I think the nearest thing to an answer as to who Samuel Conn's ancestors were will be indicated by the Conn DNA program. Some male descendant(s) of Samuel with the Conn surname needs to provide a dna sample to the program. i think the sample is just a swab from the mouth.

Re: Conn's

May I introduce my John Conn b. ca. 1795 most likely in Lee County, VA. He was the SON of Samuel Conn and Hannah Ely. (I DO NOT KNOW THE PARENTS OF SAMUEL!) Family researchers have labeled Samuel as "the Drover" to distinguish him from Samuel Conn who was approximately the same age, but lived most of his life in KY. My Samuel Conn was supposedly killed in 1806 while traveling to his patent land. After he disappeared, the Conn and Ely family essentially packed up and traveled to/thru KY and ended up in Union/Franklin Counties, IN. The young'uns married there. John Conn, his wife Lucretia Clary & his young family continued on to Rush County (1830), then to Cass/Fulton (1840). His brother William went to Montgomery County, IN & other brother Adam Eli Conn went to Henry County and those brothers multiplied. However, John, Lucretia & 4 of their 7 children disappeared. Poof! I am responding to you because Newton is 2 Counties West of Cass/Fulton. If anything sounds familiar, please advise.
I am at my genealogy computer now and I have Margaret Jane (Forde) Turkington's death as Sep 1, 1908. The information comes from a handwritten letter to her daughter, Charlotte, from another daughter, Maria, who was in Ireland and who attended the funeral.

I was wondering if you had an obituary for your GGrandfather James? In my records, he could have been the first of those brothers and sisters here in the US to pass away. I am curious to know if his sister Sarah Josephine Staiger or Furman is mentioned in the obituary.

I am not in CT and only have access to historical Hartford Courant up to 1922. If anyone else is reading this and has Hartford Courant access for 1948, James died on Sep 8 of that year in Manchester. I would sincerely appreciate the effort.

Karen F.

Hi, Somehow I wasn't notified of this message when you wrote it back in December.

I'm not sure I understand your question about James' father's maiden name as Ford, but your GGrandfather (James) parents were James and Margaret Jane Forde. I'm still looking for a copy of the marriage record, but I have notes from Charlotte's son (Walter) of her parents. I tried to message you through Ancestry but was unsuccessful. Email me at gene dot seeker at yahoo dot com. I'd love to exchange more information.
Karen F.

Hi, I am a descendant of James Turkington, son of James and Margaret Jane (Forde) Turkington. He is my great grandfather. He did indeed emigrate to the U.S.--to Manchester, CT, and is buried there. He married Sarah Jane Dougan, also of Armagh Co., NI. (b. 1877, d. 1947). They had four children, William John Turkington Sr. (my grandfather, b. 1906 in CT), Evelyn, Marion, and Austin. I just found out his mother's name (Margaret Jane Forde). I was told many years ago by great aunt Marion (daughter of James) that she thought the maiden name for James' father was "Ford". I never saw the proof until yesterday online. Do you have any more info on James (Sr) and Margaret Turkington? I have James as born 1846. I'm guessing Margaret died between 1901 and 1911 as she was present in the 1901 census, but not in the 1911.

If this is in regards to Samuel b/12 Jun 1809 (d/ 3 Nov 1873 Conn's Creek, Cherokee Co, GA) who m/ Elizabeth Ingram ( Oct 1813, Franklin Co, GA-20 Mar 1899, Conn's Creek, Cherokee Co, GA) on 11 Apr 1830 in Hall Co, GA, I am not certain if he was born in NC or GA. I have possible birth places as either Person Co, NC or Hall Co, GA.

I believe Samuel to be the son of John B. Conn (1767, SC - 4 Feb 1809, Franklin Co, GA) & his wife Elizabeth (b/ ca 1767). I don't think that has yet been proven, so you should verify & research it yourself to be sure. If that is the case, then Samuel would be born a few months after his father's death, which of course was possible. That would make Elizabeth a little old to be his mother if her birth year is right, but her birth year may only be an estimate based on her husband's. (I appear to be missing some of my notes since my genealogy database conversion).

I have another Samuel Conn who was son of a different John & Elizabeth. (Her maiden name may have been Boling?). That Samuel was born before 1800 & died after Oct 1822 in Franklin Co, GA. If accurate (you should verify of course), I show his dad John b/ bet 1750 and 1760, d/bef Feb 1801 m/ Elizabeth ca 1780 and Elizabeth was born bet 1750 & 1760 and died after Oct 1822 in Franklin Co, GA.

Some have even theorized that these Samuel, John & Elizabeths are one and the same. IF SO, then that John's children MAY be the following:

1) Dr. John b/1794 who m/Anna Smith (and had son Simeon A. b/1824 who went to AL and who married Lyons) & had Sarah Ann who m/Elisha E. Gentry (his 2nd wife after marrying Elizabeth Conn who may have also been their daughter)
2) Joseph b/1805 GA and who m/Hannah (LNU). (*could she have been a Smith (as related to above Anna?) or an Ingram (as related to below) or even a Holcomb?)
They had son Simon S. who m/Alsrey Gentry (presumed sister of Elisha E. Gentry above).
3) Samuel b/1809 m/ Elizabeth Ingram.
They had Alsie Elizabeth (elsewhere seen as Elsie) who m/Bedney Franklin (BF) Holcomb.

This would make 3 brothers: Dr. John b/1794, Joseph b/1805, Samuel b/1809.

Dr. John and Joseph came to Alabama (Marshall and Etowah / St. Clair nearby areas) whereas Samuel stayed in and was buried in (Conn's Creek), Cherokee Co, GA.

Joseph m/ Hannah is my ancestor & other than the above theory, I have no other evidence or theories as to who his parents may be.

These Conns are definitely hard to sort out that's for sure.

I haven't worked on the line in quite some time.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help & I hope I haven't confused you, but hopefully together we can all sort these Conns out.

--Briana

Rev. Hugh CONN is not of the Aberdeenshire, SCT lineage. Neither is the England line connected to Rev. Hugh CONN. So forget that if you have been sent that info.
Rev. Hugh C. ancestors were from Ayrshire, SCT according to a CONN living in Magilligan until his death a few years ago. I made 2 visits to him before his death. I have his documentation back to Thomas CONN b.1745 d. 17 Apr 1823 and have seen his grave in the original cemetery - not the 'new' church/cemetery in Magilligan. The old cemetery and church is now owned by the Catholic Church.
Also a 2d documented DNA to a John CONN b. 1754 Ayrshire. If not a direct connection to Rev. Hugh CONN it is a close connection which would prove Rev. Hugh's ancestors there as told by the CONN living in Magilligan. He mentioned it had been passed down in his family a young man walking from Magilligan to the port for a boat to Glasgow to attend the university. I have a copy of Hugh CONNs signature at the university and a picture of the portion of the original univeristy that has been moved to the existing university.
In past correspondence with John Carr we were never able to have a documented connection, but the possibility is there.

Jean - bgw3133@aol.com

Hello:

Frederick Conn was my great-grandfather; my grandmother was the daughter of Frederick and Mary, her name was Louis Pearl Conn, married to Dr. John B. Vigle. We have MANY photos of the family dating back to the 1890s and even earlier. As far as I know we received just about everything that was left by Frederick and Mary Conn (passed down through both daughters, but they also had a son, Charles, who died at age 26 from a rattlesnake bite, tragic story), including furniture and Frederick's Hamilton railroad watch, etc. Would love to hear from you, although your message dates from 2005, hope to hear from you - Thanks - Greg Vigle

CONN Marriages in Fulton County, Indiana

If your ancestors were listed as having been married in Fulton County, Indiana prior to 1920, it is quite likely that you are a descendant of either Vachel Clary Conn b. 1819(and Angeline Armstrong)OR Joseph C. Conn (and Lovina Brubaker). I believe Vachel & Joseph were brothers, sons of John Conn b. 1795 & Lucretia Clary. John started a Chair & Spinning Factory on the Michigan Road at the Fulton/Cass County border in 1834. Please contact me and help me confirm that Joseph and Vachel were brothers. I am also looking for Mary, Clayborn & Artie (missing children of John & Luc. linjohnbee@aol.com

I am also a descendant of John Conn of Groton, Massachusetts through his son George. I recently participated in an autosomal DNA test and found that I had quite a few matches in the South. This was quite a surprise since I have NO ancestors in the South. The only connection I can come up with is through John Conn.

So I'd love to see "South Carolina Descendants of John Conn of Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts".

Thanks much!

John Conn of Magellian and Rose Aken, m. Scotland 1707, and John Conn, died in 1758 at 76, so he would have been born in 1682, and Roseanna Conn of Groton, Massachusetts could be the same people as has been long speculated. John and Roseanna's eldest son was born in 1712. 1707 to 1712 is a big gap, but not impossible. We don't actually know if he was the first child they had.

A YDNA test of a male direct paternal line descendant from John Conn could reveal the probability that John Conn and Hugh Conn share the same paternal line. There are direct paternal line descendants of John Conn living, but I do not find any descendants of John Conn in the Conn YDNA project at FTDNA, so the mystery remains.

I am aware that John Conn of Groton traveled to South Carolina with his son Thomas and bought land there. My cousin (mostly him) and I have uncovered many records in South Carolina. Mary Gazelle Hoffman published a history on the descendants of John Conn in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register vol. LXXXI, January 1927. Some of the later dates are clearly transcribed incorrectly, but much of the early information can be verified in public records.

John, Put in google: the Irish and Scottist background of the rev. Hugh Conn, A google book will come up with this information. It will give you much information about the Conn family history including John Conn of Groton Mass. It will be one of several titles listed. You will be able to read the publication but not copy it. You can also get much information by listing Conn family history on google. You will find Alex Conn's history of the Conn Family. He and Clark have shared information. If you will email me and give your address, I will send you a copy of the report on John Conn'S connection to the SC Conns, Let me know if you have trouble with directions. Good luck, WTC

My name is Jesse McDaniel and I am a descendant of Allen Walker McDaniel, who married Martha Gibson Conn (widow of James Conn) in 1835. Do you have any additional information on the cemetery or tombstone inscriptions if they still exist? Any information would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Mary,

Are you still looking for information on the Craven family in Highland County, Ohio? I have worked with this line for some time. Right now is a very busy time for me, but I would like to work with you if you are still looking for that family.
I do have their children, with birth dates, etc.. My grandfather was their youngest child.

Joan C. Nixon

Hi Michael...sent you an email a few minutes ago regarding the invite to my family tree on Ancestry.com.

I believe the DRT record I looked at was probably your Mother-in-laws as hers was the only one that allowed people to make copies of her documents.

I would like to have copies of any Conn photos and documents that you have - I currently have only a few.
My email addresses are: jt70ss454@aol.com (home email) and thomase@tecowestinghouse.com (work email)

I have just now read your letter. I am sorry that I did not reply sooner. The DRT record that you accessed might very well be my mother in law, or my wife, as they are descendants of Samuel Knotely Conn. They entered on the record of John Thomas Conn, who was the father of Hugh Lee Conn. I do not know what to send you as most of what I have is already widely distributed among Conn family members. I did obtain a picture of Hugh Lee Conn's brother Napoleon Conn. Much of what I have was given by Velma Fogle who is one of the researchers who did so much to lay the foundation of Conn family research in Texas. The Gonzales County Record center has an incredible amount of material and photos on the Conns. I am certainly happy to share any photos or copies of documets that I have in my possession.

My email address is dreier9@aol.co

Betsy
Hi! Anna was the first daughter, and Isaac Newton the second son of Thomas Milton Craven and Elizabeth Conn Craven.

You said that follows the pattern, so, it looks good! The first son is Thomas Clarkson, named for his father, and the second daughter is Elizabeth, named for her mother, it looks like.

Thanks so much for your reply, I've worked with this family for years, and really not found others looking for the same information. Now it is exciting to know that there are others working on it too! If there are actual records that show this connection, I haven't found them, but between us, maybe we can, now that so much is online.

Joan

Hi Joan,

If Elizabeth is the daughter of Isaac Phillips CONN and Anna "Nancy" ZEARLEY, any record of her birth or baptism which might exist would be found in Fayette Co. PA. Isaac P. CONN moved from there to Monongalia Co. (W)VA after 1830 and then to Highland Co. OH about 1838. Isaac died in Highland Co. OH in 1869; he is buried in the New Market Baptist Church cemetery. Perhaps he left a will naming Elizabeth's children as his grandchildren?

Isaac P. CONN's children married into the VANCE and McCONNAUGHEY families, both of which also came to Highland Co. OH from Fayette Co. PA. Where did the CRAVENs come from?

Sometimes there is no documentation, and you have to go with the preponderance of circumstantial evidence. Isaac Phillips CONN was the only CONN in Highland Co. OH at the time, and he had daughters of the appropriate age. His brother Clemens CONN married Anna "Nancy" ZEARLEY's probable sister/cousin Margaret ZEARLEY and lived in Butler Co. OH, which borders Franklin Co. IN; some of Clemens CONN's children lived in Franklin Co. IN in the time frame that your Elizabeth was there.

And as you mentioned, Elizabeth had children named Isaac and Anna. If Anna was the first daughter and Isaac the second son, in keeping with the traditional naming pattern, that would nail it for me that Elizabeth's parents were Isaac Phillips CONN and Anna "Nancy" ZEARLEY. However, the naming pattern wasn't always followed exactly, leaving that nagging doubt.

After naming her first daughter after her mother, her second after her husband's mother, and her third after herself, the Scots-Irish or German woman would use the names of her sisters and sometimes her maternal grandmother.
The names of Isaac P. CONN's known daughters were: Lydia, Anna "Nancy", and Sarah Ellen. There was another daughter whose name is not known to me. 'Lydia' is an especially important name in Isaac's family - his mother was Lydia FLINTHAM and the name has been passed down for generations.

Betsy

Betsy
