Hi Suzann,
I would guess we are related. I do have a cousin Susan Colwell Head, but I believe she is a Susan and not a Suzann.

I am Benjamin's gg granddaughter. His son, Ben L, was my father's grandfather. (My Dad's father married late in life.) What is your connection with Benjamin?

My mother thought the Lemul whom she found a church document about, was Benjamin's father. She found the document in a church in Frederick, MD. and it apparently dated back to the 1780s. Benjamin also did have a son named Lemuel, as you know. I think the son, Lemuel, was born in 1824.

Another tidbit, somehow my mother said she found some passenger records that she thought showed that my father's family came to the U.S. by first going to Barbados. But unfortunately all her work has been lost.

My email is: ccolwell4@yahoo.com. I look forward to hearing from you. And finding a new cousin? Thanks so much for replying to my post.

Carolyn

Hi there--I have't been on ancestry.com for quite awhile, but rejoined with a guest membership to answer you. I have a document with some info that we found out about Benjamin before giving up--as I mentioned--we think he did originally start out from Maryland, but don't know where the family was before then--when they emigrated from England ( a guess), and where they entered the US. We think the Lemuel you refer to is his son...but your mother could be right, if the church record was earlier than 1800. Let me know your email and will send the doc to you. What's your interest? Are we by chance related? :-) Cheers--Suzanne Colwell

_

I'm on the same search. Have you had any luck? My mother once found a church record in a Frederick, MD church about a Lemul or Lemuel Colwell whom she thought was Benjamin's (born 1800) father. Unfortunately, we've lost that paper record.

Colwells in Columbia Arkansas

Looking for any information on a Colwell family. Mostly I am interested in the a man named Jeff Colwell who married a woman named Effie Barge. They had numerous children one of shich Cleo in my wifes grandmother.

Jeff was living in 1900 with a woman named Irene Twitty Pickler according to the 1900 census and was listed as a nephew. I belive he was related to her passed husband George W Pickler (1841-1893) who had a number of siblings. I think that because the Picklers were from Tennesee and Jeff lists his Parents as born in Tennesee. Irenes family was from Missisippi.

Any help would be great I am at an apparent dead end.

Thanks

They had 8 sons Thomas March 1888; morgan Lee December 1889;Goron Huel Feb 1891; William Arvie;Robert Edgar march 12 1898; James C march 9, 1900;Zebulon Arthur May 9, 1903;Woodie Lee Aug 13, 1906; and two daughters Annie C June 1896 and Mittie lou Sept 16, 1909. All were born in Muscogee County, except for parents.Edward Colwell is as far back as I go he was born in 1830. Hope this helps but it sounds like we staed on the eastern part and yours on the west.
Many if not most of the original Colwells in this country, started out in the colonies at RI. From there they spread as the territories that were once protected by treaties between the Native Americans and the British, ended.

If you know what counties the earliest Colwells lived in, within your family branch, you may be able to narrow down which ones were likely to move west, to Colorado. If there were none, it is likely that one of your family branches married into the Colwell family.

It is also possible that the family were visiting someone and a picture was taken outside the tavern. In that case, the Colwell family is not connected. But still leaves you to wonder who they were.

You might want to research the name of the beer. It may have been produced in only one town or county, which could help you pin-point the place of origin.

Hi, I realize this is a very old post, but I hope to hear from you. My question concerns a fellow named Charles Melvin Colwell b. ca 1862, married to Luvica or Lovica Burns [PANB-BMD] buried in Colwell Cemetery. I am pretty sure he is of this family, just cannot make the connection to his father. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

I can't take any credit for tedious work (except for typing this reply twice because the first one got deleted). My information comes from "Robert Colwell of Providence and his Descendants", compiled by Ruth Story Devereux Eddy in 1936.

Robert (3)'s transactions are recorded in the Glocester Registry of Deeds.

(3.56) On 07 Dec 1744, Fisher Potter sold Robert land "near Obadiah Brown and 1/2 mile east of Joseph Winsor."

(3.49) On 08 Dec 1744, Samuel Winsor (Robert's father-in-law), sold him 60 acres "in Glocester, which is the eastern part of my land adjoining the east side of my son Joseph's land, where he now lives."

On 27 Aug 1771, Robert Colwell and Eleazer Bowen exchanged land, as shown in these deeds:
(8.393) Colwell to Bowen "a part of that land I purchased of Fisher Potter of Scituate, near Bowen's land."
(8.394) Bowen to Colwell "land which I purchased from Stephen Keech."

(8.497) On 28 Feb 1773, Robert Colwell purchased from Richard Tucker 1/2 part of 17 acres which he held jointly with Samuel Steere (on both sides of the Chepachet River), as shown in the deed of Andrew Brown and Elisha Brown.

(9.114) On 21 May 1773, Joseph Winsor sold to Robert Colwell 3 acres on the westerly side of Robert's homestead, which was near Jeremiah Phillip's land.

As I said, all the descriptions of land are given relative to other properties rather than located directly.

Thank you for your prompt response. Could you post or send me the summary of deeds you have, or tell me where to look for them? I am just beginning my family research and truly appreciate the tedious work so many others have put into preserving accurate family histories.

Robert Colwell Jr was born in Providence. He is on record in Bristol, RI in 1699. Sometime before 1722, he returned to Providence. It is not stated whether he had any more changes of residence. He died in June, 1748.

Robert (3)'s death in Glocester RI was reported in the newspaper of December 14, 1797. His wife also died in 1797, presumably in Glocester, although this is not stated.

No specific burial locations are given. I have a summary of deeds indicating where his property was relative to other landowners in Glocester, but I don't know if this could be used to narrow down where he was likely to be buried.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hi -
I have this photo of what looks to be a saloon. As you can see the board above the entrance reads

J. L. Colwell
Schmitt and Schwanenflugels
Bohemian Beer

I do not know why we would have this image in our collection of family photos, there is no date or location written on the photo, nor do I know who any of the people are.

Maybe someone here can identify more information?

I found this photo in my great-grandmother's collection so it could relate to the Batchelor/ Burns / Smith / Knapp families.

Thank you,
Gabrielle
mrsebarry@hotmail.com

Sorry it took so long – it's been a busy week.

Here is what I have, starting from 11-William. The index numbers before the names are the ones Eddy uses. The asterisked numbers are expanded on below.

11-WILLIAM COLWELL

Born	23 Dec 1709, Bristol
Still Living	15 Jan 1792, Glocester, RI

Married	Ann, dau. of Epenetus and Mary (Williams) Olney, b. about 1710. Stephen, son of John Usher. 51-David served in the Revolutionary War.

11-William owned 45 acres in Glocester, which he later divided between his sons.
I'm sorry, I just noticed your response, and it's so late, it's early :) I'll get back to you in a few days with some info.

Eddy records a large number of descendants in the next few generations, but then doesn't follow up on them, so there's a good chance that you won't see many more familiar names. However, there are still over 150, and I have no way to transfer the information except by typing it out.

Colwells from RI to Otsego Co., NY, to Ontario Co., NY to Hillsdale Co.,MI...

There were Colwell families in Otsego County, NY in the late 1790s and early 1800s. All or nearly all came from RI. Those in my ancestral line left RI for Richfield, Otsego, NY. Next, they moved to Seneca, Ontario, NY, and then to Reading, Hillsdale, Michigan. They spread out from there. Other close relatives were scattered at times in surrounding communities and counties.

About COLWELLs in Richfield, Otsego, NY

I noticed that the name most often mentioned was Samuel. I believe that he was the son of Christopher Colwell and Martha Winsor.

Christopher and Martha (Winsor) Colwell have had 11 children attributed to them, but I had not fully verified each one. The names that I did have, I put in another messageboard and a Mr. Richard VanWagenen was kind enough to send me this info about them:

[from] genealogy.com., under Rhode Island Births (1640-1976).

Joseph Sept 12, 1773
Robert Feb 2, 1775
Isaac Dec 3, 1777
Lydia Dec 31, 1778
Samuel Dec 7, 1780
Charles Feb 16, 1783
Richard June 10, 1785
Alfred Oct 27, 1787
Rufus Oct 27, 1790
John and William [possible other sons] where not listed.
All the births occured in Foster, Providence, Rhode Island.

Also for 1790 census Foster, Providence, Rhode Island a Christopher Colwell is listed as head of Household.

Martha Winsor born Dec 18, 1752 in Glocester, Providence, Rhode Island.

Richard VanWagenen
------------------------------------------------------
Christopher Colwell (above) b. 1746, RI was the brother to Daniel Colwell Sr., b 1741, Providence, RI (my line), who also was said to have lived at Richfield and Sempronius NY. Both were sons of John Colwell (b. 1708 RI) and Margaret Sprague.
----------------------------
More misc. notes on COLWELLs of Richfield, Otsego, NY:

Reminiscences: personal and other incidents: early settlement of Otsego NY, notices and anecdotes of public men; Judicial, legal and legislative field sports : dissertations and discussions
by Levi Beardsley
New York: Printed by C. Vinten, 1852, 586 pgs.

pg 35
I have never seen so good wrestlers as those early settlers in Richfield. The Colwell family, take them as a whole, were the best in town. Isaac and Robert, who have been dead many years, were very powerful; Samuel, yet alive, about four years older than myself, was master among the boys.
I became skilful in all these sports, understood them well, and in a rough and tumble scuffle or at side hold, there were but few of my age I could not throw. Every lock, in wrestling, was familiar, and I knew how and when to take them, and how and when to lay out my strength to accomplish my object.....

pg 472
...Dr. Colwell, an old school-fellow with me, still living at Unadilla , was also one of the craft [hunter or sportsman].

The History of Otsego County, New York
1740-1878
D. Hamilton Hurd
Published by Everts & Fariss, Philadelphia
Church Histories
RICHFIELD:
BREWSTER'S TAVERN EPISCOPAL church. The first church society that was ever formed in this town was the Protestant Episcopal, which was organized at Brewster's Tavern in 1799, with Rev. Daniel NASH as pastor. The church edifice was not erected until 1803. It stood north of the old elms, on the Colwell farm. Christopher COLWELL donated the lot. An old cemetery still marks the spot, and the names of many of the first settlers may be deciphered from the moss-covered tombstones. A neat iron railing incloses the remains of three of the FARNHAM family. John, Amasa, and Cyrus PRINGLE, Timothy HATCH, and Eben EDSON were some of the prominent Episcopalians.
The old church was taken down, and in 1832 the new St. Luke's, now standing in the village, was built. Ezra CAREY (father of Ezra CAREY, Jr. and Mrs. Wm. AUSTIN) was one of the prime movers in the enterprise. He was a successful and energetic business man, and gave freely for the support of the church. He died, in the prime of life, the day after the church was raised. Another prominent member was Aaron DOW, who died in 1833, and was the first person buried from the new church.*
*Rev. Edward PECKE, of Richfield Springs, now holds occasional services in this church.

Annals of Richfield by Ward, Henry A.
Utica, N.Y.: Press of Fierstine Printing House, 1898
pg 17, SETTLEMENT OF RICHFIELD PROPER: "...the Colwells came soon after [1790]".

pg 28,
A FULL LIST OF RICHFIELD'S SUPERVISORS, WITH DATES OF ELECTION:
Christopher Colwell, 1795
Samuel Colwell, 1817-19
Samuel Colwell, 1827-8

pg 35
RICHFIELD PEOPLE
In County, State, and National Offic, and Years of Election or Appointment:
Members of Assembly, Samuel Colwell, 1831

pg 71
Other Hotels are
...Sunnyside, by C. In 1820 he had 8 children, four sons and four daughters. He was the son of Daniel Colwell Sr. and Mercy Hopkins. He had other Colwell relation living there, like his uncle Christopher.

Stukley's wife, Martha, died and eventually, Stukley and most of his children traveled to Michigan, settling in and around Reading, Hillsdale, MI.
