Joel Dubois Comfort married Emeline Ludington 1822 in Catskill NY

Joel was born in !800 to Samuel and Anna Youngblood in Orange County, NY. Joel and his brother Hiram both lived in Catskill NY and each had a wife with surname Ludington.

Joel's wife was Emeline born abt 1805 prob in Catskill. I can find no reference to her parents, but wonder if they could be Archibald Ludington (son of Col. Henry) and his wife Eliza Sears. Archibald died in 1820 so no detailed census records are available.

Hiram married Julia Ludington also in 1822 in Catskill. She was the daughter of Tertullus(1773-1821), brother of Archibald.

Does anyone know?

My email is merrillbakes at gmail dot com.

Since finding Issac's obit, a lot of things are clearer now. However, I don't think Electus helped his father write that poem, since he was nine at the time of Isaac's death :)
Rumor has it the coauthor was either his brother Sanford or his wife Mary.

Do you have when/where Isaac was born? None of Stephen's children were baptized in the same church as the previous Douglass's. So I'm guessing he was born somewhere between Norwich and Middletown CT, before Stephen followed his brother Caleb to Whitestown, NY.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Isaac Douglass (yes, 2 s's) is my 4th Gr grandfather. He was the author of The Wanderer, and i believe Electus had something to do with it as well. I have Isaac's copy, which he was editing by hand (really falling apart)...this is how i know that he spelled Douglass with 2 s's. It's usually spelled with one...doesn't matter.

I have a nice genealogy compiled by a family member in 1903. I'd be happy to share it with you, if you will send me your email so i can attach it. I also have 2 obits.

My line moves on from Emily. Our common grandfather, John, was in the Revolution and is listed as a patriot ancestor on the DAR site. Samuel Comfort and Johannes Wm Youngblood as well and are both in the old cemetery.

You will really enjoy the old cemetery. The stones are falling apart and hard to read. Bring a spray bottle of water with you to help make the inscriptions on the stones stand out a bit.

The DAR site is accessible. Once you get on, go to GRS research. work your way along until you have a choice to make. Go to "Ancestors" and take it from there. You can view their records.

Jody Masterson

Found Isaac - and surprisingly - he was a part of the New London migration. Here is his obit in the Catskill Reader:

June 30, 1819
At Mexico, Oswego county, Mr. Isaac Douglass, son of Mr. Stephen Douglass, of that town. A sketch of some of the facts relative to the life and death of one who has been so often before our readers in the character of a writer, will not, we hope, be deemed impertinent. The deceased, after receiving a preparatory course of education at Hamilton, entered the Academy at Montgomery as assistant teacher. In the spring of 1816, he removed to Catskill, and in the fall of 1817 commenced his theological studies. The superintendence of a daily school, and incessant application, originated a disease which induced him to return to Mexico, with the hope of restoring his health by relaxation. But every exertion was unavailing – His midnight vigils had impaired beyond recovery a constitution naturally delicate; He gradually wasted beneath his disorder, and expired in the 16th inst. His piety was of the practical kind, and adorned his faith with living emblems of its purity. The gentleness of his disposition, and the urbanity of his manners, gained him the strongest affection of his friends, and the good will of all. In his writings he was not less happy than in his virtues. The “Brief Scripture Remarker” of which Nos. he was the author, gained no inconsiderable degree of celebrity. He also published a series of poetical pieces under the head of “Sacred Effusions”, several numbers of “The Babbler”, and a great variety of miscellaneous productions. At no time, however, did he descend to mere trifles – everything from his pen was intended to inculcate some religious or moral truth. During his long illness, he exhibited the same cheerfulness and patience that shed so mild a luster over his life: And in the hour of death, the God he trusted in did not forsake him. The following facts are from a letter from his father to the Editor, “He appeared to gain strength of mind for some days before he died. Two days before, he was sustained on his bed, and made a long prayer, which was done with firmness of mind, and with propriety. During his exertion, his strength held out beyond our expectations. On the last day of his life, he did his great duty to his family with composure, speaking to every individual. About twenty minutes before he died, he mentioned that he felt stronger and stronger in Christ.” There is something deeply humbling to the mind of man, that wealth, nor rank, nor learning, can shield him from the inevitable chance of death – That an early exhibition of genius and worth are two often the premature annunciations of his approach – and that all things pertaining to knowledge, do but hasten and consummate his reign. But humbling as this state of man is, it is crowned with an undying consolation – that the shortest time, if rightly improved, is long enough for preparation; and that an exchange under these circumstances, is gain eternal.

“Servant of God, well done!
Rest from thy lov’d employ; |
The battle’s fought, the vict’ry won
Enter thy master’s joy.”

Obituaries for the Catskill Recorder
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nygreen2/obituaries_from_t...

OK, a lot of this makes sense, but there is still one red herring I think…

According to my research (both through the family and on line) Samuel Comfort and Anna Maria Youngblood Comfort had 9 children:
Mary - 1793-1881 - Married Isaac Douglass - then Philip Mould (see http://library.uwinnipeg.ca/people/dobson/genealogy/ff/Maul.... entry 10)
Elsje Rogers - 1785 - ? - Married Egbert Bogardus
Moses Rogers - 1786+1839 - Married Ann Pache
Samuel Rogers Jr - 1788 - 1846 - Married Fanny Low
Hiram Rogers - 1791 - 1839 - Married Julia Eliza Luddington
James Rogers - 1795 - 1834 - Married Jane. A. Smith
Martha (Mattie) Rogers - 1797 - 1874 - Married Moses Rogers (Thanks for the info on it being a second marriage - we sort of thought so, but had no proof - something more to research). We have this information written in our family bible from their daughter Sarah Elizabeth)
Joel Dubois Rogers - 1800-?
Caty Rogers - 1802 - ?
There was no Margaret, so yes, I think that it was Martha all the while.

Mary and Isaac had 3 children:
Electus Douglass - 1810-1891 - Married Mary Blackmar - then Sara E. Rogers (his cousin)
Emily Douglass - 1816 - 1897 - Married John Mould (her cousin)
Harrison Douglass - 1816 - 1880 - Married Mary Jane Marvin

Martha and Moses had 4 children:
Mary Catherine Rogers - 1821 - 1895 - never married
Elsie Ann Rogers 1823-? - Married Daniel Shafer
Sarah Elizabeth Rogers - 1826 - ? - Married Electus Douglass
Julia Luddington Rogers - 1828 - 1833

Your notes on R.D. Ch and DRCh - both mean the Old Brick Church in Montgomery, NY. Lots and lots of the family buried there.

I have no notes on either an Electus Comfort or a Lester Comfort.

My Mom and I are planning a week long stay in the Montgomery area near the end of September to do some serious research.

Now on to the great red herring - Isaac Douglas.

My initial research came up with the same as the Bottings - that Isaac was part of the New London CT Douglasses.

At this point - I am 85% sure that this is wrong.

In my research into Electus, I found that his father Isaac
-taught at the Montgomery Academy for a while
- had a brother who may or may not have helped him co-write the poem The Wanderer, or Horatio and Laetitia
- Was a member of the Catskill (Greene County) Presbyterian Church in 1817 (their register mentions him joining the church - and dying - the same day in 1817. Electus and his first wife Mary left this church in 1838).

The details from this Isaac and the CT Isaac just don’t mesh. Mom and I are heading to New London over the 4th of July holiday to do some more digging. I’d love to be wrong about this - for then I’d have the bloody Douglass line set for at least 16 generations.

Thanks for the input, and I’ll keep the forum updated with anything new I find.

Re: Have Martha, Need Moses - Have Mary, Need Isaac

There isn't much information in the Comfort Families of America by Cecelia and Roland Botting. That said, here is what there is:
P 411. (h) Martha Comfort 19 May 1797 - 15 July 1874). She and her husband are buried at Montgomery R.D. Church. See Margaret p.609.
Married Moses Rogers (15 Jan 1791 - 8 Feb 1852) 3 May 1821. This was his second marriage.
P 609. Margaret Comfort according to 2 sources is buried at Montgomery (Orange County, NY) R. D. Ch.; her dates are given as 19 May 1797 - 15 July 1872. Comparison with the dates of Martha Comfort (p.411), who is buried in the same cemetery, leads us to suspect an error in copying the record. Perhaps Margaret is really Martha or vice versa.

Margaret and Moses in the book, are shown as having two children:
Mary Catherine Rogers b. 31 Dec 1821 and
Sarah Elizabeth Rogers b. 2 Sept 1826 who married Electus Douglass.
There are two handwritten additions:
Elsey Ann Rogers b. 27 Sept 1823 and
Julia Luddington Rogers b. 15 Oct 1828.
Both have the initials DRCh after the entries. These were added by my mother, who is a little sketchy on sourcing.
Concerning Isaac Douglass, p.397:
M1 Isaac Douglass(c1793 - before Dec 1819) on November 25(23?)1815. He was born at Norwich River, Conn., was of Oneida at the time of his marriage and died at Mexico, Oswego Co., NY. He was a newspaper writer. Issue: 3 or 4

Mary Comfort M2 Philip Mould (28 June 1785 - 12 Dec 1866) on 14 June 1838. This was his second marriage. His will is on file at Goshen, NY. Issue:0

There is indicated in the book some confusion about Lester Comfort and Electus Comfort; possibly being the same person.
Does the family bible shed any light on this?

Additionally, Appendix III, p.624 of _The Comfort Families of America_ by Cecelia and Roland Botting gives the family of Christoffel Moul and Anna Julianna Servin[multiple spellings] and lists eight children for them.
My direct ancestor was Martha (Mattie) Comfort b 1797. I have most of her information (from her granddaughter's family bible), including her husband's name Moses Rogers. I cannot find him anywhere? Anyone have any clues?

Her sister Mary Comfort b 1793 married Issac Douglass - who I am also trying to find information on. I was sure he was part of the New London Douglasses, but the dates just don't match up.

Martha'a daughter Sarah Elizabeth married Mary's son Electus and turned my family tree into a wreath :)

On page 249 is the entry for Mildred Houghton Bergemann who married Hollis Murdock Comfort 30 Sept 1914. She has an asterisk next to her name, which according to the authors indicates she contributed quite a bit of material to the publication. It is late here, but wanted to let you know I have finally found her. Let me know what material you are seeking.
Elizabeth

"2. Ann (Anna) _Margaret_ Comfort (between 1753 and 1758- )
In June, 1775, after the death of her father, Jacob Weltzhoover was appointed her guardian. Because of the connection of her brother John with Michael Von Kinnon, as well as other less specific indications, we believe that she is the Margaret Comfort who m. Michael Von Kinnon on April 22, 1777, at First Ref. Ch. of York."

"4. John Comfort (c1762-Feb. 1807)...Doubtless, he was the John who bought a lot in Lewistown on Aug. 17, 1795, and who, with Michael Von Kinnon, purchased land in Mifflin Co. in 1801. He and Mary sold property (Jan., 1807) to Michael Van Connen [sic]...."

Ann Margaret Comfort was the daughter of John (Johanes) Comfort d. Jan. 1774 and Marillas (Mary/Maria Elizabeth) Welshofer. [This may be a variation of the name Weltzhoover above.]
John Comfort being the son of Leonard Comfort, d. before 1762 and Maria Eva Veronica_____, will probated on Dec. 6, 1769.

page 525 "We have found no reason to connect Leonard Comfort with any other branch of the Comfort family. The fact that two of his sons were naturalized in York Co., PA in 1762, may suggest that Leonard was not born in America; one branch of his descendants preserved the tradition that they are of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. As we have discovered only one present-day family descended from Leonard, we have had to base our reconstruction of family lines almost wholly on such church and civil records as we have been able to locate; the regular repetition of Christian names from generation to generation has made it a puzzling task. We realize that there may be many inaccuracies."

Hope this helps.

Re: Wm Comfort/son of Ezra in Ottawa Co., Kansas: Topolobampo Colony?

Thanks for that. The Spiritualist movement was a big deal in the Delphos area and I knew that Lettie (d/o Ezra) and husband IN Richardson were involved. Certainly begs the question of what happened to Herbert.

There is no listing for Herbert in the Delphos Cemetery, but I will dig into the old records. Many of the Comfort family are in Highland Cemetery in Minneapolis KS, but he is not there, either. The only other possibility that occurs is Miltonvale Cemetery in southern Cloud Co. Ezra's brother James Hartis is buried there. I do not have that listing. Delphos would have been the most likely, but in 1891 no other Comforts were yet buried there-maybe one of the others seemed the better choice.

I will also revisit the Delphos paper microfilm for any clues. Possibly the Minneapolis paper would be more forthcoming. Having gone through years of these papers, it seems that anything Delphos did not want to talk about showed up in Minneapolis and vice versa. The Spiritualist movement/group fell in that category occasionally. While it attracted a more or less odd group at the annual camp meetings and was pretty far afield of the conventional religion of the area, its local proponents were among Delphos leading citizens.

Regards,
Kate Jacques (kjacques@alltech.com)
According to _The Comfort Families of America_ by Cecelia and Roland Botting, page 94:
"Ezra M. Comfort (Feb 9, 1839 - April 28 1924)... He briefly joined the Spiritualist co-operative colony at Topolobampo, Sinaloa, Mexico... In the fall of 1890 accompanied by his sons William and Herbert and by William's wife, Ezra migrated to the colony...in March, William d. of fever, and in July, the others set out for Kan. A week later, Ezra and Herbert reached Delphos, Kan., only a few minutes before Herbert too d. of fever."

Arvilla Cordelia Johnson (Feb 22, 1839 - Aug 26, 1901) married Ezra Comfort Sept 11, 1861 at Mt. Vernon, Ohio. She was born at Middlebury, Ohio and is buried in Delphos Cemetery. Issue 8 children .

William Luther Comfort, the eldest, born Oct 13, 1862 in Springdale, Cedar, Iowa. Married 23 Dec 1886 Sorelta L. Hoffmire. Died 11 March 1891.

Herbert Clifton Comfort, the sixth child, born in Iowa 30 Oct 1873, died 18 July 1891.

Judging from this, William died and was most probably buried in Topolobampo, Mexico. I do not see a body being transported so far in those days. Is Herbert Comfort buried in the Delphos Cemetery?

Wm Comfort/son of Ezra in Ottawa Co., Kansas: Topolobampo Colony?

I've transcribed the obits from the Delphos, (Ottawa Co) Kansas paper. In chasing the family of Ezra and Aurilla Comfort through them, I found the following item reprinted from a La Junta, CO paper in Aug 1891. Various family trees give a death date for their son William as 1891. Anyone know if this refers to him? (Parents are buried in Delphos Cemetery, but no listing for Wm...)

Delphos Republican
Aug 14, 1891

From La Junta Colorado WATERMELON:
There arrived in La Junta on Monday evening, direct from Topolobampo, Mexico, Mr. Ezra Comfort and his 18 yr old son and daughter-in-law Mrs. Sorelta Comfort. They are, or rather were, members of the Sinaloa or Topolobampo colony and were in the party that passed through this city last fall in charge of Hon C.B. Hoffman, of Enterprise, Kansas and bound for that Utopia, in Greaserland, off the coast of the Gulf of California known as Topolobampo, where so many have gone by the bright glare held out and delusions of bettering their worldly conditions, only to find rest from disappointed hopes in the tomb of the great sand hills that reflect back the heat of a scorching sun that often sets the mercury to dancing at 145 degrees in the sun, which finds little or no abatement of its powerful force in the shade. Mr. Comfort was on his way to his old home at Delphos, Ottawa County, Kansas which he hoped to reach with his boy who was suffering from one of the peculiar and fatal fevers known to Topolobampo before he breathed his last, so that his remains could be laid away in the dust of the stars and stripes, and not under that of an alien land. Nor was the journey made any too quickly, as word received yesterday announced the death of Mr. Comfort's son within one half hour after reaching Delphos. Mrs. Sorelta Comfort stopped off in La Junta and is visiting her parents, Judge James Hoffmire and family, but will go to her old home in Kansas in about two weeks. Her husband lies buried in the Godforsaken country of Topolobampo, died, a young man two months ago, of a raging fever, in that foreign and sand ridden paradise, where eight months ago he and his young bride followed the siren voice of Hoffman, Owen et al., and realized the disaster of their lives. There are about 400 deluded colonists in the valley. A common store and a common fund supplies all. The bosses, of course get the cream. The water is so hot that much sickness follows its drinking. Ice is unknown. Flour is $12 per hundred pounds and is furnished by Hollman's mills at Enterprise, Kansas and is of the poorest grade. It would be called 'shorts' in Kansas, in a white man's country. Indians and Mexicans are abundant, but sociable. All the tropical fruits are grown in profusion but no market. The company farm is under the management of N. Thurstin of Hope, Kansas who has all the isms that can well be crowded into the human system. He draws a fat salary and is one of the beneficiaries of the wild cat scheme. The community deals and believes in spiritualism, and has implicit faith and confidence in the sayings, teaching and utterances of Messrs. Hoffman, Owen, Thurstin and other receivers of the colony money. The Utopia is a dream, the dream a farce and the farce numbers many victims.
