Hi Cindy!

Very excited to read your post.

My cousin & I have worked on the CONGDON family from Putnam, Washington Co. NY for many years. We didn't have much on Almira, other than the possiblity of a marriage to a BRADLEY (not even sure if we knew the first name until recently). Then, about a month ago, a friend who has an interest in this CONGDON family but is not related told us about finding Harvey and Almira in the 1855 Census. In their household is David CONGDON, Almira's father. Have you seen this? Here is the link if you haven't: http://washington.nygenweb.net/1855CensusFortAnnDist4.htm

We have David CONGDON and Susanna BARNS as Almira's parents and this is from David CONGDON's bible. (Birthday is April 1, 1822. Looks like originally was entered as March 1st, then changed to April.)

I see you have Almira listed as a descendent of John TANNER and Susanna BARNS. What relationship do you have for these two people to Almira?

We did find this family in WI for a while and then later in Kansas. One son stayed in WI where he married. It appears that Harvey prob. died in Kansas and possibly Almira did too, some time after 1900. She had 5 kids and in 1900 two were living, Ira being one of them. I think we have all the kids names, but I can't locate my papers at the moment to give you all their names.

We would be thrilled to share and help each other to fill in blanks.

On the census link I sent, you will see James CONGDON, he is Almira's brother and Christiana STEPHENS (also found as STEVENS, STEVES) is a sister. We are descendents of Hannibal CONGDON who came to WI in the 1840s with his brother Isaac and their families.

Please feel free to contact us direclty:
Unette
unette@aol.com
Connie
congdon@ticon.net

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Unette
P.S. We both currenly reside in WI. Where are you and through which child of Almira's do you descend?

I am looking for information on ALmira Congdon who was born in 1814 in N.Y., married about 1835, had a daughter, Lyda in 1842 in N.Y. She was living with her married daughter (Lyda Seymour) in the 1880 Cuyahoga CO, Cleveland, Ohio census. I don't know Almira's maiden name. If you think this might be a match please contact me at lynn4music2hotmail.com
Thanks!
Lynn Cooper

Hi!,
Do you have any stray David Congdons in your Nova Scotia bunch who might have wandered back to NYS?

We have a David CONGDON b. abt 1780 married Susanna BARNS/BARNES in Oct. 1800. Then living in Clinton Co. NY, but soon after (by 1803) was living in Washington Co. NY. (Westfield, now Fort Anne and Putnam --or may have been same place put name changed when new towns were formed.)
We've been searching This couple for 20 year now for any clue on David's parents or any possible siblings; same is true for Susanna.

We continue to build by exploring their descendency and all the many female lines that have married in, but have been unsuccessful at finding out much more than we knew about either of them when we started 20 years ago! Frustrating!

If you have an accounted for David, born during the right time frame, pls. let me know. Thanks in advance.
Unette
unette@aol.com
Hi, I believe the Horace Congdon photo you have was my grandfather Harry Congdon older brother. Their father's name was Richard Congdon, who came from Cornwall England and their mother's name was Martha Jeffery who also came from England in 1880. Horace was born about 1884 in Wayne County, PA and live in Carbondale which is outside of Scranton. If you check my Congdon Fmmily Tree you can see more info on him. It would be apprecited if you could email me a copy and I will add it to my family tree.

Regards,
Harry T Congdon Harry.Congdon@att.net
Published August 1, 1912 Plainfield Journal

James F. Congdon, died on Tuesday

James F. Congdon, one of Plainfield's oldest residents and best known citizens, died at 1:35 o'clock Tuesday morning at his home following an illness of two weeks. He had been in poor health for several months, and two weeks ago suffered a shock. A second shock followed and he failed to recover.

He was born in Griswold 75 years ago and was the son of Stephen Congdon. As a young man he removed to Plainfield, where he passed the greater part of his life. Helearned the blacksmith's trade with his father and worked at this business for a short time. For the past 8 years he was employed by the New Have road as a night man at the pumping station at Plainfield. A brother, Jacob, who died five months ago was employed as day man at the station.

He was married in Plainfield to Nellie Donohue and she passed away about 12 years ago.
Hello Cuz.

The reason they came to Nova Scotia as far as I know is that they were "Planters of Nova Scotia" (there is a web site on them) and it was because of the
expulsion of the French. New Englanders were offered the land that was
left by the french and that is why they moved north.
I have lots on the lines.
Joanne

Kimberly,

Wondering if you could shed any light on your Joseph CONGDON, b. April 18, 1765 in Kingston, RI, d. March 10, 1858 Chazy, NY.

I am looking for siblings and parents for our David CONGDON, b. 1780 unknown, d. 1865, possibly Putnam, Washington Co. NY. In 1800 David was in the census in Plattsburgh NY. The only other CONGDON I've found in Clinton Co. around this time period is Mercy CONGDON married to Barzilla DOUGLASS. No connection between David and Mercy has yet been found.

David married Susanna BARNS or BARNES, October 19, 1800, not sure where but we are thinking Clinton County as that is where he appears in the census that year.

We've been working on this line for nearly 20 years and can't seem to crack the mystery of David's parents or even any siblings.

Any additional info you can provide on your Joseph would be appreciated. David and Susanna's eldest son was named Joseph.

Looking forward to hearing from you and am very willing to share and collaborate wherever possible.

Thanks,
Unette
unette@aol.com
or
unette@ticon.net

These are children that weren't mentioned in John's will if I remember correctly.

If you look at my 'Cornish Congdons' tree which is public, you'll be able to see what I've got.

James was a Private during the Revolutionary war...I think John and Henry may have served as well. However, there is something up with John because his pension number was invalidated...and Henry's pension paperwork shows a different birth year than other records show.

Affectionately, I call him 'John of the 3 wives'. I have a feeling he has a lot of responsibility for dispersement of Congdon lines throughout the years. Our branch got thin with James' grandson Henry Nichols...but we're still here!
I am looking for any information on the Congdon's in Michigan. My grandfather's name was Lloyd Beverly Congdon of Columbiaville,MI. He was born in December of 1911. His father's name was Milo Congdon also from Columbiaville. I'm not sure of his birthdate but it was in the late 1800's. He married Daisy Traver. We haven't been able to trace their history very far back. Any information would be great. My mother Beverly Ann (Congdon)Miller would love to know her ancestry.

Lee,

Very HAPPY to be able to help you and to share information!

Christiana CONGDON is the daughter of David CONGDON and Susanna BARNES or BARNS. Susannah BARN(E)S married David CONGDON 10/19/1800, though we don't know where.

I am a descendent of Christiana's brother Hannibal CONGDON who came to Wisconsin with his brother Isaac and their families in the mid-1840s. My cousin Connie and I have been researching the family since 1991.

We knew Christiana had married a McCane, but not a lot more than that.

David and Susanna's children are as follows (This is an overview and we have more complete information, but I don't have it at hand, as my cousin has our updated data....long story there):

1 - Joseph B. CONGDON (6/23/1801 - 7/11/1827) born Plattsburg, NY

2 - Electa CONGDON (3/1/1803 - 11/18/1884) born Westfield, NY, married James BACKUS & eventually moved to MN.

3 - Hiram CONGDON (4/13/1806 - 7/17/1886) Stayed in Putnam.

4 - Hannibal J. CONGDON (1/18/1809 - ?) born Fort Ann, NY, married Eliza SKINNER & moved to WI 1844.
(Note: Hannibal subsequently left his wife & 7 children in WI for the CA Gold Rush in 1850, and was never heard from again, that's another mystery!)

5 - Isaac CONGDON (4/10/1811 - 5/15/1893) born Fort Ann, NY, married 1) Sarah Woodruff 2) Eliza Woodruff, he moved to WI with Hannibal in 1844.

6 - James L. CONGDON (8/29/1813 - 1883) born Fort Ann, NY, married Eunice D. Pattison.

7 - Jane S. CONGDON (2/11/1821 - ?) born Putnam, NY

8 - Almira CONGDON (3/1/1822 - ?) born Putnam, NY

9 - Christiana CONGDON (12/25/1823 - ?) born Putnam, NY

10 - Suviah a.k.a. Sophia CONGDON (9/3/1825 - 11/25/06) born Putnam, NY, died VT. Married John B. Rickert. (Bible states name as Suviah, most later info shows Sophia.)

11 - David B. CONGDON (9/23/1827 - 4/28/1865) born Putnam, NY, married Roxanna Chamberlain Yaw.

There likely were two others, but don't believe they lived to adulthood. One may have been Suviah.

We have much more information including info on most of the children coming down.

Based on John being your gr-grandfather, that makes you 4th cousins with our parents and 4th cousin once removed to us.

We are both in Wisconsin and try to get to NYS at least once a year for research purposes. We have not done any research in Hamilton County.

Do you know why John and James moved there? You mentioned they went by way of Fort Ann, do you know where in Fort Ann? Our Hannibal & family were living in the Welch Hollow area of Fort Ann prior to coming to WI. I see John and James McCane are buried in Cedar River Cemetery, Indian Lake, along with numerous other McCanes, so I take it they stayed there and raised their families.

Do you know if John and James were the only children born to Christiana and Edward? It sounds like you don't know what happened to Christiana or Edward, is that correct? I am wondering where you came up with the exact birthdate for Christiana? We had the same date which was from the family bible.

Would love to continue to share info and resources. Are you in Indian Lake?

Feel free to contact me via email if you wish.

Very excited to find more on Christiana's line and to have another living relative of David and Susanna's who is interested in genealogy research!!

Do you have any pictures, family papers or anything like that? We have very few pictures, but over the years have managed to get copies of a few more, so are always anxious to know if anyone else has any!

Unette
unette@aol.com
or
unette@ticon.net
262-534-2144

Looking for information on Edward and Christiana Congdon McCane in Washington Co., N.Y. Edward was probably born in Ireland but where and when are unknown. Nothing is known about how he came to Washington County nor what happened to him or his wife. Christiana Congdon was born December 25, 1823 in Putnam, Washington Co., NY.

Their sons, John and James b. in 1841 and 1847 respectively in Putnam Station, Washington Co., NY, later moved to Indian Lake, Hamilton Co., NY via Fort Ann, Washington Co., NY.

DAR Record Copy No. 774793 of Hazel Adeline Congdon Lieberman shows George Congdon, born about 1740 at North Kingstown, Rhode Island; married Ann, April 3, 1764 at North Kingstown; son Jonathan Congdon, born about 1766 at North Kingstown; died October 14, 1811 at North Kingstown. (Have copy of Record Copy but no copies of documents cited in the Record Copy)

The 1840 Census of Pensioners, Revolutionary or Military Services, shows a George Congdon, age 80, North Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island. Based on this age, he would have been born about 1760 which conflicts with the LDS and DAR estimated birth year of 1740 where he he would have been 18 years younger than his first wife, and 5 years old when his first child was born. There may be two men called George Congdon in the Revolutionary War. My George Congdon, also born 1740, died in 1811 before pensions were authorized, so this George Congdon wouldn't get a pension.

This is all very confusing to me and I don't have easy access to appropriate records to do adequate research.

Bob Doughty in Seattle

I was saddened to read of the passing of your grandfather. We were friends and neighbors of Mert and Jessie at Hanford Bay many years ago but had lost track of them in recent years. It is my understanding that there will be a memorial service in the WNY area sometime soon.

I would appreciate your letting me know when and where it will be.

Fred Wood
Unette:

I am sorry. I have nothing on a Barnes or Congdon.

There was a Robert Congdon in the Greenwich area. Served in the militia. Maybe worth a look into.

Have you looked at the RI 1774 Census yet?

Jerry
Mr. Doughty:

Would you be willing to share your relative’s pension documentation?

I am compiling a list of those who served in the unit.

Here is a link to more info on the Unit - my work but not my site.

http://www.myrevolutionarywar.com/states/ri-04.htm

Have you tried the 1774 RI Census for Congdons?

Jerry

JerryL17@Hotmail.com
Do you have any children for either of these Georges? If so, would you list them?

I have a David CONGDON for whom I am looking for both parents....He was b. abt. 1780, location unknown. A Patriot would be about the right age to be his father. We have info on David coming down including wife Susannah BARNS or BARNES whom he married in Oct. 1800 and we also have their children, but no parents or siblings for either David or wife Susannah.
Thanks,
Unette

Marion, I am decended from Charles William Leake who was a brother of Isreal Elmer whose daughters married the Congdon brothers. I wrote Congdon men I found in the phone book, about 10-12 years ago. I included SASE envelopes but didn't get any answers. I have searched 22 years for the birthplace of Charles Henry Leake, father of Isreal and Charles Wm. I am putting together a genealogy for my children. Would love to hear from you.
