BUTTS, one of the pioneers of Rockdale township, Hand county,
and who has witnessed its development from the first, is a prosperous
farmer and land owner, residing on section 5 of the above named
township.

Mr. Butts was born in Delaware county, New York, April 16, 1838. His
parents, Jacob S. and Lucinda (Johnson) Butts, were natives of New York
and were farming people. They went to Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin, in
1848, where the father died in 1859. The mother has since died in the
same county. They were the parents of eleven children, eight sons and
three daughters, two of the sons besides our subject now residing in
South Dakota. The grandfather, Martin Butts, was a New Yorker.

Delos G. Butts was reared and educated in Wisconsin, where he followed
farming until 1861. In April of that year he enlisted in Company D,
Third Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. This regiment was attached to the
Army of the Potomac, and our subject was stationed at Harper's Ferry at
the time the first battle of Bull Run was fought. He was later at the
battle of Cedar Mountain, and participated in considerable skirmishing
and many small engagements. He was discharged for disability and
returned to Wisconsin after about one year's service. He engaged in
farming there, and in 1865 removed to Fillmore county, Minnesota, where
he resided until his removal to Hand county, Dakota, in 1882. He took
land in section 5, Rockdale township, built a substantial house and has
continued to reside there ever since. He-made a success of farming and
stock raising almost from the first and has a valuable property, well
improved and provided with conveniences for carrying on a successful
business.

Mr. Butts was married in 1865 to Miss Anna L. Conan, a native of the
province of Prince Edwards, Dominion of Canada, and a daughter of
Dennis and Mary (Armstrong) Conan. Her parents were natives of Ireland.
To Mr. and Mrs. Butts have been born six children, upon whom they have
bestowed the following names: William, Claude, Frank, Clearmont, Luane
and Bernice, all of whom are now living. Mrs. Butts is a communicant of
the Catholic church. Mr. Butts holds membership in the Grand Army of
the Republic and in political sentiment is a Republican. He has taken
much interest in local political matters and has from time to time
filled most of the township offices. He has been one of the county's
most substantial and worthy citizens since the earliest days, and is
well known throughout the county and is held in highest respect by all
who know him. After his many years of labor and careful management he
now contemplates taking up his residence in the city of Miller, where
he may live in retirement.

Would love to see if anyone has pictures of the headstones or copies of the death reports, etc.

Thank you.

Kelly

There are simple stones in the GAR cemetery in Miller, SD with Dennis and Mary Conan's headstones. I will have to see if I can locate those pictures. They were taken several years ago when I still lived in Wyoming and have since moved to Iowa.

Mark Bennett - Asbury, IA

Hi Mark,

I've come upon your post and am interested in Dennis and Mary Conan. I've been contacted by a descendant who is looking for their graves. I live near Saratoga, MN where she thought they would be buried, but I see that you have them in the GAR cemetery in Miller SD. I've seen your photos of the Butts stones on findagrave - are there also pictures of Dennis & Mary's stones?
Are you able to help me find this descendent's ancestors final resting place? Is there anymore information concerning them in Hand County? Thanks so much and thanks for your sharing on findagrave!
Janis

However, someone that knows Ireland research has told me that I now need to fly over there to finish my research.

Also could you email me the pictures you have of the tombstones there in the GAR Cemetery. Denis & Mary Conan and Anna & Delos Butts. I would gladly share picture of the tombstone of each of them.
I tried to email you directly but it failed.
Re: Dennis Conan

I too have a Denis or Dennis Conan in my family.
According to the various U.S. Census he was born abt. 1808-1811 in Ireland. Denis dies after 1880 in Minnesota.

His father was Jeremiah or Jerome Conan born between 1760-1773 in Dublin, Ireland. His mother is Catherine Kennedy also born in Ireland. She died Dec 1846 in Canada West (now Ontario). Married about 1807 in Ireland.

The Conan's had 3 children that have been documented thus far.
Denis Conan, Francis Daniel Conan and Ann or Anna Conan.

Denis marries Mary Armstrong the 1st of November 1837 in Canada West. (Mary Armstrong is born about 1814 in Ireland and dies Jan 1874 in Saratoga, Winona, Minnesota).

Denis and Mary have 6 children:
Jeremiah born 27 Nov 1838 in Wellington, Upper Canada(not sure if this is a county or town). He marries Bridget Coragan.
Ann born abt 1842 in Wellington, Canada West
Catherine M born abt 1844 in Canada West. She marries Chauncey M Butts.
John born abt 1846 in Canada West. He marries a Margaret.
Francis born abt 1851 in Canada West
Mary Loretta born 11 March 1854 in Canada West. She marries William Henry O'Larey (changed from O'Leary). They married on 27 August 1876 in Saratoga, Winona, Minnesota. They had a whole slew of children. This is also the line that I come from.

Francis Daniel born abt 1808-1818 in Ireland he dies in Superior Wisconsin 5 May 1886. He was married to Winifred McMahon and they had 9 children.

Ann or Anna born abt 1812 in Ireland and she dies 9 Jan 1902 but I don't know where. She married Thomas McMahon (probably the brother of Winifred). However, I have not found them in any of the Census records for the U.S.

Some of the Conan family immigrates to the U.S. between 1856 and 1860. They are listed in the 1860 Census in Wisconsin. 1870 some migrate to Minnesota.

If this sounds remotely like your family please let me know.

Thanks.

Kelly
