CONSTANT Sam - 1922-2011 b.Symi Island, Dodecanese, Greece

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.
Sam Constant, a past president of the Parish Council of Saint Demetrios and a member of the Board of Directors of the St. Photios National Shrine, died at Halifax Hospital on Jan. 29,2011 at the age of 88.

He was born in Symi Island, Dodecanese, Greece on July 21, 1922. He remained proud of his heritage throughout his life.

At the age of 16, Constant went to Bengazi, North Africa to attend school and while he was there World War II started. He enlisted in the British Army and was sent to Alexandria, Egypt to attend Scotland Yard School. At the age of 18, he was given the option to join the Greek Navy attached to the British Navy. He graduated from the Naval Academy in Piraeus, served in the Royal Greek Navy with the Free Greeks in World War II and was presented with the Medal of Honor by King George of Greece.

He also served with the Australian Army and served Scotland Yard in Egypt as an interpreter. He spoke five languages. He served on the Greek destroyer “Kanaris” and received several decorations.

He received a medal for saving the lives of 36 American soldiers who were invading Sicily by being flown in on gliders. Unfortunately, some of the gliders fell into the sea and he and several members of his crew scurried about to save the men in the gliders. After the war, he applied for permanent resident status in the U.S. and as fate would have it, while he was at the immigration offices a young lawyer approached him, he was the commanding officer of these very same men that he had helped save three years before. Needless to say, through his efforts, Constant was able to get immediate “permanent resident” status. Constant and that young lawyer (Bob Weimer) remained friends all their lives.

Sam was elevated as Archon Orfanotrofos in 1998, by His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon at Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York. He was a founder of Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Campbell, Ohio (Mahoning County).
He dedicated 40 years of service to Saint Demetrios Church in Daytona Beach, Fla. as a council member and president and was bestowed the honor of President Emeritus.
He was a long time supporter of the Ladies Philoptochos Society.
He served on the Metropolis Board under Bishop John of Amorion, he Chaired the canister fund for the Orthodox Christian Mission Center, local LOGOS Chairman.

A member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, he was founder and served as its chapter president.

In addition, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Bahia Shrine, pillar of the United Way, donor to the Association of Retarded Citizens and provided scholarships to Bethune-Cookman University and Daytona State College.

Constantly guiding Mr. Sam was his unwavering faith, which was reflected in his gentle demeanor and the kindnesses he showed to people around him.

Constant was predeceased by his beloved wife, Angeline.

He is survived by his daughter, Renée Constant-Gahagan; his son, James Constant (Marina); and six grandchildren, Billy, Debbie, Sammy, Sotiri, Kosta and Martha.

– A visitation with a Trisagion service for Daytona Beach resident, Sam Constant, 88, will be held on Thursday Feb. 3, at 7 p.m., at the Lohman Funeral Home, Ormond Beach.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral service to be held on Friday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Daytona Beach with Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos officiating along with Fr. Joseph Samaan, Fr. George Papadeas, Fr. Michael Byars and Fr. Dean Photos (nephew of Constant).

Interment will immediately follow at Daytona Memorial Park with Military Honors.

Donations may be made in Constant’s memory to Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, 401 12th St., Campbell, OHIO 44405.

Hello all, only just found this thread.

Charles LeVerrier was my Great Grandfather.

Daughter Sylvia (Ellen Sylvia Honorine) married Charles Leopold McClintock Newberry (b. 1871 Christchurch, N.Z.) on 10 Aug 1909 in Aldergate, London.

Marie married Alfred Herbert Lyon in Torquay in 1906 and had two sons and a daughter. The sons are lost to me. I don’t know when or why the marriage ended but Marie remarried by 1921 to William (Bill) Burke. They had a son Rodney A Burke, b. 30 Nov 1921. Daughter Margaret V A Lyon (Valerie) from the first marriage chose to take her stepfather’s name of Burke, she later married and became Valerie Burges.

Bill Burke died 24 Oct 1961 in Milford, Surrey and Marie died in a Nursing home in that area in 1975/6.

Rodney married Helen M Hutchison and I believe there was a daughter. He died in 1995 near Dover.

Charles LeV was an avid traveller, mainly to Europe, so it would be unsurprising for some of his children to emigrate, Ernest’s family appear to have done that and perhaps Marie’s two sons. Edward remained, hence me!

The family had property in Hoo Meavy, Devon from 1808, Fancy Dale remaining until sold in 1991 after my Grandmother, Ida Beatrice (Beatty) and Aunt, Kathleen Margaret died in 1964 and 1990 respectively. These two had corresponded with Marie, Valerie and Rodney from time to time and had kept much of their correspondence.

I have many photographs of my grandfather Edward and family, but none of his siblings or parents.

Graham.
Re: Hilda Constant

I have recently started looking for information about the Constant family. Absolutely confused with the Hilda Constant information. My father is Frederick Charles Constant, born in Crayford, Kent 2/2/1922. He is however an only child, parents (and this is where it is confusing) James Nelson and Dora Madeleine (nee Smith) On a trip to the UK in July we went past his family home on Perrie St in Crayford - the original house is gone, but there is a house on the site.
He parachuted into Arnhem - but was in 156 Para - and knew of no other Constants in the Para regiments. He damaged his knee, and was a POW.
His father was killed in France in 1943(?)1944 - he was a Colonel in one of the Kent regiments. His father was one of 3 sons - originally from Cork Dad thinks, two were killed in WW1.
Can you throw any light on this. When I showed my father the post from Jean 12 Jan 01 he was mystified.

Hi, I think my friend is related to both Marie and Ernest Constant. Charles Jules le Verrier Constant married Winifred Hains, a vicar's daughter in Yorkshire in 1916. He served in the 2nd East Yorkshire regiment and moved to Sale in Cheshire after the war where his decendants still live. There are family memories of an Aunt Marie and an Aunt Sylvia??
Grandfather Constant, also Charles, was a language teacher and something of an intellectual.
We would love to be in touch with relatives as there is little known in the family of the Constants although we have traced them back to Charles senior's grandfather, an Edward Constant.
We have the wedding photo of Charles jnr but no photos of any other members of the Constant family.
Susan

We believe her father was David Constant but she was registered under her mother's maiden name, Lyon (mother was Mary). Eliza-Jane was first recorded in Scotland in 1850. If you have any further information on her or any connections we would be very grateful.

Hi,

Thanks for the message ! My family tree info on Alfred Herbert Lyon is set out below :-

Alfred Herbert Lyon
Schoolmaster
b. 1873 at Ilsington
m. 1906 at Newton Abbot, Marie Maud Valerie Constant
d. 1939 at Chichester

Herbert E H Lyon b. 1913 Lydford
Margaret Valerie Alethe Lyon b. 1915 Lydford
Basil Edwin Charles Lyon b. 1916 Lydford

Alfred H came from a wealthy branch of the Lyon family - his father Alfred owned much land in Devon, and his granfather William Walter likewise in Staffordshire. He volunteered for military service in South Africa, and then again in WW1 : I have his rare British South Africa Company Medal, but his later medals are missing. He seems to have fallen on hard times in later life, and was living with his nephew, the Rector of Wiston, when he died.

However, having found the records for the births of his three children, I can find nothing about them after that, nor anything about their mother, Marie M V Constant Lyon. Looks to me as if something went wrong with his marriage, either while he was away in WW1 or not long after he got back. I wonder if she took the children to Canada ... ?

Apart from solving that mystery, I am particularly looking for a photo of Alfred H himself.

Regards,

Dan Lyon
Hello - I don't think I saw your message about Charles Constant a couple years ago, so maybe you already have the info, but thought I should respond. Definitely sounds like you and my hubby are related. His grandfather was the son of Ernest Constant, your Marie's brother. I have some old pictures, too. Let me know more specifically what info you have, and what you need.

Hi Nadine, I appreciate your response to my posting. However,I have checked out that Isaac and Nancy before. My Nancy was born in Ohio in about 1814. Also, my Nancy had 3 children, all born in Ohio. I did some more research after receiving your reply and in the 1880 census I saw that Nancy's father was born in Pennsylvania, and her mother was born in Nova Scotia. Any suggestions on where else I can research? Thank you, Bill.

John Constant and Samuel Blackburn in KY

John Constant of Fleming Co. KY was my G-G-G-G-G-Grandfather through Jacob Constant. In the "Fleming Co., KY Abstracts of Pension Applications:
Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Indian Wars", by Jana Sloan Broglin, Samuel Blackburn of Mason County, KY, applied for his pension from the Revolutionary War. Toward the end of his deposition it states..."That he has no family except his wife who is about the age of himself and is very healthy. That they live entirely on the benevelonce [benevolence] and hospitality of JOHN CONSTANT who is the sone [son] of the wife of said Samuel Blackburn by a former husband." This was dated June 17, 1818 and declared Blackburn to be 63 years of age. Could this John Constant be the same one from VA and MD? Does anyone have any family history mentioning this?

If Mary was b. ca. 1860, then she was Henry Thomas CONSTANT's half sister....both the children of John CONSTANT. Mary's mother was Malissa J.
