I have Louisa Courtoy (1832 or 35 - 1888) marriage to Matthew Combe 1853 & their daughter Louisa Jane Combe 1862 - 1916 marriage to William Edward Calman 1886

I do recall family stories from my uncles re the history out that way.....

If the date you are saying for Louisa is correct - do you know if she remarried??
One of the last things my dad said before he passed was that it was a family tradition to remarry.....??

also Forbes Family History Group lists the Calman/Combe famiy as one of their prominent families.
The deaths registrations in NSW has:
20191/1941 CALMAN LOUISA JANE MATTHEW TOMLINSON LOUISA WYONG
Matthew Tomlinson Combe was the father of Louisa Jane who didn't die in 1888. She died in 1941.
So, Marion Cagney would be interested in your information.

My grandmother was their youngest child, Margaret, who married Edgar Lyman Bradley, Jr & my mother is their daughter Margaret Bradley Forsyth (age 93). CORRECTION TO : Santos "Sandy" Combe was born May 4, 1896 in Italy and died Dec. 25, 1896 from a knife .
It should read that Sandy died Dec. 25, 1926 -
He possibly was named Joseph Santos (?) - everything I find for him has him with a different AKA or alia - Luckily, I have located newpspaper articles regarding his murder. One lists him as Sandy Combe/Combs; a 2nd as Sandy Combe, alias Jack Johnson; and a third only as Jack Johnson. But in the 3rd article he is listed as having a wife and 3 children - he and wife Marion Hamilton Combe only had 1 dau. and "possibly" she could have had nieces or nephews in the home , since he was playing Santa that nite. But can't figure out which children it would be since most of her siblings children were teens.

How can we establish if Matthew Comb Jnr Brewer is Lt. Combe’s father & family? Are there records from Trinity House in Edinburgh that would list his parents when he joined at 14 yrs in 1808? There are no parents mentioned on his RN records that we have obtained copies of from the UK.

Matthew Comb/e Jnr Brewer Yardheads, Leith mentioned two sisters in his will Janet & Agnes – Agnes was married to James Scarth & I think they had a son Matthew Scarth that was Matthew Combe’s godson/nephew? To be confirmed.

Also who was Matthew Comb/e Senior. Brewer of Leith? Did he originate from England? Was he related to Harvey Christian Combe of London or was the Comb family Scottish for generations?

Lt. Matthew Combe b.1793 married Jane Manser in Pevensey Sussex 1829 his son Matthew Tomlinson Combe b. 1830 c. 23 Oct 1831 Hooe, Sussex & emigrated to Australia, married Louisa Courtoy 1852 South Australia, later settled in Victoria.

If anyone has ANY information on the Comb/e or Campbell families we would be grateful if you could make contact & help us find the evidence we need to prove these connections & questions are correct (or not!)

I can go back one more generation to Robert Slocombe born in 1731 who married a Jenny Burge. They had James 1763, Elizabeth 1763 (Twins?), William 13 Feb 1767, Sarah Slocombe 1771, and John Slocombe 1771/2. Before that it is a matter of conjecture.

My GG Grandfather was Robert Slocombe 19 Jan 1800. His son Charles was born in Huish Champflower but moved to Hatch Beauchamp where he was both a farmer and blacksmith. The old forge is stil there but it has been converted into a house.

I have a pretty complete list of descendents from Robert Slocombe but I had no idea your GG Grandfather had moved to the US. I had heard stories that we had relatives that had made the move but that was a far as it went. Sadly my grandparents all died before I developed an interest in genealogy.

I have some photographs you might like to see, if you email me with your email address I will put a package together for you. It is terrific to find some relatives in North America. Slocombes were among the early settlers in New England; I would love to establish a link to them.

Anyway that is enough for one day. I was born in Bath, Somerset, England but moved to Canada in 1967. I now live in Toronto.

It is so very good to hear from you. As I understand, William and Mary had 7 children. Jane b1798; Robert b1800; Betty b1803; Mary b1806; Mary b 1810; John b1811; and Ann b1813. The b is for baptisted. It is John who is my gggrandfather. Which of the children is you gg?

I have no information before William. Would love to know anything you have. I do have extensive information regarding John Slocombe and his wife Ann Shopland's family.

Also would be interested in where you live. I live in California.

Santos "Sandy" Combe b. May 15 or 18, 1896 Italy/d. Wendel WV by knife

Still searching for parents or siblings of Santos "Sandy" Combe. He was born in Italy May 15 or 18, 1896. About 1925 he married Marian "Murnie" Hamilton in Taylor Co.,WV. He died Dec. 25, 1926, after being attacked with a knife by unknown party/parties, in Wendel, Taylor Co.,WV. He was a coal miner.
He and daughter Murnie, had a daughter Josephine Helen Combe, born about 1925 in WV, and she died in 1956 in Alleghany Co.,PA. Most likely in McKeesport.
Any leads on the parents or siblings of Sandy greatly appreciated. I have a photo of him plus photos of Josephine. After death of Sandy, his widows 2nd husband was Homer Haddix. The family lived in Mckeesport, but Homer left and moved to California, passing away in 1956.

here in Aus the Combe family that I am researching always believed that there was a family connection to Andrew and George Combe, the phrenolgists. Brewers in this line of the tree too and lots of Matthew Combe and Campbell as a middle name.

My family lived in Huish Champflower in the early 1800s. I have them traced forward pretty well but moving back in time is proving difficult. There were Slocombes in Huish several generations earlier; it would be great to establish some form of continuity between that family and mine if possible. The earliest record I have found of the name is in a 13C in a Bishop's transcript.

I am especially interested in who were the family of Sarah Combs who had an illegitimate son Thomas in 1788?? - christened at Broadway - as I cannot find out anything more about her or Thomas's father.

I am not related to your family but I have been in email correspondence through the genesreunited website with a Richard and Helen Combe of Scotland who are researching George Combs and family.
I have asked them to either email you direct or for permission to give you their email address.

William Combe is the brother of George Combe the well known phrenologist of Edinburgh, Scotland, a friend of the author George Eliot and the son of Georg Comb. William was born c. 1780 in Edinburgh and c. 1830 went to Albany, NY where he was in the brewery business, having learned the trade from his father, a brewer in Scotland. His daughter Margaret married my husband's great grandfather Andrew Jackson Post born in Montpelier, VT. I would like to find any information on William Combe, his wife's name, other children, etc. I have been unable to find anything about him in any genealogy sites.

Is there any possibility that members of your SLOCMBE might have been in the area of Wiveliscombe, Somerset? I have a John and Ann (SHOPLAND) SLOCOMBE who born there in the 1810s. His parents were William and Mary (TUNEWELL/TINEWELL) SLOCOMBE. Also from this area -- Huish Champflower.

I expect that Elizabeth's maiden name was QUINN.

If they married in Scotland, that event should be registered at the same site.

The word combe means a side of a hill or valley a great many places in devon have the word combe in their names slocombe
comes from the word slo or slee which is a type of berry therfore the family slocombe were the people who lived in the valley with the berries

My Great Grand Father was Joseph Combe and my Great grand mother was Mary Anna Grill. My dad said that grand mother spoke only french. I have some exerts from their family bible that talk abouth them going into debt and finally deciding to come to the USA. I don't know that this will add much to your questions. My grandfather told me that the family changed their name from Comba to Combe when they arrived here in the US. That History you have of my Grand Father (Joseph Combe) born in Martinat sounds real interesting

My G-Grandfather is James Combe and he immigrated here in late 1800's early 1900's and listed his birthplace as Scotland. He died during the plague in approx 1916. in PA. In reference to another message posted here, my grandmother had a darker complexion with black curly hair. Would love to know any information.

There were apparently a number of people who fled England and went to Italy. The Waldensian (sp) Church doesn't have record of any Combes until something the 14th century. However, there is/was a Castle Comb(e) in England and evidence of the name at least as early as 12th century. Piedmont was in France or Italy, depending on who had control, as it is a mountain town.
It might be a good idea to check this out if a physical feature of the family is darker complexions.
My particular family left Italy in the late 1800s for America.

A book on my family was written. A copy of a letter sent to my mom's uncle states the following:
..is the same in Italy as Comba, Cumba, Combo and Combat. It is one of the best known names in the Waldensian Valleys...Combe is closer to the French language, Comba is closer to the Italian...the family was first known in the village of St. Veran in Queyras valley in the year 1261 (oops)...and is in France just barely across the border from the Waldensian valleys in Italy.

I will have to check the history, but I believe that it was in the 1200s that people left England.

I haven't been able to get all of the stuff into the computer yet. I have been actively pursuing names that I don't have much on. Combe has been well researched. I believe that FamilySearch.org has quite a bit. The earliest actual history I have is Joseph who was born January 25, 1846 in Martinat and he married Mary Anna Grill who was born September 4, 1849 in Ciavet Rocapiata, Italy.

I am not sure how far back one would have to go to connect people, as it sounds like there is quite a collection of them there.

Hello Judy, I may be chasing an elusive person here, but, when I saw your information I was wondering if you could tell me if you have ever seen a Comba or Radaz family listed with the Combe family. Here is the information that I have in hopes of you being able to assist me.

The parents names were:

Marmeto Radaz
Margarita Quvez Comba

Lived in Auteluz, Savoy, France

This was taken from records of the Archdiocese of New Orleans at the time of the brothers, Donat and Francois, marriages at that location.

Morning, I am interested in obtaining information regarding the Comba family name. We are looking for Margarita Quvez Comba that married Marmeto Radaz before 1810 supposedly in Auteluz, Savoy, France. Their children's names were Donat and Francois, Francois married Henrietta ?? and their children's names were Erinantino born 1837 in New Orleans, La, Eugene, Mary Felonese born 15 August 1834, and Francis born in 1835.

Hi I too am looking for info. I had an uncle by the name of Emile but I know he could not be who you are looking for. But what I would like to know is did your family come from Louisiana? There is very little known about the Combe's here because my grandparents died when my dad was very young and he was 16 years younger than the youngest.
