Kennedy Family Bloodline

I understand that the Irish-American Colton's are pretty close to the Kennedy family as JFK's cousin was Claire Colton and not to mention if one google's Joseph B Colton there is an obvious connection between Irish Colton's and this kennedy bloodline. I understand that both of these bloodlines come from County of Wexford and County of Donegal in Ireland, can someone give me some more information with citations on this?

I'm also descended from George Colton who was married in 1644 to Deborah Gardner. My lineage goes, George, Ephriam, Isaac, Moses, Reuben, Clinton, Reuben, Elbert to my great grandmother, Reta Colton. I've been able to figure that George's parents were James & Jane (Woolworth) Colton.

Hi all - as far as I was aware the name Colton in Ireland originated from the Irish O'Comhaltain from Donegal - the name is mentioned in the Annals of The Four Masters which were written between 1632 and 1636. The annals were a written history of early Ireland. Found this extract - Ua Ceallaigh, lord of Ui-Fiachrach of Ard-sratha, was killed by the Ui-Comhaltain, on the island of Loch-Laeghaire. Ui Comhaltain would be the plural, in other words the Colton clan. Angie

Mr. Gray?
Reviewing your family tree and tree pages, I find Warren J Calton a relative of yours and mine. One entry indicates he married a F.R. Gibbon in Coldwater, however that entry indicates it was a Warren A Colton. The next entry indicates Warren married a Kate and that it was indeed Warren J and it was his first marriage. Then married Sylvia who would be my great grandmother. Wondering where and how you obtained information. I am researching for my father. Thanks for any help you have with the Warren Colton tre.

Hello -- I'm researching the COLTONs you mentioned. They are not my direct line but they do fit into my GILLETT & Related Families research. John Feneley Colton, son of John Colton & Jane Feneley, married Clara Gillett. She was his second wife ... his first being Mary Hattie McCutcheon who died 06 OCT 1881.

Are you related to this line through John Feneley Colton? Or through one of his siblings?

obit for Lawrence Colton, born 1930, died 1948 Kansas

Miltonvale Record, Cloud County, Kansas, Apr. 15, 1948, page 1:
TRAGIC DEATH
Tragedy struck at the R.I. Nemnich farm in the Lamar community early Friday afternoon, when Lawrence Colton who has been employed at the Nemnich farm, received injuries in an accident which led to his death that night.
Mr. Nemnich and Lawrence had been grinding, when it became necessary to disengage the belt that drives the grinder from the tractor. This had been done and the grinder continued to run on its own momentum. As its speed seemed to be nearly down, Lawrence picked up the belt and was pulling on it to stop the running of the grinder. As he did so in some manner he became entangled in the belt which threw him against the grinder with resulting injuries from which he did not recover. He was taken to St. Joseph hospital, Concordia, where it was found he had a fractured skull, right arm broken and other injuries. He died about 9:30 that evening without regaining consciousness.
Lawrence Lee Colton, son of Victor and Florence Colton, was born in Delphos, Kansas, May 7, 1930; he departed this life April 9, 1948, at St. Joseph's hospital, Concordia, Kansas, at the age of 17 years, 11 months, and 2 days.
Lawrence spent most of his life in Delphos, Kans., having attended both grade and high schools there. He, with his parents, moved to the Lamar Community about three years previous to his death. He was an active 4-H member in this community, and a faithful attendant of the Lamar Sunday School. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Delphos, Kansas. His friendly, happy disposition won him many friends and his ready smile endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. His untimely death leaves an aching void that time alone will mercifully heal.
He leaves to mourn their loss, his father and mother; five brothers: Carroll, James, Max, Ivan and Byron; five sisters: Margaret, Althea, Doris, Audrey, and Bernita, all of the home; his fiancee, Miss Bessie Nemnich of Lamar to whom he had planned to be married in June. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bellows of Delphos, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. P.J. Putz of Tacoma, Washington, four aunts, and five cousins. Added to this is a number of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church in Delphos, with Lloyd Taylor, pastor of the Miltonvale Christian church, officiating, assisted by Rev. H.G. Feldmann, pastor of the Delphos Methodist church. Music was furnished by a quartet from Lamar: Mrs. Loris Motter, Mrs. T.A. Cooper, R.H. Stewart, and Reuben Thomas, accompanied by Mrs. Reuben Thomas at the piano. Pall bearers were Keith Willard, Darrell Lee Cooper, Donald Lee Yowell, Frank and Max McCready, and Bill Baldock. Interment was in Bethel cemetery.

Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Kansas, Apr. 15, 1948, page 1:
LAWRENCE COLTON DIES OF INJURIES BY MACHINE
Lawrence Colton, 17-year-old Miltonvale young man, was fatally injured Friday afternoon at the R.A. Nemnich farm where he was caught in a revolving belt while using a feed grinder. Lawrence, who was employed at the Nemnich farm, was helping to grind feed when the belt attached to the tractor and grinder started to slip. The tractor was stopped to adjust the belt and while the grinder was still in motion Lawrence took hold of the belt. He was caught into the belt, wound up in it, carried along and thrown against the barn and tractor. His companions freed him from the belt, and he was rushed to the St. Joseph hospital in Concordia where he died Saturday night at 10 o'clock without regaining consciousness.
Colton suffered a fractured skull, compound fracture of the upper and lower arm, dislocated hip and internal injuries.
death of Henry Colton in California, 1906

Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Kansas, June 22, 1906, page 3:
Henry Colton a Suicide
The cause of Henry Colton's sudden death at Los Angeles was much of a mystery to his many friends here and the cause for taking his own life still remains a mystery, as there seems to have been no jangle in his business affairs of family relations. Mr. Colton on the day of the act took a bath, dressed up in his best and sat with the family for a time. During this period Lester observed something strange in his father's actions and asked if he was ill. Mr. Colton replied that he did not feel well. A little while later he returned to the bath room and cut his own throat. It is reported that his struggles attracted his folks and they broke in the door. Physicians were summoned, and Mr. Colton lingered three days before succumbing to his self-inflicted injuries.

Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Kansas, February 3, 1955, page 5:
Lucretia Agnes Colton Grinage
Lucretia Agnes Colton was born near Blairstown, Iowa, March 20, 1880, and quietly passes away at her home in Glasco, January 27, 1955. She was the youngest daughter of ten children of Henry and Esther Clark Colton, who grew to manhood and womanhood. Her twin brother, Leonard, died in infancy, and the twin sister of another brother died in early years.
About 1884, the Colton family came to Kansas to make their home on a farm in the Bethel neighborhood. There Lulu, as she was known, attended school and grew to womanhood.
On March 15, 1904, she was united in marriage to William P. Grinage.
obit for James Henry Colton, born 1863 Indiana, died 1937 Kansas

Delphos Republican, Ottawa County, Kansas, Oct. 21, 1937, page 1:
James Henry Colton, age 74 years, one month and 24 days, died at the Concordia Hospital, Tuesday, Oct. 12th, 1937. He was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., August 14, 1863. At the age of three years, he came to Blairtown, Iowa with his parents, and lived there 17 years. In 1884, the family moved to Delphos, Kansas, settling in the Bethel neighborhood. He was the eldest son of Henry and Esther Colton.
He was united in marriage to Lydia Bates, of Delphos, Kansas, Feb. 22, 1899. To this union four children were born: Neva Clark and Victor Colton of Delphos, Kansas; Mrs. Ethel Kibler and Miss Mildred Colton, of Puyallup, Washington.
He leaves besides his children, four sisters and four brothers: Ed and Lester Colton, Adelia Bates, and Lulu Grinage, of Glasco; Eva Mantz of Norton, Kansas; George Colton of Los Angeles, Lawrence Colton of Long Beach, Calif.; and Nell Throckmorton of Delphos, with whom he had made his home the last 12 years of his life. Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death: Cynthia Holbert, Laura, a twin of Lawrence, and Leonard, twin of Lulu, who died in Iowa. He also leaves 14 grandchildren.
He bore his years of suffering patiently, always endeavoring to cheer others, who were unfortunate, along the way. He loved to read items of interest to shut-ins, and tried to keep busy up to the limitations of his physical endurance. He loved the men's Bible class, and rarely missed a meeting. One of the happy moments of his last illness was when he received a beautiful bouquet from this class. He was appreciative of any little kindness shown him. Besides his relatives, he leaves many friends who will hold his memory dear.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. McClellan at Presbyterian church, on Tuesday afternoon of last week, members of his class acting as pallbearers. He was laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery.

There does not appear to be firm information, but it appears that George Colton likely came over on "Lion's Whelp" a busy ship between England and the colonies at the time. He arrived in Longmeadow, Mass in 1644, having married at about this time, as a young man, best guesses being that he was born between 1910 and 1920.

Born in later 1800's, is from Brodie Austria, lived in Canada, married Lilly Dubyna also born in Brodie Austria, lived in canada, lived in Edson Alberta, Canada around 1920, gave birth to son, Paul Bolton there. Also had a son Mike, two daughters jeanne and Marj. The family was split up, the children in foster homes, Paul and Jeanne were raised at Westrose Alberta by Theresa Rich. Louis spent time in a prison in eastern canada? Toronto or winnipeg. When released he stepped in front of a train and was killed. Lilly Dubyna/colton remarried (Wallter) and lived in British comumbia, I believed she had at least one or two more children. Louis and Lilly's children were reunited and changed their surname to Bolton.

Here are some links which include some history on the Colton name as well as an English coat of arms -

http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.c/qx/colton-coat-arms.htm

http://www.chriscolton.co.uk/CoatArms.htm

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~coltoninfo...

The name Colton is also noted in the Domesday book dating back to 1085 in England.

I think it's safe to say that any Irish Coltons probably can trace some lineage to that.
Hi there. Thanks for your reply. I should have been more specific in my post though.

Quartermaster George Colton was born sometime between 1610 and 1620 in England and immigrated to the US. He is the ggggg-grandfather (add a few more 'great's') of a huge number of American Coltons. I should have been more specific in saying that I'm wondering if anyone has found out anything about his origins back in England.

Thanks!
Noi

Hi, I have a George Colton married into one of the branches of my tree. If this George links to your tree then I can at least give you up modern links to England. Could you give me more details please and I will see if I can find anything. Regards, Jo.

Hello, I'm interested in the George Colton that you mentioned as I'm missing one from my family. Mine was probably born around 1820-30 and came to Canada about 1843. He appears on the 1851 census but cannot be found after that. Can you give me any more information on your George Colton?? Tks Wayne

My parents visited England and the supposed town of their origin a number of years ago. I want to say it was Colville, but I may be mistaken. My brother might know for sure.
