SARAH E COLVILLE

Searching for descendants/relatives of Robert Colville and Sarah E Colville. She was born 4 MAY 1844 in HOROM, KENT, ENGLAND. They had a son, Frank Colville, who was born 26 APR 1872 in Michigan. I find her mentioned in Flint, Michigan, city directories until about 1908 (?). Resident city and state for Robert, Sarah, and Frank is listed as Flint, Michigan for many years in the US Census. I could not find more information on Frank. The last Flint city directory in which I found him listed his address as the Dresden Hotel. Previous censuses listed him living with his parents. It could be that he never married.

Searching for Samuel Colvill bn 1827, can not find any past family for him. He married Jane Hammond 1849 in Grant County,KY. They lived in Pendleton County 1860 census with 7 children. Jane disappeared in 1870 census-what happened?
Next he appears in Fleming County & marries Martha Jane Thacker Thompson and from this marriages 1871 is my G-father, Samuel H Colvill. I do have pictures, tho not too clear, of Sam 1827 & Martha. Thanks, pjharless@tampabay.rr.com

Hello Electric and other Colvill researchers I also have a Colvill I am trying to trace. Perhaps she is related to your Elizabeth. I would like to contact Don but can't find how to. My Mary Colvill was born c1744 in Kent. She married 1767 in Chatham and died Gillingham 1803. Her marriage bans were listed in Staplehurst. Can you help me or put me on to someone who can.

lleearcher@iprimus.com.au

Although the village is long gone, (the church remains in it's original location as does the cemetery) the name Colville Township remains as the legal identification for the township.

Although some records state incorrectly that the Colvilles came to Benton County (Washington County at the time) in 1836 they actually came earlier. Joseph Colville and his Cowan inlaw came to this area on a scouting mission as early as 1830. The families actually moved here during the spring of 1832. They homesteaded on acreage west of present day Lowell and near Mt. Hebron Church and Cemetery (both are on the National Registery). The Cowan inlaws took care of Anna when she became infirmed, and she is buried in their plots at Goad Springs Cemetery. We recently erected a memorial stone in her honor as being one of the early female settlers.

Clarification: Joseph was the husband of Anna Emily Colville. Andrew Gamble Colville was Joseph and Anna's first born son. Anna never remarried. Samuel and my ancestor Mary Louisa Colville McDaniel were brother and sister. Samuel came home from the War wounded, worn out and sickly. He died later leaving his wife Malissa Ford Colville a widow and his children without a father. After the War the area suffered badly. My ggrandmother described the area as "nothing left but chimneys". Joseph Coville, Sr. was a major in during the American Revolution and participated in the Battle of King's Mountain.

Joseph and Anna Emily Colville's son Andrew was killed along with his father while panning for gold on the Feather River. After the bodies were pulled from the water, they were buried in an unmarked grave nearby. This occured on December 9th, 1849. Both were part of the Fayetteville Gold Mining Company that left in March 1849 and joined Cherokees near Tahlequah, IT. Their destination was the gold fields of California. Joesph planned to pan for gold until he got enouth to return to Arkansas and continue farming his acreage.

Samuel Colville is buried in the Mt. Olive Cemetery west of Lowell and just south of the Mt.Hebron Church and Cemetery. Samuel served with my ancestor in Brig. Gen. Stand Watie's 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles. My ancestor married Louisa Colville, daughter of Joseph and Anna Emily Gamble Colville. Joseph and son Andrew were killed by Indians along the Feather River near present day Sacramento, CA. Anna is buried in the Goad Springs Cemetery just west of Lowell.

I am the great granddaughter of Robert Colville married to Martha Taylor. They had four daughters Mary, Ada (my grandmother), Hazel and Mabel and one son William. Robert and Martha left Beaverton, Ontario in the early 1900's for Saskatchewan where they homsteaded along with at least one of the other Colville boys, Mom called him uncle Jake probably James. All of Robert and Martha's children are gone but there are descendants from the girls in Saskatachewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario that I am aware of. The son died unmarried in the 1940's.

Hi yes I have an ancestor William Colvin that came from Co. Antrim in 1818 and his wife Letitia (Smith) and 3 children came 2 years later. they lived in NY for a few years and then moved to Raisin, Lenawee Co., Michigan. I have been trying to find information about them in Ireland. Supposedly their name was changed somewhere along the line from Colville to Colvin. This is per the information I have found by his son James B. Colvin. I have found nobody that is or has any idea of who this branch of Colvin's is. I would love to find out anything you might have on them.

Hope to hear from you soon
Lynn Colvin

Hi there. Nancy was married to Seth Moor. They got married in Carroll, New York in 1828. He was born in 1796, New York, he passed away 1878 in Pennsylvania. She was born in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co. New York. I have Seth Moore's death certificate~~he is my ggg-grandfather.Her father is Bejamin Covell, Mother is Sybill Durkee. I see where you have Nancy Covell being born in Coldspring, so maybe my information on this is in correct. Hope this helps. Seth has been more difficult to track down. Thank you, Sandy Becraft

I think you might be talking about two different William Colvilles here. The William James Colville that was married to Mabel Miles of Dayton, Ohio was born in August 1880. He died on 8 May 1913 in Toronto, Ontario...I'm not sure he ever lived in Dayton, Ohio, but Mabel moved back there with her children after his death.

To: Don Colvill
Don, I was surprised to see you most recent posting here in Rootsweb as I had tried to contact you on a previous occasion. However, I would be most interested to see the Reference; information passed on to you concerning the Colvill Family, I am up against the proverbial brick wall with my Colvill Family once again and about to quit as I am in my 80's (years that is)and can't take much more of thid excitement and disappointment. This has not been an easy search let me tell you, as an example I have had to hand out to two different Genealogists when I hit that wall early on in my search, and now again in my most recent search, both of these people threw their hands up in the air and said sorry but I can't help you any more. I was going to say to hell with all of this when I went to Rootsweb for a last look and found your notations on the Colvill Family history from a Grand Mother, boy I wish I had one of those people. I'm stuck in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland, with my G.G.G. Grandfather James Colvill (b 1745 - d 1776) who was a Miner there (Iron & Coal). He Married twice once to an Isobel Edwards (m 1762) who produced 8 children, 5 died. He then married a Helen Thomson (m 1772 / 73) who had 2 children one a James (b 1774) my G.G. Grand father who was a Royal Navy Veteran, wounded (r 1817 - d 1832), and a Sister Christian (b 1776). I should mention here that my Family Name has gone throug a name cycle from Colvill, Colvin, Colvil, to its form now for the last 4 generations. If you have any relationship to these people
I would appeciate hearing from you as I cannot find any further connections, going back wards that is) to this Family (from Torrybur, Fife). My e-mail address is Jalcov@shaw.ca in Edmonton, Canada.

But to make a long story short, 1000 years you
say, wow. Yes it has been that long, or more actually as our foundings go back to Normandy and beyond. I would like to read that book of your Grand Pa's though if at all possible. Give me a call will you, that book sure sounds interesting.

I am looking for information on the Colvill Family of the Town of Torryburn, Fife Scotland. In particular the Parents of one James Colvill born in 1745 (where abouts unknown at the moment), in life he was a miner and in old age a Sock (Stokings) Manufacturer, married to a Isobel Edward b 1762 in Saline, and later to a Helen Thomson b 1772 / 73 in the Town of Torryburn and died there in 1776. However, it is unknown where James was born or where, and who his Parents and siblings may have been.

Re: Colvilles of Frederick & Washington COs VA - 18th Century
John,

There is one other thing regarding the Vance family.

I am researching two 'groups' of Vance. One group of early PA, the other of early VA.
Up until today I had no reason to believe that these two Vance families were connected, though both have descendants (several generations later) who end up in East TN and intermarry with 'my' Evans clan.

Vance Group #1 is the Patrick Vance family.
This Patrick was the brother of John VAnce and both found in early Cumberland>Franklin CO PA. Both believed to be from Ireland. Parents unknown.
This Patrick Vance marr 1st (aft 1764 when Patrick was listed as Freemen) to Sarah Taylor = my interest in him.
Sarah (Taylor) Vance was the sister of 'my' ancestor Andrew Taylor.
Patrick then marr 2nd (bef. 16 Apr 1787) to Elizabeth Houtson. It seems more are researching the children of Patrick & Elizabeth.
Patrick Vance and his 2nd wife Elizabeth Houston removed to Knox CO, TN. He died there bet. Aug 1801 - Apr 1803 (Will written & prob)
'My' Andrew Taylor also removed from Cumberland CO PA to Knox CO, TN.
Both families lived near the Knox/Jefferson CO lines.
As you know, this is where 'our' Evans clan migrated to = Samuel & Ann (Colville) Evans family.

Vance Group #2 is the Colville/Evans/Vance "clan" of early Orange>Frederick COs of Virginia. Members of this group migrated to Washington CO, VA, and many moved on to Knox/Jefferson COs (area) in East TN.
As you also know, 'our' elder Samuel & Ann (Colville) Evans had children and descendants who marr into the VA Vance family, and it seems that there are other connections further back (between all of these families).
It should also be noted here that it is most probable that our elder Samuel Evans (h/o Ann Colville) was the son of William and Dorothy Evans.
Side NOTE: Many list this Dorothy as Moore, but there is no reason to believe that rumor. I know where it started.... no basis to it. The Moore surname does figure into the puzzle further back in early PA!
BUT, back to the Virginia family...
it is also most probable that William & Dorothy Evans of Frederick CO VA had a son Robert. This would be Robert Evans who marr to Mary Hoge. If you take a look at the early Orange>Frederick CO VA records you will see that the Hoge/Hogue surname is of great interest to us in our reserach.
Also adding that we now know that a descendant of 'our' elder Samuel Evans (h/o Ann Colville) is a 37 DNA marker match to a descendant of Robert Evans and Mary Hoge.

I am not a Vance researcher, but suspect that they do hold clues to our Colville and Evans puzzle. They have to! This has been running around in my head for the last year or so.

So today, after your response to my Colville post, I decided to take a look at the Vance DNA Project. It had been awhile since I had. It seems, from what is now posted to their results page, that the Patrick Vance Grp (Grp #1 above) is connected to the Colville/Evans/Vance (Grp #2 above). It seems that there are DNA participants from each of these families participating in their project. (These participants are listed in group #1 on the DNA Vance Results page)

You can imagine my delight when I saw this.
I do not know who these Vance DNA participants are, but would love for them to contact us.
I am also wondering how (exactly) the early Patrick & John Vance of Cumberland CO PA connect to the Samuel Vance & Sarah Colville family of early VA!?

Hey John, GREAT to hear from you!
Hope you have been well.

The Colvilles are a puzzle for us.

Still not sure where they all fit, however, last Fall I did start to 'pull' some of the VA records for the Evans, Colvilles, and collateral families. Though not a lot of time invested (to date) some interesting things are already starting to emerge, but, as always, real life set in, and I had to set aside the genealogy for the holidays. I do hope to get back to these colonial VA records as time permits. Perhaps this Spring.

Whilst 'pulling' these earlier VA records, and adding some of my correspondence with others, I did happen upon some Vance records, but the Vance families were not my immediate focus. Yes, the Vance marr into the Colville line at several levels, but right now my focus is more on the Evans & Colvilles. I only have so much room in my head for dead people at any one time!

As you know, the VA Vance family "trees" contain many errors. So many common names, and it seems that folks have confused the 'Vance' family units. Pretty much the same problem with our Colville clan. The good news is that this file that I have started does indicate some of the connections ( at least with the Evans and Colvilles). It just needs a lot more work, and a lot more research. One point that should be mentioned... The Vance were also involved with the Hoge family (!= one of our Evans puzzles!) Please see the record pulled from my early VA evans file (pasted below).

I can send you this early VA Evans file, though I am not sure if there is much regarding your Vance clan. You might be able to use some of the information, or ... (?)you may be able to add to it(?).

Let me know and I will forward directly.

Take care,
Debra

~*~*~*~*

NOTE: 17 Nov 1749 p. 58, Frederick County, Virginia Deed Book Series, VOL I, Deed Books 1, 2, 3, 4 1743-1758 (Abstracted), Compiled by Amelia C. Estelle Stewart King, Genealogical Publ. CO., Inc., 1980. Will of Rees Pritchard “to wife’s son John Evans, 260 acres of land. Rest of the estate to be divided between wife and five children as the law directs. Extrx: wife Elioner Pritchard. Wit: David Rees, Robert Richardson, Jenkins James [Jenkins bro-in-law of Elinor = Rees’ sister Elinor marr to Jenkins].”
SEE 1763 Pritchard will below
USE find command for ‘Pritc’, then see Colville record that mentions Samuel Pritchard living adj to them. Rees Pritchard seems to be the step father of John Evans, and Elinor/Eleanor his mother. Some researchers state that Rees Pritchard marr to Eleanor/Elinor/Elanor Evans 7 Jul 1743 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More research is needed.
PER one Pritchard researcher… “The son [John Evans] disappears from records and there aren't records that show what happened to him. Since the land he inherits goes back to his 1/2 brother Stephen Pritchard, without probate or sale records, a good guess is that he died without wife or issue. At the time of their marriage, the Prichard family was in Chester Co., PA, and after a VERY extensive search for John Evans, Sr., I have not found one that fits properly to be the husband of Elinor. Rees & Elinor were married in Philadelphia 1743. There are no orphan court records in Chester Co. for Evans,Jr. He does not show up in Chester Co, at all, and not in Frederick County VA other than the wills of Prichard & James.” “Rees & Elinor had children: Stephen, Sarah, Hannah, Mary, Ann.” It seems that Rees was Rees Jr. and the s/o Rees and Hannah Prichard. His (Jr.’s) siblings include Samuel Prichard who m. Margaret Weave, Elinor who marr to Jenkins James, Joseph who marr to Alice. “There is some evidence that Rees' widow MAY have been Jenkin James' sister - ie. Pritchard brother & sister (Rees & Elinor) married James brother & sister (Jenkin & Elinor). Widow of Rees Jr. Elinor MAY [then] have married Joseph Jones [see comments below] between 1758-1763.” “The Prichard siblings came to the area in the 1740's - Samuel & Rees did surveying, and settled there, selling the PA property completely by 1750's. Their house still stands.’
&
NOTE: PER "Some Old Homes in Frederick County Virginia" by Garland Quarles.... p. 72
The Colvin (Colville) - Jones House
No. 46
Valley Stream Farm Location: On Opequon Creek and Route 650 about a mile south of Cedar Creek Grade
...Yost Hite conveyed 60 acres of this tract on Opequan Creek to Joseph Colvin, the deed declaring Colvin was already at the date in possession of the land conveyed. (F.D.B. 1 - Page 68). The name of the purchaser of this land appears in records as Colvin, Colville, or Calwill.......
…. (journal of Philip Vickers Fithian, a Presbyterian preacher)... Among [visits] to one Colville; he is clerk for the society, raises the tune in the primative Presbyterian whine and roll...... (Fithian - page 18)....
.... identifies the Colville mentioned as James Colville, son of Joseph Colvin (Colville) ......
... will, proved May 2, 1758, Joseph Colwill (Colvin) devised all of his land to his son Andrew Colwill (F.W.B.2 - page 294); and on June 14, 1765, Andrew Colwill conveyed to Joseph Jones the tract on Opequan Creek purchased by Joseph Colwill from Yost Hite and divised by the will of Joseph Colwill to his son Andrew Colwill (F.D.B 10-14)....... in possession of Jones family.... for over 162 years.
It then goes on to discuss the Jones land. Jump forward in time to 1793 - Joseph Jones to sons Joseph Jr & James, then Jr to brother James. James Jones (1791-1874) married an Eleanor Marquis. Birth of this man doesn't quite work to be the child of Elinor Evans Prichard - She was already widowed with a child by 1743 (making her probably born 1710-1720 - add 40 years for childbearing, and she would not be having children after about 1760). Rees Pritchard was born about 1709, so she probably wasn't born much before him, although possibly much later. The point is…. Some say that Elinor marr a 3rd time to Joseph Jones.... I am now wondering if this Joseph JONES (the father of this record) possibly was the 3rd husband of Elinor (widow Evans) Prichard.
Side NOTE: Chester Co. PA Will book 2, page 24 #624 will dated 3 Dec 1735 proved 1 Mar 1737/38 John Evans Leg- wife Ellen & son John Leaves plantation & land in Willistown, about 110 acres, buildings, & improvements to oldest son John Evans. mentions loving wife Ellen and youngest son Amos Evans (when 21).
Dear Debra,

You sent me enormous amounts of high quality Evans research, and I worked nearly all of it into my family notes. THANKS!!!

At present, I am still digesting these Colville wills.

I sorted out the Colvilles as best I could. Many Colvilles and their in-laws had Kings Mountain connections, and I used Evans family data and infornmation about Kings Mountain vets to arrange a family framework to which I connected other details as they came up. I am fairly sure that most of my work is accurate, but it probably contains some errors that I do not want to post.

E-mail me at 11mitchell@mchsi.com if I can help you, and please keep me posted of your work with the Colvilles. (Have you tried yet to sort out the Vances?)

Sincerely,

J.Mitchell

Colvilles of Frederick & Washington COs VA - 18th Century

I am trying to piece together the various Colville families of Orange > Frederick CO VA. One of these families had a duaghter Ann Colville that marr to Samuel Evans (believed s/o William Evans). I would like to put this Ann in her place. These Evans and some of the Colvilles, along with several other families (Cusicks, Vance et al) migrated to Washington CO VA.

There were 3 Colvill will records filed in Frederick CO duirng the time frame of interest. They include...

-Jos. Colville 1758 will;
According to a partial transcription that I have, Joseph names wife Elizabeth & names children:
>>Andrew
>>Joseph
>>Samuel
>>?Martha is either dau. or a wife of Samuel (son)
>>?Willaim Vance is son Wm. Vance Colville, or is this William Vance a husband of one of Joseph's daughters? (=this is not clear from the transcription that I have)

-James Colville Will Book 4, pg 257, Will of James Colville (16 Mar 1776-prob 1777) names wife Ann; son John; daughters Ann & Janet Colville; Margaret Nivvil (Margaret married Thomas Newell); Eleanor Willson, and grand children James Colville son of Joseph Colville, Elizabeth McCaully. Executors were Joseph, John and Samuel Colville. Witnesses included Samuel Vance and James Colville.
Washington CO VA-
This James names wife Ann & children:
>>John
>>Ann
>>Janet
>>Margaret marr Newell (Thomas)
>>Eleanor marr a Wilson (Hugh) Eleanor is not named in will of John Colville 1802
Grandchildren:
>>>James s/o Joseph Colville
= one of Jas.' dau.s, perhaps deceased, marr Jos. Colville (?Martha?)
>>>Elizabeth McCaully
= one of Jas.' dau.s , perhaps deceased, marr to a McCaully, or... a g.dau marr a
McCauley

-John Colville 2 Nov 1802 prob 5 Apr 1803 p. 51, Frederick County Virginia Wills & Administrations 1795-1816, Compiled By M.N. Kangas D.E. Payne , Clearfield CO, Ancestry books online. WBk-7. p. 107-111. Will of John Colvile names sisters Jennet, Margaret Newell, Martha Colvil, Ann Thompson, Mary Marques. Bro: Samuel (wife Mary, dau. Ann)
Legatee: Robert Mattock; John Adams; Presbyterian congregation of Cedar Creek Meeting House; bound boy James Church to sister Jennet during her natural life, farm on Long Marsh to be divided, valued and reserved for her; reserve for Robert Mattock his weaver’s shop and small garden and lodging in the mansion during his natural life. To brother Samuel Colvil, sell him part of the land. All personal property to be sold and the sum of $116.76-2/3 to be placed at interest for support of the gospel in the congregation of Cedar Creek, such interest to be paid annually to the Presbyterian minister officially at the Cedar Creek Meeting House. Upon death of sister Jennet, the principal to return to estate to become part of residue to be willed to nephews and to each of their sons related to me by consanguinity and named after me – to each £10 – John Colvil and John Marquis, nephews, their sons John Colvil, sons of Joseph, John Marquis son of John Marquis Sr., John Marquis son of John Marquis, son of James. To John McCauly, son of niece, £10. To sister-in-law Mary Colvil, $10. To my friend Robert Mattock, $50. To bound boy James Church, one year’s schooling, and if he lives with my sister Jennett to age 21 and behaves dutifully, a horse saddle and bridle of $100 value and $100 in money or bonds. Negro girl Milo, about 8, and negro boy Griff, age 2 years, to be manumitted at age 30, to be property of sister Jennett in interim. Estate residue to brother Samuel Colvil and John Adams, but if they decide not to take it at appraisement, executors to sell within one year of my decease. Residue to be divided into five equal parts: To brother Samuel, less £50 to his daughter Ann; to sister Margaret Newell and family; to children of family of sister Martha Colvil; to sister Jennet; to sister Ann Thompson with remainder to her daughters at her death. The family of sister Mary Marques (William Marquis, John Marquis, Thomas Marquis, Sarah Vance, Annie Cowan, Elizabeth McCauly and James Marquis) live a considerable distance away, and I do not know if they are alive.
Exec: Daniel McCauly, John Adams, Robert Mattock, William Marquis. Wit: Edward Howe, Charles Barris, Jacob Rodes. Sec: James Marquis, David Osborn, £2,000

John Colville not marr when will written and no children named. James names siblings:
-Jennet (Janet) = Janet named in will of James 1776
-Margaret Newell = named in will of James 1776
-Martha Colville = ass.u.me this is Martha who marr Joseph Colville
-Ann Thompson = Ann named in will of James 1776
-Mary Marques (not named in will of James 1776 WHY NOT? )
-Samuel (not named in will of James 1776 WHY NOT? )
-a sister marr a McCaully (?Daniel?)

It might seem that the John who died 1802 was the son of James who died 1776.

Why did James not name children Mary and Samuel?
Is this the same family?

'Others' list additional children of James (d/1776) & Ann including
-Robert d. 1755 ?marr his cousin Martha Colville
-Agnes ?marr a cousin Samuel Colville
-Sarah ?marr a cousin Samuel Vance
I have no idea if these three additional children are documented.

I would really like to figure this family out. All leads appreciated.

Thank you,
Debra

Seeking information on the family of Robert Colvill who married Marjory/May Glas 02 Sep 1762 at Kettle, Fife. Information in my files indicate that he was a minister at Dysart, Fife.

I am not descended through the Colvill family; rather, through his wife's Glas line. May Glas's sister, Margaret is one of my ancestral grandmothers. Jean Balfour is the mother of May and Margaret Glas, and I am trying to unravel my Balfour line....which has not been easy due to so many discrepancies.

Thanks much,

Betty in NC

Biography of John Colville, Oscaloosa, Iowa, 12-6-1882

The Daily Advocate
Newark, Ohio
December 27, 1882

Mr. John Colville was one of our early settlers and a long time resident of this county. He was a son of Major Colville, born in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, September 5, 1797, and settled in Licking county in 1824. The subject of this sketch was the youngest of four sons, and his father and three brothers rendered service in the War of 1812, he being too young to "go a soldiering". His father was a major, and his brother Samuel was a captain, while his brothers Robert and James were in the ranks, and all served during the war. John Colville in 1828, united in marriage with Eliza Turner, who died in 1841, he surviving her 41 years. He removed to Iowa many years ago, and died at the residence of his nephew, D.H. Colville, near Oscaloosa, Mahaska county, in said state, December 6, 1882, in the 86th year of his age. The Colville family was of Scotch-Irish ancestry, long-lived, vigorous, patriotic. So Patriotic was John that upon the call of his country during the late rebellion, though 65 years old, he (in company with Nicholas Ramy and Wayne McCaddon, both former venerable citizens of Licking county) enlisted in the celebrated gray-beard regiment of Iowa, and served to the close of the war. His Devotion to his country and military services probably led to impaired vision while on duty, which gradually grew more dim with advancing years, so that he endured total blindness during the last four years of his life, but a beneficent government smoothed his pathway to the tomb by granting him a liberal pension.
