I am the Granddaughter of Benjamin Commodore and Maggie Hollywood. My mother was Susan Commodore. My Great Grandfather was Thomas Commodore and Margaret Albrant or Brant. I have put together a book of all of the family, with pictures, birth and death records, census records. The book is by no means completed as I am still finding family members on the internet to add to it. I have about 175 pages so far.

My email is lizzie12@frontneac.net

Wiley Commodore seems like a very important person, there is duplicates of the 1880 Census on page 4 and 12 of 34 pages. In my opinion, Jenlou is Geneva Commodore because she claims Albert as her son and the census takers did not care at the time about correct names. Enora in 1859 on the 1910 census report is Geneva and Jenlou could be her as well. Wiley and Geneva were legally married abt 1888. Wiley's previous wife was Hettie Pernell in 1871 but I can not find Wiley in the 1870 Census. I do see my 3rd great grandfather William Commodore. The 1880 Census I see 30 of my ancestors: Gayles, Dovers and Commodores on page 26.

Wiley's brother or nephrew: James Commodore was missing in action near Yazoo City, MS on Feb 28, 1864 returned July 1865 and was on duty Aug 5, 1865 west of TN. James is definitely the brother of William Commodore my 3rd great grandfather.

There is also a Monroe Commodore (born 1848) and he is in the 1870 Census on page p132/323 right next to all my other ancestors and Wiley has a son name William and Monroe born abt 1884.

Thank you so much. I have figured out that Buster Commodore aka Simon's son moved to Boston, MA in 1930's. Buster's wife Mildred "Millie" wrote information about how Greenville,Washington,MS was back in the day of the 1920 floods and much more. I am close to locating Buster's son Gregory and granddaughter Millie at this point for the upcoming reunion. I would love to invite Albert Commodore's descendents to the Young-Gayles Reunion as I am a descendent of Indiana Commodore and Johnson T. Gayles (Gales) These are my great aunt's, Bessie Young grandparents and my great great grandparents of course. Bessie lives in Detriot, MI and she is the only living child of Naomi Gayles and Emile Young born in 1888. Actually, I have also located Sylvia Commodore Gayles descendents as well.I've been studying my ancestry for a year and have not located any Commodore's that are not direct descendents of Sylvia and Indiana Commodore Gayles.

I also see a Virgina connection...I know on the Gayles side that the slaves came from VA or Maryland to Lousiana and than to Bolivar and Washington/Sharkey County, MS.

Esquire Commodore who died in the 3rd US Colored Cav in MS no farther information is given online.
I see a Thornton Commodore born around 1842 in Stafford County, VA died 1911 in Vickburg,MS. Thornton served in the D 5th US Colored Heavy Artillery. Adeline his widow applied for pension in MS. They gives no dates. Don't know if investigating him might shade some light on the Commodores of Mississippi. Who knows if they are connected Hopefully, I will make my way down to my hometown and gather some more information.

African American Commodores of Mississippi & KY

I am seeking information on the Commodore Family of Mississippi. I know the boat did not land in Greenville, MS nor Sharkey County. I heard the family was very large there and I can't figure out much at all.. I am trying to locate descendents of Simon Commodore (1880-1976) of Greenville, MS and Augustas Commodore who lived in Boston, Mass in 1976. Mrs. Leola Hudson, Mrs Marleo "Mattie Lee" Willis, and Mrs Selena Cole of Egremont, MS.

Also I see an Anna Commodore (1821) from KY

The 1880 Census state there is a Hardy (b.1817) and Henrietta (b.1850) Commodore.

James (b.1855) married Francis (b.1850) with a daughter Silva Commodore.

William(b.1842) married Lucy children born into were James and Indiana (b 1866). Indiana Commodore-Gayles was my great great grandmother.

Others: Cyrus, Hattie and the list goes on and on..
So I am descendent of Indiana Commodore-Gayles. Where did everyone go with that last name or the descendents in general?

Thanks in advance...

If Albert's descendents would like to email me ancestors.legacy@gmail.com or we have a group on facebook called Ancestor's Legacy and an event called Young-Gayles Family Reunion.

Sharkey county was formed from part of Washington county and the whole area was part of the 1820 purchase from the Choctaw Indians. The first Commodore I have found in this area was Handy Commodore born abt 1815 in Mississippi. It would seem likely he came to the area after the purchase as the plantations weren't set up until the 1830s or so. The bit of history on the county says the plantations were set up by planters from other parts of Mississippi and some from the Carolinas.
It's speculation, but it appears Hardy and his wife (Henrietta/Scotty) had sons Wiley, William, Henry, and James. The Wiley may have been a brother of Hardy, but he could also be a son. The other three brothers all joined the Union army in the same month in 1863 at Skip landing on the Mississippi - not far from where they all grew up when Col Embury Osband formed the 1st and it became the 3rd Colored Calvary - company D (Under Major J B Cook). This unit served with distinction although the brothers deserted for a period but did return to duty. They saw some bloody action.
Sadly there are few records to go by and the census data is spotty in this part of Mississippi. But, I think we know your Simon was from Henry and Hester. And, Henry was one of those sons I wrote of earlier. You already know about your Indiana and Johnson Gales.
I'm not of this family but I did some searching around for a friend who is. They are descended from Albert Commodore and he appears to have been the son of Wiley, which may well have been a son or brother of Handy. Wiley had several wives from what we can piece together. That branch of the family left the Panther Burn area in the 1920s, and ultimately headed north (we're in Illinois).
There are few Commodores. You have a grouping in the Virginia and Carolina and the grouping in Mississippi and Louisiana.
At this point we're at a standstill and have no good way to get to Sharkey and Washington counties. I would hope there would be some death records and marriage records and possibly some slave records from the plantations. At this point we don't know what plantation or plantations the Commodores resided. I'm just hoping some records survived. I guess the war in this area led to many of the plantation houses being burned.

To anyone researching this thread...
I'd like to make contact to all regarding the Commodore, Robinson and McCoy last names.
I have additional information regarding John Wesley Commodore married to Martha Robinson. And for those looking for information regarding Emma (Commodore)(Neddow) who apparently married Robinson McCoy. All these people and many more are related to my family heritage through my ggggrandmother/father Mary Robinson and Alexander McCoy. Robinson McCoy was the first born child to Alex and Mary and was married previously. I don't believe Emma and Robinson ever married as in the 1901 census he was head as married still (wife still in Lanark?) and Emma and children as lodgers. 1911 shows the same effect (Robinson now widowed) and now with McCoy children added to the mix. 2 of interest are a Rosetta and a George (Birth records show illegitimate).
John Wesley Commodore married Martha Robinson who's father was William Robinson, a brother to my Mary Robinson McCoy.
Am always willing to share my information. Hoping someone out there can help me as well.
franknthegirlz@shaw.ca
Patricia McCoy Green

Hi Lizzie;

Couldn't help noticing you were looking for info re:Commodore. Emma Neddo was my grandfathers sister. My info is that she first married Thomas Commodore (is also under spelling of Conndore on ancestry site). They had 4 children. William James who died on 29 Jan 1897 at 7 months of age. Joe (no further info), Margaret (Maggie) born round 1887 and married Charles Cota on 02 Mar. 1910 and finally May (no info for her. I've only just started varifying dates and info for all of Peter & Sarah's kids. Emma married twice more. Once to Robinson (Bob?) McCoy and then to David Hollowood in Parham on 26 June 1912. One thing I should mention is that I noticed you received into from westwitch which is incorrect. Peters wifes name was Sarah Ann Elizabeth HUTTON not Hunter.
Hope this has been of some help to you.

The May York you are referring to is Lucinda May Commodore. She was the daughter of Waldron Commodore and Melissa Reynolds. She married a York and when he died she married a Joseph Badour. I have been searching this tree for 15 years and have put together a book and pictures of the Commodores with war records, census records, some birth, death and marriage records. It contains 187 pages. If you would like to know more I can send you the information. How did you know May York (commodore)?
My email is lizzie@frontenac.net
thanks Wayne, I have contacted Sherrie. I'm doing research on behalf of a client residing in England who is willing to share (freely of course) any information. Do you know if anyone has taken the Commodores/Quamadores back past Thomas and Joseph who appear in the 1851 Ontario census? To your knowledge, has any connection been made to the underground railway for example? The name is suggestive of Louisiana, though the two brothers (?) mentioned above could be descendants of someone who came in with the Loyalists earlier.

thanks

The John Wesley Commodore and Martha Robinson are my grandparents...they lived in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. They are buried in The Pas, Manitoba. I don't know much about them as they were gone many years before I was born (1947) and our family didn't seem to talk much about the past. As near as I know, they had 3 boys who lived ( John, Wilfred and Alfred) and at least 1boy and a girl that died in the Flu.Wilfred is my father, he's been gone since 1973. John and Alfred died in the mid to late 70's.

hope I can help. While searching for Commodore's from Chester, SC I came across a James Commodore in the 1910 census. Since we think those Commodores' are related to the Chester Commodores' I wrote his info down just in case I had to refer back to it. James Commodore was born around 1877. He was around 30 in the 1910 Census. He lived n Ward 7. There was also a Samuel who was 32 in 1910. Maybe you can help me. My husband's ggrandfather was Adam Commodore. He had 3 children Sallie, John, and Jessie. John is my husband's grandfather. He married Nanie McClure. They had 9 children. Do you have any information on plantation owners in Charleston? Is Adam in your info. Hope you can help.

Unfortunately I was never able to meet him, being born in 1957 to his son, Cecil Commodore and Annie Cox. I grew up at St. George's Lake near SharbotLake, Ontario. My cousin Betty Lake, had put together a family tree, I attended the reunion last July at the lake. She would be better able to answer any questions you might have concerning Uncle Joe.
