Sarah Comstock m. Daniel Tuttle ca. 1628, CT..daughter Elizabeth b. 1730

Trying to track down the parents of Sarah Comstock, b. ca. 1700-1709, married Daniel Tuttle and lived in Mansfield, CT.
There was one marriage listed in Haddam, in the Barbour records..of a Sarah and Daniel marrying in March 1628. Also in Early Connecticut Marriages, a Daniel and Sarah married in New london 14 April 1628. It seems like the Comstocks did a great job populating the New England area and they named all their kids Sarah, Daniel or Samuel or John! I've spent 3 days looking through 2 genealogy books online at ancestry and now am more confused than ever..but I DID find my cousins' Comstock line! But not the one I was looking for. Can anyone help me?
Barb

Re: Douglas and Comstock of New London

I've been researching my children's father's tree. He is descended from a Sarah Comstock and Daniel Tuttle..however, I am running into some complications as there are 2 Daniel/Sarah marriages in Connecticut in 1628. One in Fairfield County in March and one in New London in April. I thought that "our" Sarah was descended from Sarah Douglas and Samuel Comstock..making that Sarah..and also the one in Fairfield, descendents of William Comstock who came to MA in 1635, and ended up in New Haven, one of the first settlers. But that sarah supposedly was born and died in 1814. There are two Comstock histories/genealogies available on Ancestry.com to look through. That's what has confused me as neither of them supports the Sarah I'm trying to place. (But I did find that the Comstock my cousins descended from really is a "William" descendent!) Please let me know if you find out anything new. "Our" Sarah would have been born about 1700-1709..and died about 1732.

Descendants of William Comstock (1595-1683)

Looking for descendants of the sons of the immigrant William Comstock especially, John Comstock (ca 1624-bef 1680) or Daniel Comstock (1630-1683)! Both John and Daniel have proved records showing that they were indeed sons of William Comstock.

The Comstock Y-DNA Project now has Y-DNA results of three descendants of Samuel Comstock (1628-1657) and two descendants of Christopher Comstock (1635-1702).
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/comstock/default.aspx?se...

The most variants between any two of the five is only two markers and in some cases those tested are 10th cousins so there is little doubt that Samuel & Christopher, although not proved as sons of William Comstock except by circumstances, were if not brothers, then very close kin to each other, such as first cousins.

A new test kit has been ordered for a single descendant of John Comstock for comparison. There are funds available for a free 37 Marker Y-DNA test for either another descendant of John, or a descendant of Daniel.

To qualify for the free test, you must be a male descendant, still carrying the Comstock surname, and can demonstrate your ancestral line back to either John and Daniel, sons of the immigrant William Comstock.

However, any male carrying the Comstock surname is also welcome to join the Project. If you do not know your connection to the family of William Comstock, the test would tell you if you should continue to search for ancestors in this family, or look elsewhere. You can read more about the Project here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/comstock

The Y-DNA test is a simple swab of the inside of your cheek; the results are very private, being identified in the Project only by a kit number. Please contact me for more information.

Kay Haden
khaden1959@gmail.com
Administrator, Comstock Y-DNA Project

Comstock DNA Project

So far three men have had Y-DNA tests done for the Comstock DNA Project at FamilyTree DNA. They are all descendants of Samuel Comstock [1628-1657] of Rhode Island, probable son of the immigrant William Comstock who died in New London, CT, about 1683. As would be expected they are very close matches - two are perfect matches at 37 markers, the third has only a single variation. The results can be viewed here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/comstock

I have a donor willing to pay for a test for a male who still has the surname Comstock and can demonstrate his lineage, with some certainty, back to any of the other sons of William Comstock:
Daniel [1630-1683] who married Palthiah Elderkin
John [1624-bef 1680] who married Abigail Chappel
or the supposed son Christopher [1635-1702], who married Hannah Platt, and about whom there is some dispute.

There is currently a sale at FamilyTree DNA with prices effective until midnight December 31st, if you order the test as part of a surname project.

Please understand the test is simply a swab of the inside of a cheek - completely painless. The kit comes with everything needed including the envelope to return the test to FamilyTree DNA. The test is confidential, identified by a Kit number - you have access to your own private website with your results and your own password. The results are posted within the Project only by the Kit number. This DNA test for genealogy cannot be used for other purposes - it is completely different from DNA tests for medical or criminal purposes.

If you have further interest or questions, please email me direct.

Kay Haden
khaden1959@gmail.com
Comstock DNA Project Administrator.

I am doing a favor for a friend of mine who lost his paperwork in a house fire. His full name is Walter Graham Comstock, son of Edward Comstock and Phyllis Cooper. He doesn't remember any dates or the names of his grandparents and thinks he might be distantly related to Henry T P Comstock. Any information would be helpful.

Please feel free to contact me directly at mikeglsc@yahoo.com

Michael Green

Does your grandmother have any pictures of Francis or any of his children? I have a picture of my greatgrandfather Herman, but would love to have pictures of his brothers or sisters? I think it really helps to put a face to a name. Would your grandmother be willing to share info about Francis's children, their wives and their children? I have some info, but it always helps to verify information from someone who is a direct descendant.
Thanks in advance,
Sharon

Winnie Ann Hardin, b. about 1775, d. 1818, Breckinridge Co, KY, was the daughter of Capt. William Hardin & Winifred Ann Holtzclaw. Winnie married William Comstock, 1 May 1794, Hardin Co, KY - one of the first marriages in that county. William was born Smithfield, RI, about 1770, died just prior to Winnie Ann, 1818, Breckinridge Co KY. William was the son of Daniel Comstock & Patience Jenckes. William's line goes back to the son Samuel of the immigrant ancestor William. William & Winny Ann left three children, two still quite young. They were my 4th great grandparents.

Samuel Oliver, son of William Comstock & Rachel Aldrich, is of the same Comstock heritage. This William, b.ca 1740, d. after 1810 in St. Martin Parish LA and was the son of David Comstock & Deborah Brown. These two William Comstocks, both of whom lived in Kentucky at some point in their lives were kin is several different ways - back through the Brown and Comstock lines. The were 2nd cousins, once removed, in the Comstock line.

Please do not confuse these two families.

Leaves of the Tree - Comstock link
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~katy/

Re: Truman Comstock SMITH

I am researching Oliver Comstock Smith (1782 - 1823) who was the proven son of Enoch Smith (circa 1760 - ) of Lyme and his wife Eunice Comstock of the North Parish of New London. Oliver was born at Lyme (VR) in 1782: “Oliver Comstock Smith, Son of Enoch & Eunice Smith was born June 2nd 1782”. He was obviously the eldest son and the only child born at Lyme to Enoch Smith and this Eunice Comstock.

Enoch Smith served in the American Revolution and enlisted at Lyme. (see, The Record of Connecticut Men in the Military…, Connecticut Historical Library, p. 16).

Oliver Comstock Smith who was born in 1782 at Lyme, married at Duanesburgh, Schenectady around 1800 and lived there till 1813 when he removed to Quaker Lake in the township of Silver Lake, Susquehanna County, PA (just south of Binghamton, NY); He and his wife Mille Briggs were Quakers; in 1819 he removed to Cincinnati, OH.

During the American Revolution, the parents of Oliver Comstock Smith (1782 – 1823), Enoch Smith of Lyme married Eunice Comstock 18 MAR 1777; the marriage was officiated by the minister Joshua Morse of the North Parish in Montville, New London.

Source: Lyme, CT Vital Records, 1667-1852; Title: The Barbour Collection of Connecticut Town Vital Records. Author: Lillian Bentley Karlstrand, and Lorraine Cook White; Publication: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore, Maryland; Page: pg 54.

The birth of Oliver Comstock Smith was recorded in Lyme in 1782, but it is probable that Enoch Smith removed to New York after the American Revolution where Oliver married Milliean Briggs before 1805.

An interesting record occurs in the Vital Records of Lyme:
“To John Lay, 2nd Esquire, these may Certifie, that Enoch Smith of Lyme and Eunice Comstock of New London County, was Lawfully Married togeth by me this 18th day of March, 1777; Joshua Morse Minister of the Gospel in New London North Parish; Joshua Morse;

Note: The New London, North Parish was the parish for the town of “Montville” where the descendents of Daniel Comstock lived, including his son “John Comstock” who was married to Eunice Stoddard. Their daughter supposedly married "James Smith" but this might be an error. This Eunice Comstock had a brother named "Oliver Comstock".

I have seen many postings on who could be the parents of Eunice Comstock who married Enoch Smith of Lyme. Including John Comstock of the North Parish, Moses Comstock of Smithfield, and "Oliver Comstock, a Mariner" (DAR papers of a descendent).

I would be interested in viewing the Comstock Book you mentioned because of the information about Cincinnati which was mentioned by you.

I believe that your Eunice Comstock (Moses) who married an Enoch SMith in Broome, NY, is different than Eunice Comstock (John) who married Private Enoch Smith in Lyme in 1777 but that they have been confused.

Hope someone can help.

Oliver Comstock Smith (1782 - 1823)

I am researching "Oliver Comstock Smith" who was born in Lyme, New London, CT in 1783 (VR) - son of "Enoch Smith" and "Eunice Comstock".

Oliver Comstock Smith married Milliean Briggs of Pawling and Duanesburg, NY (daughter of Oliver Briggs). The couple removed from Duanesburg around 1813 and went to Silver Lake, Pennsylvaania. Oliver Briggs was a Quaker and many of his children removed to Silver Lake.

Oliver C. Smith was a builder and joiner. He lived in Pennsylvania until 1819 when he removed to Cincinnati. He died in Cincinnati in 1823. His wife Millie [Mille] is buried in Cincinnati.

Enoch Smith c. 1756 served as a private in the American Revolution from Lyme, married Eunice Comstock in Montville/Lyme in 1777. I have seen posts that "Eunice Comstock" was the daughter of "Moses Comstock" but I think she is more likely the daughter of "John Comstock" of the North Parish who was married to Eunice Stoddard. They had a daughter Eunice who reportedly married "James Smith" but it is more likely that this was "Enoch Smith" of Lyme. This Eunice Comstock had a brother, "Oliver Comstock".

DAR records state that the father of Eunice Comstock was "Oliver Comstock, the Mariner" but I can find no such Oliver.

Thank you for any assistance.

Saly

Yates Comstock --- son of John H. Comstock --? Rensselaer County, New York

Need to identify and document the parentage and children of Yates Comstock, son of John H. Comstock. Believe his mother to be a daughter of Jacob P. Yates and wife, Mary Rowland, of Pittstown, Rensselaer County, New York.

Samuel Yates, a son of Jacob P. Yates of Pittstown, New York, was born 8 Sept 1809, Pittstown, is buried in Yates Cemetery, Rensselaer County, New York.

Samuel Yates made his will 2 Nov 1846 in Rensselaer County, and died 20 Nov 1846 at the age of 37 years. His will bequeaths a legacy to a nephew, Yates Comstock, son of John H. Comstock. Rensselaer Surrogate Court, Will Bk 37:154

This document suggests that Samuel Yates had a sister who was the wife of John H. Comstock. As she is not named in this will, it is possible she may be deceased at this time.

Any information that will help in identifying and documenting Yates Comstock and his family will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, my mother died in 1992. The only other thing she told me that might help is that my father was sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds from Leadville. I'm not sure exactly when that would have been, my mother found that out while a dispute about child support was going on. The Army was sending my mother a check every month and then for some reason they stopped. It never did get resolved and the support ended. If you would like, you can email me directly.

What we came to know is that my father was married briefly and divorced before marrying my mother. His father's name was Errol and his mother's name was Lucy. He was born in Lakota, ND and from the stories, left his home during the depression and joined a traveling road show or something like that. Then joined the army. Would your mother be able to verify anything for you?

Needless to say, this is all somewhat of a surprise to me. According to my mother, my father was stationed in Leadville CO when they married (1944/45). I was born in Denver and I never knew him at all. Since my mother was somewhat sparse with details, the only accurate info I have had came from my birth certificate. I did have a Bible with his name embossed on the cover and the inscription: 'May this ever be your guide through life'. Just signed Mom & Dad. A few years ago, I spent some time on the internet looking, but never turned up anything to speak of. An address in MI is about all. Could we be talking about the same person?

Hi - thanks for answering. The Delbert Comstock I know was born in North Dakota ( 1921), was in the army for 20 years and lived in New Jersey as an adult. He was my father and raised us there. He was one of 11 siblings. Does this sound right to you? You don't say if your father was there during your childhood. We assumed North Dakota but could be wrong.

Loren

I'm actually Judy Hile Grubb...also the 3 G granddaughter of Jacob Lasher. I've been working on the name of Betsy Comstock's mother. Have you seen the name Winny Ann Hardin? I found it in someone's tree, and when I googled her, it came up, but had her married to William Comstock. Thanks for your posting...had some new infor for me. Would love to share info with you.

Re: William Comstock b. 1595 in England

There are some important things to remember about William Comstock. I have never seen proof of his birth. Although some have believed they found a baptism in England - there is nothing to prove it is the SAME PERSON. Since he appeared in New England by 1640, it is most likely William Comstock was from England.
His wife was Elizabeth, but I have never found proof that her surname was actually Daniel. Neither does proof exist in the manuscript collection of John A. Comstock. Some insist she was a second wife because of the phrase "now wife". However, in New England that was simply a legal phrase to indicate the man was at the present time married - he could have been married once or ten times, but she was at that moment in time his wife. Daniel/Daniels is a "suggested" surname for her. She could have been the mother of all of William Comstock's children, or none of them.
Only two of the five children presented in the John A. Comstock book "The Comstock Family in America" have documentary proof. Two of the grandsons of William, one a son of William's son Daniel and one a son of William's son John, sold a tract of land that had belonged to their grandfather, William Comstock, as stated in the deed. Samuel is presumed to be a son, proved only by circumstance and his relationship to Daniel. There is even less proof for Chistopher.
I am the administrator of the Comstock DNA Project at
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/comstock/
and so far only two descendants of Samuel have been tested. I would encourage male descendants of William, John, and Christopher, who still bear the surname Comstock, to be tested, and we could perhaps confirm the probability that Samuel and Christopher were also sons of William Comstock.
