This is a very late reply to your posting on the Commander family from 2000, but I wonder if you have any information on Margaret Commander of South Carolina who married a Walker. She was probably born about the 1760's or 1770's and had a daughter named Margaret who married into the Withers family. My wife is a descendant of Margaret (Commander) Walker but we have no idea which branch of the Commander family this would be. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Douglas Bowers

I did a "Members Connect" search and see that you have Annie Potterton, born Halifax, Yorkshire listed and also that you may have her listed in Connection with the Borrill Family - Harrogate. I am just curious as to what your connection might be - I do not have a paid subscription so am using the message boards to try and connect. I believe Annie Potterton is my Great Great Grandmother - gave birth to a son, Albert Potterton Hartley in 1865 before she married Thomas Borrill. I believe his father was a Thomas Hartley but Thomas and Annie were never married even though she used his name when registering the birth and Albert was given up and raised by the Preston Family in Thornton, Bradford, Yorkshire. Would love to connect and see what the family connections are. THANKS - I also have a photo of Annie Potterton on line..........

Hello, my records for the Warwickshire Commanders are on another hard drive, but i can definately help you, i will hopefully let you have the information that you need by Wednesday night. I seem to remember the name Comfort Plant, she was confusing, but there was more than one Comfort Plant so maybe this is where you are confused about dates, i will get back to you, kind regards Ellie

Philip
My family tree includes many of the Commander family from Stourbridge, Lapworth, Dudley, Oldbury, Rowington, and Bishops Tachbrook. I would be interested in a copy of your tree to see if I can fill in some of the many gaps I have. I tried your e-mail address but the message was returned.
Regards
Derek

Re: Re Commander family

It seems my reply on Friday did not get through as it has not appeared in the thread so I will try again:
I would be grateful if you could help me with three Williams in my tree.
The first my gtgtgt grandfather William Commander (1796-1866) born in Rowington married in 1820 to Jane ? (1800-1881) possibly from Bewdley, they had seven children, Louisa, Charles, George, Henry, Ann, Jabez, and Daniel. I am particularly interested in information on Jane although information on William’s brothers would also be helpful. His parents were John Commander (1769-1842) and Elizabeth Butcher(1770) married in 1795.
The second William (1789-1858) born in Lapworth was married to Comfort Plant (1792-1856) about 1813, they had 12 children. I would like to know who his ancestors were. Some sources suggest they were the same as William above (i.e. 6 years before his parents were married) but I think the father may have been a brother of John or an earlier ancestor. To confuse the issue more Comfort Plant is often mistakenly shown as the wife of two other Williams (1796 as above, and 1794).
My third William dates back to 1527 who had 8 children, Ellen, Henrie, Ann, Allis, Jane, Michael, Joan, and Susan. I came across his name in some searches and since my tree goes back to Robert (1515) and Mathew (1543) I was wondering if he is part of the same family. The children’s names are very different to other family members so it is possibly a very different branch of the family.
Hope you can help and if I can help you please let me know.
Regards
Derek
