Looking for Info on Ancestors of Gertrude Lillian Connor Bates

I'm looking for any information on the ancestors of my paternal grandmother Gertrude Lillian Connor Bates born 12 Jul 1896 in Wellsville, NY. Her father was John L. Connor (born abt 1867 in NY) married to Ella (Ellen) M. Ahearn (born abt 1869 in NT). The grandfather of Gertrude was David Connor (born abt 1810 in Ireland) who was married to Mary Linehan (born abt 1826 in Cork).

I've been unable to learn where in Ireland David was born or when he came to America or where he landed. I presume he came through New York.

Any help tracing the Ahearns, Connors and the Linehans would be greatly appreciated.

You can e-mail me directly at bts_chrstphr@yahoo.com.

Chris Bates

Michael CONNOR assigned to Alexander BERRY- Coolangatta and Crow's Nest Estates NSW

Michael CONNOR, convict, was assigned to Alexander BERRY and Edward WOLLSTONECRAFT in 1829. He remained in the employment of Alexander BERRY till BERRY’s death in 1873, a period of over forty four years.

Born in County Meath, circa 1800, Michael CONNOR was the son of John CONNOR and Mary KELLY. He was tried for the crime of House Robbery in Kildare Courthouse on 24th March 1828 and spent the following six months aboard the ESSEX HULK, anchored at Dún Laoghaire Harbour Dublin, then known as Kingstown, under the supervision of Dr. Edward TREVOR.

Michael CONNOR, one of 192 male Irish convicts, was transferred to the ship, SOPHIA, Thomas A. ELLEY master, on 15th September 1828, and arrived in Port Jackson on 17th January 1829.

The Convict Indent for Michael CONNOR, describes him as being a blue eyed 24 year old ploughman, 5 foot 4½ inches tall, with a ruddy and pock pitted complexion and red to sandy hair. On arrival in NSW he was assigned to BERRY and WOLLSTONECRAFT and worked as a ploughman at the Coolangatta Estate at Shoalhaven.

Around 1834 Michael CONNOR was moved to the Crow’s Nest Estate on the North Shore of Sydney. He worked as a watchman and labourer around the estate, was in charge of the estate’s timber, but mainly worked as Mr. BERRY’s boatman. Each morning and on the return journey in the evening, Michael CONNOR rowed Alexander BERRY and his attendant clerk, William George MATHEWS, across the harbour to their office in Sydney.

On 3rd June 1837, Michael CONNOR was issued a Ticket of Leave for the district of Parramatta. Alexander BERRY wrote an application to the Superintendent of Convicts, John Ryan BRENNAN, requesting the transfer of Michael CONNOR’s Ticket of Leave, from the district of Parramatta to Sydney-

I beg leave to request, on account of the good character of that individual, that his ticket may be transferred to the District of Sydney during the time he remains in my employment.
(State Records NSW; Kingswood; Index to Colonial Secretary; Container 4/ 2352 [Item 37/6365])

Alexander BERRY’s application was approved on July 12th and Michael CONNOR’s ticket of leave was subsequently changed in order to allow him to stay in Sydney-

Allowed for Sydney so long only as he remains in the services of Mr. Berry, per Colonial Secretary’s letter 37/ 577 dated 15th July 1837.
(State Records NSW; Colonial Secretary’s Letters re Convicts 1832-1842; Reel 1050 [Number 37/ 577] 15th July 1837)

On 24th October 1837, at St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, Michael CONNOR, aged 36, married Julia QUILLIGAN, aged 25, and that year Michael CONNOR helped build his cottage at Berry’s Bay.

Circumstances leading to the origin of Michael CONNOR’s cottage lay in the correspondence between William George Mathews, clerk on the Berry estate at North Sydney, and Sir John Hay-

‘Early in 1837, Mr and Mrs Berry went on a visit to Dr Gibson at Goulburn, during their absence Connor, who acted as Watchman about the old ‘Crows Nest Cottage’, courted and married one of the emigrant servant women, Julia Quillyian (sic). Mrs. Berry was so displeased and enraged that she ordered them off the premises. However, Connor induced Mr Alexr (who was always kind and forgiving to his servants) to be allowed to clear away a small patch of scrub to build a rough cabin of stone, 2 rooms, 12 x 12- two convicts not then free (Douglas, and J Smith stonemasons), were allowed to build it and Connor and his boat-mate (G Jenkins) assisting, and in the meantime, as Mrs Berry turned the woman out of her house, Connor asked me if I would kindly give up the room I occupied in the Old Store house and sleep in the loft; and being then a young man (about 22 years of age) I at once consented; in about one month, the ‘cabin’ was finished and Connor and his wife took possession. Some years after, in consequence to a large increase in his family (7 children), Mr Berry allowed him, through my intercession, to build an additional room which was granted. James Wallace who was in Mr Berry’s service @ 4/6 per diem, quarried the stones and built the addition, no doubt, Connor assisted him, but he as well as Wallace, were receiving wages and rations’…
(Mitchell Library Sydney; ML MSS 315/105; Mathews-Hay Letters; Film No CY 3739; pp 237-238, 238A and 238B)

On 1st October 1841, Michael CONNOR was granted a Conditional Pardon [Number 42/ 269] by the Governor of NSW, Sir George GIPPS. Recommendations were made by Alexander BERRY, William CARTER JP, William MILLER DCG [Descendant of Colonial Governor], Thomas WALKER and John LORD.

Michael CONNOR and Julia QUILLIGAN raised a family of seven children in their cottage at Berry’s Bay-

•	Mary MCKAY (1839-1877)
•	Michael CONNOR (1840-1889)
•	John CONNOR (1841-1884)
•	Julia COULL (1843-1918)
•	William CONNOR (1845-1926)
•	Bedelia DOUGLAS (1847-1890)
•	James CONNOR (1851-1882)

In 1859 in his defense against allegations made by the Reverend John Dunmore LANG, Alexander BERRY refuted all the accusations in a long letter to the editor of the Illawarra Mercury, later printed in the Sydney Morning Herald, in which BERRY mentions Michael CONNOR-

Michael Connor, who is now, and has been for thirty years in my employment, lately informed me that he never knew me to flog, or rather to be the means of flogging a convict; and several other persons who have been nearly as long in my service are ready to afford the same evidence.
( Sydney Morning Herald; Tuesday 22 February 1859, p 2)

In Berry’s memoires, Reminiscences of Alexander Berry, he makes reference to his boatman [Michael CONNOR] and his housekeeper [Mary CONNOR, daughter of Michael CONNOR].

But I have no more reason to complain of the Irish than of the English or Scotch, and they have often boasted that they were more faithful to me than the others were. I believe that there are at this moment upwards of one hundred and forty Irish tenants on my estate at Shoalhaven. My boatman here, originally a political offender, has been upwards of thirty years of my service, and one of his daughters, who was born at my wharf, has been upwards of a dozen of years in my service, and is now my housekeeper, but I very seldom change my servants.
(Reminiscences; Alexander Berry; W.C. Penfold & Co., Printers, 183 Pitt St, Sydney; published Angus and Robertson (1912); pp184-185)

Julia QUILLIGAN, wife of Michael CONNOR, arrived free per the DUCHESS OF NORTHUMBERLAND (1836) and worked as a housemaid to Mrs. Elizabeth BERRY in Crows Nest Cottage (1836-1837).

Mary CONNOR, eldest child of Michael and Julia, worked for Alexander BERRY for over twelve years (1855-1867) and was the principal female servant and then housekeeper at Crow’s Nest House (1867-1869).

Finlay MCKAY, husband of Mary CONNOR, originally employed by Alexander Berry in 1856 as a groom and generally useful, also acted as Mr. Berry’s coachman (1856-1873).

William and James CONNOR, children of Michael and Julia, became Mr. Berry’s boatmen in 1869.

Catherine GALLAGHER, wife of James CONNOR, had also been employed as a general servant to Mr. Berry at Crow’s Nest House (1868-1869) before her marriage in 1870.

Julia CONNOR (nee QUILLIGAN) died on 24th March 1870 at her sandstone cottage at Berry’s Bay and her husband, Michael CONNOR, died there fourteen years later on 21st July 1884.

A letter from WG Mathews to John Hay 18th July 1884 talks of Michael CONNOR’s death-

That “Delays are dangerous”, as is exemplified in the death of Michael Connor, which took place last night. I had been urging Messrs Norton & Smith, to get a paper made out for him to sign for the past five or six weeks, I called on them yesterday morning and they sent it to me at ½ past 3 o’clock- when I got home, I went over to his house, when I found him in an unconscious state, from which he never recovered, & died sometime after midnight, so some other steps will now have to be taken, I called upon Mr. Smith this morning and informed him of the event.
( Mitchell Library Sydney; ML MSS 315/105; Mathews-Hay Letters; Film No CY 3739; pp 170-172)

A letter from WG Mathews to John Hay 22nd July 1884 talks of Michael CONNOR’s burial and of his daughter in law, Catherine (nee GALLAGHER)-

Michael Connor was buried in the Catholic Cemetery, Lane Cove, on Saturday. I have not spoken to the widow of his late son, as she was drunk the night he died and the day of his burial, She was very insulting to Connor’s son, William, who called to see his father,- however it will not be advisable to let her remain in the house.
( Mitchell Library Sydney; ML MSS 315/105; Mathews-Hay Letters; Film No CY 3739; pp 179-181)

Re: William Elliott Connor (Buster)

The following information about Buster is from a journal written by a long-time Marston resident. "Ma" Connor was a sister to Elliott Sloas and a widow when most in Marston knew her. She owned a farm and ouse just north of Marston where her daughter, Victoria Griffy lived in later years. Mrs. Connor has children named Victoria, Claire, Buster and Bobby. Buster was reared in New Madrid but came to Marston as a young man. Buster ran a small cafe for many years and was a "oteen" source. He was a little man. His wife's name was Linnie. Buster and Linnie had a daughter. They raised a nice of Linnie's by the name of Darlene. Darlene married Granville Riddle from Portageville. They had a son Jimmie. Darlene and Granville did not stay married and she married "Sonny" Kenny who ws in the restaurant business. They moved to Kennett.

Hope this helps.

Not the same family. That Thomas was born to Terence Connor and Bridget Gallager on Feb 8, 1868. Our Thomas was born Oct 11, 1842. At least that's what I've managed to find.

My Connor tree stems from Timothy Connor who emigrated from Ireland to Lancaster county, Pennsylvania; approximately 1772. I have been unable to find any information about him before he emigrated, just that he was born in Ireland.
I believe his descendants were all born in the USA.

I acquired a copy of the tree from my sister. I think she picked it up at a Connor reunion a few years ago. I'm really not sure of who created the tree, I would have to search to find out who the person was. Perhaps it was the authors of a book "Connor/Conner cousins". Information on that book can be found here: http://www.getcited.org/pub/102906030

Paddy O'Toole
