Sarah probably married Peter Beam around 1835 since the first child I have for them was born in 1836.

Sarah's death certificate stated she moved to Brooklyn in 1836.

She may have been married before since she was in her late 20s and one of her children's obits stated her name was Sarah Darling.

Bentons were neighbours of the Vandrick family in Alexandria, Ontario. I assume that you refer to Angus James Vandrick who was born June 21,1879. His mother was Mary Exila Lauzon. I'm trying to find out where all the Vandricks went in the 1900's. They stopped appearing in Canadian censuses. Did they all move to the U.S.A.?

I discovered a calling card from "William Conklin" and a message written on the back "to Gertie P from Bertie". I know very little about Gertrude..........only what I am finding on ancestary.com and obituaries.

Conklins (aka Coughlins) in Essex County/Morris County, New Jersey

I have been attempting to identify the parents of my ancestor, Elias Conklin (c. 1808 - 1870), who worked as a shoemaker from around 1835 to the mid- to late-1850's in Newark, New Jersey. In the process of working on this project, I discovered that several Newark Conklins, who had been born in New Jersey in the late-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, also used the "Coughlin" surname sometimes. The 1851/52 city directory for Newark provides some good examples, as follows:

George Conklin (mason), located at 5 Cottage Street, is also listed in the directory as George Coughlin (mason), located at 5 Cottage Street;
Daniel Conklin (blacksmith), and his son, Daniel F. Conklin (carpenter), residing at 31 South Essex, also appear as Daniel Coughlin (blacksmith), and his son, Daniel F. Coughlin (carpenter), residing at 31 South Essex.

Elias and Daniel came to Newark by way of Elizabeth, New Jersey. I suspect that my ancestor, as well as Daniel Conklin and a few other Conklins who were living in Newark in the first half of the 19th century, may be related to the Conklins who lived in the Pompton Plains vicinity in Morris County, New Jersey, at the end of the 18th century. Elias Conklin married Mary Ann Haulenbeck , whose parents were from Pompton, New Jersey. Mary Ann's father was Jacob Haulenbeck. Her mother was Catherine Vreeland. Daniel Conklin's family was related by marriage to the Fredericks family that also came from the Pompton Plains area. I suspect that Daniel may be the son of John "Koghelin" and Antje [Anne] Frederiks of Pompton Plains, born on 21 March 1794, and baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Pompton Plains. Daniel's eldest daughter, Ann, later married Nicholas Fredericks. Pompton Plains is in Morris County, New Jersey, where there are Conklins who also appear under the surname "Coughlin." My search for Conklins in Morris County and surrounding areas, such as Orange County and Rockland County, New York, has barely begun. I am beginning to suspect that the search for the parents of Elias Conklin of Newark may lead me to descendants of the "Westchester Conklins."

Not knowing where Elias belonged in terms of the three pre-colonial Conklin family lines, I kept what records I picked up along the way in case they might relate to Elias. As part of the process of sorting out these records, I created a Conklins of Essex County Timeline for Conklin/Coughlin family members who lived in Elizabeth[town], Westfield, Springfield, Newark, and Livingston, New Jersey, to try to get a better sense of who lived where at particular points in time. This timeline includes all of the sources that I used in compiling the information. I also created web pages for maps that show the location of various Conklins and Coughlins who were living in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, based on the city directories for Newark for the years 1835, 1838, 1840, and 1851.

To link to the Conklin Family Timeline as well as the maps, visit http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~njconklins. I have been able to identify some of the Essex County, New Jersey Conklins as members of one of the three pre-colonial Conklin family lines. Others, such as Elias, remain a mystery. Many dots, but few connections!

I hope those of you who have hit your own Conklin/Coughlin brick walls as you seek your Essex County, New Jersey roots may find some clues to your puzzles here.

After statehood, each township was to have an official that was in charge of mowing the roads and maintaining a cemetery. Most twps only had 1 cemetery, but some had individuals, churches or towns that would start another one. Your family site was probably a private one and after all these years has no one to maintain it.
So, it is up to the family, church, individual, etc. to keep it up.
Good luck. I was looking for Konklins when I found this.

Hester A. Boults Tyler Conklin was the Dau. of Cornelius and Catherine Boults. Both she and her second husband, Alsop T (or J dpending on how you read the script) are buried in Conklin Hill Cemetery. I understand the original church burned and a second church was built. The cemetery began as a Conklin (Concklin) family cemetery and there are people buried there that there are no records for. Families at this time were also allowed to have burials on their own property. The land for the church was donated by William Boults (son of Elias) a nephew of Hesters. The Conklins, Tylers and Keeslers were large families and among the settlers that came from Ct. also the Bush, Skinners, Calkins, Thomases. Other Cemeteries in the area are Hillside in Damascus, Overlook & the Milanville Cemetery. I have been working on the Boults as Nancy, one of Hester's older sisters is an ancester of mine.

Hi Carol again - here is the result of some quick research done on Ancestry.com.

On the 1850 census, Joseph and Catherine (Smith) Conklin have the five children we have previously discussed: Eli, Mary (Merry), Wm J (Iowa), Sylvanus and Flora. Ancestry.com transcribes the record as Wm J. I have looked at the record and agree but there is room for error.

On the 1860 census, Catherine has remarried and Wm J is recorded as Iowa. I make this assumption as the children are listed in order and the birth year is the same for both. Little room for error.

I did not find him on the 1870 census so I will need to look at the actual records rather than trust the search engine.

On 1880 census he is living in Harrison, Scioto, Ohio and married to Amanda. Titus appears to be Amanda's married name as there are two children Mary Titus, age 6 and Edward Titus, age 2 in the family. Is she divorced, widowed or possibly had two children without marrying - I don't know.

On the 1910 census Iowa is listed as Wm Irwa (Wm Iowa) Conklin and is living in Portsmouth, Ward 4. He is listed as widowed

On 1920 census he is living in the household of Allan Conklin and is listed as father of Allan. His name is recorded as Iowa W. Conklin. Also on 1920 census, Iowa's father is listed as born in New Jersey. All prior census shows Ohio when the question was recorded. Also on the 1860 census he is recorded as being female. I love census records. They keep you on your toes.

His death record is also on Ancestry.com and shows 28 Oct 1926. You had a burial date of 1 Nov 1926 which seems realistic for the two dates.

There is also another Iowa Conklin on the 1860 census recorded in the house of Jacob Wollom in Porter, Scioto, Ohio. Possibly the same person just visiting on census day?????

Was any of this useful to you?

Gary
ok...where to start.
no problem with Merry/Mary.
Wm Iowa Conklin possibly got his middle name this way:

His mother, Catherine, was a daughter of John and Peggy Smith. Catherine's brother, Eli,married Emmeretta Noble in Lawrence co, oh.
Emmeretta's sister, Mary Ann, married Elza Hall, in Lawrence co, oh, and she and her family all went out to Iowa with other family branches.

Mary Ann, died between 1844 and 1850, had 4 children.
She may have died having her last child.

I think that Catherine named her son William Iowa Conklin to honor Mary Ann and the family in Iowa. Just a real, but entirely possible, stretch for an answer. This family was really tight and their children's names were passed around a lot. Joseph and Catherine's first child, Joseph Eli...the Eli came from Catherine's brother, mentioned earlier. Eli and Emeretta are my direct line.

Anyway, I have family sheets and some documents but it is on Joseph and Catherine's children...sorry.

Will be glad to share that.
Carol

Carol - the 1850 census for Green Twp, Scioto County, Ohio shows Joseph and Catherine Conklin's children as Eli, Merry (probably correctlt as Mary), Wm J, Sylvanus and Flora. Is it possible that William J actually had the nickname of Iowa vs his actual middle name being Iowa? I know there are lots of errors on census records and this is not my direct line - just asking.

Carol - great to hear from you. My line is down from Useba Conklin who was your Joseph's sister. I have 5 children for your Joseph: Eli, Merry A, William J, Sylvanus and Flora. I have spouse only for Sylvanus. He married Mary Ann Monroe. I am looking for info going back from William and Mary Conklin who were the parents for your Joseph and my Useba. My original posting contained just about all the info I know on their ancestors. I can send you a little more detail if you want - let me know. You can write direct at garyhat@att.net

Daniel Mapes

I am looking for the connection between Isabelle Beatrice Pines Liviccori and the Mapes and Conkling line. She was my mother-in-law. I have her DAR application which was accepted on October 20, 1948. The lineage goes back 6 generations: Daniel Conkling Jr. married Susanah Roe and they had a daughter named Susan Conkling, who married Daniel Mapes(the 2nd). I need to know who Daniel Mapes the 1st was? Who he married? Also, the dates do not make sense Daniel Mapes (the 2nd) was born in August, 1877, in Goshen, New York and died in Monticello, New York on May 29, 1861. Any help anyone can give me with this firewall, I would greatly appreciate.
