his name was Thomas Thompson, there's a gazillion of them !! Thankfully the UK record system is very thorough and the BMD Register's office is VERY helpful. If you ever need to look up any British records, I know their system very well and will be more than happy to help. I can't believe how well you deciphered your g-grandfather's name. Oh, one more thing....I don't know who the Chicago area person is that was researching this board...I never heard from them. Again THANKS so very much, I'll again keep you posted !! Time to try the same with the Calderwood name, I know Elizabeth wed James in Scotland and the 4 children they had that died must have before they came to the US. It looks like they came to the US to take my grandmother Isabelle around 1888 when Agnes
died. My daughter has named her little girl Isabella after my grandmother and I'm Mary Belle, after my mother Mary and grandmother who they called Belle.

Mary
I think you should focus on the Jennie and her brother George if they are immigrants. Are you saing Jennie lived with her own family, or with your Barrs? Why don't you scan the photos of Jennie & Geo and get them up on ancestry. Let's see if the other Barr researchers and ID them.

Have you ever seen Jennie Barr on a census? Love that she never married.

******************************************************

The Wilmington IL George Barr - WWI draft - wife Mabel:
George Barr 10 Aug 1883 White Will, Illinois
"native born" - 1920 Census, wife Mabel, children Ruth & Richard.

George the lawyer is all over the place.
WoW !! Your great grandfather's name would have completely driven me insane trying to decipher. Ok, so I'm beginning to somewhat understand what they were doing with the naming system. If John was Emanuel's son, that makes sense to become Emanuelsson. Maybe he wasn't his son, so therefore kept the mother Fredricka's Charlson name. Why isn't Fredricka's last name Charlesdatter or Charlesdater? She isn't a son :-) So wouldn't she be Fredricka, Charles' daughter? These names are crazy.

I completely went thru all 29 pages of the Ethopia manafest. Also on board with James Calderwood but on different pages was Johannes Colson, age 27 and a mason!!
Also found John Anderson, age 21. On John Charleson's marriage cert a John Anderson was the witness....possibly these are all traveling together. I wish I had some kind of info exactly at least where these people came from in Scotland and Sweden, no one in my family ever knew. There are just soooooo many Annes Barr's and Agnes Richardson's
and John Colson, Charlson, ect.

The cousin, Jennie Barr must have been a relative to my great grandmother, Agnes Barr's father. Also her brother George. Jennie Barr from what I get from my cousin was about
the same age as my grandmother, born about 1888. The family I know lived around Wilton Center/ Manhattan (Will County)
Il. area. I have photos though of who my mother pointed out weeks before she died in 2005 as George Barr, ice skating
with a group of about age 20 something people, my grandmother included, in Delwood Park in Lockport, Illinois (Will county). Delwood park9 An actual park park...it used to be THE amusement park in it's day with roller coasters, boating, ect.) is about 40 mins south of Chicago in a more populated area. Wilton Center, where they supposedly lived, was farm, farm, farm area about 1/2 hour further from Chicago. There are many quarries and mines around there though, so a mason would have a short trek to work. Jennie Barr never married. I do not know if George did. I was wondering if they may have lived in or much nearer to Chicago since there were so many photos from Dellwood Park.
I got VERY tripped up and thought I was on to something by finding a George Barr from Wilmington/ Wilton Center area. He was a very prominent lawyer and traveled abroad quite often with his wife and son. His passport photo is on Ancestry, as well as a LOT of hif family info. I do not believe this is the George Barr I am looking for but it could be him...maybe 75% chance, I have found no concrete links as of yet. The George and Jennie Barr in the Delwood photos are always dressed to the nines, he has an expensive suit on in every photo and she always has a parasol and nice jewelry. A stone mason would never look that dapper.
My cousin could not ever tell me where they lived, but there are a LOT of Barr's in Wilton Center and my grandmother Isabelle Colson Charlson Calderwood or whoever she was married a Thomas Russell from Wilton Center, there are a gazillion Russell's there, even a Russell cemetery area.

Did I see you have Kelly lines? My husband's mother, Virginia Wicevic Denewellis (Denovellis) was the daughter of Anton Wicevic (Vicevich) and Helen Goodger. Helen's parents were Dennis P. Goodger and Mary E. Kelly, both from
Illinois and lived for a time near Chicago, actually Lockport (Will County) Il. Mary Kelly was the daughter of James & Honora Kelly. Gosh I wish these people would just leave the spelling of their names alone !! My husband's last name is Denewellis, but his father was born Denovellis. He and his brother (my father-in-law that is) just decided to Americanize their Italian Denovellis name. So 1/2 of my hubby's cousins are Denovellis and the other 1/2 Denewellis. The trouble is, no one ever bothered to tell
my father-in-law that the letter "W" does not exist in the Italian alphabet !! So, the laugh is on him :-)

So, I'm off to check your IGI list.....Barr is definately a difficult name to locate....I think Wednesday I'm going to head down to the Joliet Library. Maybe if I find Isabelle Barr Carney's obit it will state what town or area they came from. Again, I'll keep you posted !!

Mary

Why can't we see the Barrs on the Scotland censuses at ancestry? They should be there.

You posted Calderwood on the Ethiopa (ship) on a very old post I just saw somewhere ...

So the cousin was Jennie Barr and SHE had a bro named Geo? Did Jenny marry? Did Geo come to IL?

Charlie/John should have gone with Emanualsson (add an extra S) -- I don't think CH is common in SWE. Go to the IGI and put in Charlson -- 95% CARLSON. Lots of Fredricka and SWENSON is SVENSSON, lot of Emanuels.

My g-grandfather Anders Mansson (Andrew Monson) listed his father's name as "Mouse" phoentic of Mans, then crossed that out and put Johnsson ... his father was Mans Joensson(variation).

IGI - run thru the names
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?P...

Oh my !! The 1880 Ethopia (ship or country?) I've stumbled across the ship "Ethopia" somewhere...can't remember where...but Jennie Barr with them, they had a cousin that lived with them into their middle age, off and on, never married, and her name was Jennie Barr. My oldest cousin now the family matriarch remembers her well and there was also her brother George. Did you find the Ethopia info on Ancestry as a census...darn if I never found that, or was it the ship....I have World Membership at ancestry & also registered at the New York site to check the ships. Also full membership at the UK website findmypast.co.uk which is a great site. I've not used it yet for the Scottish-Swedish relatives yet, my father was from Surrey in the UK so I used it for my British ancestors, one of the best sites around.

Are you familiar with the darn naming system of the Swedes ?? John Charlson lists on his marriage cert as his parents being mother Fredricka Charlson and father Emanuel Swenson. Would a son of a Swenson take his mother's last name of Charlson? I've also noticed in several Joliet, Il. city directories that he seems to be inter-using last names. In 1888 he's John Charlson, but in 1889 there is a John Colson listed at the same address. In 1890-1891 that same address in Joliet, 1119 Benton St. lists a Charlie Charlson, and I've found other years where either C.A. Charlson and Charlie Colson are used....same address. Agnes Barr is listed at that same address for only one year, 1887, the year they were wed. I thought he may possibly be trying to elude someone, but maybe he just didn't speak English that well or the name wasn't particularly important. I figured the one on his marriage certificate, written in 3 places, along with the church marriage certificate also signed by a Swedish Luthern minister and also a 3rd paper, their permission to mary verifying their ages, was most likely the correct spelling, John Charlson. You would think his minister, whom I also found him living near in another town and the minister was also landlord for a John Anderson, who was witness to the marriage along with Bella Barr. Anderson was also a mason. I wish I could get my hands on the Masons lodge book, as John or Charlie or whoever he was is listed as a teamster and worked at the same stone quarry as Andrew Carney in Joliet. Carney was from Scranton, PA.

Like I said, I still don't understand their unusual naming tradition !! My husband's family is from Italy, so all of the women always kept their maiden name and did not use their husbands !! So, his grandmother, instead of being Felicita Denovellis went by Felicita (Phyllis) Brandolino.
That was a nightmare searching ship's lists as I didn't always have the maiden names.

Monday I'm calling the Cemetery to see what I can eek out of them, hopefully the plots hold several people. Then hopefully in another week I'll be able to search the Joliet Newspapers at the Library. The library keeps the microfiche machines on the 2nd floor and they use very old steam/hot water heat in the building and it't hotter than Haides, my husband went one time with me and refuses to go back because he was sweating so bad in January !! If I go, I plan to wear a sleeveless tank and bring plenty of ice water !! The little quirks we run into !!! If Agnes actually did committ suicide and it was in Joliet, there hgas to be a newspaper article somewhere. Maybe there's also a coroner report but I think I better look for a death date first. i just HATE not knowing where BOTH of my great grandparents are buried. I've been working on the fam,ily tree for about 4 years now and have just about 3,000 people linked so far. I have not downloaded it yet to Ancestry or GEDCOM, I just have a partial tree that I was tinkering with in the beginning that i sort of quit adding to, I put everything on Family Tree Maker on my computer.

I thank you VERY much for all of your help !! You're very quick at finding people !! I hope when I add my tree that it will help LOTS of others in their research. I've found my father's family back to the 1700's but my mother's family is stuck at this darn wall with good 'ole Charlie Colson or John Charlson or whoever he is. James Calderwood was a mason also, but he dissappeared into thin air after 1900 also and the Cabell County resources I've stretched thin. I may have to contact a researcher in WV. I went thru EVERY Cemetery there and here.....he's nowhere !!

I'll let you know what I find....Thanx !!

Don't get hung up on the Charlson vs. Colson, or even the "John" given name. Charlie Colson is what he used in the states. It's the Swedish naming system - he should have been Emanuelsson ... but at that time many chose different names or their mother's names.

Parents' Geo Barr & Agnes Richardson
Elizabeth Barr Calderwood (Dec 1859)
both she & James immig & Married 1883 (1900 census)
Agnes Barr born about 1869 SCOT
Isabelle Barr Carney 1870 - married Carney 1901

**********************************************************
2 interesting tidbits - don't get hung up on ages:

1881 > September > 21 > State of Georgia > Image 6
Elizabeth Barr 23 (1858)
Isabella 7 (1874)

1880 > October > 18 > Ethiopia > Image 2
Mrs. Agnes Barr 37
Agnes 14 (1866)
Jennie? 11 (1869)
Eliza 10 (1870)

1883 > May > 16 > Ethiopia > Image 2
James Calderwood, 22, Mason (!)

Thanks for the cemetery tip.....it's located right here in town and I was able to phone them and get grave #'s and locations, but I never thought to ask who purchased the graves (for Belle and Andrew Carney) nor if anyone else was buried in same plot. My Aunt, Elizabeth Russell Schultz, her husband, and several other Russel's are buried there. It is a HUGE Cemetery and there are people on staff there all day....I'll give them a ring. Sort of cold and snowy to be lugging around in a cemetery right now, so the phone method will be best. When it warms up, I'll take a run over there too. There are several Barr family members buried in a teeny cemetery in a small town near Manhattan / Elwood Illinois near Wilton Center Il. about 1/2 hour from me. Don't think it's staffed, very old. I know from my cousins that several Barr's are there, if I can't get anyone there by phone, I can run down there too, it's not so large that the entire cemetery can't be easily covered. That won't show unmarked plots, but maybe the Will County Historical society can point me to who has the info. Around here, a tiny town called Coal City not far from Wilton Center has an unbelievable amount of info on obits and other Historical Will County info, even more than the Joliet Library. I've dealt with them by phone and they have faxed me obits for free before. They are an absoute dream to work with. Anyway, thanks again....I'll get going on this !!

Hi Kate,

You found exactly the correct Belle Colson Russell, my grandmother, my mother's mother. Isabelle May Colson (actually Charlson...I'll explain)Calderwood wed my grandfather Thomas Russell on 23 Sept. 1908 in Joliet, Illinois. On their marriage cert it lists the bride as Isabelle (Calderwood) Colson. What happened there is, when Isabelle's mother died (bet 1888-1900) then Isabelle was then raised by her mother's sister, Elizabeth Barr Calderwood and her husband James. She was never adopted, thus the Colson Calderwood on her marriage cert.
In 1943, Isabelle for some reason needed a copy of her birth cert. The wonderful Will County clerk, unable to locate one, issued her a delayed birth certificate and for some unknown reason Isabelle told the clerk her father was Charlie Colson, born in Sweden, a stone mason and age 30.
She listed her mother as Agnes (nee Barr)Colson. Agnes' 1st cousin, Mae Carney, daughter of Isabelle and Andrew Carney, attested to and signed the delayed birth cert. as witness.
Agnes Barr had two sisters, Elizabeth Barr Calderwood and Isabelle Barr Carney, all born in Scotland. So her father was Swedish (my cousins remember an older relative, Jennie, as being from Sweden who was related to the husband of Agnes Barr. Isabelle Colson was born 24 Jan, 1888. For years I looked for a marriage cert. for Agnes Barr and Charlie Colson. Will Couty, Joliet, had no records anywhere, and I spent hours looking thru their books.
Then, I wrote IRAD at Northern Illinois University who hold Will county records. They found an Agnes Barr, married on 19 May 1887, 8 months before my grandmother was born, in Joliet, Illinois, to a John Charlson. He had listed his age as 29 (b 1861) in Sweden, the son of Emanuel Swenson and Fredricka Charlson. The bride, Agnes Barr listed her mother's maiden name as Agnes Richardson. Bingo. I had previously obtained the death certificate of Isabelle Barr Carney, wife of Andrew Carney (both buried here in Joliet in the Russell plots). Isabelle Carney's death certificate listed her mother's maiden name as Agnes Richardson and father George Barr. So Agnes Barr really wed John CHARLSON, not Charlie Colson. My mother had always told me my grandmother's maiden name was Calderwood !! What a mess!!
Agnes Barr was 19 when she wed John, so she would have been born about 1869 and she lists Scotland on her marriage cert.

I have been to the cemeteries in Joliet where they (the ones I've found so far) and Agnes Barr Charlson nor her husband are buried there. The census you found for 1910 for Belle Russell is coirrect. The wed Thomas Russell 23 Sept. 1908 (I have the certs from Will county & church rectory)and gave birth to her son, James Charles Russell was born 20 Jan. 1909, 4 months later. This was my mother, Mary Jane Russell's brother. Isabelle's midwife at the birth as signed on his birth certificate was Elizabeth Calderwood, the sister of Agnes Barr Colson Charlson....whew !!
The 1920 census is correct, Belle Russell age 32 living in Joliet, Il.
The 1910 census for "Relle" Carney is correct also, Relle being Belle or Isabelle Barr Carney born in Scotland. Both she and Andrew Carney are buried together here in Joliet, their daughter Mae Carney married Dr.John Muncy and they both are buried in California. The other daughter, Agnes, I cannot find any more info on yet except she was born in Joliet abt. 1903. Will county again, has no birth record.
The census lists both of Belles parents, Agnes Richman Barr and her husband as both being from Scotland. I believe Agnes, Isabelle and Elizabeth all came over together with their parents, but I have found no passenger list.

The 1900 census, Lizzie Calderwood is also correct. "Lizzie" Elizabeth Barr Calderwood and her husband James (also a stone mason and good friend and work mate of Andrew Carney)Calderwood took Isabelle Charlson to raise as a Calderwood and moved to Huntington, Cabell, WV. between 1888 and 1900 after Agnes Barr Charlson committed suicide.
As I have said, by 1910, Isabelle was back in Joliet and married to Russell with a new baby that "Lizzie" Elizabeth Calderwood helped deliver in Joliet. James Calderwood is MIA, as well as John Charlson, Charlie Colson ?? and of course Agnes Barr Charlson....can't find any of them. Maybe I need to go to the cemetery offices and see if they may be buried on the plots of another Russell or Barr in Joliet.
I do have the lot numbers of the graves I know of. Another mystery is the 1900 census listing "number of living children 1" who would be my grandmother Isabelle and # of deceased children 4....Since it shows they came to the U.S. in 1883, were these 4 born in Scotland or in the Us between 1883 and 1900...and what happened to them ?? Another mystery. I can find NOWHERE where Elizabeth or James Calderwood died, I've checked all of the Joliet Cemeteries and Huntington, WV. cemeteries....they've just vanished !!
I'm about pulling my hair out, this is really a mystery !!

If you EVER find even one little tidbit, it would be greatly appreciated. In 1888 Joliet had about 10 newspapers, so I'm going to go look on the microfiche to see if I can find word of Agnes suicide or obit sometime between 1888 and 1900....maybe she didn't really die, but abandoned her child. All I have if family hearsay from my mother who told me her grandmother, Agnes, died in childbirth of her mother, Isabelle Calderwood....neither of which was correct. My mom died never knowing her mother's real name or who her grandparents really were. Sad.

The contract expire and it's killing me.

I have ancestry & footnote.com -- nothing.

I'd phone those non-catholic cemeteries in Joliet and play dumb. Ask for Agnes Colson -- schmooze them.

Hi Kate,

I know, Will County is near impossible to work with. I personally went down to their office, looked thru their books and also requested the clerk to look for me. She found nothing, on almost ALL of the names I needed info on. I had much better luck writing IRAD, the University of Illinois research center, who promptly sent me several certs I had been looking for and they were VERY pleasurable to deal with...and FREE, unlike Will County's $14.00 ripoff, they ONLY give certified copies, which I do not need. They are difficult at best to deal with, could care less, and are unorganized, I've never found any other office with so many missing or "misplaced" certificates. I've learned not to waste my time any more in Joliet.
Needless to say, the Colson family still eludes me, and I only know Agnes died someime between 1888-1900. My next sojurn is to the Joliet Public Library to search newspapers,
she had to go somewhere !! Thanks for your info, it is most appreciated....

Mary

Re: Thomas and Charles COLSON

Hi,
I was looking for a Charles or Charlie Colson who had lived in Joliet, Illinois in 1888, he was (I thought) my grandmother's father as listed on Isabelle Mae Colson's delayed (issued in 1943 and attested to by her cousin). His wife, Agnes Barr had died between 1888 and 1900 (no 1890 census). Charlie Colson was a stonemason and is listed in the Joliet, Illinois city directories on Ancestry for 1884, 1885, 1886, 1887 and 1888....then poof....gone. I could not find any marriage certificate until I found an Agnes Barr wed James Charleson in May 1888 in Joliet. The names of her parents matched as did the address in Joliet. Three documents as well as the Evangelical Lutheran Church records listed her as wed James Charleson....so my grandmother never (or hid) her father's real name. But Charlie Colson was a neighbor of theirs across the street on Colburn Ave. and worked at the same quarry in Joliet and apparently lived with his brother. He was listed as age 30 in 1888 on my grandmother's birth cert if he somehow figures in....still a mystery. No death cert. found anywhere for Charlie or Charles Colson. My grandmother was found living in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia in 1900 with the sister of her mother, Elizabeth Calderwood and her husband James. I have thoroughly searched the WV and Joliet & surrounding cemeteries for Charlie to no avail...still don't know where my grandmother got his name to use since she was an infant when her father dissappeared.
Sorry I can't help more !! Charlie's brother lived with him in Joliet, Will County, Il.

We are talking about the same family...Yes my ggrandmother Mary Laura Colson (she was known as Laura) married a Oscar Kirby(later died) & remarried a Linton.

According to the 1870 census, Mary Colson, had the following siblings: George, Abraham, Laura,John, Robert, Regina, Virginia. On the 1880 census she married a Thomas Dumas & lived in Lilesville.
According to the death certficate for my ggrandmother Laura (Mary Laura Linton)& Robert father was Buck (William/Bill Martin. He was white & I was told that my grandfather Abraham Kirby aka Bush (laura linton son) stated he owned a store. Abraham Kirby belonged to the Red Hill Baptist church however, buried at Rocky Mount church in Ansonsville.

Your ggrandfather william Colson sister, Laura lived in Connecticut. I am in close relations with her niece who took care of her in Stamford Connecticut. My uncle also visited her when she was in the nursing home. Unfortunately I did not meet her.
Robert Colson your ggggranfather had approx. 17 children from Nannie Drake & Hannah Kirby

William/Buck Martin I believe (can't confirmed) is William Hough Martin who died in 1884. I hope to confirmed that from a Steve Bailey, Anson county genealogist to research it for me

I believe Robert, Mary Laura(who went by Laura)& siblings were part native american Indians. I believe Mary colson Dumas, their mother was part indian

Y-DNA Study

Are you a male with the surname of Colson/Collson/Coulson/Colston and wondered how you might be related to others with the same surname? Is your Y-DNA that of the Celts or Anglo-Saxons? Now is the perfect time to discover the origin of the DNA that makes you a male. Family Tree DNA has just announced a drastically reduced price of only $119 for the Y-DNA37 test (37 markers are required to have a thorough understanding of relatedness) and this price will remain ONLY until 31 December 2009. I paid over $249 for this same test a few years back. Don't pass up this opportunity to understand the genetic origin of your surname.

Does anyone have a connection to Walter Colson who married Elizabeth Alice Mathews (Mathers) in South Africa.
Walter would have been born in approximately 1850. They lived at the Stone Cottage of Diocesan College, Rondebosch (Bishops) where he worked as a caretaker. Further to that the family were members of St Pauls Anglican Church, Rondebosch. It is understood that the family had connections to France, USA and also the UK and Sweden, but we have no further information. Any information would be gratefully appreciated.
